****BIG HUG!**** there ya go Ellie... I HATE being so suspicious....I prefer to treat people kindly.... but I also HATE people who take advantage of that kindness... it's a two-edged sword... :drinking: :drinking: :drinking:

ok please try to understand..we have had a number of "guests" lately who's posting appeared to disable our site....so we're kinda suspicious.... If you wish to join us, and talk with us, we are glad to have you. But most of us have been burned by the "bad" guests. So if you have something to say, feel free to do so, and I apologize if we seemed a little hostile.. 8)

I'm thinking our recent "guests" may be the same person. The moderators can check the IP's but be aware that you can post as a guest from any terminal so they may not be the same... WHY do people just want to cause trouble? GET A JOB!!! FIND something to DO with your life...other than mess up other people's..
Oh Courtnek how can you be so sensible............I'm barely holding my bladder together
me too ( I have tears in my eyes after looking at those pics) but I have acquired a reputation of "feeling peoples pain" (did I ask for this? NO...) so if he/she had a real issue, I wanted them to know we would listen... I WILL come to this thread when I need to laugh though...

thanks for that. there is good scientific evidence that in these situations, people compound the fear and make it worse. You can hug, hold and solace a frightened child and he will understand that. The worst thing you can do is "solace" a frightened dog. Your telling him "it's ok, dont worry" actually makes him think his reaction to the stimuli is correct..after all, you just "praised" him, by consoling him. This is one of the ways we inadvertently teach bad things to our dogs...they dont understand English, only tone of voice, and a pleasant tone of voice to them makes them think they just did a "good thing!"

I really liked the Arnold one, for Spam, but cant post it... Me, was there something else you wanted to say? Most people dont drop into a dog forum and just say "hi"....I know we are all cracking up over it, but seriously, do you have an issue you need help with? If so, come back and ask. Honestly, we dont bite....not hard, at least... :D

She'll be OK guest, but a hint of warning....GSD's are extremely intelligent, and can be manipulative. Their intelligence is well known to most people, guard dogs, K9 forces, military...they can be too smart for YOUR own good...If you treat her excessively everytime she doesnt want to do something (like paw the box) she WILL use that against you. They are that intelligent. She may "devise" ways to get you to treat her because she's not responding properly.....I;m NOT kidding, I had to break a GSD of this habit because she was gaining so much weight being treated for every little thing....In her case, until she settles down some, (and she will as she matures) it might be better to treat her with praise and a game instead of food. Food is a prime motivator with dogs. It may take a while to break her of the habit, and may take longer to get her to achieve without food, but in the long run it works in your favor. I read once that dogs have the average intelligence level of a three year old...and having a son, I can tell you honestly that that is the stage where manipulation is the way they are....

Cassie is right...... let me make a few suggestions. Perhaps your pup has been relying on your Lab to do all the "social" graces...like you said, the Lab would slobber all over visitors, while the GSD hung by your side and stayed out of it. GSD's are natural Guard Dogs....they are one-person dogs, Labs generally like everyone. So having the Lab around precluded her from having to be a social butterfly, she could concentrate on protecting you. Now that she's out alone, with no Lab to respond to people, she may feel uncertain and unsure how to respond. Your best bet is what Cassie said, get her socialzed to strangers on the street. Let her know that she can be accepting of people, if you say it's ok.... she will not lose her guarding traits, they are bred in...but it will make training easier if she understands that most people are ok....and wil also make her guarding instincts stronger, should you ever need them. Your response is all important. If she feels YOU are ok with it, she will calm down and be ok with it. :) p.s. My Lab mix would be a piss-poor "socializer"...she doesnt like strangers...

"cognizance" comes to mind too...
I'm doing my thesis results (just for a change) and am trying to think of a collective term that will include: stability with startle stimuli, dominance acceptance, playfulness and interest in problem solving test. The obvious that I am thinking of is curiosity but that wouldn't feature as being a component of dominance acceptance really.
"acceptance" comes to mind. accepting the startle, the dominance, and the test itself...

I noticed that you left out everything I said, so I'll say it all again. I dont think anyone here would actually let someone die, to save an animal...but we are people, and we vent, when angry, against other people who harm animals. This is a DOG FORUM...we love our animals, yes. We take as best care of them as we can, being as we understand that WE bred them to do our will, and that deserves love, care, respect and DECENT treatment in return...If you really read the posts. you would understand that there is a vendetta going on against Pit Bulls, against Rotts, against Dobies, BECAUSE THE MEDIA SAYS THERE SHOULD BE. Yes, badly bred and int he wrong hands, these dogs can be trouble. Our mission has always been to teach, to make people see, and learn. And yes, like every one else, we become frustrated when all of our good works are spoiled by ONE IDIOT OWNER who's dog hurts a child....and by the media who believes that because SOME dogs are bad, ALL DOGS OF THAT BREED ARE BAD...I dont see them saying ALL Black. Oriental. Hindu, Moslem, Mexicans and White Trash are BAD. That would be politically incorrect. Yet ALL Put Bulls are bad, because some, ill trained, ill bred and ill treated have caused harm? Yes, we need to protect people too, but God (and if you dont believe in God, I really dont care....I DO) gave us the job of being "master over all creatures on Earth"...Master does not mean cruelty, abuse and neglect. It means we treat our creatures witht he respect they deserve. God gave us dogs, to lead us, to help us, to guide us. Why else, in the grand scheme of things, would dogs be the ones chosen to lead the blind, help the deaf, open the cabinets and answer the door? Why would he put a creature here who would dedicate his entire life to being OUR COMPANION? Unless, in his wisdom, he designed this animal to be our friend, our companion, our helper, and our protector? Why allow wolves to join us at all, if not for a purpose more than we are currently aware of? Yes, we domesticated them. However, they CHOSE to be domesticated. It's a two way street. you do for me, I'll do for you... If they didnt want to live with us, grace us with their presence, love us and serve and protect us, why did they JOIN us in the first place? and THAT'S documented....they could have left as soon as they were fed. They CHOSE to stay...

welcome anna, to Dogo. Glad to have you here. Yes, we love our pets, and yes, we try to help each other and others whenever possible. The post you refer to, I believe, was made by the "troll" that we also suspect may have done some damage to our site. welcome aboard. Expect to see some disagreements, some outright anger and a lot of soul. 8)

Final summary of results from my thesis
courtnek replied to imported_Kat's topic in Everything about dogs
well, if you ever get the chance to do hunting dogs, I'd be interested in the turnout. I have two, one purebred, one mix, (although both parts are hunting breeds) and from completely different experiences. The mix I got as a puppy. The purebred was field trialed, raised in a kennel, with little human intervention....quite a diversity... -

I am curious Kat, were hunting dogs included int he study? And if so, how did they fare? -
well, maybe not...here the K9 patrol vehicles are ONLY supposed to transport the canine dogs...so maybe he was sneaking them in because he wasnt supposed to be using his work vehicle for his wife's dogs...

Divine is right. The overall size of the dog is designed by genetics...if it really was the runt it would still be the runt...overfeeding would just make it a fat runt.... stupid people.....

   guilty as charged...at work everyone is supposed to introduce a topic for trivia, mine is usually about dogs....I stumped them all on where Labs originated....and now I get email all the time asking dog questions.... My favorite one (that started a rant) was "I dont really like dogs but I want one for protection...what kind should I get?" My response was "Get an ADT"....she asked what kind was that, and I replied "It's an electronic house burglary system...for you, much better than a dog...you dont have to do anything but turn it on..." She's still not talking to me.... :evilbat: :evilbat:

"hear himself bark"? "selective deafness"? He's DEAF you moron.....he cant hear ANYTHING.... My ex suffered from "selective hearing"...but only cuz he wanted to... My son inherited that trait too.... I wonder though, can he feel bass? most deaf people can,I wonder if dogs can too (bass, like the instrument, not the fish... )

Here in Illinois only assistance dogs are allowed into stores, banks, etc...in a real pinch you can occaisionally get one into the hospital, if the doctor thinks the dog will help whoever you are visiting... There are quite a few petstores around that let you bring your dogs and cats in, on leashes or held...and I think, although I've never done it, that you can bring them on trains, although not busses.... There are dog parks as well, but I cant trust Freebee offleash, so we dont go there.

I board Freebee professionally. the kennel is very good they play with the dogs, adn although expensive, she alawys comes out fine. Laurel I will take back to her foster, she offered me that, because she is too scared to be boarded. I have to go on a week long business trip every year, and taking them with is not an option.
