So many of the people who fight dogs will also say they love dogs. I cannot reconcile this, how can you send something you supposedly love into a pit to fight another dog, a dog that may well kill or grossly injure your dog. EVERYONE who fights dogs, breeds dogs specifically for continued dog aggression, or goes to the fights to see dogs tear into each other shares the shame and responsibility of more BSL being passed, more pit bull type dogs being put to death and the general publics fear leading to such a severe bias against these dogs. To borrow a phrase, 'If you are NOT part of the solution, you ARE part of the problem'
It should be no surprise that this attitude prevails - all one has to do is look at all the nursing homes and foster care facilities we have. Since we have the throw away mentality about our children and our seniors, is it any wonder that we dispose of our unwanted pets? We are human, but we are certainly NOT humane!
 I could not agree MORE with the above, well put! And it's so sad, if you try to explain this to some people, you get a blank stare, either they don't get it or they think it's a perfectly ok way to be.

Wasn't Duck recently spayed? How is she?
-
Well, I should think Duck comes first. Is he still at your house? Poor Duck, she must be confused.

Well, I DO see where I missed a great deal of this story so I'm trying to catch up now. I've had to work all weekend and since a nasty virus (Red worm) invaded our entire network, I had NO internet yesterday. Serious withdrawel and a LONG day at work.

Um, wait a minute. How long has he been hanging around your house? Isn't it possible some other person is frantically looking for their dog? Ok, I know it's JUST as possible that no one is...but a friendly dog that looks to be in decent shape might have slipped his collar, snuck out, drifted away from home. Are you trying to find his owner? Posting any photos or news of him in the general area that he started following you? Unless I missed part of this story, I know if one of my dogs got out by some weird unforseen blue moon phase and I could not find them I would be frantic with fear and sick at heart. Granted mine are tattooed but Jesse's tattoo cannot even be read so it's not much good in his case. Beside, I think Duck still needs a great deal of your attention and would probably be most jealous!

I had trouble going back to it myself, see if this link will work. If it does, the first article is the one. http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/search/fastfind.cgi?jump=1&word_option=or&word=inhumane p.s. I think I know what I did wrong the first time!

Warning, this is not an easy read, very sad and anger inducing. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?=/c/a/2003/01/26/LV123825.DTL

I too have heard of concerns with the dogs neck when they have on a GL. I would be especially concerned of a sudden lunge where the dogs head is going to snap around rather sharply. Perhaps some training say indoors or in an area with only minor distractions and using clicker to reinforce desired behaviour would be helpful. Even if you use a GL in this situation, you can build up the dogs understanding of how you EXPECT him to behave while rewarding him for doing so. After you see that your dog is 'getting it', switch to the regular collar while asking for the same level of behaviour. Don't introduce distractions until you've practiced quite a bit and are seeing a consistant level of cooperation from your dog. Every now and then, put the GL back on for a little reminder but do be mindful of his neck. As Luka-pop mentioned, the motion of the dogs head being pulled sideways as well as the possible upward twist is not going to be good for their necks.

Goo, could you post some specifics about when they were there filming? I plan to send them MY comments that I would love to see such footage and would like at least a date to include. Thanks,

My dogs only get compressed rawhide. It can still cause a problem but as a rule, they work their way through much less quickly. I also supervise them while they are chewing on it. They have their rawhide for about 20 minutes, then I pick it up for another day. If I see any sign of flaps or chunks, I take it away. I also gave my dogs greenies for the first time last night, they all loved them. Even Jesse finished his, he is not at all an aggressive chewer and usually loses interest in rawhide after just a few minutes. I did get the petitie size, they come in a bag of 24 for $14.99, pretty pricey. Took Brittany about 10 minutes which is surprising as she is the hardest chewer. Candy and Jesse finished theirs in about 15-20 minutes each.

Paging NancyB! I've PM'd you to see if you've heard of the Big Dog Kennel in Keswick VA. A friend is looking for a Rottie and mentioned them. They also have Dobies. Any info you might be able to share will be greatly appreciated!

I doubt the buffered aspirin caused his death, how many per day was he getting? Jesse gets buffered aspirin, not every day yet but close. The buffered aspirin probably made Jarvis' last days a bit less painful 13 years is probably in the average range. I think it's lovely how you are still caring for your old boy.
They drool, shed and snore.
Bet they have big dog farts too.

I don't know about the others but I do NOT recommend Canidae anymore to anyone. I've heard from too many people on others lists that I use that it gave their dogs super soft stools. I know it gave Jesse and Brittany soft stools and Jesse pooped all the time!

I'd also check his paws to see if any cuts, bruises, foreign objects etc. If you are walking in snow/ice, it could build up between the toes and cause pain. Check the toenails too, make sure none are broken.

So sad to hear you also have Belgian Malinois. Wonder how many have had to be rescued that were of your breeding or associated with your breeding.

Just curious, being that laduenda and others feel that breeding some or all of the dog aggressiveness out of a pit would be wrong, is there a bona fide reason these dogs were bred to be dog aggressive in the first place? Not just for sport, not just for fun, did it ever truly serve a purpose? A purpose such as herding dogs helping with the flocks or herds, hunting dogs helping put food on the table, working dogs serving mankind in SO many ways. Certainly I would agree that SOME traits of the breeds should be preserved, those that serve a useful purpose. Even if my herding dog was to have never seen sheep, his ability to work them would be a good thing. Even if a lab or golden never gets to retrieve a bird, their ability to do so would be a good thing. Breeds have EVOLVED over time, they are not used for their original purpose. How many Borzoi today run down wolves and kill them? What if they still did? What if breeders of Borzoi boasted about how 'game' their dogs were and that the aggression in their dogs was 'natural' and desired? What if this meant your average dog on the street was not safe as the breeding of Borzoi over time meant that any canine in their path was subject to being attacked or killed? Just how stupid does one have to be to celebrate their dog aggressive dogs and insist on perpetuating this because it's part of the dogs history? What good is dog to dog aggression? Will it be the downfall of the pit bull? Will BSL be enacted more and more? Face it laduenda, breeders who INSIST on their RIGHT and DUTY to breed dog aggressive dogs are hand in hand with those who fight their dogs, you will share the responsibility of your supposedly beloved breed being banned, shot on sight, destroyed in shelters, hated and feared by the general public. You also share the responsibility for the BYB's who have jumped on the 'tough dog' bandwagon and breed dogs that are not only dog aggressive but are increasing human aggressive due to poor breeding practices. I sick to death of hearing people like you talk about how much you love and care about your dogs while you continue to decrease those very dogs right to survival in a world that DOES NOT HAVE A NEED for dog aggressive dogs! If there survival depended on evolving to a dog that was not inclined to simply attack another dog on sight, why would you NOT want to breed in that direction? If it did, would you want your dogs to evolve? Or die out?

I have heard good things about diamond, I think Hobbit uses it? I use Bil-Jac dry. My only quibble on it so far is the senior food is too soft and tends to crumble a good bit. The adult food does not have this problem. Perhaps they made the senior softer to accomodate an older dogs teeth and gums, well my older dog still chomps his big dog cookie every day so I don't think he needs a softer kibble.

so glad to hear little Guy is coming along and feeling frisky!

sorry to hear of your troubles Kiger.
Why would they want to breed dogs full of skin problems, vision problems, and temperament prob.s?
For the MONEY honey! They can advertise these dogs as RARE to the ignorant and get far more than average in some cases.
-
I have to agree with Kiger regarding the HSUS and the ASPCA. Since I do not know their entire agenda, I choose to lend my support my local shelters and rescue orgs.

ok, where's the smacking oneself in the head icon? I KNEW I should have dug further in the site before I dug myself a hole. Now that I see the white dobies for sale and at stud, DISGUSTING!

OK, what am I missing? It does not scream puppy miller to me, not even BYB. Is this a color genetics mismatch? (I admit I skipped most of that discussion as it was over my head) From the site:
We also wanted a puppy with the conformation and pedigree that would allow Jessie to breed her if she wanted to later. It was a tall order. Once we found the right breeder, we had to wait several months for the right puppy.
also:
Again, we wanted the conformation and pedigree that would allow Molly to breed later on if she wanted to
If anything, at least on the surface, it sounds to me like SOME thought went into getting these dogs with the future in mind. I did not read where the people planned on pumping puppies out non stop from just any dogs. There ARE people in the world who put intelligent thought into the breeding of dogs. Again, if I missed something glaring, please enlighten me.
