1. Im hopeless at names :-? I love Lector 'silence of the lambs' was my favourite movie Im going to steal that name for my next pup as Im so not good at picking names :o I named my male koolie Oliver , Ollie for short and the bitch I rescued the same year Millie I didnt realize at the time but Ollie was one of the mascots for the Sydney Olympics so millie was named after a mascot as well they were born in the same year 2000 . Their baby I called Mate as I always refer to my animals as buddy or mate so it was easy that way .Shady Lady got her name from shady being her colouring and lady cause she crosses her legs (I didnt name her) My husband has named his dogs after cars Troopy and cruiser (toyotas) On the other note a leading sheep dog trainer recommends that you change a dogs name if you buy it older as it gets rid of any bad history that the dog has associated with that name and the way it was treated I did it with Millie as she was very neglected I also like to keep their names short and preferably not starting with s as I have so many commands that start with s and it helps prevent confusion . sit stay stop start etc
2. No I haven't been there Hobbit . Have you been here http://stockdog.com/training/training.htm

5. Not judging anyone just wanted to let people know that I lost a dog from eating a raw bone , it didnt splinter but blocked up his bowels :(
6. Speaking of scared doggies I woke up at 6am this morning to hear thunder and Angel my old labx ret was outside as my hubby lets her out in the morning for wee's and I swear I woke up running got outside it was pouring with rain (in a drought so a good thing) she is terrified of thunder and lightening and of course fireworks she seemed to develope this fear when she was 9 year old which was weird luckily she was hiding in the feed shed
7. Hobbit , Carol to be honest if I'd have had a gun on me I would have shot the dog right there and then with out a second thought , thats what I was screaming for my husband to get unfortunately we werent quick enough. To dogwoman Im sorry that you were upset that it was a pit bull and I fully realize that any breed is capable of turning bad . I own working (herding ) dogs and would never leave them unsupervized as I know they have the potential to turn bad because of their strong herding drives I could also list numerous other breeds that I have known of that have been pts because of killing stock so no breed is immuned . What I really resent is bad owners .Owners that tell me but they've never done it before and wouldnt hurt a fly , if you know your dog is bred for a particular purpose be aware and accept the responsibility for training the dog .The main reason I mentioned the breed was in the hopes I could find out more about what they are bred for and how is a hunting dog supposed to react in that sort of situation (as I have no experience with hunting) to try an work out if this dog was a rogue or was it doing what it was trained to do and that would influence my decision as to how I felt about whether the dog could be retrained or not . I am the first to admitt I know nothing about the breed hunting dogs are of no use to me
8. Well where do I start Laduenda I am sitting here at my computer thinking what a cruel and heartless person you must be . Am I not against pit bulls NO it could have been any breed I only mentioned the breed as I wanted to find out more about hunting dogs ,as I readily admitt I do not participate in this so called sport . I witness the attack and was feeling the need to understand was it out of the ordinary or was this what it was trained to do. You may feel that it was okay to prolong my goats suffering to get medical advise but I did not the animal had a broken neck (I have a farm and am not a hysterical woman as you put it I kill my own stock for meat so I am not squemish in an means) its head was half ripped open and she was struggling to breath I doubt she would have made it there . To me this is irrelevant anyway personally as the neighbour who owned the dog offered to replace her I declined as in my eyes she is not replaceable so he admitted that the dog had cause fatal injury to the animal and there is nothing more horrid than people who will extend the life of an animal who is obviously suffering badly. The dog is a pit bull as it was confirmed to me by the neighbour and the ranger . As for why I didnt get the neighbour immediately I guess it was a cross between being shocked at what I was witnessing and not wanting to leave an animal that was in serious trouble ( I helped deliver this goat she was very special to me) and I guess a part of me hoped I might be able to scare it off . I do not know the animals name and it would have taken me 15 -20 minutes to get to the owner I also had 2 other goats located within 5 metres of this attack (I tend to tie then together to prevent fox attacks) so I would have endangered them as well. To everyone else who respond to my post thanks .I spoke to the neighbour last night and we have come to an agreement .He is in the process of obtaining a shock collar and is going to spend the next couple of months retraining this dog on stock (sheep and goats) and after a couple of months he is going to bring the dog to my property and give me a demonstration of the dog with stock and we have both agreed if the dog shows any sign of interest he will get rid of the dog whether it be rehoming or pts . One other point I would like to make if dogs are so good at determining between children and animals why to children get bitten I know its usually a dominance thing but surely a dog thats been trained to attack might feel that a small 5 or 6 year old child is in the same category .Its not unheard of and personally I would not like to test the theory
9. Last night I was feeding my sheep and I heard a dog bark near where I'd tethered my goats (we are in the middle of a drought and there is very little feed so tethering is my only option) I raced down the hill to be confronted by my neighbours pit bull (he uses the dog for hunting and tracking) attacking one of my pet goats she was on the ground and it had mauled her ear and neck I screamed at the dog but was afraid to go up to it as it was in attack mode eventually it got scared off by my screaming and ran home . My poor goat was still alive so we shot her . My neighbour apparently had the dog tied to the back of his ute and it slipped its collar , he offered to replace the goat but I said how can you replace a pet that has a name and numerous other little quirks that seperate her from other goats. Today I rang the ranger and I either have to take him to court or do nothing , it sounds harsh but I want the dog put down I can no longer use half my property for fear it will escape , I dont want to take him to court as I feel this is pointless but I fear for my other animals and children can someone tell me what a hunting dog is supposed to do? Do they go up to prey and pull them down while waiting for the owner or they trained to kill ? Im just trying to make some sense of this :(

13. Hi guys, Just wanted to let you know that Ive change my name due to K legendary computer skills . Every time I did a web search my post used to come up (as there is not much on koolie dogs out there) and because there is not many koolie owners around I felt anyone that has a koolie would know who I am (I like the fact that I have my privacy) so I asked the wizard lady K if she could fix it for me and she did so from here on in Im known as Shady Lady my dogs name thanks guy just though I should explain
14. I'll tell you a story about a person( no names )who had new neighbours move in with two little maltese dog .The dogs were free to roam around because as the owner said they were settling in , well one of the neighbours were chasing these dogs home (they used to chase the livestock) and as the dog run onto the road on the way home one got hit by a car and died .Less than a week later they had a new puppy of the same breed the puppy was only 8 weeks old and it was following the older one down the road only days after having arrived , So one of the neighbours managed to catch the puppy and found a wonderful caring home for it (where it is much loved and looked after ) I can only assume the neighbours got the hint as they never saw their dogs outside the fence again 8)
15.    shouldnt laugh but its a good story
16. hello bit off topic bensam you finally got a scanner  love the photos
17. I dont think you have to either like cats or dogs Im a fan of all animals .My two cats are very affectionate , we lived in a shed for a while (our house was being built ) and my pet hate is mice (alright I dont love every animal) and without my cats to take care of the mice I'd have gone crazy
18. I'm afraid I dont agree with a lot of this info Hobbit as it comes from the other site regarding the coloring this lady is part of their committee . There is a apparently no sign of coolies ever recorded in Germany so I dont know where she got the facts from .As from it being part of the Australian germen sheperd history I think she meant Aussie sheperd as the Australian german sheperd is identical to the world wide one. So I guess that only 10 yrs down the track will we really know what we can expect genetically , meanwhile Im trying to start the trend of breeding solids to merles seems like the best way to all but eliminate the double merle problem :-?
19. Question for the genetic nuts out there. The koolie is predominately a merle breed the records go back over 180 yrs .My question is they have been bred merle to merle for generations apart from blind deafness (and the rare kidney disease ) they are a very sound dog is our gene pool totally stuff . Basically if you can find a solid koolie not from merle parents you'd be doing well I've yet to find one .As far as the double merle gene we must be up to the quadruple merle by now anyone ideas would be appreciated (hobbit where are you??) Another point would be they may have been out crossed over time mostlikely the kelpie (this would explain the red and tans and red merles)
20. Sounds like fun most of us aussies on the board are from victoria australia
21. Paw paw Ive been researching greyhounds for a while absolutely love them there are several sites and greyhound forums that are really good if your interested I could post the addresses here .Here in Australia it cost a couple of hundred dollars to adopt but they are already desex microchipped and health checked they also supply muzzels and coats ,so I think in the whole they are not that expensive Im just waiting until Im set up better
