To our 'anti culling' guest, what you say about signing contracts etc can leave people open to alot of legal dispute and causes alot of unnessisary hassle! I don't get the double standard here, its not ok to breed mutts and unregistered dogs, but its ok to breed and sell other dogs that don't fit into any standard catagory? Why don't you just say "breed your dogs, it doesn't matter what mongrel they are, as long as the pups are desexed its all fine!" But who's going to enforce the desexing of these dogs that are all so unfit to be bred from? In another forum I'm in, someone is getting sued 1000's of dollars for a dog because it had a heart murmer, even though the person signed a contract saying they would get the dog vet checked within 72 hours of getting it, they didn't. This is a perfect example of what can go wrong if a simple contract is signed, and can't be enforced. I say can't be, because what if someone from another state buys it? No breeder can run around, checking all their pups to make sure the owners have followed instructions. Large kennels have so many litters a year it would be impossible and unnesissary to place all these white pups born, selling them at a price no one wants to pay for a dog that can never be shown (yes, microchipping etc costs DO add up), and also worry about legal contracts AND making sure they are followed through, all along with making sure the other litters are in prime health etc. There is no right or wrong here, just a matter of how capable a breeder is of placing these dogs to the right homes, and there is a limited number of good homes as it is, as well as far too many Boxers in the Boxer rescue who are in need of one of these good homes.

I used to have a canary called Tilly, but I like Truffles more.... go with Truffles. TRUFFLES TRUFFLES TRUFFLES !!!! :D

Of course! But why stop at the dogs??! Every birthday in this house is a big occasion, with cake and pressents and lots and lots of cuddles!!!! My rats always get huge partys, with lots of patty cakes and I even invite friends over, we don't play pass the parcell, we play pass the rat!!! As for my fish, I don't celebrate their birthdays because I have no way to tell how old they are!!! Instead (call me crazy) but I buy them a present every fortnight and play with them every day (tap on the tank and they follow me around). My cat Tiger's birthday is a coupla days after mine, so we just have a combined party. He's turning ten this year!!! But as for the dogs, their partys are massive, with cake, huge presents from all the family and picknics, swims, and very long walks!!!! Even 6 month partys are a big occasion here, with a special present, a big fat hug and a nice bit of cake! At christmas our pets have thier own tree!!! My pets are my babys, and I make sure they get nothing but the best!!! One question though, how do you spoil a scorpion? Think for Max's birthday he'll have to just settle for a "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!", no cuddles for him!!!

and you can't forget Poochy!!!

Responsible breeding is all about improving the breed. White dobies, boxers and gsd's aren't albino, they are throw backs. The white is in the genes and sometimes the odd pup turns up that is white. Some breeders 'cull' (put to sleep) the white pups, so as not to further spred the gene, as well as avoiding potential health problems later in life. Others make the purchaser sign a contract that the dog must be desexed by a certain age (usually 6 months or before the first heat if it is a bitch), as well as disclaimers for any health problems that may show up later in life. As I said before, it is the breeders choice, personally if Lily had any white pups I couldn't bring myself to cull them, but with larger scale kennels it is inapropriate and unreputable to let these dogs live. White dogs of these particular breeds, and I'm sure others too, can never be bred from or showed, but only be kept as pets. :(

I don't think this is a matter of us looking at the top ten and getting that breed, we have all made our individual decisions and picked the breed we thought best suited to our lifestyle and that we connected with. It is quite obvious that we all love our dogs, not because they are the top ten but because they are our dogs and we love them!!! Of course we are proud that the breed we own is considered great by other people!!! Every one wants different things from their dog, and all dogs are suited to different people. This list is probably simply made up of an evaluation of what dogs are best suited to the 'typical' family, not a list of dogs that you should buy because they are considered perfect!!!

Sassy, Sheeba, Skitzo, Sally, Sammy, Snookums, Shelby... Just a few ideas :D

Boxers have far less genetic defects than most other breeds, your case sounds like a one off and it must have been very distressing for you, I honestly don't know what I'd do if anything happend to my Lily. The only thing you really have to watch with Boxers is heart murmers, which is a simple trip to the vet. Great breed boxers are... the only problem with the white ones is that they are more susseptible to other genetic defects, such as deafness etc. Don't let that put you off though, they are great dogs and need loving homes, many breeders cull them when they are born. I was shocked to hear that one of Lilys littermates was culled, but it all comes down to the decision of the breeder. Check out some Boxer rescues, there are plenty around as boxers can be a very abused breed, especially the white ones. Good luck, and I know you will find the perfect dog because as we all know, all boxers are perfect! :D

Yay for Beagle!!! Keep up the good work girl, I did and it worked for me!!! :D Yorkie, notice most of the breeds were medium to large breeds? It didn't specify what size poodle it meant, but I'm assuming it meant standard poodle. Large dogs are often better 'family' pet as they aren't so susseptible to feeling the pain of childrens touchy grabby hands!!! Oh, and Gizmo, don't worry, I'm sure you know deep in your heart that Pits would be right at the very second top of the list if it werent for those numbskull owners who tend to flock towards them!!! (second only to the Boxers... hehehe, and equal to Beagles!!!)

Could have guest most of them myself, but Great Dane , Saint Bernard and Akita??? Whats wrong with them? I thought they had good reputations! Guess I'm a little Akita bias, seeing as I used to walk one and know an Akita breeder. And I thought German Shephards were listed as one of the 'most perfect' breeds? Hmm, I wonder who came up with these statistics, although I do have to give whoever named the boxer as one of the most perfect (if not the most perfect) credit for knowing their boxers! :P

I knew it, Boxers are in the list!!! Always knew they were the perfect dog

Like I said, he was very special
I saw a dog do the Mexican Hat Dance once and it was really cute. Maybe you could teach Lily to dance around a hat (the music actually adds a lot to this trick).
LOL, sounds like fun!!! Lily would probably just lie and chew the hat! Its a dogs life, aint it! 8) Beagle, thankyou. We all go through times in life where everything just seems to go wrong, I guess the only thing to do is to look forwards to what tomorrow may bring. I'm going to buy two new fish tomorrow to replace Buddy and Bubbles, they will have the same name but no fish could ever replace Buddy, he used to follow me around the tank all day and let me rub his tummy, its unlikely I will ever find another fish like him. Bubbles is special too, I bought him the day my boyfriend left to go to New York, I even got Mark to name him. I can get another fish like Bubbles, but it wont be the same. Although they wont be the same, I'm sure they will have their own unique qualitys that make them special. Its times like this where unless I look at the positives, the negatives will get me down to the point were I bring those closest to me down as well. I have to at least try to stay happy, if not for me, for the rest of my family and my dogs!

Great choices Tim!!! Vizlas are great dogs, good for almost any situation and very trainable. Don't know much about chinooks, but they are beautiful!!! Happy hound hunting! :D

Thank you for your sympathy, if that wasn't bad enough, we got a phone call last night that Opa has fallen and needs an entire face reconstruction, fractured his skull etc. Then to top it off I came home to my two favourite fish dead  It's giving me a headache just thinking about it all. Candybug, its hard to say how to teach a dog to do all these tricks as all dogs learn differently, Tessa is a cattle dog cross so she's very smart and willing to please therefore easy to teach. She also knows the find trick too, she finds the keys on command
-
LOL, Tessa already knows all those tricks!!! Except for 'beg' and the hanky one, but that would be cool!!! I wanted to teach Lily something cool, that Tessa doesn't already do!!! Tessa speaks on command, but that idea could never work for Lily because she doesn't bark!!! I've heard her bark maybe three times all up her whole life!!! I should be glad, but what kind of guard dog would she make?  Beg would be cool, an easy one to do to show off cauz I don't need any baskets/hankeys etc. The reason I like the basket one is because she is a natural carrier, so I could work on that. I want something more challenging than hi 5 etc, Boxers get bored with easy commands, besides, it would take me 5 minutes to teach her and then I would be bored too!!! Thanks for the suggestions though, keep em comeing!!!! I probably wont be online for a few days though... my grandmother died last night and I have to travell to her funeral  I think mum might let me take Lily down, I hope so because I think she's going to go in heat soon and I'd be worried sick if she was being looked after by anyone else who didn't realize exactly how imperetive it is that she doesn't get pregnant!
-
With Lilys obedience classes we are required to choose one trick to teach our dog. I was wondering if any of you could think of something cool I could get Lily to do. 8) I was thinking maybe something like bringing a basket to me, or packing an over night bag, with like a collar, lead and squeeky toy :D Any other suggestions?

I used to breed rats and mice for about ten years. There is so much to learn!!! I also did biology at school and learnt about genetics there, its pretty tricky but oh so interesting!!!!!!! I love to learn about things that interest me, I could spend a whole week straight reading up about genetics, or dog nutrition, or training methods etc. A good idea is to look up a search on just genetics, you'll find alot more in there that you can apply to dogs. Contact teachers of universitys etc, they could tell you alot, its always best to talk to people about it, they can answer questions as well as explain things that couldn't possibly be explained on paper. Well, best of luck! :D
-
Could anyone explain to me exactly what line breeding is?

The problem with the internet is that every Tom, Dick and Harry can put in what they *think* is right. I think your best bet is to write to the Canine Counsil of your area and they should help you out with some *good* sites.

Well, Lily had her first training lessons today!!!! So many cute doggys to see!!! There was the most cutes little bulldog pup and I could just hear Lilys thoughts... "wow, that dogs got a flatter face than me!!!" Everybody complemented Lily, and some of the real dog show people asked me if I showed her and said she has definate possibility!!! Anyway, I went to Vinnies yesterday to get a cheap bum bag, so I could get her treats easy enough. She was a little distracted at times, but apart from that she was pretty good. I think next weekend I'll bring out a toy as well so I can rotate between toys, treats and hugs. There were so many good training tips too! You know how a dog that is always responsive to you and keeps looking up to you is easier to train? Well, we got taught this silly trick, to walk around the house with blue tack stuck to your forehead, everynow and then stick some food to it and as soon as the dog see's it give it the food, sounds stupid but it works!!! We learnt heaps of stuff like that, its not only an obedience class but there is so much taught just for making a more easy to live with dog, they gave us a booklet and all. Afterwards I did Tessas agility with her while dad took Lily for a walk to the creek. Tessas only been doing agility a few weeks and they've already moved her up to the advanced classes!!! She's super smart, and she's really good at it. Apparently while I was doing agility, there were all these dogs from Lilys classes down at the creek and Lily was running around with them all, there was a layer of ice on the creek which Lily put her foot through, and dads come back to the car and said "Lily was with all the other dogs and Lily broke the ice and they all got along!!!"lol. Its been a fun day for me and the dogs, I've decided that Lily probably wont need a halter after all, the training instructers are so good they teach you to teach your dog so well its not neccissary... maybe for the Beagle it might be though    I'll keep you all posted on any other training tips I learn along the way :D

An easy, quick and effective way to kill surface bacteria without cooking the meat or the bones is simply to pour boiling water over the raw meat, don't soak, just leave it long enough to kill surface bacteria. So easy yet so effective. As for raw eggs, don't feed raw egg white, as raw egg white can stop dogs from producing certain enzymes (or something like that, either way, they are bad). Instead seperate the yolk from the white and cook the white and add the yolk raw.

Most people couldn't be bothered, not to mention nobody wants to admit that their dog was too much to handle. Yes, they are mean people, but some people lack what we call a heart :(
