1. CRAP!!! do you know the dogs, or the puppy?
2. whichever one you like better Mouse...I wont be insulted if it's not mine.    I wrote mine because I got sick (mostly of my mom) of people complaining that my dogs "were in the way", "left hair all over" "the couch is covered with hair" "they smell"...and I would pretty much have to recite all the facts in the poem. this is the price you pay for having the dogs. I clean up the hair all the time, but there is always SOME that seems to be there when guests come over. I actually told someone once that "fine. you dont want dogs. dont have any. But police chiefs have already declared that a dog is the best deterent to a burglary. If you get robbed, I dont want to hear about it." :D :D :D
3. I'll be watching! for the beautiful Border Collie and the cute blonde...    you're never gonna live that down, y'know....
4.
Essentially he is a teenager and from what I hear, raising a teenager is no fun!
being the mother of a teenage boy, I can tell you with certainty it's NOT.... with Kyle, I use reverse psychology. I dont tell him to do something, I ask him. If he doesnt do it, the next time HE asks for something, I say "well, since you didnt...." That shores him up pretty quick. it probably wont work with a dog. But disobedience can be stopped by simply ending the session, right then. No treats. no praise. nothing good. Then when HE wants something, food, treats, attention, again give the comand he ignored, and when he does it, reward him with what he wants.....hmmmm. maybe it is the same scenario.....
5.
When I always say that just like with a larger breed chihuahuas and other small breeds are dogs and can be trained and it's the owners of the individual dogs that are a problem.
I agree 150% - the other bad thing is that these dogs are also aggressive. Their owner is one of those macho-morons who thinK a Chi that "takes on a human" is cute....GGGRRRRR.....they growl/bark/snap at anyone who comes near, including me, and up until these two I have yet to find a dog I couldnt get along with. They threaten my dogs through the fence. My dogs together outweigh them 150 times....I have told him he is setting himself up for disaster, these dogs will bite someone someday, who WONT think it's "cute"..... thanks for understanding. I've known DAL a long time here, and I know she wouldnt be derogatory about a breed in general... 8)
6. I dont think DAL calling them "yippy little taco dogs" was meant as an insult to Chihauhau's in general. She explained she couldnt spell Chihauhau (neither can I, usually) and I have two Chi's next door which are VERY yippy-yappy. While I dont dislike Chi's in general, I DO dislike these two. or I should say, I dislike their arrogant, uncaring owner, who puts them out at 6:00 a.m. and lets them yap all day long in the yard. I come home at 6:00 p.m. and they're STILL there, yapping....on Saturday and Sunday, when I want to sleep in, it's REALLY annoying.... I have talked to him about it, and all he says is "dogs belong outside. I dont leave them out at night becasue Animal Control says I have to have a doghouse then"...this guys yard backs up to my bedroom window.... so please dont be insulted by what DAL said. I dont think she meant it the way you took it. :D
7. oh Mutts....Ringo, and the dogs, are just beautiful. I love the big cats. I wish I could do what you're doing...just seeing them everyday would make my day. Wolves, too. I am so glad there are rescue societies that will take them in. There is apparently a cougar loose here, which they are using Foxhounds to trail (from Laurel's kennel) and there is a rescue society onsite with a dart gun to take it down and then move it to a sanctuary.
8. :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: leave the poop there. Cover it, and the surrounding area in BLACK PEPPER... NOT red pepper, BLACK. one sniff. and the dog will sneeze his head off. and NEVER want to return. and it wont hurt him at all... :evilbat: :evilbat:
9. this is what I use with Laurel (and we have the wake-up time up to 5:00 now)...dogs starts wanting attention. I yell (loud) NO! DOWN! she usually doesnt lay down, but she leaves the room and comes back 10-15 minutes later for another shot. I still issue the command and ignore all of her attempts to get me up. I KNOW she doesnt have to pee.... then at 5:00 (the current "acceptable" time. I will keep increasing it) I get up. let her out, and then feed her. She feels rewarded by the feeding and then comes and lays down. It takes time, but it does work...
10.
this is their home, this is their space
that should have said "this is their place" I cant type
11. heres another one you can use - no copyright infringements, I wrote it. It's hanging by my front door. My dogs live here, they’re here to stay. you don’t like pets, be on your way. they share my home, my food, my space this is their home, this is their space. You will find dog hair on the floor, they will alert you’re at the door. they may request a little pat, a simple “no” will settle that. It gripes me when I hear you say “just how is it you live this way? they smell, they shed, they’re in the way….” WHO ASKED YOU? is all I can say…. They love me more than anyone, my voice is like the rising sun, they merely have to hear me say “C’mon girls, time to go and play” then tails wag and faces grin, they bounce and hop and make a din. They never say “no time for you”, they’re always there, to GO and DO. and if I’m sad? They’re by my side and if I’m mad? they circle wide and if I laugh, they laugh with me they understand, they always see. so once again, I say to you come visit me, but know this too…. My dogs live here, they’re here to stay. you don’t like pets, be on your way. they share my home, my food, my space this is their home, this is their space.
12.
Quote: H*ll, if I didn't wear one to bed, my hoohahs would hit the floor every time I bent over in my decrepit state I guess I'm not looking forward to getting older! ehh, I guess I'll just let 'em drag...
I say "let 'em drag!!!" I WONT wear one to bed!! she is a cutie....I hope Scott really likes her....
13. excellent article! I especially like the reference to the "Disney Dogs"...no, they're not all Lassie, or 101 Dalmations, or Rin Tin Tin...they all could be, if the owner wanted to put in the effort. But like he says, they dont come that way. and Alas! I do NOT have perfect dogs....Freebee is anal-ballistic, and Laurel is fearful and timid. That's why I have them, so some shelter doesnt. Good job Mr. Katt, for pointing it out. It should be required reading before getting a dog.
14. first of all, call the police. Most people call them when their dogs go missing. If you cant take him, animal control will come get him. If he's been reported missing, his owners will be ecstatic to have him back.
15. negative attentin is still attention. Some dogs (and children) thrive on it. In a sneaky obscure way, they get their way by annoying the hell outta you. at first, it may seem that ignoring it gets you nowhere. but ignore it you must. A stern NO DOWN command can sometime work, because when they go down they will be rewarded. If they dont respond to the down, no reward. ignore it...5 minutes later say NO DOWN again, and go from there. eventually they will learn that annoying you gets them nowhere..but a good down gets treat/affection. I am using this tactic to get my foxhound to STOP waking me up at 4 a.m.....
16. so do mine. walk on me, nuzzle me, sniff me, lick me.... it may be pack behavior of a kind. When the Alpha "gets down" with the rest of the pack they will all nuzzle him and lick him. It makes the pack feel secure, and also makes the alpha out to be a gentle, kindly king. (which they usually are) alpha's will often play with the puppies, in this manner. Our dogs never really reach the stage of full wolf maturity. they kinda hang around in wolf adolesence for their whole lives. so getting a chance to play with the alpha is a big thing for them. :D
17. the bible contradicts itself in a lot of places....I still think God gave us dogs for a purpose. That's just me. After all, it was written by people, not God. And not properly translated, people are starting to find out.... :D
18. If you want an AKC title. or crufts, or any major dog show, it cant be neutered. The reasoning is that if it is show quality, you will want to breed it to make more show quality dogs. I disagree with this entirely. I think there should be dog shows for neutered dogs, mixed breeds, any well trained dog should be able to show. I have seen mutts with better confirmation than some show dogs, in the training department. I firmly believe that dogs put up for show, should also have to prove "trial" skills. Hunting dogs should have to hunt. Herding dogs. herd. Guarding dogs., Guard. They should have to show the skills for what they were bred for, not just their looks.... My foxhound is not "pretty" - her life prior to me was a hunting life, she has abrasions, scars, ripped dew claws... I took her to a dog park this weekend. She OUTRAN every dog there, including my Lab...she is the epitome of a hunting dog. She could chase. corner and nail a fox in a a heartbeat...or any other prey you asked her to hunt. If someone needed a hunter, she could do it. And win. but she will never be a show dog..she's not "pretty"...
19. I think Hillside hit it right on the head! They are now, BOTH, laying on the couch. FREEBEE'S TERRITORY... she grumbled a little when Laurel jumped up, and they are at opposite ends and not "looking" at each other....but sharing the couch. Alex never got to share the couch...if he got there first, he would either warn Freebee off (which she usually ignored) and eventually had to get down....       what a drama!! I should write a book...
20. Oh good. you already checked him out **whew** I just dont like it when my spine tingles..... :D :D
21.
First off, keep in mind that I know nothing about showing, but am a lifelong cynic. The only thing I can suggest before moving on is to do a lot of homework to see if this guy is legit. Check with whatever breed clubs and make sure it's not just a cell number the guy gave you. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I'd hate to think it was some miller or scam artist that flagged you down and gave a really convincing display just to get your dog away from you. I've heard of people doing some strange things and cons are usually at the top of their game and it's their "job" to be convincing. It's probably a legit offer, but Aunty HF just had to raise her little red warning flag just as food for thought.
I'm with Aunty HF....maybe it's just us, but I find it EXTREMELY suspicious that some handler would show up out of the blue and want to show your dog. There are usually fees involved for the handler to train. I dont know...this just makes my spine tingle, not a good sign....I would definitely check with the breeders clubs, the AKC, whoever, get all the info you can on this guy.
22. If you do decide to use a litterbox, take the droppings outside and put them where you want them to go. It will help train them to go outside faster. Also, get scentless litter. I know of a dog that was allergic to the flowery-smelling litter.
23. Scoobie will learn from Alfie with a little help from you. When you whistle for Alfie, call Scoobie at the same time, and treat him. (you should treat Alfie too). Scoobie will probably follow Alfie back. After a while, just whistle for both of them and treat them. after a while Scoobie will catch on. It's easier with another dog showing the ropes. LaureL took most of her cues from Freebee. And now comes back better then Freebee does!!
24. Just to be careful....a few things to check. Is Zebra drinking more than usual? and/or losing weight? and is this unusual or has he always been this way? The reason I ask is that dogs can become diabetics, and the first symptoms are excessive drinking and excessive urination. After a while of this, you will notice him starting to lose weight. If any two of the three fit Zebra, take him to the vet and have blood work done. It's a simple test to determine if he is diabetic or not.
25. Freebee would have to be "Attitude"....she has plenty of it. Laurel would have to be "Velcro"..... PushyCat would remain the same..... :evilbat:
