what does your dogs name mean?
lsailor replied to CincoandDahlilasgirl's topic in Everything about dogs
This is a great thread :D SparkyLou (c@t) - Sparky as in electrical spark, named when she was climbing the christmas tree and biting lights, Lou because it had a nice ring to it Luna (c@t) - Means "the moon" in Latin. Luna was the Roman goddess of the moon, frequently depicted driving a white chariot through the sky. Named after the c@t on Sailor Moon. Oscar (c@t) - Means "deer lover" in Gaelic. I just liked the name & it seems to fit him Gus (c@t) - From the Roman name Constantinus which was derived from the Latin word constans meaning "constant, steadfast". Actually named Gus because he reminds me of the shy mouse on Cinderella. Beckham - named after David Beckham the soccer player. When I found him he was trying to play soccer with a kid who hauled off & kicked him :( Adora - From the longer name Adoracion which means "adoration" in Spanish. Her full name is AdoraBull. -
Does anyone know of a good place to find a APBT puppy
lsailor replied to merickson1131's topic in Amstaffs & Pit Bulls
Aww...I love Reggie's lips! What a handsome guy :iloveyou: I would suggest a shelter as well. There are so many pit bulls in shelters here in California it's insane. I'm not familiar with the situation in Texas, but I did find this sweet guy on Pet Harbor: www.petharbor.com and do a search for ID # A018982, Cooper - he's in Texas. Hope you find a very special dog :) -
pzoo9 - I am so glad you posted again to update us on the situation! The replies you received initially were pretty upsetting and it sounds like you're doing the right thing for your family by having the dog checked out and re-homing him if necessary. I'm sure the reason you belong to this board is because you love your dog but your baby takes priority. It's good to know that you are willing to give your dog the benefit of the doubt, while still keeping your family safe. :)
this isn't a mixing question but does ne1 know if Dove works on dogs?
I don't think it's safe to use human shampoo on dogs - from what I have read it has some chemicals in it that aren't good for dogs to ingest. I think the only safe human shampoo to use on a dog is Johnson's Baby Shampoo - only the yellow one (and only the name brand). ---- in reply to AllAmericanPup's question about mixing shampoos - I think it's fine. I have done it in the past with no problems. The only hazard I know of is ending up with a weird scent!
-
My dog Beckham has the same problem. I'd say clean it very well like everyone else has suggested and then place a bowl of food in the spot where she was going (if it was the same spot each time). You may have her checked for a UTI as well. Beckham was holding it so much during the rain that he developed a UTI - which I discovered when he kept having accidents in the house after the rain had stopped. Hope you resolve this soon! It's no fun...that's for sure!
-
I have to say that I agree with AllAmericanPup - I am shocked that so many said to put the dog down or rehome it as the *first* option. Why not take him to a doctor to check for physical problems? I know I get b*tchy when I'm in pain (and so do most people I know)...wouldn't it make sense for a dog to get b*tchy when they're in pain? If there is nothing wrong with him physically, wouldn't you take the time to consult a behaviorist and/or a trainer? If you have had the dog for 2 years and the baby is 11 months old...the dog probably has some pack ranking issues with the baby that may be resolved through a trainer or behaviorist. Of course - I completely understand that your human child comes first. I'm sure you are already keeping the baby & dog separated as someone else suggested. That being said, isn't your dog part of your family? Has he ever forgiven you when you have made a mistake with him? Doesn't your dog deserve at least a chance to prove himself? If all else fails, please call a Labrador or all-breed rescue. There are homes out there without children (if that is his issue). Euthanasia does not have to be your first option.

Does your dog like to imitate the things you do?

My husband was using a hand-pump to pump up an exercise ball, it was making a squeaking noise on each compression. Beckham thought my husband needed help, so he ran upstairs & got one of his squeaky balls from his I-Qube. He came back downstairs, stood next to my husband and started squeaking the ball in time with the hand-pump. We thought it was pretty funny :) -
This is an interesting thread, I like reading about everyone's dogs and what their personalities and quirks are :) My two: Beckham - 1 yr old rescued APBT mix. He has the energy for at least 4 hours of play every day, but NEEDS at least one hour of hard playing each day or he turns in to a bossy brat. He does like toys, he has never destroyed any, I don't think he plays with them by himself though. Loves the squeaky plush balls from his I-Qube. Loves to chase them, but isn't so good about bringing them back. At the dog park he is all about wrestling with other dogs, he pays no attention to toys there. Adora - 5 month old French Bulldog. She has a reasonable amount of energy, enough for 3 hours of playing per day. She usually wrestles with Beckham for about an 1 1/2 hrs at night and she takes lots of breaks. She likes toys, doesn't destroy them, plays when them by herself when she's feeling energetic. She has a Hollee Roller ball that she loves batting around and chasing. My gal does not fetch - she's definately not a retriever! Both of my two love going to the dog park and doggie daycare and both prefer wrestling with other dogs to playing with toys. If they can wrestle with a toy, that's good too :)

I wonder if that is a real picture? The poor puppy looks like he has encephalitis! I hope it's just a Photo Shop job...

Yep - mine do too :D Beckham O'Shaunessy Adora Bull

B-1 Did look like a hedgehog! I am partial to Carl (F-4?). You are all right, they don't look like any of the poms I have seen. And to think these people were charging between $800 - $8,000 for them. What the heck is that? $8,000!?! Outrageous nonsense. I'm glad they are prosecuting the case and the puppies are all safe & sound now.
-
Congrats! That's great that you are choosing to adopt a pit bull puppy. They're a lot of fun (and hard work too) and well worth it. I feel the same way about some of the rescues in our area. They want nothing short of a blood sample and a permanent leash attached from the dog to your hip. I understand their position and know that they want what's best for the dog - but sometimes it seems like they get carried away... Good luck in your search for the perfect puppy! :banan:

From what I've been told by show breeders it is basically a mill registry. They are not selective as to the dogs registered. Many breeders say to specifically avoid APRI (amongst other registries).
-
That is really funny! I wish I would have watched that episode. I'll have to Tivo it :) My pit mix is hardly a force to be reckoned with... It would be either: He'd bark his head off and try to escort them to the door by a pant leg (his standard routine when someone new comes over) OR If they brought him a treat (he's partial to squeaky balls and fruit snacks) he'd get a goofy grin on his face, escort them to the couch by the pant leg, and proceed to sit on their lap and lick them repeatedly. Yep, there's a reason pits don't have the reputation of being good guard dogs! !
Wish I had stayed away from Banfield. I had all 3 done there then shortly after found out about the trouble. They gave us a letter describing the type of chip and what to tell the shelters if one of them get lost. I would like to ring their necks instead. :x
I freaked out when I got the letter from Banfield. I had Beckham microchipped last year and was really rather PO'd to think that his chip would only work on certain scanners. I have a good relationship with our vet at Banfield so I asked her what I should do with Beckham so he would be properly chipped. She said that only 2 dogs from her clinic had received the microchip that letter was talking about. Apparently is was a "Banfield" brand microchip and wasn't widely used. She double checked Beck's records and said that he had a HomeAgain microchip and that is all they use now. When I got home I checked his paperwork & sure enough it was a HomeAgain chip. You might ask your vet to see which chip they have - hopefully it's not the Banfield brand!

All of the Pom puppies have been adopted! :D http://www.petprojectfoundation.org/adopt_a_dog.shtml There are pictures of them on this page: http://www.petprojectfoundation.org/pom.shtml I live in the area - there were tons of people who applied for them. It is very sad that these people kept their dogs in bad conditions. Luckily they all have very carefully screened homes now.

Ash - Thought this breed selector might help you out: http://animal.discovery.com/guides/dogs/selector/selector.jsp When I tried it, the 2 breeds of dogs I have came up as my closest matches. :) Also - check out the Maltese & Small-Breed rescues in your area. My friends found a wonderful mix from our local small-breed rescue. Rescues return the love 100 fold :Dog_run:

now she's 11wks old, still think she is a p r terrior?
lsailor replied to sailordragon87's topic in Everything about dogs
What a cutie! How much does she weigh? She does look a bit like she has some terrier in her, but also maybe one of the Spitz breeds. :hmmmm: -
Thanks hicksstar, I just hope someone reads my post, who is planning on getting a dog from an importer/broker, and thinks twice about it to make sure they know what they're getting in to... Here in the US, and I'm sure elsewhere, being in the dog import/brokering business is becoming very lucrative. Especially amongst the bulldog breeds - although I've heard a bit about imports being popular in a few other breeds. There are many unscrupulous importers/brokers out there. Unfortunately a lot of people are getting very sick dogs and immeasurable heartbreak. I probably dealt with one of the best importers - at least my baby is healthy and I'm sure she was cared for correctly during her time with the importer, but I was still misled in regards to her parentage. I'll just chalk this one up to experience and letting others know that even the best of the best are often unscrupulous! You truly don't know who you're buying a dog from, unless you visit the breeder... -Lesley

This message is for anyone who is thinking of buying an imported French Bulldog or who already owns one... Hi, my name is Lesley, and I am an imported French Bulldog buyer. Before I decided to purchase my Frenchie (my first purebred) I spent about a year researching the breed. I had heard about the bad importers and had talked with a girl that got her Frenchie from a certain infamous Southern California import broker, just check out FBRN and you'll see who I mean. Luckily, her dog is very healthy. I asked her what questions she had asked the importer, etc. and found that she had not done much investigation into the importer & the pedigree of her dog prior to purchasing him. I made mental notes of what I should ask if I decided to get an imported dog. I looked at American breeder's websites, but only emailed 2 or 3 - they had long waiting lists. I got discouraged easily and decided that there HAD to be good importers out there somewhere. It made sense to me that since Eastern European countries are very poor, that reputable breeders would sell their dogs to people in the US, Canada, etc. where there would (presumably) be a better chance of them finding good homes. I found my importer through a Yahoo search. She has a very impressive site, with TONS of good information on the breed. She is knowledgeable and was upfront about being an importer (I found plenty of breeders that turned out to be importers). I grilled her extensively, had her send me pictures of Adora's sire - who was reported to be a Champion. I researched his pedigree and the kennels that the importer said she did business with. All came back as being very good - so the money was sent. I even referred a friend who was also looking for a Frenchie - they ended up buying Adora's sister. Adora and her sister arrived, we were very pleasantly surprised. Both are beautiful little girls, healthy and good natured. Took them both to the vet the next day, the vet said they are both healthy and was impressed with how tight their knees and hips are and how well they breathe. And then...I received Adora's pedigree in the mail yesterday. Her sire is not who I was told he was. She has none of the bloodlines I was told she had. She was not bred by the kennel I was told she is from. The kennel she came from is an exporter for other breeders in Russia. I do not know anything about the breeder - they could be good or they could be a puppy mill. I am going to find out who this person is and I can only hope they are a good breeder. It will not change anything, but I want to know. The moral of the story is, all of the research in the world won't help you if the person you're getting your dog from lies about where the dog came from. I am very lucky that Adora is a healthy puppy - lots of people aren't so lucky. Be careful who you trust. If you are thinking of buying an import or already have one, please join the Imported Frenchies Yahoo group - we'd love to have you!
hey all, im getting a dotson full breed dog and i want to know what to exspect, any help would be appreciated   :D
Hi Daisy, Hopefully some of your questions can be answered here or you can at least be pointed in the right direction to help you out  Just a few questions for you: - How old is the dog? - Where are you getting him/her from? - When will he/she be at your house? - How old are you (noticed you are a student in your profile, if we know your age maybe we can help you a bit better)? My friends have 2 Dachshund boys (littermates) that are very sweet and loving with people they know. They are protective of their owners, and a bit agressive with each other over food and...they bark...a lot. In their defense, they have never been given any formal training or socialization. I would suggest that if you are getting a puppy to take it to basic training classes and after it has the vaccinations it needs to make sure it gets lots of socialization with all kinds of people & animals. Hope to hear from you soon :hand:

This seems like a positive thing, a bill to repeal the dangerous dog law in IL was struck down: http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=2437 I'm not sure where these legislators come up with this BS - it certainly is not based on facts...here's a comparison of the ATTS (American Temperament Test Society) passing percentages with the proposed "banned" dog list and the top 10 AKC registered breeds in 2004... Proposed Banned Breeds vs. Top 10 AKC Reg Breeds in 2004 (in red) Staffordshire Bull - 93.2% Labrador Retreiver - 91.1% Siberian Husky - 86.7% Boxer - 84.7% Alaskan Malamute - 84.1% Golden Retreiver - 83.6% APBT - 83.4% AmStaff - 83.3% German Shepherd - 82.8% - also on proposed banned breed list St. Bernard - 82.9% Rottweiler - 82.3% Toy Poodle - 80.9% Yorkshire Terrier - 80% Great Dane - 78.6% Beagle - 78.2% Shih Tzu - 76.9% Doberman - 76.5% Akita - 72.9% Chihuahua - 70.6% Chow Chow - 69.3% Dachsund - 66.7% (Smooth Standard)

I think there may have been a misunderstanding and I'm not sure we're even talking about the same kind of bulldogs. I was referring to "English" Bulldogs, not all bulldogs. I don't take what one website (dogbreedinfo.com) has to say as the gospel truth, but I was asked where I got my information. That was one source of many. I would hope a person who was interested in a certain breed would not rely on one source of information to make their decision. I have an American Pit Bull Terrier mix and a French Bulldog. They have very different temperaments and exercise needs from each other. My APBT mix can run for hours on end, but the Frenchie tires after 30 minutes. Some people have Frenchies that are very active, and I personally knew an APBT that was a couch potato. It obviously depends on the particular dog. :eek3: I had no idea that posting my opinion (in a nice way, I thought) would result in this.

as they require minimal exercise and are fairly calm dogs.
WRONG! where did you get this info?..and should you be passing it off as the god given truth?...I think not...
I never claimed what I had to say was the 'god given truth' and I'm sorry you took it that way. I was only passing on generalities of what I have seen in my friend's Bulldogs & what is listed in various descriptions of the breed. www.dogbreedinfo.com/bulldog.htm Living Conditions The English Bulldog is good for apartment life. They are very inactive indoors and will do okay without a yard. This breed is an indoor dog. Bulldogs do best in temperate climates as the breed can chill easily in cold weather and have trouble cooling off in very hot weather. Exercise Some adult Bulldogs would just as soon not take any exercise, while others are full of energy. In any case all Bulldogs will stay fitter if given some regular. Fit English Bulldogs are capable of moving very quickly for short periods of time.
