1. ...that is too funny Carol My sister's dog looks a LOT like Candy and she was told the same thing....Yellow lab/terrier cross : I wish I had a better pic of him... He can jump about 6 feet straight up too....he's great fun to play frisbee with :D
2. I don't know about the REST of Florida, but around here (Gulf Coast/Tampa Bay) it seems most if not ALL of the gated communities/apartment complexes have a very strict breed policy. On my lease it states: "No aggressive breeds are allowed to reside or be kept temporarily on the premises. This includes; GSD's,Pit Bulls(and Pit mixes),Doberman's,Rottweilers,Chows and Akitas. All other breeds are subject to the discretion of the property manager." I'm assuming that these are the breeds that are considered to be an insurance liability... Anyhow this seems to be the typical "badass list" around here....although I've seen an awful lot of ads for Presa Canario puppies in the paper lately,so I'm sure this will be the next condemned breed :-?
3.
OH! I've seen a lab/basset mix....looks just like a black lab with 3 inch legs!!!
 ....my guess is ANYTHING mixed with a Basset is going to turn heads.Someone on another forum I go to has a Basset/Boxer mix...she hasn't posted any pics yet,but I'm DYING to see what THAT looks like :o
4. Oh my...this IS a tough one :-? ...Well I can't say I'll be much help either as I've never been in this exact situation.I have had to introduce a dog with a high prey drive to a very territorial(and believe it or not...dog-aggressive)parrot before though. Anyhow, these are some suggestions that were given to me....maybe some of them will work for you...I guess anythings worth a shot, since it sounds like you and your fiance are both very devoted to your pets :) : First off,is the dog obedience trained? If not this will be more difficult. He needs a good solid "Down,Stay!"....and understand and obey the "Leave it" command The muzzle is a good idea, but also try introducing him to the cat with him(the dog) on a lead.....put him in a down stay and hang on tight.....when he starts to lunge at the cat give him a good firm "leave it!" and put him back in a down stay(remember....praise ,praise, praise when he does what you want him to)....let the cat wander around....make sure (like Deep said) that he has an escape route so he feels more secure. Its also a good idea to make sure(since this IS the cat's territory) that the cats food, litter box and toys are put up during this exercise,so he doesn't feel as much need to protect whats his. This is NOT a guaranteed method by any means!!!! It takes time.It worked for me but it took about 3 weeks of repeating this EVERY DAY (always removing the dog when the other pet gets too agitated) before I could even ATTEMPT an offleash introduction (same drill though...as soon as the dog shows signs of giving chase, use the "leave it" command and put him in a down stay. Is Hershey crate trained??...you might also want to try crating him and allowing Malcolm in the room (always under strict supervision of course...never leave them alone together even with the dog crated) This way the dog can get used to the sight and smell of the cat, and the cat (once he realizes the dog is confined) can sniff around without feeling too threatened. It can't hurt to try,right?...it might not work for you,but you might be pleasantly surprised....give it time though....some animals take MONTHS to get accustomed to coexisting...and like Guest Pat pointed out...some animals NEVER get over their aggression towards each other (I hope this is not the case for you). In any event ,if this DOES work for you,I STILL wouldn't leave them unsupervised in a room.....always make sure the cat can escape to a safe place.......crate the dog or close them in separate rooms when you leave the house and keep their food, toys and beds in separate parts of the house... When I first brought my dog home,he was hell bent on killing my Macaw..... he tried to tackle her cage......threw himself into a plate glass door trying to get at her...tried to chew through a wood panel door because he knew she was on the other side of it.It was a NIGHTMARE. Now they hardly notice each other....the dog is perfectly fine with the bird being out of her cage in the same room(as a matter of fact the dog backs down to HER now)...the bird has stopped trying to fly at the dog and bite him  ....its MUCH more peaceful around here  I wish you and your fiance and Hershey and Malcolm luck. Please let us know the outcome!
5. Welcome back BYRD :D Isn't that the funniest thing about vacations?....You come back feeling like you need a VACATION

Bullmastiffs

Somehow I completely missed this thread  :-?......soooooo,a VERY belated welcome to you granites!!!...and welcome BACK to you,Shannon_C ! :D I just wanted to let both of you know your Bullies are gorgeous!!!
7. Ta Daaaaaa!....you rang? ...Now K...what ever gave you the impression that I like Boxers???? J...I agree with all of the above posts...Boxers ARE a wonderful breed ...but they aren't for everyone.Mei Mei is very right in saying that you need to really be sure the breed suits your lifestyle/living conditions/amount of free time...etc. I think so far everyone has filled you in on the GOOD qualities of the Boxer...so I might as well throw in the not-so-endearing side....just to be objective :D.. -Boxers are a very "in your face" type of dog(picture a 65 lb LAP DOG  ...they like to be wherever their family is and don't take kindly to being left alone,or ignored for long periods of time. Some have a tendancy to develope separation anxiety and become destructive.....crate training is a strongly recommended -They are VERY sensitive to both heat AND cold and should NEVER be considered an "outdoor dog". -they drool, snore, burp and pass gas frequently....if this is a problem for you...don't get a Boxer -they are very intelligent but tend to be stubborn and willful.Obedience training and proper socialization is a NECESSITY...they need to learn to respect that you are the boss. -Boxers are late to mature (that means they act like puppies and do no tend to "settle down" until the age of 3 or 4 years). Boxers require daily exercise! Taking a walk around the block is not sufficient. Jogging or a good play session with a ball or other dog is necessary for your Boxer to expend his energy. Of course, an adult Boxer needs less exercise than one under 3 yrs., but even the elderly dog deserves to be kept happy and fit by engaging in some amount of exercise each day with his owner. Boxers who do not receive proper exercise will most likely be very rambunctious and/or destructive. A tired Boxer is a well behaved Boxer! Also, Boxers under the age of 1 year should NOT be permitted to overextend himself, or participate in excessive running or jumping, as his bones are growing and it can contribute to major orthopedic problems down the road. -Boxers love to chew. Coffee tables, shoes, chair legs, door frames etc... are all fair game. It is imperative that you provide your Boxer with stimulating toys or activities to do when you cannot be around. It is your duty to provide a chewing outlet for your Boxer! -Some Boxers are messy eaters. You may find more kibble on the floor around their bowls, stuck to the wall, or caught in their jowls, than what actually made it into their tummies. Many Boxers send spit, slobber and chunks of food flying across the room after they shake their heads and many consider the couch cushions their personal napkins. -Boxers are prone to many health problems, such as Thyroid, cardiomyopathy, cancer, bloat, allergies, dysplasia, and various skin conditions like mange, seasonal alopecia, hot spots, and skin tags Whew!....with all that said, if you still think the Boxer might be the dog for you, then my advice is to interview as many breeders as possible and/or contact your local Boxer Rescue....maybe even attend a dog show in your area.....handlers and breeders LOVE to talk about their dogs :D All drawbacks aside,in my opinion Boxers are one of the most loving, affectionate, loyal, family oriented, playful and fun loving breeds out there.(see K....I'm, not biased at all  ) Good luck with your search! Let us know what you decide :D

I'm late too!! What was the original question?......and why is Deep whispering?? :-?
9. Happy to hear Toby is feeling better.....shaved butt and all
10. :o ....uh oh...is ISAR bad too???? eeeeek!, horsefeathers, you're supposed to TELL me these things before I go spreading propaganda!!! I always KNEW Bob Barker was evil!!
11. ok.....I did some checking, and Bob Barker apparently does public service announcements for "ISAR"(International Society for Animal Rights)Is anyone here a member???? Here is their spay neuter campaign summary: About ISAR Campaigns: ISAR is the only organization dedicated solely to fighting the tragic pet overpopulation problem and ending the agony animals endure because of it. ISAR advocates the only sensible solution: spaying and neutering all pets. ISAR's campaigns are all designed with one goal in mind, and that is to raise public awareness about the importance of spaying/neutering pets. Education Is The Key Education is key to impacting any social issue and pet overpopulation is no exception. Before we can hope to foster change in society, we must make people aware of the problem and its solution
12.
What is that group of actors for animals called? There are a bunch of actors who are like, animal advocates. Someone help me out here. :)
Corgi,is it "Actors and Others for Animals" that you were trying to think of ? Here is their site url : http://www.actorsandothers.com/ Also ,isn't Bob Barker from The Price is Right a big spay/neuter advocate??My 5 year old son watches that show like a religion and I seem to remember a "help control the pet population" blurb at the end of every show....maybe he's affiliated with "Actors and Others"???...
13. I replied to this same post in "everything about dogs",but I never even THOUGHT of West Nile :o . Great thinking Hobbit!..........as a matter of fact I believe newfiemom posted a thread in here about the symptoms of West Nile in dogs awhile back..... Here is the link : http://forum.dogomania.com/viewtopic.php?t=1804
14. My YES vote is in but we are still in the minority :(
15. ok, SOMEBODY had to start this thread ( I was hoping Gigi would, since she has all the pizzle experience  )....but I had to tell you all about my trip to PetSmart today. I went for dogfood but while I was there I ACTUALLY remembered to look for pizzle (aka bullysticks)....FOUND 'EM!....they're ...ummm.....err....smaller than I expected :o Anyhow, I picked up a braided one for Loki to try, and I ALMOST made it to the checkout before hubby asked what it was :-? .....of course when I TOLD him,he kinda turned green and said there was no way we were having a wet slobbery Bull "appendage" laying around the house   I'll have to sneak back and get one when he's not with me  I TRIED Gigi!!!
16. Great story Sasha :D ...I think Carol is right....strays always seem to know whose doorstep to end up on. My parents live way out in the country, but every homeless and injured animal in the area seems to find its way to my dad......I think they KNOW he can't say no to them. He's harbored everything from abandoned dogs to baby deer...
17. Poor Toby :( I can totally sympathize with you and Toby on the sore, bleeding tail situation Corgilady. I have heard mixed reviews on the toxicity of ingesting of Tea Tree Oil in pets...it seems that some say its safe, and others say its not...soooo, I prefer not to take the chance. I don't know if it will help you, but I've been using Bag Balm on Loki's tail wound. It was developed for cows, but works great for domestic pets as well. You can get it at just about any petstore, and it is safe if ingested by dogs.I still don't take any chances though...I spray a little bitter apple around his tail area, just to keep him from licking...
18. Congratulations on the new "baby"!!! :D Now that you've decided which one you want, you must be so anxious to pick her up. Ahhh well, two weeks gives ya LOTS of time to puppy-proof the house! I love her name (and I'm sure K will be tickled about it too ). We'll all be anxiously awaiting pics...
19. I was just doing some "light reading" of some older posts and it seems to me that "gsd_lover86","Athena" AND "doggielover" are all the same person......either that or its just a RAVING coincidence that all their dogs have the same names...and lo and behold!...doggielover's "real" name is supposedly HEATHER too (how surprising)
my german shepherd females name is anck su namun and her sister is trinity i guess they are kinda odd ?lol

hi iam new to dogomania my name is heather :D iam 18 y/o i have 7 GERMAN SHEPHERDS .TRINITY BLACK&TAN ,LADY RED AND BLACK .ANCK SU NAMUN LONG HAIRED BLACK AND RED .AND PANDORA BLACK&TAN AND ADOLPH SOLID BLACK AND BREE SABLE AND HER SISTER Affinity she is also a sable and i have 1 boxer female Athena she is allmost all fawn with some white there are my babies .i have been showing dogs for about 3 years i also work with the vets around here .if any one can help me out with any info on any thing to do with puppies it would be more then welcome :D thanks heather.

my brother hasd both the mom and dad to thor the white male he loves boxers .and takes very good care of all his dogs :) he has about 3 pair of them that he breeds only once every two years ,thats where i got my female she is almost all fawn with a little white (athena) thank you all for your help i will get some pictures of them on here soon :) athena .
20. EBBY....hi there! Welcome to the forum :D I got your PM...If you'd like to post pics of your dogs, read this tutorial http://forum.dogomania.com/viewtopic.php?t=1643 ...its pretty self explanatory(read the "images in your posts" paragraph)...if you're still having trouble posting pics after that, send me a message and I'll try to help you figure it out. I am so sorry to hear about your friend's Boxer baby!!! I honestly don't know what to tell you :( Has she taken him to a different vet to get a second opinion?? The only thing I can think of is "SPONDYLOLITHESIS" (more commonly known as Wobblers Syndrome): http://www.ardistan.com/writings/dogstories/wobblers.html or maybe "Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy" (although I think this is less likely). http://www.workingdogs.com/doc0018.htm Those are just educated guesses on my part, but please pass those site urls on to your friend...Boxers are prone to both disorders and the symptoms you described sound like "Wobblers",but I'm certainly not an expert...my advice is to PLEASE post a message on this site: http://www.boxercentral.com/forum/ there are many knowledgeable Boxer people there who could probably help you more than I can...I wish you and your friend luck! Please let me know what you find out :-?
21. Awww...thanks Rowie  Just to keep you all updated,Loki seems to be feeling much better...he doesn't flinch as much when you touch near his tail. His operation is scheduled...unfortunately my vet is out of town for a couple of weeks so it won't be done til the end of October...BUT at least it will be done and over with, and I'll keep my fingers crossed that he has no more problems with it. Of course by then, he'll be so accustomed to the spoiling he's been getting from everyone,he'll probably go LOOKING for ways to hurt himself, just to get the extra treats and attention
22. Roo you are an "IP Bloodhound"!!
23.
I "trade" the toys sometimes, usually all Goo's big toys are out in my room (which is blocked off by a board that none of the small dogs can get toys over), and most of the smaller ones are in a big plastic rubbermaid type box. Then when I notice the dogs are getting bored with the toys they have (or that they're destroying them all), I take some out of the box for them, and put the others in the box.
I have to do this with my Macaw,as she bores VERY easily......Loki of course has caught on to this and has taken it upon himself to "swap" toys with her at every possible chance.....if the bird is out and I forget to close her cage door,he goes in and tries to help himself to HER toys.....she has a kong, booda rope and various pressed rawhides that interest him....of course they're all suspended from the cage bars by chains,so I catch him on occasion standing INSIDE her cage tugging at them
24. Loki likes anything that comes wrapped in a PetSmart bag :D (must be the smell...he recognizes those bags the second I come in the house and bounces around like a maniac til I show him what's inside  ) Some of his favorite's are rope toys,Kongs (especially if they're stuffed),frisbees...oh and of course his all time favorite..the coveted BALL .Its like an appendage :o...he carries it EVERYWHERE,and even when he sleeps he has to be touching it.
25. I'm sorry,Carol!...to answer your question,he is between 18 and 24 months (he was a rescue so we're not EXACTLY sure),so you're right....he does have a lot of years ahead of him...not to mention he's a VERY active dog,so the tail would probably end up damaged frequently if it isn't fixed :-?
