1. these used to be a favorite in our house too until our trip to the doggie dentist! gaia used to chew the heck out of hers and her daddy would call her a "man-hater!" apparently they are designed using some of galileo's drawings and ideas. the insert in more detailed but i found this quote online . . . "The bone shape was developed using the principles and examples of Galileo Galilei Linceo, one of the world’s greatest mathematicians and physicists. Based upon his principles in the science called “Strength of Materials”, the Nylabone Company designed the world’s strongest dog chew."
2. ahem! where are some more pics of carson anyway?
3. it's hard but you have to keep them separate in your mind. carson will never replace mocha so you can't compare. there will never be another mocha but on the same page -- there will never be another carson. so you don't want to waste what time you have with carson thinking how they were so different. maybe you could find some similarities? or list all the good things you like about both. yes carson has some issues right now but we're gonna get to those quick fast and in a hurry!
4. i most certainly see alot of gsd in him! he is very cute!
5. my first inclination was cotton but then you said you wanted them to go together. haha JM my mom had peanut, butter, and jelly (3 chis) when she was a child! ever heard of a fluffer nutter (pb and marshmallow creme sandwich)? you could call her marshmallow or fluffy
6. why can't we send morons like this to another planet? come on technology! i am sorry you had to go thru this -- i would say you have more self control than i. i wish i had a good suggestion for ya but unfortunately one harsh word against a dog can do more harm than a million accolades can recover!
7. i have an irish wolfhound in my basic class this session. whoa! now that's alotta dog!
8. you mean it is not normal to have a buddy when you go potty? :o i guess mine forgot to read that page of the handbook! the r2 swear they are helping by sitting with me and of course they are so i don't mind :D
9. i somehow overlooked the 12 tooth extraction bit! :o yikes! they do have puppy kongs that are supposedly softer but i would only try that after his mouth has healed. ok so did you get doggie toothpaste and a finger brush? sounds like he has some dental problems so need to brush those teefers!
10. is he potty or puppy pad trained? if not don't forget the nature's miracle and some paper towels!! does small toys include a kong? kongs are great! do you have toe clips that will work on his tiny paws?
11. very sorry to hear chico is not himself. good luck at the vet and get well wishes!
12. they look like they all had tons of fun! zoey looks like Christmas with her green collar and red leash :)
13. normally i try not to read the posts like this because it really burns me up that some people are such an utter waste of genetic material. i don't understand how any person can mistreat an animal. it totally bogles my mind and makes me want to hurt them  i say do unto them what they have done unto the animal! tie them to a tree, barely feed them, no human contact, no baths/grooming. i have very wicked views of how these people who abuse animals should be handled. thank goodness these 2 were saved!
14. outstanding news HF! she is very lucky to have you and i am sure that will go the other way too! she is quite a stunning girl! congratulations again!
15. are these relaxed enuff for ya?
16. our deepest sympathies HF!
17. yes the latest in my stupid people series (only this time it might even apply to me  ). once again we are at the vet after getting aspen his acupuncture. so the office is in a cluster of glass front buildings which include a post office and a restaurant of some type. as my fiance is paying, aspen is at the window sitting quietly looking out. this man walks by, stops, comes back and admires aspen. finally he comes inside. in his hand (at doggie nose level) are a kit kat bar and a doggie bag container from the restaurant. as he proceeds to wave this take out container in aspen's face he says 'oh he probably smells my meat, can he have meat?' to which i reply 'well what kind of meat?' he says it is beef and for some reason that registers in my brain as probably a burger. so i say to the dude 'he can have a small piece and he has to do a trick for it!' before i even get those words out the guy has unwrapped and fed aspen a 6oz piece of filet mignon :o ! wait! i didn't see a trick! the only trick aspen did was the snatch and swallow and he was able to do that because this guy unwrapped the steak right in his face! ackkk! chalk one for aspen! i realize now i should have just suggested the guy give aspen one of our treats -- altho aspen was all too happy! not every joe schmoe would give up his filet for a cute pup. i couldn't tear aspen away from the window after that -- he was trying to lure them in with cuteness!
18. awww! can't wait for pics! how old did you say he is? pm'ed you with some info!

21. doc: good to know that they are at least putting up some kind of warning during the show :D i totally agree that a tired dog is a more manageable dog! glad to hear that dex and kira have done well with their on-leash aggression issues. i hope they will continue to benefit. i still do struggle with whether this is must see tv tho .
22. i agree that not all dogs respond to +R in the same way-- this is what i meant by some dogs need a different approach. i am considering any dog with MAJOR behavioral hang ups -- not just breed specific. you mentioned that he works with pits, rotts, gsd as if they are the trouble makers -- or maybe you are saying they are of robust enough build so as to handle his rougher methods? personally the rotten two respond quite well to positive training methods and i wouldn't resort to use of physical force with either (but of course this is just me). again i am not attacking you for training with this guy and i think it is great that you found solutions that worked for your crew. :D you are correct when you say joe schmoe dog parent should not try this at home. that is the scary part -- this show is marketed toward the average pet person who likely doesn't have the knowledge or experience to implement this type of training. i wonder if they will put up the warning box that says "DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME"
23. wassup doc? i got a post about this a while ago and am going to post it here. it is not meant to incite a riot nor am i saying these methods don't work -- merely expressing another viewpoint. i personally opt for positive methods first but do realize that some cases require a different approach. Forwarded with permission from Nancy Kerns, editor of the Whole Dog Journal: Nancy says: "I received a press kit yesterday for a new National Geographic show that will be broadcast starting on Sept 13. Called "The Dog Whisperer," it features "behaviorist" Cesar Millan working with a variety of dogs and their owners. The publicist sent me a videotape with about 20 minutes of footage from the new program, which will be a "daily series." Millan has a great personality, very calm but charismatic. And he's shown on tape getting perfect results in each case. However, his methods are anything but positive. In each of the cases shown on the preview tape, he calmly uses force-based methods and works seeming miracles. He's shown in the following situations: Scruffing a mixed-breed small dog into submitting to grooming. (The dog had been growling at and biting groomers and the owner) Using yanks on a pinch collar to prevent a mixed-breed (Rottie mix?) from neurotically looking for lights to chase. The dog had chased a laser light as a pup, and has spent years obsessively hunting for the light again, running around the house and his people's feet. Millan gives the dog some quick jerks, moving his attention away from his quest. Scruffing and holding down an aggressive Chihuahua into accepting contact with other people, and keeping him from going after people he doesn't like in his house. Forcing a Great Dane who is afraid of slick floors and refuses to go on them onto one. I'm afraid that when the public sees this, people will try similar methods on their own-- and it will result in lots of dogs biting their owners. Millan can pull this stuff off (in the cases we see) but it's just the same old fashioned stuff that got people and dogs hurt, presented in a more restrained, pseudo-pschological manner. Anyway, I don't know what, if anything, anyone can do as a pre-emptive strike. Positive trainers should be aware this is out there, it's coming..."
24. aspen is a cgc dog! i actually have a funny story about his cgc. wanna hear it here it goes. when we adopted aspen he was scared of sirens. anytime he would hear a siren (even on tv) he would bark his fool head off. of course we were working with him on keeping calm and realizing we would not let the fuzz take him :D so we get word of a test and we drive an hour only to discover that the test is being held in a building right next to a fire station. we thought nothing of it until we heard that first siren :o the testing had not started yet so all dogs were ring side practicing. somehow we managed to pick a test that also had mostly small dogs. when aspen barked at the siren it got dead silent and everyone turned to see him. it was a comedy. also we had just taught aspen to shake so he thought if he smacked/shake at everyone he would get a treat haha. he was shaking his little heart out with people! aspen was 5th to be tested and first to pass! the level of difficulty really depends on the tester -some are just more liberal in their definition of citizenship. do you have a copy of the rules/requirements for reference? if not you can get them from the akc page. good luck i am sure you will have great success. ps will your private instruction include a distraction dog? if not maybe you could request it since that is one of the cgc tests (reaction to another dog). oh and in case i haven't said enuff you might look around sometimes breed clubs or trainers hold "practice" tests.
25. well it never fails -- everytime we go to the vet we meet the darndest people. i am keeping a journal so that i can compile a book entitled "stupid people i meet at the vet" and here is my most recent account. aspen had just finished his acupuncture and we were at the counter waiting to check out. coincidentally a white toy poodle and his mother finished about the same time. aspen, the most docile creature i have ever had the pleasure of knowing, was sitting politely at my side wondering when another treat might rain down on him. the poodle was, in toy dog fashion, being coddled in the arms of his mother. this woman turns to me and my fiance and with great seriousness says "what is wrong with those dogs? are they just mean?" ever the smarta$$ i replied "why? are you missing a finger?" she did not see the humor in my statement. so i say to her "please observe my vicious beast" and i run aspen through his repetoire of tricks. he is spinning and twirling and speaking like a champ. high fives, shakes and down stays like the true showman i know him to be. sporadically in his routine i give him a charlee bear treat to tell him he is doing wonderfully. the woman was impressed especially when our vet confirmed that aspen is by far the sweetest rottie she has ever met. however she was not content to let it go at that. she looked at me and said "hmmm rather small treat for such a large dog." excuse me? so i politely explained that he is treated generously through out the day and that for this reason we keep the treats small -- lest we end up with a 200 lb rottie! duh! she nods in disbelief -- oh the righteous indignation! so we are still completing our visit and i am called to the counter to sign the cc receipt. i ask this lady if i can pet her poodle to which she replies, "well he thinks he is the boss and he will probably snap at you!" :o :o :o what is wrong with my dog eh? what balls you have miss thang! i always seem to find these people!
