he's a little off the deep end.... dogs sniff, that's what they do. That's how they communicate with each other - sniffing and marking. If you tell him enough and he gives it up, he's fine. This guy reminds me of people who, when stopped for directions, give yu some even though they have no clue where you're trying to go. Some people just have to think they know everything....

both of mine manage to find every slightly less grassy area, and come in with mud all over them...7/8 of the yard is grassy, they always find the 1/8th that isnt... :o

IAMS - NOT as good as they say it is...
courtnek replied to courtnek's topic in Everything about dogs
well, I stand by my post. I am a single. work full time mom. On top of that, my son and myself are diabetics...junk food is OUT.. I try my best to cook the best food I can, for my son and myself. I use the dog foods that show the best results..health, coat, stools. Purina has provided that. Some people may disagree, but Purina has given me dogs that live to 12 and 13 years old...without issues....large dogs, all of them. I often add the food I make for my son and myself into their dinners. Its' home cooked, not fast food. maybe that helps, I dont know. But a little "extra" in their dinner, by my cooking, has never hurt them. -
Thoughts for Razzle and my friend

positive thoughts and vibes for Razzle...I TRULY hope he wil be ok... :( :( :( :( -
I think you're right. She laid low, had me feeling sorry for her, playing up to her, and now she has Freebee doing her bidding...pack rules, and damn, I MISSED it. Did NOT see it coming. She really IS smarter than I gave her credit for... I gotta say GOOD FOR HER...I missed it, so it's not surprising "Freebee-miss-full-of-herself" missed it too...

IAMS - NOT as good as they say it is...
courtnek replied to courtnek's topic in Everything about dogs
would that not be true of most commercial dog foods? It's true to an extent in most people foods....or is Iams different, worse then most? Most of the fast food people buy is somewhat bad for them..but you cant expect people to create special diets for themselves or their pets..there's still real life to deal with... -
as far as Omega, she just SNAPPED AT FREBEE..Freebee was trying toi steal her bone.....I think I have some dominance training to do. I have never seen Freebee back down, to ANY dog....Laurel may end up top of the pile. I'll let them work it out, since it's not dangerous....and Freebee is willing to give...I AM amazed... maybe Laurel is smarter than I gave her credit for...laid back, then took over...serves Freebee right. She's such a bitch most of the time, with other dogs.

You all know my Foxhound came to me scared, untrained, and basically inept. I have given her some special privledges to get her over her fear... I let her sleep on my bed, to raise her Omega rank a little..she now gripes after she's taken over and I make her move...she gets fed twice a day (same as Freebee) but she will go out in the kitchen and look "starved" to get more food (she is no longer too thin), she wakes me up at 4:30 to go out...which I am putting a stop to. I think I'm being taken advantage of....hmmm. do you all agree? she is very lively, friendly and happy....and SPOILED...LOL I may have to do some reverse training to break the bad habits...hmmm. seems I cant win.... I am glad she is happy...however, I want to be happy again...

you didnt say what kind of dog, but hounds, and dogs with high prey drive, are often not safe around cats and small animals unless they have been brought up with them. Hounds are bredto chase, and kill, prey. Terriers as well, and dogs with a high prey drive who are not accustomed to the cat will find its running as a prey chase. If the four month old started it, he may have entied the other dog into the chase...what kinds of dogs are these please? If a four month old puppy has that kind of prey drive, it needs obedience training NOW.... not tomorrow, NOW....or it will kill neighbors cats and squirrels and other small animals...
except for the fact that a 10-day trial isn't going to prove much. even the 6-month trials that are one option of AAFCO certification aren't really enough. what if the food gives your dog a shiny coat in 10 days or 2 weeks, but after eating the food for 3-6 months the kidneys are stressed into failure?
I would agree with this if this was a brand new food on the market, but it isnt. Purina One has been around a long time, I have been feeding to my dogs for years, and happy with the outcome. Like I said, this is a sales pitch on their part...the food has been tested and proven to be not harmful, now they want to get people to try it and see if they like the results. For a clinical test, is the food going to cause harm? then no, it would have to be more controlled. but Iams has been around a long time too, they could have used a test like this for food compatability only. Like SD said, they were trying to make medical-type claims. A sick dog should see a vet, not change his food...

IAMS - NOT as good as they say it is...
courtnek replied to courtnek's topic in Everything about dogs
ok first, T&J, I was not knocking the fact that some people have good success with Iams...I have a problem with their testing practices, but I feed Iams to my cat because its all he can keep down, so I have no issues with you (or anyone else) feeding Iams. While I dont like the things that have been found about their testing, I'm not gonna let my cat die because of it. Second...WHAT long term affects? this is really news to me.... :o -
I feed my dogs Purina Lamb and Rice...and have had excellent results with it. I know some people dont like Purina, but to each his own. A friend at work gave me a 20 lb. bag of Iams, her dog couldnt eat it. I thought "I have issues with IAMS, this will last a week, lets see what happens..." Freebe showed no bad affects at all...Laurel, however, had to get up every day to go at 4:30 a.m., which she never did on Purina, had accidents in the house. and was more hyper than usual...She needed much more trips outside than usual, and seemed less happy after feeding. I realize it was only a week, but the change in her behavior was amazing. I put her back on Purina, and she's back to normal. AFTER TWO DAYS!!! Freebee is a mix, mutt, whatever. I personally believe they are less prone to feeding issues than purebreds. Laurel is a purebred. She couldnt handle IAMS, and I will never do that to her again, even if it IS free... I feel like a bad mom..I tested this food, and she suffered...I am against IAMS anyway because of testing, but it was FREE...serves me right... I feel so bad....

Not if you have to confront a seller who's been busted for a mil in drugs.... I'm not putting down your choice by any means, but Shara, could you shoot somebody? to kill? It could be required....then maybe it's different in Canada.....here, you would have to learn to use a gun, and use it if necessary. . unfortunately, there's a lot more to narcotic tracking then baggage in airports and border security.... Just make sure you know what you're getting in to.... :fadein:
why can't they test by giveing a thousand owners the food for free monitoring the dogs haveing a normal life with their owners not doing any grusum tests at all
Purina One is actually doing this. They are giving away Purina One Dog food, and asking people to feed it to their dogs for 10 days, then see if they like the results. They are accomplishing the same things, do the dogs get better, do their coats shine, are their stools firm, etc.... It's a sales pitch, of course, but if the owner likes the way the dog looks/behaves he will buy the product. If not, he wont. It's a justifiable and humane test.

Temperament Testing, It's Not Always What You Think.....
courtnek replied to Lokipups's topic in Everything about dogs
"Killing animals on the basis of a temperament test is such a horrendous crime that those who do it have to become hardened in their defense of the theory in order to justify their crime. Sue Sternberg is a lousy trainer who justifies her inability by labeling her students as dangerous and uneducable
I have been reading up on this. The tests themselves, as I thought originally, are good for judging what area's of the dogs behavior need improvement or modification...the example of the "men wearing hats" is a good one. That can be "psyched out" of a dog with time and patience. or you can avoid wearing hats around the dog. Either way, it's not a reason to put the dog down. What I did NOT know, and Loki pointed out, (thank you!) was that it's not just Sue Sternberg who is writing their own rules. Other shelters and humane socieities are following them as badly as she does. Reading up on Sue is worth your time....She is simply EVIL.. all she wants is to make a name for herslf and have her mug in the news. She disregards the outcome of her own tests!!! and decides, on a whim in my opinion, which dogs stay and which dogs go... She apparently doeesnt take into consideration the noise, fear and stench of the testing centers, the trauma of the dog, or the real results of the test. I dont believe the dog should be tested at all until it is less traumatized and more comfortable. There are ways to calm them before the tests, so they arent so scared..... What really pisses me off...according to her rules, my Foxhound should have been put down. She is afraid of, and barks at, men, including my son. I have had her about 6 months...Only now is she starting to chill out a little and come down and "commune" with my son. She still barks and startles at loud noises, like slamming doors, but she is 100% better in my opinion. It's taken me half a year to get here, but we are getting here, and the love she has given back makes it worth it. But Sue would have put her down, probably my Lab mix too, cuz she doesnt like small kids, or strangers.... If I sound angry, it's because I AM....this woman should not be allowed to make decisions for animals, or anything else. She's only in it for her....
-
Ahhh... ONE...one year closer to sanity (with Labs. at least...they're not full grown until 2...) HAPPY BIRTHDAY COAL!!!!

My pit barks and growls at children! What should I do?
courtnek replied to a topic in Everything about dogs
good advice everyone!! children often upset dogs..they are not Alpha, but they are not submissive either...this confuses them. They become unsure of how to react because the body language is all wrong. They jump, screech in high tones, and flail their arms, which some dogs see as puppy behavior, yet they dont submit...the running and arm-glailing especially upsets some dogs...it confuses them completely. as was mentioned, careful introduction, where the dog learns that the kids are allowed and must be respected, is your best bet. Dogs have been chasing bicycles forever...I dont know if they see it as the child running and sets off the chase instinct, or if they just dont like the bikes. Again, careful introduction to a child on a bike or skateboard will probably do the trick. -
**sniff sniff** that made me tear up - BEATIFUL!! from the mouths of babes...

Loki, what about the ASPCA tests upsets you? This is new territory for me, and I am very curious...How is it bad?
