might I ask what a vet would tell you that would prevent a rescue from being adopted? I got turned down a few times after Alex died, and I'm wondering if it's because of somethign the vet said...

WOO HOO!!!! You're welcome!! :D
It's my understanding that your supposed to try and pull the dish away when they're eating and pet them with it.....not poke and prod them till they finally do snap !!
that's exactly what they are supposed to do, not prod the dog into aggressiveness...I;m surprised the Humane Society hasnt gotten on her ass yet.....she must know somebody important.

I got addicted to dogs, when I realized, with Taurus, that they give all of themselves, to US....Taurus was a Golden, loved me completely, and gave all of himself to me...always..I never had a bad day when he wouldnt put his head in my lap, sigh, and hope things got better soon.. :D
I tend to agree but you have to be realistic. Some people want a purebred dog for a number of reasons.
and I will go with that. Personally, I prefer to rescue, mutts. mixed breeds, heinz 57, I dont care. Thats a personal choice, and no one has the right to say that my choice is better than someone who wants a purebred dog. I have had both. People who dont know dogs, dont know how to train, tend to want a purebred because the AKC says this is what their personality will be. Most of the purebred rescues are because that statement is basically untrue. You CANT determine a dogs personality by breed, not 100%. No more than you can say a certain race of people is more prone to some actions than others. It all depends on the upbringing, the environment, the non-adjustable factors of individuals. Dogs are JUST as individual as people, each one needds to be treated, and raised, differently. I have a Lab mix..the PERFECT dog..likes children, obeys well, loyal, loving, etc......NOT!!! she DOES NOT like small children, they send her into a self protective frenzy. She DOES NOT like strangers, and wont allow them to touch her or come close..She does NOT LIKE ANYONE SHE DOESNT KNOW..she's a GREAT guard dog, but NOT typical of a Lab... but the AKC will tell you that Labs are "great dogs with everyone"... Her crossbreed is a German Shorthair Pointer, also supposed to be good with everyone.. SHE ISNT... you have to take each dog as an individual, not by AKC, or anyone elses standards....

Been gone soooo long....... now a loooooong post
courtnek replied to science_doc's topic in Everything about dogs
welcome back Science. This was actually heavily discussed in the debate forum. Bottom line, Huskies are "independent thinkers", the same traits they look for in guide dogs. It's called Intelligent disobedience. Out on the Tundra, this dog may have to decide to disobey the owner/musher, so that the whole team will not fall into an unsafe crevasse.. Good on the tundra, not good in a recall situation. Unfortunately, this is not a dog you will likely ever be able to trust offleash without EXTENSIVE recall training, and even then the dog may decide not to come back, for whatever reason it sees fit. The Husky breeders will tell you the same thing. My hunting dogs, both of them, are the same way. It is bcause of the intelligence bred into them, to make decisions on their own without your input, that they become bad on recall. Independence does not sit well with recall, and these dogs want to investigate every sight, smell and sound...in most situations, the dog will come back on it's own,. once it has figured out what that interesting smell/sight/sound was...they are very good dogs once you accept the fact that recall is not something they normally take to. Also, Huskies are not real "bonding"...they pretty much like everyone equally... -
I don't understand how a plastic or rubber hand is supposed to pass off for a real hand.
It's not intended to be. The purpose of the plastic hand is for the testers to see if they can remove food while the dog is eating, without getting bitten. A food aggressive dog would bite at a real hand as well, and they dont want to risk that. It's purpose is NOT to antagonize the poor dog into aggressiveness by continual poking, prodding and annoying while they're trying to eat. My dogs will let me remove their food, with my hands, but I think if I acted like this bitch and kept aggravating them, Freebee at least would snap. She probably wouldnt bite, but she would show teeth and do the bark/snap thing when she is warning a person or the other dog off. I trained her to NOT BITE..she was a puppy nipper and it took a lot of work. Most dogs can bite 5 times faster than you can move your hand. You can see that speed in Freebee when she's ticked. She will growl, and snap/bite, and her teeth are gnashing a mile a minute. While she never connects (at least not with me) it's a definite warning (she growl/snaps at Laurel all the time, altho has never bitten her). This stupid cow antagonizes the poor dogs into snapping, and then says "put 'em down!!" Freebee does not snap/bite at me, no matter what I do, but I have seen her do it to Laurel, and Alex, my old dog, and I know that if she wanted to, she could remove several fingers from my hand. With trainig, she now sees me as dominant Alpha, and that's all most of those dogs needed.

I would think worms, and bones are your biggest threat. My lab mix kills things in the yard all the time, birds, squirrels, mice and has never gotten sick, however, I usually get them before she consumes them. If you're worried ask the vet. They will ahve a better answer.

we begged my mom and dad for years to get us a dog. finally, my dad broke down and brought Taurus - purebred Golden, and he was probably the best dog I ever had. After having him, I couldnt live without them.
-
I too grew up on Lassie...and even as a kid, always wondered "how the hell does Timmy get in so much trouble...good thing he has this dog!!" My parents were overprotective, and wouldnt think of a dog until I was 13 and we finally got a big enough house. My first was a Golden... I thought the fact that your dad named him Laddie was cute, and appropriate. Altho Lassie was supposed to be a female, all the Lassie dogs were male... :D

Mei Mei - you ended up with and understanding and caring police officer - not all are...GOOD FOR HIM and his ability to see past the "regular"...

OK I have heard and read about this woman...I dont get HBO so I couldnt see the news story, but after seeing that website, and reading all of the things about her, I no longer want to Euthanize her...I want to put a bullet in each of her knees.. so she can no longer run a "shelter"....she has brought out the long dormant anger and viciousness in me... :evilbat:
I have put some antifungal cream on her bum a little now and then and sometimes it gets better and sometimes worse. It often starts to get better and then she starts biting it and there's nothing I can cover it with as it's in a place that's very hard to cover with anything.
the problem with fungal infections is that they ITCH...really bad. I have had athletes foot, and the itching is simply unbearable. You want to just rip the spot to shreds because no matter what you do, it wont stop itching. You need to put her on an anti-fungal medication and keep her on it for AT LEAST 14 days, three or four times a day, until the fungus is finally killed and GONE. She may be biting at it because the treatements are not enough to stop the god-awful itching. It's like 100 times worse than a mosquito bite..

hey guys this is actually two different posts...they look to be from two different people...at least the "names" are....

I WANNA GO!!!! well, except, neither of my dogs do anything extraordinary except when no one else is around to see it..... and then of course I cant prove it.... :D
-
it may be partially torn inside the paw...broken nails high up near the blood vessels and nerves are VERY painful...(having torn my own nails a time or two I know) I always do it to my toenails....does the vet know about the fungal infection? maybe K's idea is a good one. I looked at the website, the cream looks good...fungals are damn hard and take a long time to get rid of (like athlete's foot, same premise...) hope Bella is A-OK real soon!!
smarter than the average dog
I might've said "smarter than the average person..." I leave my damn phone all over the place, MY dogs never remind me that I left it....

Meg is definitely gifted with "intelligent disobedience"....that's three times now she has deliberately disobeyed you to prevent tragedy, theft and loss. She would have made an excellent service/guide dog...those are the qualities they look for, especially in a Seeing Eye dog guiding the blind... GOOD GIRL MEG!!!
That's cool! Aww why was the Lab called the Lesser Newfoundland
Lab's are actually a mix between the original Newfie (Greater) and another water dog, believed to have been imported from Labrador. The fishermen wanted a smaller, kighter dog to haul nets to hsore and then swim back out to the boats. I beleive they were called "Lesser" because they are a spin off of the Newfie, but much smaller.

hehehehehe DON'T tempt me..... :evilbat:

I have read and hear about her many times. Personally, I feel SHE needs to euthanized.... I wonder how she would react if she was eating and I kept jabbing a stick in her side? :evilbat:
