Wisconsin Police Officer Saves Dog From Icy Death
Carolk9s replied to Carolk9s's topic in Everything about dogs
Hey mcbobbin, way to go to your dad! What he did is awesome! -
Knowing that a Collie is a recreational barker wouldn't it be wiser to GET ANOTHER BREED OF DOG rather than de-barking it? :o
Yes indeedy it would be quite wise! Now how many people, especially first time dog owners rely on WISDOM? Unfortunately, not very many! I want a Lassie dog! I wanna I wanna! Then they discover that their dog aint a danged thing like Lassie on tv, do they think the dog brushed itself? Haha! When I was 14 and my aunt gave me Dawna, I had NO idea the danged dog would bark at the clouds passing over! My aunt raised and showed shelties, SHE failed to mention that little tidbit. I still catch Jesse sometimes standing down back just barking, it seems at nothing. Would never have my dogs debarked though.

Do you have an all breed kennel club in SC? I would imagine you do. Give them a call, they may be able to refer you to a SC breeder of Chinese Cresteds. Oh heck, here is a link to the Directory of South Carolina Dog Clubs etc http://www.barkbytes.com/sclubs/scclub.htm

Just a little payback for the neutering visit? 8) Just kidding!
-
So did you feel a mixture of sympathy and disgust or just one of those two emotions? 8) SO glad to hear Dusty has a new home lined up, where IS that saluting emoticon when we need it! Hats off to you Gigi, ya done good!
Oh no. Of course not. Their vet said in bigger dogs it's hard to tell if they are pregnant........
Now THERE'S a vet I would trust to treat MY dog! :evilbat:
-
Was she ever taken to the vet? To verify if she was preggers?

If you're interested, you can definitely save money using healthypets.com I have used them before and always happy with the service, speed of shipping, and their willingness to make it right if a mistake occurred. I once ordered a 5 lb bag of Missing Link Plus. They mistakenly sent me a 1 lb bag. I went online and talked to a customer service rep. Asked if they would send me the remaining 4 lbs in 1 lb bags or what? She said it was our mistake, I will get the 5 lb bag out to you tonight and don't worry about the 1 lb it won't be charged to you. I was pleased with that response. No, I am not affiliated with them in any way! On the BELG-L list, we frequently have 'who knows the cheapest and/or best info for ???' discussions.

Newfiemom, does foster & smith offer the 6 packs or just the 3?
-
I have gotten my last two orders of Frontline from KV Vet Supply, they were the cheapest. Went to their site just now, seems they no longer have it! AARRGGHH! Did not charge extra for shipping on that either. I also checked http://www.healthypets.com Right now, the 6 pack for dogs 45-88 lbs is $42.85. The 6 pack for dogs 23-44 lbs is $40.85. They have a flat rate shipping of $3.50 unless your order is over $100, then no shipping fee. This is in the U.S. so not sure who it might be helpful to.

You can, if needed, sterilize stainless steel by boiling. You can get it cleaner with normal hot soapy water too as plastic tends to develop little pits after a while. Jesse BSD has a plastic bowl because he refused to eat out of a metal one years ago. He had two front teeth, one upper and one lower, the stuck out enough to hit on the bowl when he ate. It freaked him out. Now that's he's lost those two teeth, he might eat from a metal bowl, I'm not sure.
So I guess there was no point to this whole thread? In the first post you asked "Does someome know where I can find an excellent GSD in Australia". And now you say 'I already know where to find really excellent GSD".
Yep, I'm confused! Does she or doesn't she, only her alter ego knows for sure!

When Jesse was 16 months old, I took him to a local park. It was late January, 1993. Very cold out and there were minimal people at the park so I took him off leash. He gamboled about enjoying himself immensely. Near the back of the park was a small pond. Before I could react, he ran out the short dock and onto the ice. As he tried to turn and come back, he fell and punched through the thin ice. He could not pull himself up. I was terrified. No one else was within sighting distance. He was not that far out, just a matter of a few feet. Thankfully I was able to kneel down on the step of the dock which was level with the water/ice. I used my forearm to beat at the ice, thankfully it was thin enough to break. Finally, he was able to make his way close enough in order for me to haul him out. HE thought it was great fun at that point, I had to chase him back off the dock. He was soaking wet, it was VERY cold, I rushed him home and dried him off. We had quite a hike to get back to the car, ran the heater full blast on the way home. I was VERY glad I did not have to plunge in myself but you can be sure I would have. An added element, I had had back surgery two months prior to this, had disc L5 removed as it had herniated. I think I was far more stiff and sore than he was! It's like looking back at REALLY stupid things you might have done as a teenager, you wonder how the heck did you ever survive! -

Also, mom or no mom, I would have gone in after my danged dog! I would have tried to do so with some caution but I would have gone after my dog! -
My local paper has a photo, I found the story online but there's no photo! Here's the link to the story http://www.journaltimes.com/articles/2003/01/08/headlines/news.txt The photo shows this guy stretched out with a catch pole, he helped the dog out of the icy water. The cop was NOT wearing any protective clothing, just his normal police uniform, did not even have gloves on. He's on the ice himself, this is the kind of thing that warms my heart. Bless this man, Vic Cera

And I thought it was just fairy magic! 8) Thanks for the info Jacsmom!

Candy has snow nose. It has lightened up quite a bit from the summer.

Well, in my experience collies can bark all danged day at nothing at all, same goes for shelties. HOWEVER, I personally feel debarking a dog is for the most part a senseless operation. While it does, if done properly, greatly reduce the loudness of the barking, many dogs will continue to 'ack ack ack', a rather nasty sound that still grates on ones nerves. Of course the people on the next street won't here it anymore. I agree that training the dog is the better option, of course some will go to anti bark collars that may either give the dog a little shock or perhaps a spritz of an annoying scent when they bark. Years and years ago my aunt had a sheltie of her debarked. Once he was healed, and it didnt take long, he resumed his nonstop vocalizations, just the volume was reduced, not the frequency. I had a sheltie, she would sit in the middle of the back yard and bark at every passing leaf but I never considered having her debarked, just told her to shut up and brought her inside.

Thank goodness Sasha, no telling where this was heading!

Gigi needs a bigger shovel! Getting VERY deep!
-
You're embarrassed? I thought it was going to be a picture of pizzle.

Are there any? I've never seen one with a Belgian either. Most commercials use either Labs, Goldens, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Jack Russell Terriers, Border Collies, Chihuahuas, Bulldogs and I'm sure few I've forgotten.
-
Well I was thinking I might be jealous but instead I am mystified. What is it? Huh? What it is? I can't see!
-
Thats sounds great, wish all the best for Tyr and his (possible) new family.

Hm, how about going to a public payphone and making an anonymous call to AC? Write yourself a little script up beforehand so you don't forget what you want to say or get sidetracked. Tell them you WILL NOT give your name. If they want to know why either say you are concerned about retaliation from the neighbor or just that you choose not too. Tell AC you live in the area, this dog roams about and terrorizes dogs and people alike. Give a good description of the dog along with the owners address. Tell them you are afraid of retaliation by the dogs owner. Tell them they must either pick up this dog or 'someone' in the neighborhood will most likely kill it. If nothing happens, call them again the next day. And the next.
