Positive thoughts and prayers please for little Alfie
courtnek replied to ellieangel's topic in Everything about dogs
FRED!!! tell us about alfie!! and dont worry, we dont bite, much......    -
If the puppies are fine, let her decide...if she starts to ignore them, be concerned, but a few hours away are good for her sanity... Most (although not all) dog mom's will care for their young, as she seems to be doing....as long as they are healthy it's ok to give her some time off...

GO ALFIE!!! GO ALFIE!! YOU CAN DO IT!!! GO ALFIE!!! Little angel....  -
my reply was based on experience...my mom didnt want a dog, fought tooth and nail against it, we convinced our dad to get us one. Altho at first she didnt like him. he grew on her and she would never have done anything bad to him, even when he peed on her Christmas tree and soiled occasionally. It depends on the parent, I guess, but mine was hard core against having a dog...

ok cool... I was kinda concerned, because I cant see how antibiotics could treat an allergy. I'm glad she has antihistamines as well... hope she gets better soon... :D

Forgive the Golden - the well bred ones like everybody, and expect the same in return...they appear to be oblivious to personal space... mine always wanted to get in everyone's face and love them to death.....   I'm glad Cody has found a good class, but I too am curious to know about the eye check....is his vision normal or not?

I sent this to the Chicago Tribune... I am very irritated, with the media in general, about posting stories about "Pit Bull" attacks, when a lot of those dogs are NOT EVEN Pit Bulls...I am not saying that you are guilty of this, but I read so many stories, and see so many news events about it, that I would like to suggest this... Have your staff take the test at the following URL...can you pick out the pitbull? I want to stop the tirade against pitbulls in general, they are not bad dogs, they are usually not even Pit Bulls, and when they are, they are raised and handled incorrectly. I would greatly appreciate a response to this test. Please help us expunge the bad rap that the Pit Bulls have.... thank you... They all look so much alike, except for the rottie and the lab, but those are breeds I am familiar with.... I think Law enforcement need to take this test....sdo they can know a real Pit when they see one. I was able to pick it out, but only because of this forum...I can easily see how someone could consider some of the others as a Pit breed....

I'm a mom of a 16 year old boy - who is IRRESPONSIBLE to the max... He wanted to take a Beagle puppy and bring it home. I told him only if he would walk it, feed it, bathe it and take care of it, and his response was "cant YOU do that?" the answer to that question was a definitive NO!!!! so...find something your mom hates doing...and offer to do it for her in exchange for the dog...clean the bathroom, mow the lawn, dust, anything she really hates to do. On top of that, take VERY GOOD care of the dog..clean up after it, walk it, feed it, make it YOUR responsibility.. and DO IT> If you can prove to her that you will be a responsible owner (and suck up by doing things she doesnt want to do) she may give in. Make it a deal between you and her...

yea, me too... Most of the dogs I have demoted have been between 8 months to a year or so, never one that young.....since the other dog is so laid-back, they probably have no idea how to handle one who isnt.... I;m glad they're willing to consider professional training. Altho Lhaso's arent huge on the dog scale, any dog with an attitude like that one can be considered dangerous...and ALL dogs can bite, no matter how small. Just for some help, Holz, you know that NO dog should ever be allowed to growl, snap, lunge or in any way threaten an owner. THIS one needs big-time demotion, and your friend and mom have to get him in training asap...before someone gets bitten.... But have them see the vet first...I am just so surprised that a dog that young is acting this way, that I am concerend there may be a physical, medical reason for it's behaviour. I dont want to frighten them, but neurological disorder is a real possibility...especially since he's so young....I wouldnt tell them this...let the vet tell them if that's the case. He may just be very headstrong... Best of luck to them

antibiotics? She has an infection? I'm surprised....I would have thought antihistamines.... Does she seem to be getting better now?

Positive thoughts needed for cruelty case
courtnek replied to imported_Kat's topic in Everything about dogs
WOOOO HOOOOOOO!!!! Good for you and Cory!!! you did a wonderful thing and should be proud of yourself! Most people are afraid to argue with lawyers.... I hope his community service involves cleaning up after miscreant dog owners who dont bring their bags with them..... :evilbat: :evilbat: -
I used to swear that my Golden could tell time...... I was in school when I had him, and my mom told me that M-F, everyday at 2:30 he would leave wherever he was and go down to the foyer and lay down by the door....at 2:45 the bus would drop me off, and he would be waiting there for me to come in. I dont know if he could maybe hear the bus (they are noisy) or gauged time by the sunlight, but it was always at 2:30 that he would get up and come downstairs, and it didnt matter what time of year it was....and if I was late for any reason (and this always surprised me) he would start pacing at 2:45, and then whining.... kinda weird - they are amazing.... :)

My guess is that your friend and his mom are just doggie-pushovers. Perhaps the other dog has always just been kinda mellow and obedient, and they never got into a dominance tangle with him/her....obvious since it doesnt fight to take it's toys back. That's why I agree with the professional trainer. Friend and mom have to be trained on how to handle their dog. I have always believed that dog training classes are more for the owners benefit then the dog... I have demoted many dominant dogs in my day, for friends and family, but with a dominance situation this bad (and at three months this dog has taken over, that's bad news....) I will not even make a suggestion. They really need a professional on this one.... Give them my best regards, Holz, and wish them good luck for me. :)
* The breeder retains all stud and breeding rights. * Any progeny produced by the dog/bitch without the breeder's consent will automatically become the property of the breeder (xxxxx) to dispose of as she sees fit and the dog forfeited and returned to the breeder with no refund to the purchaser.
A contract like this IS enforcable, because it's been stated what will happen to both the dog AND the puppies if the owner does not comply. Of course, there are court costs, but here in the states if the owner loses, he pays them, not the breeder. Another thing to make it more enforcable is to have it sealed by a notary public, an outside "witness" that also has to sign the contract, so that if it becomes a legal case you have someone who witnessed the signatures who is not part of the breeders program or the owners interests.
I just want to add, just because a dog is frightened of a man, it does not mean the dog was abused by men. I find alot of dogs which spend their lives in kennels can have low self esteems and can be cowardly towards men due to them having a dominant stance about them...
I believe Cassie to be right on the mark. I have a female Foxhound, who also was raised in a kennel and used for hunting, and she is afraid of my son and all his male friends. I have had her over a month, and this is the first time she has agreed to stay downstairs (although in my room) when the boys are in the house. She still isnt completely comfortable with my son or his friends, although if I am in the room she will let him pet her (although not his friends). This is a long transference, however, you can make it go quicker by using all the excellent advice above. Good luck - be patient, it will happen... :D

Definintely seek professional help - starting with the vet! A dog that young who has become that dominant needs to be evaluated. Good luck
A growl doesn't always mean "protection". Fear can also trigger a growl
it's not a fear growl, I thought of that. It's a warning growl. like "dont bother mom".... And Gooey, you may have hit it...she only does it when I am there.. Freebee doesnt need to be there, she likes to hang out with the kids, so even if it's just me and Laurel, she will growl... I just dont understand the "bravery" when with me, and the "fear" when I'm not there.....unless she thinks I will protect her...maybe that's it... she's protecting her alpha, but only when the alpha is present... otherwise she just stays away? I;m SOOO confused..I have never seen this before...
-
In my 30 years of raising and training dogs, I have NEVER seen this... Laurel is timid, afraid of my son and his friends, avoids them whenever possible. At night, I let her and Freebee sit on my bed and watch TV with me. When and ONLY when, she is on my bed, if any of his friends come by (and they have to, to get to the bathroom) she GROWLS!!! no teeth, not nasty, just a low warning growl. I dont understand her. If she is upstairs and she has to go past them, to eat or go outside, she is scared ****less..but when sitting with me on my bed, she is suddenly protective??? Any ideas???

I have a friend who has a siberian husky who people always think is a wolf....with BLUE eyes???   No one around here has any clue what a Foxhound is either.... "Is that a spaniel?" "Is that a lab mix?" "he looks dangerous with those dark eyes..." (HE is a SHE and is timid....lol) but on the other hand, they see Freebee and say "OH LOOK!! IT's A LAB!!! go pet it!!: Laurel would back away and never hurt a flea, Freebee, the Lab, doesnt like strangers and doesnt like to be touched by them.... go figure :o

he should be ok with the tagament, like the vet said just watch him. it absorbs the stomach acid when people have heartburn, and coats the stomach. Do watch him though.... As far as the chewing and destructiveness, it may have been SA or it may just have been boredom, since he's used to having you around. It could also have been spite..."leave me here alone, will you?" In any case I would crate him if you're going to be gone for a long while...with toys and chewies...

What on earth am I going to do with her?!
courtnek replied to Crested's topic in Everything about dogs
I agree with Peng1zrule it looks like she is manipulating you, Crested. Laurel did it to me too.... sometimes you just have to put your foot down... :) -
hives possibly....she may have developed an allergy of some sort... are you feeding her anything different? or bathing her or wiping her with a towel? or a blanket? it's possible whatever the towel/blanket was washed in is causing an allergy or a rash..... there is stuff you can get at pet stores that will stop itching, but you shouldnt put it on the open ones... she needs to see a vet like you said.

Sharpei will they let you take her home? She'd be much happier, and more comfortable there, in her home with you.... I believe she will heal better at home with you....
