1. What is ephedra? Why is it bad? I'm taking it that it is addictive or something, thats why they want it banned, but if that is the case why would they put it in animal supplements? It doesn't make sence to me, vitamins do the world of good, why would anyone want to ban them? :-?
2. Thanks for that. I've got some of that raid spray with egg stopper, though I think that could just be for the cockroaches, I've sprayed around with that but haven't had a chance to flea bath the dogs since then (I know I should have done them on the same day!). When I bought the spray it was a bit of a toss up between that and a flea bomb, I wasn't sure which would be better - does anyone know how effective flea bombs are? It said it lasts nine months.
3. Signed - and I'm sending it on to every one I know, posting it in all the email lists, and spreading the word - its about time somebody did something about it, too many animals are dying each year from careless breeders, and pet shops who only give a rats arse about the money.
4. Monties got fleas. He spends all the time scratching and I feel so bad, I've given him flea baths, but then he's scratching again the next day! Does anyone have any suggestions on a not too expensive way to eliminate fleas? I've looked into fronline and that, but to do my dogs it will be like $80 that I just don't have to spare! Has anyone else been in this situation before? Its very frustrating, none of our dogs has ever had a problem with fleas before, but Monties problem just doesn't seem to go away!
5. Is it ok to mix different types of meat? I remember hearing once that it wasn't, but then I thought about it and that doesn't make any sence. Montie and Cassie get chicken necks for dinner every night, I make meat balls for their morning meal using mince. Lily gets grinded chicken carcass, which includes some offal, as well as meat and bone, which they sell 10kg for $5 which is pretty much as cheap as you'll find dog food anywhere! Montie and Cassie love this, but I don't want to replace their chicken neck meal with it because they need the bones each day to keep their breath from smelling too bad. I found out this morning that if I mix their meat balls with the chicken pet mince that they love the meat balls too, which before they wouldn't eat unless they were starving! I don't want to cut out their meat ball meal, thats what I add eggs to, cod livern oil, kelp and all those other goodies. So if I mixed a portion of chicken mince into their meat balls would this be ok?
6. Congratulations!!! Welcome to the mania of multiple dog ownership. People will think you're crazy, I can vouch for that. First we had just two dogs, Tessa, a kelpie, cattle dog, pig dog cross, and Puddles, a minature Poodle cross chihuahua. Then I decided to get a Boxer - why do you want another dog? Everyone asked me, but I was determined and so I got Lily. Then about a year later we saw this little Lab x puppy at training looking for a home, dad said I've got too many dogs (though Puddles is my sisters), so I reminded him that none of them were HIS dogs, and he needed one of his own, and so we got Donna. A couple of months after that I realised that I really *needed* a little dog of my own, a Papillon to be exact. People thought I was mad when I said I was looking for another dog, we already had 4, but again, I was convinced, and so I got Montie. Lily and Tessa didn't get along, I couldn't handle their fights so Claire said she'd take Tessa and I moved out with Lily and Montie. After just two months I felt so bad that Montie didn't have Puddles to play with any more, and decided he needed a friend (or could it be that I just wanted another dog? ) so two days ago I got another Papillon, an ex breeding, show dog, Cassie. People though we were crazy when we rocked up to dog training every weekend and five dogs came piling out of the car - they always got a good laugh out of that, but now I'm beggining to wonder what they'll think when we have SIX dogs jumping one after the other, out of the car  Oh, and I musn't forget to mention that I've already got my next Papillon all planned out, the kennels it will come from, the lines it will have (similar lines to Montie) and all the rest! They are really a very addictive breed. Dad is always trying to steal Montie, every time he leaves my house he's got Montie under his arm, trying to smuggle him out, and to make things worse, my sister Claire is now trying to steal Cassie!!! I'm getting dad a Papillon as soon as he's got a new job and has settled somewhere, Claire has told me that when I start breeding Papillons she will take two from the first litter. Seems like I've started a family tradition! Oh, and I think mum will probably want one too! lol Gosh I can ramble when it comes to my dogs! I've also got three rats and a few gold fish, cat fish, minnows etc, now people are starting to call my house a petting zoo  Anyway, glad to hear of your new dog to be, maybe my story has given you some insight to what could also happen to you!
7. Yeah, I'd have to disagree with some of them too. Rat Terriers are pretty common here, my cousin used to have one and you see them all the time running around the streets getting into trouble   They don't have Papillons on the list, I guess they wouldn't be considered rare in some places, but aside from my own two and Monties parents, I have only seen two other Papillons in my life, one of them was at training and was the final push that made me get one of my own after years of wanting one! It took me three months to track down Montie, then about a month to track down Cassie, after dozens of emails to breeders around australia. I guess different countries just have different rare breeds :-?
8. Well hopefully I will be going to dads at some stage over the weekend so I will be able to post pics!!! I've got some gorgeous shots of her, there's a really cute one of her and Montie looking up at the camera, and another one of Montie that is absolutely TOO cute that I will also have to post  I'm working on fattening her up at the moment, she absolutly loves chicken necks and she also loves the little meat balls I make, which I'm adding a little extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkle of vitamin supplement on to help her grow a beautiful coat. I'm also working on getting her to go for longer walks, which is going well, the first walk we went on she was tired after a very short while, and I had to carry her for the last bit. Today we went for quite a long walk, and she even found the energy to chase a flock of galahs with Montie, it was so cute! They looked like minature border collies chasing flying feathered sheep! lol. She's all tuckered out now though, lying on the bed with Montie, half asleep with one eye open looking at me. They look so cute together
9. I'm working on it!!! Next time I visit dad I'll get them up, I promise!!!
10. Yes, there will be photos asap!!! It might be a little while though, because this stupid computer wont download my kodak software so I can only load photos onto the computer at dads, which I then have to put on my web page, and only then can I put them up on dogo! Hopefully I'll have my own computer soon, Josh is thinking of buying the latest iMac for me to use, which is great because I can't use these bloody PCs and I'll be able to get my kodak software working again! THEN you will be over loaded with pictures, trust me!!!
11. My new papillon, Cassie, got here yesterday. For those who don't know, I got her from a breeder I'd been emailing as I was interested in getting a friend for Montie, and this breeder has an excellent reputation so she was the first breeder I approached. A black and white bitch caught my eye and I asked if she'd be having any litters this year, and the reply was that she has had her time for breeding and is being desexed and finding a good home to go into "retirement". So, seeing as Montie was in dire need of a friend asap, and an older dog would make just as good a friend for Montie as a puppy, I asked if I could have her! So, after a bit of a wait and a lot of preperation and anxiousness I have finally got her! As I expected, Montie is falling in love with her already, I wish I had my camera handy because he is snuggled up next to her on the bed right now, its so gorgeous!!! :iloveyou: She arrived just after 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. I'd arranged to meet Claire with her at Claires work so we could walk home and go for another walk when she could meet Lily. Claire finnished work at 5pm so pretty much as soon as she got here I had a chance to sit with her for a few minutes before putting on her new walking harness and lead and carrying her out the door. I had Montie on another lead, they hadn't met yet so I carried her until we got to a nearby park where I put her down so Montie could meet her. She was very nervous, being 4 years old and just taken away from everything she's ever known and shoved into this new environment, with new people, dogs, a new house, all new smells etc. She just stood there while Montie sniffed her for a second and then decided to keep walking. So we walked to Claires work and met her there and Claire instantly fell in love with Cassie. By the time we got home Cassie was still very nervous. I decided to ring dad and get him to take Lily for the night, Cassie had been through enough for one day already so I decided to wait to introduce her to Lily. So Lily has been having a blast over night having a slumber party with Donna! So for now I just have two Papillons curled up on the bed, they are so gorgeous. Cassies ears hang lower than Monties, and she has such a softer face. She is a bit scruffy at the moment, she just got desexed two weeks ago and not too long ago had a litter of pups delivered by ceasarian, when for no reason the vet chopped all the fur off her tail! Ontop of all that all the stress that has been going on yesterday and today is making her loose handfulls of fur. Give her time though, with Armidales cold climate and plenty of brushes, pats and massages, and plenty of raw food, she'll fatten up and grow a lovely fluffy coat like Montie has since I've had him - he's so soft and fluffy now! I can't wait till she's settled in and I can take her to show her off at obedience - Montie always got head turns, but yesterday walking with two Papillons the number of head turns was astounding! Everyone who walked past stared at them smiling  Well I could ramble on here all day, but I have a new dog to cuddle! Oh... and that assignment thats due too, but Cassie is convincing me she needs my attention more lol
12. Sorry I haven't replied for so long, been busy over easter, and of course, preparing for the new one! :D lol hillside, yes, she has legs!!! And I'll agree I am turning into K, only I'm a sucker for the small and fluffies while her weakness is the buff and wrinklies  So here is the good news - I've got her now!!!! :bday: She's so gorgeous, but so different to Montie!!! Montie is a very tiny, petite little Papillon with a little round head, while she is more like a scaled down border collie with gigantic ears! I got her yesterday afternoon and she is settling in nicely, still a bit unsure of herself and flighty in her new surroundings, but she is quickly becoming calmer and more at ease. I'll write another post about her though!!!! I'm so happy
13. Thats so sad, it breaks my heart to hear of such a wonderfull, happy little breed being so ill bred and treated so badly. I'm glad to hear her life was looking up before she died though. The hole in the heart was most likely from bad breeding, Papillons are a very hardy little breed which don't generally get many genetic disorders, all of Monties ancesters went under anesthetic and underwent all sorts of tests before he was brought into this world, and I'm sure Cassie is the same! Did your friend end up getting another dog? I hope this experience didn't put her off the breed  I sure did get a great find though, there aren't many Papillons in Australia so I did a search for some of the dogs in Monties pedigree to see if he was related to her. Well a couple of the other dogs at the same kennel were actually related to him! I was so proud, then I realised that the reason Cassie isn't related is because her lines are completely from the UK! Five more days to go... I went and bought her a harness and a bowl today... its finally starting to sink in that I'm getting another dog!
14. Thanks every one... only 6 days to go until she's mine! Fabk, your black hoverwart looks so much like my friends dog!!! She was found in my friends mothers yard, lying on the front doorstep on deaths bed, if she had gone another day without food she would have starved to death. She has been abused and is very nervous of people and strange situations. I couldn't for the life of me pick what breeds she could be, my closest guess was probably kelpie saluki cross or something, but now, although they are rare and its quite unlikely, I'm thinking there's a possibility she may have some hoverwart in her! Hopefully I'll get some photos of her up here some day. Courneck, I never actually asked how many litters she's had - I know the site hasn't been updated for a very long time now so I think that may have something to do with it. I think she has some very good dogs from her lines though, I know of some in the US going back to her lines. Although 2 show dogs doesn't neccessarilly mean only two were of show quality, probably last time the site was updated Cassie would have only been 2, and Paps only have about 3 pups per litter, plus this breeder doesn't over breed her dogs by any means and sells a lot to just pet homes. Good eye though Courtneck, I didn't even realise it said that! TDG, well there is no way I can no 100% they will get along, but I know Cassie has lived around other Paps her whole life, and Montie has for most of his so hopefully they will be happy to see a familiar face. Also, once Montie gets to know another little dog he always falls in love with it, plus with Cassie being a girl hopefully they wont have the same sex battles going on between them. Mei-Mei, they are addictive, and you can never just have one, the temptation to get another one is just too strong :evilbat:
15. I just want to break the great news to you all that I'll be adding another Papillon to the family  Since I've moved away from Monties best friend, Puddles, he has become very lonely. He always hassles Lily to play, but she's too big and doesn't know what to do, so he comes to me, dancing around doing play bows, and I feel so guilty that I can't play with him like another dog could, so I decided to go on the search for a friend for him! I emailed the breeder at Quinvale Kennels: http://www.users.bigpond.com/quinvale/ As you can see she's an excellent breeder and I've had my eye on those kennels for quite some time. I always said I'd get a Papillon from those kennels, but I never knew it would be quite so soon! I asked in my email if one particular bitch that caught my eye was having a litter at all this year: http://www.users.bigpond.com/quinvale/ She caught my eye, as she obviously looks gorgeous, and looks a little bit like Montie. I received an email back saying that she was being desexed the next week and going to a new home. I wasn't particulary after a puppy, I actually quite liked the idea of getting an adult that wouldn't get tired from Montie! So I asked if she'd found a new home yet, which she hadn't so I told the breeder all about Montie, our house, Lily, what I do with the dogs etc so she could decide weather I would provide a suitable home for Cassie. She must have been impressed, although I didn't mind paying what ever she asked (within reason), she isn't interested in money and only wants a good home for Cassie which she can trust, so she is giving Cassie to me for nothing! Cassie is getting her stitches out on the 12th of this month, after that I have to find a way to transport her and she's mine! :D I'm so happy, I can't wait to introduce Montie to his new friend!!! He's going to be so happy, and I wont be forever feeling bad that he doesn't have a friend his size. I'm looking forwards to getting her into agility and obedience and will keep you all updated on her progress!!! And of course there will be plenty of pics!
16. Ski holiday eh? When is this that you are talking about? Depending on weather it clashes with uni etc I might take you up on that! Oh, and I'd get the added bonus of having two malamutes to snuggle with! :D
17. I'm so excited for you! Its good to hear that Indys behaviour has improved too, I've noticed that with Lily and Montie, it's like they are in competition with each other and since I've moved and have been training them together their reactions have been so sharp, Lily always used to take her sweet time at obedience and agility, but now she's so much more focused, its like they are trying to out do each other! The first couple of months are just great aren't they, when you see them start to become "your dog", forming an attachment to you and growing in their personality. Same as BK said, if you ever need a dog sitter...
18. Thats just too cute! :D First the first time in my life I actually got roses this valentines day!!! I'm a very happy girl
19. I think I have about three topics I have posted in NDR, they pretty much explain why none of us can stay at dads any more. Its a long story so I wont go into it all here, but to cut a long story very short Willem (my brother) is schizophrenic and is getting worse, he attacked me quite severely the other day and threw Lily against a wall, as well as that Montie is getting very nervous here and I'm afraid that if he didn't get out of the situation soon he would be scarred for life. I have been at Neens two nights now, just home visiting to get my dogo fix now! Montie is settling in greatly and for the first time since I got him his eyes have stopped weeping completely, meaning for the first time in about 4 months he isn't at all stressed! Lily is at the kennels, I'm going to visit her bearing gifts tomorrow and take her for a walk. Hopefully after the RSPCA adopt a pet day tomorrow some of the dogs at Neens may find homes and I might be able to have Lily there with me. Its only a temporary situation, and I will have my own place where I can have all my pets, as well as care for RSPCA pets temporarily, in less than a month :D
20. I'm so excited for you! What breed is Toffee??? He must be so cute!!! I can't wait to see pics of him!!! As for Goldens, look at web sites from all different countries, often one counties variation of the breed will capture your heart more than anothers, eg swedish papillons are absolutly gorgeous (well they all are!) and european boxers are all beefy and gorgeous, like Lily  Also, different lines from different countries have more or less genetic problems, eg the Australian Bulldog was bred specifically to lessen the major inherited problems associated with the breed, and alsations in america have much more slanted backs than here, which gives them more problems. So if you're spending the money to import, you might as well thouroughly search the lines and chose the ones you like the most :D
21. My ex from a few years back did a computing course at TAFE and was telling me that if you want your page to pop up at the top of the searches to write words in the back ground that no one can see. It just seems this dumb arse was trying to do that but is such a dip stick and couldn't even get that bit right. I'm fuming right now, he says he's not a puppy miller - then what is he? What is the definition of a puppy miller? He couldn't possibly be giving all of those dogs the care, money and attention they need and deserve, and trying to sell his un ethical practices to others is down right dispicable. Is there no one we can report him to?
22. You're right mouse, either way there's no way I would have left him here. I've got good news though! I ran Neen last night, I think she just expected Montie would be coming, every time I visit her I bring Montie! So she said of course Montie can come!!!! So I'll be picking him up again today - he'll be happy that he had a night with Andy, but he'll also be happy to be coming with me. He just loves the farm! But I don't have to live a month without my Montie! As for Lily, still no luck finding her a place to go. Neen has organised for her to stay at the kennels. I think she is friends with the owners of the kennels so they don't mind looking after Lily for a while. Although its not the best place she could have gone, at least its away from Willem. I'm also hoping that the time away being treated like a "dog" will help her get over her status issues. She's always been very spoiled, so maybe it'll toughen her up a bit, and even though she probably wont have play time with the other dogs, being around them will probably be good for her
23. Well Montie went off to Dwaynes today where he will be safe until I move into my new house. I miss him so much! A lady in the rat email list I'm on said she might be interested in getting another dog. I gave her the link to one of Monties photos, and she's fallen completely in love with him and I think she wants one! So I've been digging up breeders web pages, and more photos of Montie and its all just making me miss him more! He's only been gone a few hours, and I know he's happy where he is, but god I miss him! I might actually ask Neen if I can have him there - for those who don't know I'm staying with my boyfriends mum for a few weeks, she's a mad dog lover and has over 20 dogs, including a husky sled dog team (gorgeous dogs!), a little poodle chihuahua cross, and a variety of RSPCA dogs, she loves Montie so hopefully she wont mind if he stays with us also - I just can't live without my little fluffy bum! I still haven't found anywhere for Lily to go, but I know I'll miss her like crazy too :-? I want my baby back :(
24. 18 out of 25 - not a perfect score, but at least more than the average! Some of those questions really had me stumped :o
25.
I dont know what the most popular breed is in CANADA But In one of your provinces NOVA SCOTIA I know waht it is..Tollers
Are you sure about that? My friend from Nova Scotia has never even heard of a Toller befor! Maltese in Australia huh? Sounds about right, they are EVERYWHERE!!!!! Montie is actually about to stay with a couple of maltese friends for a few weeks now, their owner is coming to pick him up in an hour. Although, that is just the registered dogs, I'm sure kelpies and cattle dogs would be the most common dog through out australia if they included all the ones that aren't registered! Still trying to find out what a Lundehund is...
