1. I have never heard anything bad about it, but have never used it either. Also, I buy my pet meds off the net. even with shipping it ends up cheaper than buying them from the vet. welcome to dogo. by the way! :D
2. also (are you sick of me posting yet? :) ) if the dog/person has a shellfish allergy, and you are boiling/steaming shellfish where the "smell" gets into the air, a reaction can also occur. When I made shrimp here I would give my X a benadryl, and then put a fan in the window to pull the moist steam outside the house so it wouldnt affect him. I am allergic to pork, although it only causes hives, so I would make pork for him and my son and I would have shrimp. As long as the steam was directed outside and he had a benadryl, the smell never set off a reaction. As long as I didnt eat any of the pork, I never had one. Creative cooking.... I'd be interested to hear what the vet has to say.... Lobster would have the same affect BTW....
3. I just found this on the web: A food allergy that stimulates the immune system to cause a serious reaction such as: hives, itching or skin eczema swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat, or other parts of the body wheezing, nasal congestion or trouble breathing dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting On the other hand, if you are truly allergic to a food such as: cow's milk eggs peanuts Wheat soybeans fish shellfish tree nuts even a small amount could give you a serious health reaction The above all cause the same reaction - I would be concerned about the eggs....It might be in your best interest to get Hemi allergy-tested... and find out if any of the above are combined with the shots. Good luck!
4. The symptoms you describe are exactly the same as people who are allergic to seafood....My X husband almost died one night after eating Chinese Pork that had shrimp sauce in it. He had to be taken to the hospital. The eyes puff up, the throat closes...etc. Giving Hemi benadryl was probably the best thing you could have done. I did that for the X too, and it kept him breathing til the ambulance got there....The fact that you recognized this as an allergic reation saved your dogs life...Good job!! I would be curious to know if the medicine the dog was given had some form of seafood (shrimp, crab, etc) combined with it. That particular reaction, in people, is usually associated with shellfish....I wonder if dogs can have that allergy too then?
5. thanks everyone!!! :D :D Hey Dog Lover - your sig - is that a Foxhound, or a beagle? It looks like a FH....I remember seeing the story long ago, but dont remember what kind of dog it was... it's definitely a hound of some sort, with those ears....
6. I HAD signs on the front door that said "no soliciting", "no peddlers" etc... I was told by the Town that I needed PERMITS to display them.....The only sign I could display was "Beware of Dog", and it had to be on the front door and on the fence, wherever the dogs could be seen or heard.... however, I took those down because of all the trouble people have had with that particular sign if their dogs seemed mean in any way...not taking the chance on that one...when I asked why I could not display no solicitor signs, they said the solicitors have the right to try to sell their wares..and I didnt have to answer the door, etc...except you cant get to my back door unless you come through a locked fence, so basically, you cant get there at all.... This is a very religious cultured community, we have 4 or 5 different types of churches in this one neighborhood...I dont know if they complained about the no soliciting signs or not....
7.
a dog which gets stressed out is the dog which is spoiled and has no rules...they don't know how to react in situations....
this is very very true!!! The spoiled dogs are actually not as happy as the trained, well behaved ones. "Bad" dogs cause stress for their owners, which they can sense, which stresses them out and makes everyone unhappy. And Lucky is also very correct. A dog properly trained to not eat until told will have a much lesser chance of ever being poisoned by a malicious neighbor, or eat antifreeze, etc... Good Dog! :D
8. Love to you and Ellie!! **Hugs** hope she gets all better soon.... :fadein: Katy
9. giving birth is very painful. It's hard to explain, but I have done it and yes, it hurts. Most dogs dont cry while giving birth however, so I would think that either A, the puppies were too big for her to handle or B. there was something wrong with the birthing process. Most animals dont cry while giving birth, it's too dangerous..it attracts predators. poor thing. I hope she's all better now...
10. OK I obviously dont breed, why is 5 litters in 4 years too much? That's just a tiny bit more than 1 litter per year....is that bad somehow? like I said, I dont breed, I rescue...but dont most breeders throw more than one litter a year? I am not being sarcastic, I'd really like to know.... thanks.
11. I am gone ten hours a day, M-F...my dogs are loose in the house and are fine. On nice days, I come home at lunch and let them out and play with them. They get plenty of exercis in the morning and at night, lots of attention, and weekend fun stuff...Full time jobs usually require 8 hours, and then you have to figure in travel time.... Mine requires 9 hours, because they dont pay you for lunch and wont let you not take your lunch and leave earlier. I'm sure Webby will be fine.

13.

ok, first of all...
I want show quality dogs, BUT I know that not all puppies in the litterbox will become that
crested, THAT cracked me up....I have a cat...a "litterbox" is NOT something you rear puppies in....     (not laughing at you, I just cant stop laughing at "litterbox"...)
Ehem.... That was a rough translation from Finnish... Here we call the "box" where the mummy nurses her pups for a "litterbox". (Litter = puppy litter) Anyway... thanks again.
I AM sorry...I didnt know that. Here, in America, a litterbox is where cats relieve themselves..and it has to be cleaned on a regular basis..and cleaning it is the one thing that most people hate about cats...I didnt mean to offend, if I did... when you said "litterbox" I couldnt help but think, and laugh, about "our" litterboxes..sorry...actually, when I read that, I cleaned mine...it was overdue...
14. I dont see why not...unless it's like a dachsund maybe, with back issues...they can be taught to walk on treadmills after all...
15. just an update on Laurel's progress... she now comes downstairs and sits with Kyle...she's still a little wary of some of his friedns, but they are the large and loud ones. Most of them obey my request to be gentle and quiet around her, so as not to scare her... She has been meeting me at the door every night, something she never did before. I would have to find where she was hiding and coax her out... and Kyle told me tonight that for the last few weeks she has been whining, and pacing when she hears the garage door open and its time for me to come home...then she runs downstairs and meets me at the back door!!! WOO HOO!! FINALLY!!! I honestly beagn to doubt I would EVER get this dog unafraid....I am glad to know I was wrong!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
16. My Lab mix has floppy ears, although they "perk" up a little in the front, and you can see partially inside. My foxhound's ears are long, flat and lay flat against her head. The lab has never had an ear infection, Foxhounds get them all the time I am told....Is the fact that Freebee's ear are a little "open" (allowing air to get inside) why she doesnt get ear infections? Maybe I'll pin Laurel's ears up til they heal... :D :D
17. awwwww....I like Bosco! what a face!
18. :o You guys are making fun of me!!!! :) I'm not a vet, I dont know all the technical terms...to me, they're knees...
19. ok, first of all...
I want show quality dogs, BUT I know that not all puppies in the litterbox will become that
crested, THAT cracked me up....I have a cat...a "litterbox" is NOT something you rear puppies in....     (not laughing at you, I just cant stop laughing at "litterbox"...) but to all the other comments...what kind of dog you choose to get is up to you. Some people want purebred's, because they feel they know what they will be getting. That's fine. You want a pet, you have the right to choose what kind of pet you get. I only wish MORE people would research the "kind of pet" before getting one. I have rescue dogs (cat, too) and I will ALWAYS choose that option because I feel for all the dogs who get dumped because they didnt turn out to be exactly what the owner wanted. Crested wants to breed Bella, and she is willing to do all the work necessary to insure, as best as possible, that the dogs are healthy and free from genetic defects. What more could you ask from a breeder? Whether her pups end up as champions is really irrelevant. If they are healthy, and she can find them good homes as pets, she has not failed. I understand both sides of this story. I have one rescue mix, and one purebred. The purebred is a rescue as well. If not for the rescue society, she would have been put down after her "usefulness" to the hunt club had expired...I adopted her at 6 years old. There is nothing physically wrong with her, except she is too old to hunt....they would put her down for that...and I have issues with that. If Crested wants to breed, and does the best she can to assure that her puppies get good homes, whether they be show or pet quality, she is a good breeder. I will always rescue, that is my personal charter. But I dont have a problem with people who want purebreds. All I care about is that they all get good homes. This issue would be less intense if there was some method of deciding if adopters/buyers could handle the dog they adopted/bought. THAT'S the biggest issue, IMO...
20. :D :D thanks!! I have never heard that term before, although I do know what knees are...
21. foxhounds fall into that category as well....mines ears are infected now. However, in a scent hound they use the floppy ears to direct the scent to the nose, so no cropping....her tail has issues too, because it is long and spindly and wags at 100 miles an hour...so it get injured.
22. I'm glad she was able to help the old lady. however, what is a "stiffle"?
23. mine too!! those smiley faces and wigglebums always bring a smile to my face as well...
24. I agree. My beliefs are my own, however, I want you Peng to understand that my irritation was not with the JW's themselves...they have the same right to believe what they want...but with the noise that their door-to-door visits cause in a neighborhood like this. I only object to the few that will not take "sorry I'm not interested" as a reply and insist on talking over me. So as I said, if I unintentionally insulted you, I apologize.
25. OK a couple of things... first, I appreciate your asking me. It makes me feel like you trust my judgement, and I do appreciate that. Personally, it depends a great deal on what you want. If you want show-quality dogs, I wouldnt breed her until she has at least 2 wins under her belt. If you are breeding pet quality it doesnt really matter, but I am gathering you want "best of breed" puppies...your plans for treating her, breeding her and your health and welfare concerns are better than most breeders have. You obviously care, and you obviously intend to do the best for your pups. That is NOT BYB... If you do the health, DNA and hips/ears/ etc health checks, and she passes, then you need to decide. Do you want to breed potential show winners, or pets? You will end up with both in any litter. You MUST keep the gene pool diverse, and importing is a good idea. I know that some breeders inbreed for a certain look, line and color, but I have a scientists background and can ASSURE you it will only harm the breed to do that. You can only rein in the gene pool so far before you start causing problems you didnt anticipate. all in all - your plan is a good one. You are conscientious about what you want to do, and are willing to make sure the health and welfare of the puppies come first.....under no circumstances would I call that BYB, even if all you want to do is breed purebred, well groomed, healthy house pets. We all have to start somewhere...you are starting with most of the necessary knowlege in place. I know some people said you are BYBing, but I dont agree. They are talking from show quality dogs that have breeders who are known and established...they all started somewhere too. Best of luck to you. If I can help you in any way feel free to ask. You WILL make mistakes Crested, we all do. Just learn from them, and you'll be doing your dogs a good service.
