I always turn the sound up on the tv or stereo to shut out the loud noises, my Westie mix used to be really terrified of them but he seems to have calmed down a little now as he is slightly deaf...but occasionally when he hears a loud bang he starts getting restless but i don't respond to his actions by cuddling or talking to him as this encourages fear, i just leave him to settle. My other 2 dogs a Bullmastiff and Border Collie mix are'nt too bothered...neither are our cats. I see that if you dont give your pets too much attention, they dont take any notice of the fireworks. They seem to be tough the cats when they are out roaming!
We just moved about a 100yds to our other pasture, and Winnie is sort-of confused. We go to the old house to get stuff and then we come back and I was wondering if there was something we could do to get her to understand we live here now. We brought all her stuff here and everything, any ideas? I know this is DOGOmania, but anyone know about the same question applying to cats? Thanks!
I kept my cats in for eight weeks so that they could get used to the smells and noise around the home and look outside into the garden everyday, letting them out earlier than this is likely to see your cats return to your old home.

This message is for the post (BOERBOEL) I hope those will see that both breeds should not be judged, they are totally different in CHARACTER. BULLMASTIFF! The temperament of the Bullmastiff is perhaps the most appealing part of the total picture he presents. He is a steady, stable animal, completely lacking in excitability. His intelligence, his readiness to use it, is certainly ''selling'' him as the ideal pet. He adores children and will tolerate an incredible amount of abuse from them. He is completely dependable, but the fortunate midnight prowler has much to worry about. A Bullmastiff will seldom bark, and never will he do so without reason. Here is the link for the Boerboel http://www.boerboels.co.za/Boerboels/b_index.htm I would also like to point out that one of the pups was mated with his mother, too closely bred i think.

What Would You Do If Your Pet Was Missing?
Shannon_C replied to Carolk9s's topic in Everything about dogs
The only problem with having the word IDENTICHIP on tags is letting those who find the dog know that he/she as one which i find could be too risky.....there are lots of sick people out there that would do anything to take a Pedigree especially if they see one roaming round the streets and of cause they will try and remove the chip themselves, seriously injurying the dog in the process, it as been known to happen. Tattooing is also making the dog an easy target, these can easily be removed or covered with dye! Thats my opinion! -
Do not judge a Bullmastiff against a Boerboele. Both breeds are totally different. If you want to know more about the Bullmastiff just ask! or i will put it in a new post!

Thankyou Majik. I literally had to lie down on the floor to take that one.....his eyes glancing across the room, is telling me (Oh no not again) lol Thanks Nancy. something i forgot to mention..the sit and stay! Majik when you get her to sit, hold a treat in your hand holding it out towards her nose...let her sniff but dont let her have it, then move your hand upwards and over her head....she will follow the treat with her eyes as she is doing this, (at the same time say SIT) her bottom will lower to the floor..when she does this let her have the treat then praise her well. Do the same to get her to lie down.....same again with the treat...but this time lower your hand down to the floor, she should follow it......as she does you will notice her elbows touching the floor to lie down, when this happens...again give her the treat and praise her well. With the stay command....hold out your hand straight out, palm facing towards her and say STAY, when she stays for a few minutes.....walk over to her keep using the phrase STAY.....stand in front of her then let her have the treat given with plenty of praise.

I should hope not :o Yes make me your council member....i might drop in some np's :)

Yes, kids do stupid things usually to show off in front of there friends. Do you know any other parks locally ?
-
I am sorry to hear that. You could give her one or two Kongs filled with her favorite tasty treats....this will keep her occupied for a few hours or more, you can also take her for a long walk twice a day morning and night to tire her out so that when she comes back she will want to do nothing else but sleep :) when she is awake try to distract her with things as much as you can, this will help her confidence also giving her plenty of love, play a game of hide and seek or hide her toys to find....but dont let her get bored. When you want to pick the cat or pup up, try and do it without her noticing like when she is asleep. GOOD LUCK!

I agree with you that all dogs should be kept on leads especially where people are concerned, they will chase anything that moves which can be serious if an adult or child were to get bitten....but some fools dont realise or couldn't careless....its something you have to try and avoid.....go to another park that allows dogs, you might find one with more mature adults who keep there dogs on leads. When i take my dogs to the park i keep the Bullmastiff on a lead because when he sees anyone in sight, (be it a dog or person)...he is off like a rocket, he only wants some fuss or to play but the size of him frightens people unless they know the breed (especially when he charges towards them), once he gets closer he will suddenly stop (but it is scary having a 9 stone Bullmastiff come running at full speed towards you  he as calmed down a lot now)....but when i think its clear in the distance i let him off and he goes bounding round the field. The other two dogs of mine a Westie mix and Border Collie mix don't bother anyone...they keep to themselves.
-
My dogs are good with the cats when they are just walking around the house but if i pick one up.....you can see the look on there faces, especially the Bullmastiff which he sometimes comes over to have a look and sniff....then he usually goes and lies down.....but this is only because he knows who his master is. If i allowed him to do as he pleased like chasing the cats etc, it would become a big problem and could get out of hand. So it is up to you the OWNER to show your dog who is TOPDOG in the house and that is not her. She will learn in time but you have to be firm and have lots of patience for this to work.....shouting or screaming wont help the dog it will probably cause fear or aggression, so a calm voice is needed but at the same time being firm if she disabeys you. GOOD LUCK!

What Would You Do If Your Pet Was Missing?
Shannon_C replied to Carolk9s's topic in Everything about dogs
Unfortunately i have been through this with my Westie mix when he went missing for 2 days (he was wearing a collar and tag) (upsetting as it was) i phoned our local rescues as well as putting up posters, and i am pleased to say that he was at the RSPCA.....a gentlemen had taken him in with no collar on. This man didnt live local and by looking at my dogs paws it seems he had traveled a long distance...probably seeking out a female, it was a long time ago when he went missing as i lived with my mother back then. I would have done more at that time as now....but my mother was in charge  but luckily our dog was found. I have one dog that is chipped as well as tagged, thats the Bullmastiff who is more at risk of going missing than the other two who just have collars and tags. Well i would phone and go round all the shops, rescues, vets giving out posters to the staff and visiters, as well as my neighbourhood. I would also put up photos and descriptions over the net and on the news. There would be a nice warm comfy bed on the step, with water and a shelter just incase it rained .....i would say food but it would be eaten by other animals. I WOULD DO AS MUCH AS I COULD TO GET MY DOGS BACK. -
Your dog is jumping up because she is jealous of you giving the cat and pup attention and not her.....to stop this you must play the role leader showing her that your the boss and that she must wait her turn for fuss. What i suggest everytime she does this is to say (NO) firmly to her and move away, you might have to work on this as she wont respond straight away and will just think its a game....you can also try distracting her with a favourite toy. But what i don't recommend is using the phrase (CATS) this is encouraging her to chase and attack them which is and can be dangerous if ever she were to catch one, not only the cats would get bitten but also could die of shock being chased....they are sensitive animals! Your dog should be allowing the cats to pick on her not the other way round :D

Yes thats your answer ''BREEDING'', most people steal Pedigree dogs to make money instead of going out looking for work and buying a dog, so there way out of it is going round stealing someones loved pet which is wicked. They seem to think that nothing else matters than to claim money for drugs etc.....(which is mainly the reason for many) from those willing to buy a pup who duly have no idea that the mother or farther as been stolen....its theft and a disgrace to the world we live in....but it happens and thats why tattooing and identichips are on the market for those who love and care for there pet and are willing to get them protected from thieves. They are called backyard breeders and they try to make as much money for there pups, because they know people will pay the price which is a lot for a Pedigree as you know, especially the larger breeds.

Advice on new household addition please!
Shannon_C replied to bk_blue's topic in Everything about dogs
K absolutely beautiful, who gets to have the bone first (in the background) ? :D bk as you know leaving both dogs in the same room together would simply be looking for trouble, they need time to get to know each other while your at home with them....the bond won't happen in a day. As i mentioned both dogs having there own rooms at night and when no-one is home is the best option as you never know what could happen when two dogs meet for the first time. Maybe putting Roxy's crate in a room that you use most would be benificial as both dogs would be able to see and sniff each other without any harm done...she shouldn't be left in there all the time, this is simply a way of making it easy for you instead of struggling with both dogs on leashes which as Anne said is not reccommended as it causes aggression. You could try muzzling them both to see how they react towards each other (i know it might sound cruel) but it will prevent any biting and saving your hands if there was a fight. MUZZLES do have to be used properly though and not left on too long. I dont have to tell you about giving your first dog more attention, you already know  If there are any problems between them say (NO) in a firm voice. Does your other dog have the run of the house ? What i do at all feeding times is give each there meal and call the eldest first, then the second and so on, they know they have to sit and wait before i tell them to eat which as worked wonders....i never allow them to just dive in and gobble the lot. Apart from the muzzling, (as they have all been bought up from pups) mine have been bought up this way! :D -
Who else out there is a Bulldog (english) owner?
Shannon_C replied to lordgoliath's topic in Group 2
Actually when we began our search for a Bulldog, we decided that a Bullmastiff would be the second choice, but since I had wanted a Bulldog since I was small child of 8, I was willing to spend time looking. We are considering a second dog, and a Bullmastiff is likely what we will get. James
Hmm well as im partial to the Bullmastiff, i must say yeah get one  they are the next best Bull breed you could ever own, apart from being stubborn which is probably the Bulldog trait or maybe the Mastiff :D they are a layed back breed, also very loyal and very very nosy.....you cannot have anything in the house or garden with out them noticing  I would definately say the playing part and a lot of napping in the Bullmastiff comes from the Bulldog though...Oh and the SnOrinG :o -
I do have a Guild but im having problems getting to change things.....i need to have a look at the security settings. here is a photo that you could use...it should be the right size, if not i will alter it. The name of your Guild is fine, im sure everyone else here will agree. Make it public so people can become a member though. My User name is bullmastiff3

Advice on new household addition please!
Shannon_C replied to bk_blue's topic in Everything about dogs
As much has i hate saying this but why do people have dogs if there just going to give them up because they are having a baby, they should think about that before making that decision of having a dog in there life that will live upto 10 to 12 years old or longer (Its a big commitement) but anyway im glad that Roxy as found a permanent home where she can live out her days being happy with you, it will feel strange to her at first being in a different house and so therefore she will probably need time to settle in, keeping both dogs in a seperate room is ideal....they will need time to get to know each other but i also think it would be wise to get a crate for her to get used too, (something she can call her own with some toys when your not there) obviously moving from one house to another she will be needing your company to make her feel more comfortable in her new surroundings as it can be quite stressful for some dogs but saying that Roxy might be different :) hope so! I hope you understand what i am saying, trying to make it as easy has possible for both of you. GOOD LUCK! I have ummed and aard about having another dog, a Bullmastiff but i have to wait as i already have three dogs and my hubby wouldnt like it if i had half a dozen Bullies running round the house lol. Well when that time comes i am going to have a rescued one, possibly a female and maybe get a male Bullmastiff puppy later from a breeder......whatever happens i want to make it has easy has possible when introducing both of them so i might get the pup first, but who knows. That won't be for a while yet, we need a bigger house :( -
