Aw, they're beautiful! I can't read a word of your site, but the dogs are gorgeous! :D

I'm so sorry for your loss. :(

I did a quick google search. Good info here: http://www.thepetcenter.com/gen/hw.html

I wish I had something to add. All I can suggest is that you ask your vet millions of questions, get a second opinion if you don't feel confident in your vet, and get your other animals on heartgard to prevent future problems. You might also try searching the internet for heartworm treatments, side affects and such. Hugs and good luck!!!

Hard to tell. My dogs occasionally cough a bit, but then it goes away right away. If it keeps up, it's safest to ask your vet. :D

How Old Is The Dogomania Population?
GreyhoundMama replied to GreyhoundMama's topic in Everything about dogs
Oh, good, the ages are creeping up. I love a board with a wide variety of people on it! :D C'mon, though, someone's gotta be older than me!!! -
I found a poll that asked how many people were over or under 18, but I have a feeling that there are tons of people way outside that range of possibilities. So, let's see what the age dispersion is ...

Wow, interesting combination of breeds! Male or female? In my breeds, 8 weeks is such a tiny infant, we usually can't get them until they're 12 weeks. But the tiny babies are soooo cute. :D Good luck, and I hope you'll post photos!!!

Hi and welcome! :D I love pharoahs, and have met many in my travels. I've always been into sighthounds. I had borzoi when I was younger, and now have two greyhounds and three Italian greyhounds. I sometimes compete with my dogs in lure coursing and racing. The pharoah hounds are always the loudest, most excited, rowdy ones, wanting to chase that bunny at any opportunity. They're amazing!! If you haven't already, I hope you'll share some pictures with us!

I wish I had the statistics in front of me. It's my understanding that pit bulls are not nearly as frequent a biter as many other breeds. I think chihuahuas are #1, but of course they can't do much damage with their tiny mouths. But if I remember correctly, it was something like a german shepard with the most dangerous rating. No one's suggesting we do away with them because they're popular. Rin Tin Tin, and all the war stories, and police dogs, and so on, make GSDs seen as heros. But they can be very dangerous if trained badly, just like many large dogs. I'm not in favor of any breed-specific legislation or removal. That just blindly attempts to address a symptom, not the problem. The problem is idiots who don't properly raise, train, and restrain their dogs. And people who engage in macho fighting "sports" with animals. I know an Italian greyhound who was used as live bait to "train" fighting dogs. The lucky IG survived and ended up in rescue. People who do that are sick, and they create monsters out of man's best friend.
See I dont like the idea of breeding at all but if people are breeding anyway, I see no problem with what your saying. If people are going to breed something for nothing other than looks and are considering "responsible breeders" then I dont see how creating a breed with "good" intentions is wrong. I do mean that honestly, but, again, I dont like the idea of breeding in general.
From a personal perspective, I agree with you. I made a decision a long time ago that I would never breed anything. Too many dogs and cats are destroyed every year, just because people breed too many of them. Four out of five of my dogs are rescues, and I expect to always, in future, take an "unwanted" animal, rather than a "new" one. If this were a perfect world, with no unwanted animals, and no puppy mills, then that would be a different story. It's a complicated issue though. What if all the responsible people stopped breeding, and all our dogs were from puppy mills? In my radical moments I think there should be a ban on breeding until all unwanted animals have loving homes. Would that work? What new problems would that create?

Are american bulldogs hyper?? Just bought one.
GreyhoundMama replied to colby0528's topic in Group 2
I don't know anything about that breed. But for what its worth, my little Merlin is the only one of mine I raised as a puppy. He was pretty laid back as a puppy, and I found that was a pretty good indicator of his adult personality. Other iggies I know who are hyper, started out as hyper pups. Good luck. -
Oh, man, this is the second hit-by-car I've read about tonight. So sad ... I'm so sorry for your loss. :(

I've heard that before. But I've seen enough mixes with black, or partially black tongues to wonder. My brother's purebred golden retriever has a black spot on his tongue.

That's really sweet! I love it!!! :D

He sounds fabulous!!! Ditto on pics!!! :D

I've noticed that rescue groups vary considerably in what they'll allow. Some won't adopt to full time workers, some require a fenced yard, some won't adopt certain breeds to families with children, or small dogs to families with large dogs. It goes on and on. If all those rules were enforced all the time, most of us wouldn't have dogs. Thank goodness many rescuers understand that the dog needs love and care, but doesn't require perfection of us. I agree with you on crates. I don't use them, unless I'm at a performance event and am running one of my other dogs. If my dogs had to be confined, I'd use a room with a baby gate or something. Hugs to you, and it sounds to me that you're a wonderful dog parent!!!

Wow. I'm speechless. I guess its a good thing the dog didn't have more time to bond with them, or the poor pup would be even more traumatized by the abandonment. :( Clearly these people had no clue what they were getting into, and should go back to the drawing board. Perhaps a stuffed animal would be more to their liking. I'm sure they could find a beanie baby to love. :bad-words:

My dog was killed by the UPS Truck
GreyhoundMama replied to kristicounselor's topic in Everything about dogs
Sorry for your loss. :( I don't know what you should do. If your dog was loose, I doubt anyone could fault the driver. If someone let him out of a fenced area, or somesuch, perhaps you have a case. But I'm not sure what you're asking about insurance settlement? -
One of my friends has five Italian greyhounds. The only one who pays attention to treat balls is her oldest/largest male. And he goes nuts for them! He has two of them, and they keep rolling under the couch. He pesters her mercilessly until she gets it out for him. While I was visiting her last week, one of my dogs showed some interest. But mine prefer soft, stuffed toys, preferably with squeakers in them. :D

There's a book called something like How To Find The Best Dog For You. It's good at giving overviews of the breeds, and ranks them as to a bunch of properties, including how well they guard. You can probably find a copy at the library, or Amazon or whatever. It might give you a good start. The akita is a good choice, in my opinion, only if you're a very experienced dog owner. They're very big, strong, and are not the easiest of first dogs. If I'm reaading right, I'm guessing this is your first dog? Then in addition to guard properties, you need to make sure you get a dog that you can handle. Make darn sure you don't get a retriever. All they'll do with an intruder is lick them to death and welcome them into your home!!! Good luck!!!
Looks like Petsmo has a broker site for millers?
Well, in that case I won't respond to the original question. But, really, many breeds are created by humans, and if the breeder has good intentions, plans to register with the AKC, has a history of understanding genetics, and has a legitimate goal that isn't met by current breeds, than I don't understand where the problem lies. For instance, there is an effort to create a mid-size, long haired sighthound. A borzoi breeder has created it mostly from borzoi and whippets. It's called Silken Windhound. The stud book is closed, there are tons of them breeding true, they're in the process of getting AKC recognition, and they're accepted at some sighthound sporting events, although not for ribbons. I love the breed, and see an honest niche for it. Why is that wrong? On the other hand, the proliferation of things like cockapoos and such is another matter altogether. No one's even pretending to make them a real, registered breed. And in those cases I agree with you all 100%

I was thinking their might be some pharoah hound or ibizan in him too, although those breeds aren't that common yet, so not too likely to be part of a mix. Do you have a picture of him standing from the side so we can see his chest and tuckup? Whatever his mixture, he's sure cute!!! :D
