HELP (homes for endangered and lost pets) is a good site, and also hosts the Foxhound Rescue Society where I got Laurel/

HF this may be salvageable...Devin hates your sister, but in the hands of a knowing dog person he may be ok...dogs would rather be loved than anything else.... he just needs a home where someone is willing to work with him to get him over past issues...I have this issue with Laurel..it takes alot of time, but I have found it CAN be done, to MY SURPRISE!! Devin just needs a home with someone willing to work with him thru his issues... courtnek

Freebee thinks she is "top dog" over the other one. If they are outside and I call them, and Laurel doesnt come back immediately, she goes out, grabs her by the collar and basically drags her back...but SHE will come back when she damn well pleases!!! courtnek

Dangerous Dog Warning From Animal Control!!!
courtnek replied to Sharpeigirl's topic in Everything about dogs
feeling singled out is not unusalu in your situation...closed minds remain closed until something happens to make them open... Sassy is a comfort to you and Becky, and you love her, and that's ALL that matters. ALL dogs have issues....Freebee nipped one of my sons friends because he tried to take her food (a discarded pizza box that THEY left on the floor....)and he made a big deal out of it, even tho she didnt break skin....it was more of a warning nip than anything, but I dont tolerate my dogs laying teeth to flesh for ANY REASON....so she got put through the whole sit, stay, down, behave routine, until she "apologized" (by licking his hand that she nipped) for her behaviour. I feel this is safer, even though I told him "you dont take food away from a dog you dont know well...." so I guess he could call animal control and say I have a food aggressive dog, altho she's never done this before...I think all the noise, and loudness, just put her off... I also made them clean up all the food traces and take out the trash, so they were punished right along with her..no issues since then... :) -
Dangerous Dog Warning From Animal Control!!!
courtnek replied to Sharpeigirl's topic in Everything about dogs
that was me, courtnek.... Yea I know. It isnt easy, but you are who you are...they will have to learn to deal with it.... :D :D :D :D lotsa smiles from me and mine!! -
I want to thank everybody for all the nice things you've said, and all the encouragement about getting over this hurdle... I honestly didnt think she would ever be happy, and had consigned myself to believing she would avoid my son and his friends forever, but at least I knew she has a warm place to live and good food to eat, and that I love her and Freebee does too....seeing her change finally is making ME really happy. We;re not out of the woods yet, she still has issues with Kyle somettimes (he is SOOOO LOUD!!!) but day by day she gets a little more confidant, and I really like to see that... I was seriously beginning to doubt my ability to make her more comfortable here, and while I wouldnt give her up for anything, I often wondered if she would be happier somewhere else, with no teenagers to deal with. She seems to be taking it in stride (better than ME!! LOL) so I thank yu all for your continued support through all of this. Courtnek

Dangerous Dog Warning From Animal Control!!!

Do you have her papers? if so, you can prove she is not a pit mix...also the suggestion from the vet is good. He can tell them she's not a pit. Since she was in the house, and not wear she could attack the mailman, they have no case. The mailman may have lied and said she was outside. There is no law against a dog barking at someone at the door. I would definitely throw this back in their face with the proof that she is not a Pit mix. Also, she is under more stress since the accident, so take the vet report about that with you as well. -
update: When I'm at work she sleeps upstairs in her "special place" behind the dresser on the foam bed I made her. Today, she came downstairs and "associated" with my son and his friends, actually jumped up on the couch and made herself at home. Kyle made her get off, and she was ok with that too.... I'm so proud of her. She is finally settling in and becoming more comfortable, and she seems happy.... :D

Laurel let Kyle in my room..she bayed like usual, but he walked in confidenat and pretty much told her to shut up and she did, Then he petted her like it was nothing (he's VERY sure of himself) and walked out... This seems to work. She is afraid of people who are afraid of her... she's weird, I know... after that she went out and checked out the living room, where everybody was. Also, she HATES having her feet touched, but since it's been raining for three days straight I have to wipe them off when they come in. It's also a dominance assurance, when they let you touch their feet without bitching... she let me inspect her feet, and her ears, with no issues. She IS finally coming around, and I am SO PROUD OF HER!!

personally? I would like to have MORE than "a talk" with him.... I hate people like, this, and I believe the punishment should fit the crime..... Lock him in a small room with fighting dogs...the ones HE has abused, and let THEM decide his punishment. Maybe when they take his mangled body to the hospital HE WILL HAVE LEARNED SOMETHING.... :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: I know that will never happen...he still needs to be sitting in a jail cell somewhere pondering the existnece of life in general, for ALL living creatures!!!

Wolves have always been social canines, amongst themselves. They cannot feed, defend and raise their young alone, and they know it, so they formed family packs where there was one leader and everyone respected him. They are truly like families, looking after each other like family members would. The transition from wolves avoiding man to joining him was fairly easy to make. We lived in the same kind of tribes back then, and relied on each other for survival. Since those traits were the ones we deliberately bred for, that transition passed on to our dgs as well. And while things have changed alot in the centuries since the taming of the wolf, all of those old social family instincts still exist, in some form or another.
but, this was the case of a dog which was great until you did some thing it didn't want you to do...then watch out! this never made the news.
Sorry, Guest, I somehow missed that sentence....  this is courtnek, in case I dont show up as myself, which hasnt been happening lately.... I also cant say I agree that Rotties and Dobies are more likely to bite, and I will agree that dachsunds can sometimes be more dangerous...my ex's mom owned one and he was a powder keg....but again that's the whole misguided mind set that small dogs looking vicious is "cute"....

I believe that ANY dog can bite, as already stated. Pit's Rotties, Poodles, Golden's, a Golden here removed half of a childs face. It's not the breed, it's the dog, and the owners who DID NOT train the dogs....
We had one gentleman bring his Rottweiler in for vaccins, he knelt in front of the dog while the Vet gave the shot...the dog seemed calm enough...but, that little jab sent the dog into a frenzy and it bit its owners face off...the poor guy came running out of the appointment room holding his face together..
I ALWAYS hold Freebee when she gets her shots, and while she sometimes growl, she KNOWS BETTER to to bite me, for any reason... this man did not have the proper alpha control over his dog, who he WOULD NEVER HAVE BITTEN DESPITE THE PROVOCATION....A dog who has been badly injured, like hit by a car, could bite an alpha owner out of fear, but a shot??? it doesnt hurt NEARLY enough to cause a fear bite unless the dog is not properly controlled, and body language will tell you right off the bat how he will behave. Vets will give you a muzzle for the shots if you ask for one.

so did you have to use the cheese or not? I'm curious....

Agility finds another species...Agility fans LOOK HERE!
courtnek replied to sushiwelldone's topic in Agility
I'm NOT surprised at all! cats are by far, (and by nature) more agile than dogs. I love dogs to death, but in an agility contest, cats will take it. providing you can get them trained of course... but think about it. Cats are loners, they dont have a pack environment to rely on...it's them against the world...they have to be the best at what they do (like Mountain Lions, leaping down mountains and hills like a goat!!!) or they die....so if you can train them in agility, they will excel. It's in their genes... :D -
How about questions about the anesthesia: What type? how long with the dog be under anesthesia after the surgery? Will they bring her right out of the anesthesia after the surgery? How long will she be hospitalized (estimated time)? Can you come to feed her? Will she be on antibiotics? If so, what kind and how long? When will they try to get her up on her feet? Can you help in doing that? How long will she need to be "crated" or kept under "control" at home? How long do they estimate the surgery to be? What type of hip dyplasia surgery is it? Are they replacing the entire hip, or just shaving and reshaping the femur to go into the socket? Is there arthritis or calcification of the joint/socket?
Judy touched on some excellent points here. I am a firm believer in "home healing" - animals and people do much better at home when they are healing, in familiar surroundings and with people they love....
