courtnek replied to Aroura's topic in Everything about dogs
awwww.....snuggle him all you can!! I just cant see a papillion resembling a Chi....LOL - I think that's funny...    -
definitely a tissue warning....I'm in tears... why cant people understand that? Dogs have been classified as "man s best friend" forever.....HOW int he WORLD could anyone see fit to hurt them....when all they want is our love.... :(

Kat hit it straight on the head...this dog is guarding her "den" from you, which cannot be allowed. She doesnt do it to your husband because she considers him higher ranking than her, she considers you lower ranking and that CANNOT be allowed. Kat's suggestions were excellent. Under no circumstances are you to tolerate this behavior. Believe me, she wont let herself starve, when she gets hungry enough she'll come out willingly. And a little bit of dominance training on the leash is an excellent idea. Good luck!

Shopping spree! What more do I need to buy?
courtnek replied to imported_nea's topic in Everything about dogs
as far as bedding, I have two 2 1/2 inch thick foam pads (they are called mattress toppers) that I have wrapped a washable blanket around and then finished off with pillow cases covering them. They are all completey washable (except the foam) and easy to care for, and the dogs love them. -
Oh, and the most important part -- when you promise that you will take care of the dog you really do have to make good on that promise.
ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL!! I agreed to take on ALL care for the dog, and I did it faithfully. When I moved out, I took him with me....my dad had become so attached to him by then that he actually cried, and said if I ever didnt want him I could bring him back....my mom, on the other hand, had all the carpet replaced within two weeks of his being gone......

Thanks Rosebud - she is a sweety, and does love me (and Freebee) unconditionally. If she's outside and I come out she does this screaming run over to me, then bruises me with that whiplash tail of hers....lol I do want her to somehow get over being afraid of Kyle though. She is less afraid of him then she was, but she's still afraid...I really dont care if she doesnt like his friendsl I'm not fond of some of them...maybe that's projecting to her somehow.... but thanks. She is a sweetie.... :D

my Foxhound does it too...her wooo-wooo is rolled into a bay...two short barks and then wooo-wooo....while she bays away.... I had a malamute that used to howl, but this one is just goofy.. it's so funny-sounding...

Help! Lost Dog in Virginia!!!About 45 minutes from Richmond!
courtnek replied to Queen Bitch's topic in Everything about dogs
WOO HOO!!! YES! YES! YES!!! is she ok? -
My silly Foxhound has a BIG lump in her tail, but I know what caused that. Silly dog wags her tail into doors, walls and the desk. And me. I have bruises to prove it. That tail should be considered a weapon...  Her's is caused by a broken blood vessel in the tail, swelling up, and I have an appointment to take her in and have it slashed and drained... My Golden used to shake his ears so hard that would happen as well. even though he had no ear mites or infections, he just shook his head all the time. The Foxhound does too.... Good luck to your pup!! Hopefully everything will be fine!!

     Is he well enought to go home? He would probably get better even quicker if he was home.... Glad to hear he's doing well... :D
It sounds top me like Dixie is already submissive, so there really is no need to Harley to try to make her submit.
true to an extent, however, Harley is younger, and was brought in after Dixie. Dixie reigned supreme, until now....I believe that Harley wants to be top dog, but stealing that position from another dog already in that role causes stress on both dogs. Dixie may be willing to give it up fine, but then again, maybe not. Harley is pushing her weight around....that's why I suggested a trainer, and possibly demotion techniques for one of them... All in all, you as alpha have to run the household. I would not suggest pulling them apart physically, unless you are willing to keep a short lead on Harley, so you dont have to have your hand near her face. You definitely need a trainer invloved here. because Harley will only get more dominant as she gets older. Get her signed up asap.

It could still be ok....My ex used to get tumors like that on his back...so did his dad. They were hard and attached and couldnt be moved, but they were completely benign. The vet will do a biopsy on them and remove them. It could be nothing..... paws and fingers crossed that all is well....

all paws and fingers crossed.... I will hope that the growths, whater they are, are completely benign and Shadoww has no issues.

I wish Phoenix a safe return to you and your family. Hope she comes back real soon.... there is a web page where you can post lost and found dogs. Maybe check that out? this site covers the whole united states http://www.lostdog.com/ best of luck to you. -
My bad....sorry...  :)

I too usually let them work it out themselves, however, if it looks like Harley could seriously hurt the other dog, demotion is sometimes necessary. That's why I suggested the trainer. Ordinarily it works itself out, and the display is horrendous and looks terrible, but they dont normally hurt each other....As far as waking up protective, that does require a professional. Your dogs should let you enter their space and do anything you want there, at any time, whether sleeping or not. Only the alpha is allowed to protect his personal space....and that should be you. Good luck with them.

"bitch wars" came to my mind also... females living together often snap at each other...if's a dog-eat-dog world for them... I can make one suggestion, but it's hard to carry out and you should really see a professional trainer about it. ONE of them needs to be demoted, so the other can rule. Whichever one is "top dog" right now needs to be given that status permanently. Fed first, paid attention to first, etc..but see a professional trainer before you decide. I have two females co-existing very comfortably, but one is very dominant over the other, and the other accepts it unconditionally. This is hard for people to understand, why cant they be equal? In some situations they can. but not in this one. It's not normal in a pack society. There are leaders, and followers....see a professional. You need to decide a leader.

I am going to answer using 38 years as a diabetic... puppies (and children) burn food more quickly than adults. By feeding them 4 times a day, you equalize the blood sugar levels and keep them at a constant "rate" all day. This is better for their health and metabolism. It allows a constant level of energy, and bone and tissue growth. Very important for the little ones. If you feed them once, they will have a high blood sugar level for a short time, and then will fall through the floor and suffer low blood sugar until the next feeding. This is uncomfortable for them, and will make them irritable during the low blood sugar phase. In the wild, although wolves often only eat once a day, they do frequent feedings of the young. They have an instinctive understanding of what puppies need to survive. Just like children need frequent feedings to grow up correctly, so do puppies... and just FYI - I feed my two adult dogs twice a day. Breakfast, and dinner...not only does it have a better affect on blood sugar and metabolism. it also gives them something to look forward to.
No, but they are typically HUGE on the attitude scale
kinda like Chihauhau's eh?   the two next door are HUGE on the attitude scale as well... thanks HF - I didnt know that about the Lhaso's, and now I feel better. Attitude can be handled, witht he proper trainer. I was really afraid of disease, which could mean losing the dog.... :D
