1. Kat, really? Forgive my obvious ignorance, but I really didnt know there was anywhere in the world where a rabies vaccination was not required.... that seems so strange to me!! Here, if you dont get them done every year (unless you get the two year shots) the county animal control people start sending you threatening notices, and they can take your pets away if you dont get them done. K - I think Maura (the foster mom) gave her an earful...She called me today and said 'everything was all straightened out and she would be mailing my certificates today". About that same time I got an email from Maura saying "Did she get this straightened out yet? we had some "words"...."apparently they send copies of the adoption papers to vet, so that they have records of the new owners....which makes sense since they're running a rescue society... My concern is that here in this city, the police have told me that if a dog escapes and is NOT wearing a rabies tag, they will not go out of their way to rescue it. They will not endanger their people trying to chase down a potentially rabid dog. So I want her tagged, just in case.
2. They started out ok - the originally wanted to prevent cruelty to animals, espcially livestock and food animals, like cows and chickens, etc.... somewhere along the line they became convinced that all pets are bad, all meat is bad, all pet owners are slavedrivers, the world should live on tofu....they are now completely off track of what they started out to be. What I like to tell them is that the wolf, the ancestor of all dogs, chose to partner with man. We could not have forced him to, they travel in packs... and could easily have defended/escaped. They were drawn to our fires, to the smell of food, to the potential for warmth, and probably, out of curiosity. We in turn learned that while they were there, they offered a form of protection from other wild animals, from other tribes. We fed them and let them sleep by our fires, they protected us and followed us from hunting ground to hunting ground....All the evidence points to it was voluntary on their part.....a bond of friendship formed, and has remained that way til this day. They get SOOO upset. You gotta do this with complete sincerity and a straight face....They get so flustered...it's hilarious
3.
let me be legal council for the zoo, i would have so much fun on that one
you and me BOTH Rott. As for sighs, there are signs on the cement "surrounding" walls that say "do not feed...." "do not lean over..." "do not attempt to approach the animals..." they're everywhere!!! They originally enclosed the wolf compund with chain link (the compound itself is about 4 acres large, and has caves and natural dens throughout it, as well as rises and forestland) because people kept trying to get into it to "commune" with the wolves.....They are accustomed to having people watch them, but like any wild animal, they only responded positively to the people that fed them, that they had learned to trust. and on the chain link there are signs in huge red and black letters about DO NOT APPROACH THE COMPOUND. DO NOT TOUCH THE FENCE..... It just aggravates me so much. Stupid cow ignored all the signs, and caused this animal's death....
4.
She had a full vet work up when she was hit by the car. I'm seriously wondering if she took a blow to the head, and somthing isn't going on there
Oh Shar I'm SOOOO sorry, but that's exactly what I was thinking. She may have rolled after getting hit and slammed her head..... she needs a neurological workup, check for brain swelling, that sort of thing. I am soo sorry.... Keep us up to date ok?
5. you wouldnt think I'd have to move the WHOLE WORLD just to get a rabies tag!!! I sent the rabies certificate to Kane County, with a check, for a rabies tag for Laurel. They dont give out tags when they vaccinate en masse in the kennels, just certificates.. so I sent the certificate, and a check..they LOST it..so now I have been calling the vet and saying "HELLO!! I need a new certificate to get a tag..." "well, we have to look into her vaccination records, make sure she was done properly..." HELLO!! if she wasnt done properly there would have been NO certificate in the first place..." "well, we still have to investigate...." "ok, we have records of her shots, but we cant send you a certificate without proof you adopted the dog.." IF I HADNT ADOPTED THE DOG WHY WOULD I CARE??????? "some people claim theY have adopted dogs that they havent adopted..." WHAT??????? so I fax the adoption papers.... "we cant read them they;re too light" so I give them the number of the lady I adopted her from... she calls me back and says..."oh well, I have to go home now. I'll look into it tomorrow..." !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO WONDER PEOPLE DONT ADOPY DOGS MORE READILY!!!!!
6. I agree with all of the above. If you absolutely CANNOT be there (and, personally, I would use ANY excuse to blow off a wedding) then you need to board her at a vet kennel, where there are doctors on hand who know what they're doing to see to her pregnancy. She needs you more than your uncle does, despite what the family might say...
7. I personally wouldnt dock a tail, but if it's done professionally it's usually fine and there are no issues. RUBBER BAND DOCKING is just sick...the dog is in so much pain, waiting for the blood-starved tail to fall off.... I really really really want to see animal cruelty raised above a misdemeanor, and made a felony. Put their sorry asses in jail.... better yet - lock them in a room with the dogs they have injured, beaten, starved and abused, and let THEM decide.... :evilbat: :evilbat:
8. Very sad.....maybe I shouldnt say this, but PETA has been advocating for years that dogs should not be kept as companion animals...all animals should be "free" (so all the housedogs in the world get set loose to raid garbage all over the planet? these people are idiots...) and I wonder how much of the BSL law is influenced by them....they have a huge lobbying organization that storms Washington, DC all the time.....
9. I forgot to add that part - I was just so amazed... The dad said they do not need to hunt to live, although they eat the elk, he isnt going to hunt them anymore. He feels he "owes them"... I dont have anything against hunting, providing you arent just doing it for sport. If you are eating the animal, then so be it. Sport hunting and trophy hunting pisses me off, but if you intend to eat the animal, and use the hide for something I'm ok with it. But in that situation, I dont think I could ever shoot an elk again either...even for food.....
10. a young child got seperated from his dad while hunting..no one could find him...he was stuck on the mountainside all night... he was found the next day..2 elk had bedded down beside him, next to him, and kept him warm all night. They were huntng elk... yet the elk had decided to save this child.... they slept next to him all night, kept him warm, and protected him.. he was rescued the next day... It;s a miracle,,,we need to be sure we appreciate all the animals in our lives.....
11. that's why I adopted Laurel, with her sad eyes, and her timidness, no one else would take her...they had been trying to adopt her out for a long time...she's not extra pretty, or perfect...but I love her. :)
12. so can Blastomycosis, if you live in an area where there are lots of rivers, ponds and lakes. It killed Alex.... PLEASE take your pup to the vet..... and let us know what happens.
13. me three..... My ex found a kitten frozen to the underside of a garbage dumpster quite a few years back....she had had a home at one time, because there were collar scuffs around her neck, but now she was thinm starving and frozen to the ground. The melted the ice she was stuck to and took her inside the school (he worked at a college doing heating and AC repair) and they discovered that she had no use of one of her back legs....it had gangrene. They have no idea if she was a runaway, or a dump, but he got all of his co-workers together to raise money for the vet, and get the leg amputated. Then they kept her in the boiler room in the college (nice and warm in there) and they fed her and changed her box, etc. until I could get her adopted out. I laughed at him about that all the time, him and all his "macho, hard-assed, tough-guy" friends, (these were big, burly, tough guys on the surface) fawning over a kitten.....all softies at heart, every one of them!!   the moral of this story is that there really ARE decent people in the world, under all guises....unfortunately, the media always chooses to portray everyone's evil side....you dont often hear about the good stuff. I think there should be a place in all newspapers for the "good deed of the day", where all the good stuff gets written up.... 8)
14. except for the beagle across the street (who's bay is quite different than Laurel's) I think I own the only hound in the immediate area....and the place where I got her (and where the foxhound rescue is) is 40 or so miles from here, so maybe the local animal control has never heard a dog bay like this? I'm not surprised the neighbor didnt know, but it does seem strange that AC wouldnt....
15. good strategy - let Jared help you train him. He obviously responds to being punished better this way...he's just spoiled Shara. He will have to learn that lay down means just that....he's still learning, just try to reinforce that. :)
16. LAWYERS are what's wrong with the world....they couldnt shoot her, the zoo would be sued from here to next millenia.... The person who shot her was a cop. The zoo is patrolled by police day n and day out, and at night as well....to try to avoid these things, mostly. It doesnt specify what he tried to do to get the wolf to let go, just that he determined it would not so he shot it. this is the letter I sent to the Tribune. You have to be kinda toned-down with them, or they wont rpint what you write.... Dear people, I am exceptionally APPALLED at what that stupid woman did at Brookfield Zoo. What was she thinking? Did it not occur to her that the cement wall and the chain link enclosure was there for a reason? Did the term "wild animals, do not enter" simply not register? I am extremely saddened that the grey wolf had to be shot. I understand why they did it, but in all honesty, had it been me I might have shot HER instead. The poor animal had to be sacrificed because of this person's stupidity..... And he was the last, of all the wolves born in captivity at that zoo..... I have gone to the NBC5 website, and voted for her to be criminally charged for the destruction of this wolf. So far the votes TO charge her are up to 96%..... Excuse my language, but I really hope to see her sorry ass IN JAIL for this.... I have been to Brookfield Zoo many times, I have taken my son, neices and nephews there. We always go to see the wolf enclosure, and watch the wolves... I remember Cinnamon Bear very well....I am very sorry he is now gone.... Katy Courtney Elgin, IL.
17. Also, here's the link for the most widely read newspaper in the state. You can write letters to the editor about the incident. You have to register first, but it's free....I'm composing one now. and I also voted. stupid cow...what the hell did she think all the precautions were for in the first place????
18. Some lady here in Illinois went to Brookfield Zoo, crawled over the cement wall and made it up to the Wolf enclosure, which is surrounded by a chain link fence... She stuck her arm into the fence to pet the wolves, and the Alpha grabbed her arm and wouldnt let go. They SHOT the wolf, because he wouldnt let go..he was only being a wolf....but he died because of it. The last grey wolf in this zoo, born in captivity...personally, I think they should have shot the woman....what the hell did she think the cement wall and chain link enclosure was for????? NOW her famly wants to sue the zoo....I would LOVE to be that judge right now....I would make HER pay all the court costs, and spend time in jail for causing the zoo to shoot the wolf to protect her...when SHE SHOULDNT HAVE BEEN THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!
19. Animal Control was just here...one of the neighbors complained that one of my dogs was "in pain, and howling..." it was Laurel, baying... The cop met Laurel, said she was fine, but asked "why does she make that "hurtful, 'keening' sound?" Because shes a hound, they dont bark like other dogs, they bay.... He brought the neighbor over (from a block away) and had her meet Laurel and listen to me explain how her bark was differnt from other dogs....she said she was sorry, she was just worried about the dog (and I thanked her for that!!) What fun!! Hound ownership is interesting, to say the least....
20.      I AM SOOOOO HAPPY FOR YOU AND SASSY!!!! How is her leg doing? Is she getting accustomed to the three-legged life? I KNEW you could do it!!! WOO HOO!!!! 8) 8) 8) 8)
21. really cool....
22.   He'll be fine. As long as he stays by your side, in the correct heel position, let him bounce. Puppies have lots of energy to expend. As he gets older, the bouncing will probably stop on it's own. and laughing is only bad if he's done something bad, even if it's funny... I had to stop myself from splitting my sides when my son was a baby, picked up a spoonful of mashed potato's, and flung them at his dad.... we both had to leave the room before we cracked up, cuz we did not want to encourage that behavior....but I think your pups bouncing will stop as he gets a little older and has expended some of that endless puppy energy they have. He's probably just happy to be out with you, and is showing it by wriggling and bouncing.
23. Shara, silly girl... You're SPOILING him rotten!!!    he doesnt need to be entertained every minute of every day, in fact he needs to learn that sometimes there is nothing to do, and to just lie down and relax. In the wild, most animals, if they arent hunting, spend the rest of the time sleeping. You spend a lot of time with him already, good, positive time...it wont hurt him to just lie down now and then and be bored... :D

True story

That is scary....I stay away from net chatrooms, unless I feel comfortable, like in here.... The sad part is, it's gotten so bad there are actually police officers who cruise chat rooms and websites, looking for pedophiles and perverts.... and set up dates with them, and then arrest them once they meet. young people need to be very careful who they make dates with online... I woulodnt advocate it at all.... :o :o
25. absolutely correct. They seem to know, when people are meaning harm and when they're not....And yea, you're right. I saw a show with a police chief who said that the best protection you can have is a dog. Doesnt matter the size, weight, or ferocity. The average burglar doesnt want to deal with the NOISE that dogs make - it's too dangerous. One of the neighbors might hear it and call the cops....he said that there is no electronic security device better than a dog...unless you are storin Rembrandts or Picasso's at your house, most burglars will avoid you. For personal safety, I saw a show on Animal Planet where the dog in question was a little guy, a cocker or something about that size.. someone broke in her house and the lady was all alone, older and afraid. This little dog LATCHED onto his ankle and WOULDNT LET GO...no matter what he did. She was able to call the police while the dog distracted the intruder, he finally gave up and took off. He couldnt get past the little guy, to get anywhere near her.... :D
