I recently lost a dog and prior to this I had made an offer to buy another dog she rang to say she would sell me the dog two days after losing my other one I felt it was too soon but the dog for sale was what Id been looking for I felt very guilty but I realized that I was not trying to replace one for the other and that each dog is an individual . Its not for everyone but for some it works I think an older dog is a great idea :-?

Hi Hazel , There is a difference between a collie and coolie/koolie . The koolie orginated with a merle colored b/collie it is not found any where else except Australia (here we have records dating back to 180 yrs ago) .When Australia was first settled there were many immigrants and they tended to live in the same areas as immigrants from their homelands. German people were considered lower class (as well as asians and italians ect ) and the germans liked the merle colored b/collies and started their own strains thus forming the german coolies as they were originally called .They were called german because the germans bred them and the coolie/koolie is either due to the german accent or some people think it is because koolie is a term for lowest worker eg slave worker I personal have a german friend and I asked her what collie would soundlike with an accent and it was spot on . The name was changed as there is no c in the german language and the german part was dropped because it is an Australian breed and it caused confussion . The Australian sheperd is believed to have koolie blood as part of its origins (two dogs were believed to have been imported from australia with a flock of merinos) .The Americans then added lassie blood which gave it the shorter snout and thicker coat I could tell you about the bob tail but thats an even longer story :-? So in a big circle the b/collie , koolies and aussies have come . You will notice with the pictures that there is a great variety in koolies this is because they have been outcrossed at times .Its only in the last 40 yrs they have been kept as pets so they pretty much all retain working ablity

All six of my dogs weigh 97 kg in total and they go through 30 kg of dry food a week .They are all working dogs though (except angel) so they tend to burn up the energy ,they are very fit
-
Oh my god is that what they're telling you to do . I never thought of that just proves how sheltered we are in OZ . Maybe they are suggesting window coverage in case of bombing or something . Do they really think you'll get attacks at home ,thats pretty scary .Sounds strange but maybe for goo who wont go inside it would be worth getting some powdered vitamin c .Dogs produce there own vit c 'unlike humans and if given in dosages of more than they need it will give them the runs (it's pretty hard to hold on if you've got the runs although it could be messy) Its also used for snakebites and posions so it might be well worth having some on hand

I agree I could make a blanket out of Angels hair  :o

I personally think there are enough breeds out there . If one was to cross a lab with a retreiver it well may end up looking like a ret. (hair and all) with the lab temp. There are no guarntees with genetics (as Im slowly learning :o ) An example of this is my lab x ret. she's black built like a lab and sheds massive amounts of hair (dont know if this has anything to do with them being double coated ??) Her temperment is like a lab she didnt grow out of digging and chewing till she was about 6 yrs old Dont get me wrong I adore Angel (thats her name) and now at 12 yrs old she is trained to perfection .It is because of this I like to give people my experiences because they can be strong willed and puppy like for a long time I think thats why you will find there are so many lab x in shelters all over the world . Just my 2 cents worth

We pay similar fees dog paddle but our fees go to the local council (who of course do nothing for the animals I think it may pay toward the ranger) sucks huh :x

Mmmm what does this mean :drinking:

I think being a kid I didnt understand completely what was happening although one day the asked me to get a lab from the pens and take it to the vets room and it never went back ,that was when it started to hit me .Mostly we used to make up their food ,feed them (to this day cant stand the smell of half cooked mince) and walk them in the cage play area .We also used to nag mum endlessly to take home an  animal . I would still volunteer there if it wasnt so far away .Ive brought two adult cats there rather than get freebies close to home (takes 2 hrs to get there) The closest shelter to me is 1 hr away unfortunately
-
Well that helps !! I used to volunteer at the RSPCA in Burwood when I was a teenager (seems like forever ago hee hee)
-
I only just found out about it blk so I thought there might be others that didnt know (we're a bit slow in the country)

All Australian dog and cat owners should get yourselves to www.lostdogs.com to receive a FREE id tag and have your dog on a national registry where you can be phoned, emailed or SMS if you dog is found .Great idea huh
-
Frustrating huh know what you mean

With herding poofy one of the common faults is over excitement and this tend to settle down with age .A freind of mine had a kelpie 2yrs old that was an absolute maniac but with constant work by the age of 4 it was unrecognizable I couldnt believe it was the same dog . I totally agree about the seperation of showies and working lines .Personal I wouldnt even look at a dog unless I saw the parent physically working. Does any one have opinions on physical looks of pups and parents (color build ect) ? I have found that the pups tend to take after the parent that they physically look like (not all way but it is too many times to dismiss it ) any ideas?
-
Ive had eight in the car once on the way to the vets but I do have a stationwagon
-
Now there's a new sport j/russels herding mice :D :P :P :P

Mmm thats what I thought just thought I'd pass it on and see if anyone had heard of it before. As with any animal age affects performance some improve some dont
