1. I presume this is directed at Hobbit?
You aare the kind of person that says"It is all in how you raise them" Or "pitbulls will be fine at dog parks" Or lets "let all animals run loose throughout the neigborhood because it is cruel to confine them"You probably think the Iditarod is cruel(Even though the dogs love it)Or weight pulling,Or maybe you think it is cruel to ride a horse because maybe the horse will have back problems later. You probably also advocate not vaccinating puppies and taking them to parks even though un vaccinated. You would probably go to a cockfighting farm(or whatever you call it) and let all those fighting cocks off of their tie outs you would not be able to comprehend that by doing that they will al start mass fighting and killing each other and you alone will be responsible for hte massacre of hundreds of chickens. Anyways Hummaniacs should be outlawed or
Oh your poor foolish misguided person! You will learn just how wrong you are. Perhaps you should take on the mission of reading more of Hobbit's posts to get an actual feel of where he is coming from. You say chaining a dog does NOT increase their aggression, but each time poor Taz did get out, he attacked another dog. While he was still a pup. Plus, the net result of all this is that this dog is dead at age 1. While the desire may have been there, its obvious to me that his owners did NOT do right by him, they failed him.
2. Sorry to hear you hurt your back Newfiemom, hope you feel better soon.
3. Glad to hear Ben is home and improving, hope he continues to do so! Jesse has ossifying spondylosis. It does cause him daily pain, currently he is on Ascripton and Glyco-Flex III. Here are some links for more info: http://www.eudaemonic.net/rvi-cani.htm http://www.spineuniverse.com/displayarticle.php/article143.html?source=overture http://www.spinaldisorders.com/spondylosis.htm
4. Are you all talking about the same thing? Some posts sound like you are speaking of spiked leather collars, i.e. spikes on the outside of the collar and some posts sound like you are speaking of prong collars, prongs on the INSIDE to apply pressure to the dogs neck. Two VERY different collars and issues.
5. BUMPING and HOPING Ben is going to be ok. Does anyone know full symptoms? I can crosspost to BELG-L and see if anyone has ideas there as well.
6.
YOUR IN YOUR IN YOUR IN! Waiting for my Candy kiss!
OK Gigi, press your cheek to your monitor screen, here she is! Isn't the resemblance just amazing? :)
7. I'm not clear as to why you would ask if anyone thinks you are 'mean' for not selling them a pup. As a breeder its your JOB and responsibility to screen homes. This one is a no brainer.
8. OOH! OOH! Can I be included with all you immature morons! PLEASE! I know I haven't posted in this thread yet but please let me in the club! Oh yeah, the first one that says I'm already in.... :D...gets a cyber kiss from Candy! Didn't sandyb write the book 'How To Win Friends And Influence People"? No? Has she read it? NO! I'd hate to be a dog that made a mistake in HER house.
9. Many mornings I will get up just long enough to open the door so they have access to the doggie door and go back to bed for awhile. Soooo glad she had not brought one in earlier for me find...after it thawed too! :x
10. I'm sitting at the table with my first cup of coffee and the newspaper spread out in front of me. Still rubbing the sleep outta my eyes. Dogs are outside. Candy comes in and drops something on the rug and looks at it. I look down, what the heck is that? A piece of wood? Oh no, it's a poopscicle! A big one too. Yuck! Thank dog it was frozen, into the trash it went and trash went out the door. She was quite crestfallen that I took her prize away. No thanks, no doggie kisses for the moment.
11. I said yes because Candy was originally here JUST as a foster. We all know how well the went 8) I will foster again at some point, right now I have a house full.
12. Handsome boy! Glad the only thing the bear got was most of his tail!
13.
It is very obvious. You are never allowed to leave.
Yep, you broke the RULE. Now take your punishment like a good dog. :)
14. As others have said, airlines restrict pets during the summer so if you can take her with you now I would do so. I also agree with Sandyb, I'd stay away from tranqs for Duck. Is Duck tattooed? Not essential but perhaps one more way to identify her should she get loose, pop out of her collar etc. Please don't think this WILL happen, extremely UNLIKELY to but just a suggestion for worst case scenario. 15 hours is a long time but it is also doable. Good luck bring Duck to the U.S.!
15. It is normal. May not be desirable especially when company visits but not 'deviant' behaviour. Neutering may or may not fix this. My sisters stepdaughter had a neutered Chihuahua who loved to hump his toys.
16.
prefare to take Gladis in shops dogs can go in. Have to watch Paddy if another dog has lifted it's leg so will he if I am not watching :)
:) Oh yes I kept one eye on Jesse and a firm grip on the leash, he was not allowed to stray from my side AT ALL! "Hm, why is this video box dripping?" Nope, not gonna happen!
17. There's a trip to Home Depot in the near future! Gonna take my xmas gift card and my dog! 8) Makes sense as I will be buying stuff to make yet another agility obstacle. The itch has been building, it's really too darned cold to work outside much but I really want to put together a crawl tunnel for practice.
18. I disagree that 'many' breeders are not offering ANY type of health guarantee. Perhaps those many are not reputable to begin with. I would not buy from a breeder who did not offer SOME sort of health guarantee against genetic disease that the particular breed is known to present. Any 'breeder' who in effect says your pup is 'as is' is a breeder I do not want to support. Would I take the breeder up on a guarantee? Depends but most likely no. Lets face it, some genetic problems are not going to manifest until the dog is a couple of years old or more. Would I take that dog back to the breeder? Heck no. I'd be far too attached from the first time the puppy licked my face. :) Now perhaps if I brought the pup home, within two to three days pup is at the vets battling parvo? Might be a different situation. I do believe I would at minimum want the breeder to pay the vet costs. Dogs are not things like cars that come with a warranty but they are an investment of your love, time, dedication and expected future together.
19. Home Depot huh? I might try that too!<grin> I do feel the lady with the poodle was wrong not only letting the dog lick the cans but just bringing the dog into a grocery store. Certainly if the dog was a service dog of ANY type, the dog should be allowed in but not licking the cans! Jesse presents quite a different 'look' than a small dog so I was really glad to be able to have him with me at Blockbuster.
20. I went by Blockbuster to rent a movie, had Jesse with so thought I'd see if he could come in with me. No signs saying no dogs allowed on the door. I went in, the clerk greeted me, I asked, "Do you mind if he is with me?" She said 'the dog?' I said, "He's very well behaved", she shrugged her shoulders said ok. I did NOT at any time say he was or represent him as a service dog. She may have assumed he was. Jesse was perfectly behaved, the only bobble came at the register when he started to go round and visit. We had just come from Petsmart and of course THEY give out treats to the dogs. He just wanted another goodie. If anyone had asked if he was a service dog I would have said no. I will have to remember that just because he was allowed in today does not mean he always will. Horsefeathers gave me the idea! Thanks HF! :) I would not have taken Brittany or Candy in, they are both a little less tuned to me than Jesse, Brittany would have been pulling me around and Candy would have been zipping here and there and jumping on people. I've always felt that a trained dog gets to go places, a WELL trained dog gets to go even more places.
21. Black GSD said what I would have said if I was thinking at all clearly today! :D
22. Is he a toy fanantic? A squeaky perhaps? A clicker can do wonders as it tells the dog very quickly that they have done right. If he is a toy driven dog, you can use that to get his attention along with the command. At first, as soon as he looks at your face, throw the toy right away. Gradually increase his 'wait' time. You can also use the clicker, as soon as he looks at you, click and PRAISE. Maybe with the 'right' kind of food he'd change his mind, try something really different from what he usually gets to set the pattern. Maybe some little chunks of boiled chicken? Hotdog? Liver? Cheese? Sometimes it can be puzzling but fun to find out what turns YOUR dog on!
23. Gooey, I'm not at all worried about anyone saying she is a pit mix, I would not even be worried if she WAS a pit mix. Basically just backing up your point about so many dogs being labeled as a pit or pit mix when they may not even be. Sometimes the level of hysteria leveled against pit type dogs is astounding, the dog bit someone therefore it MUST be a pit or a rottie or some other 'killer' dog! A person with very little dog savvy will sometimes go along with the prevailing opinion or that which the media has put out there. I still feel that this policy of the ins. company is ridiculous.
24. Well I do call her gator mouth when she yawns, but seriously it amazes me when the first thing some would say is 'that a pit?'
25. Excellents posts Gooey, both of them. I absolutely agree that the info and the sources that make up the numbers can be terribly skewed. Does ANYONE see ANY pit bull in Candy? I have had 3 different people ask me if she is a pit mix. While I do strongly believe there is some terrier in there, I'm leaning more towards Jack Russell or even Fox. Some people think Candy is part pit, so if she were to even nip someone or their dog, are they going to say a pit bull did it? Or a blond terrier mix of some sort?
