Hey, does anybody have any recommendations on steam-vacs? I'm looking for a cleaner to do my carpets and clean from Peanut and Pixie's accidents and pawprints. I already have a Bissell Little Green machine, which works ok, except for I have to prepare the cleaning solution in a separate spray bottle, because the sprayer on the machine stopped working. The scrubber and the suction are still ok, though. Also, I'd kind of like to be able to do larger portions at a time, without have to be down on my knees to do it. Also, anybody have a favorite cleaning solution they use? I'm currently using stuff that I got from Petco, "Simple-something" that's from the same makers of the enzymatic spray stuff I use. Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.

I picked Pixie up yesterday. What a cute little fluffball! She and Peanut were doing alright on the car right home, sniffing each other out, then when we got home, Peanut started dive bombing her. Kind of running at her, and trying to get a bite in on her ears. She's not having any of that, and she growls and barks at him when he tries. For now, I've been trying to grab Peanut and tell him "No bite!" Any other suggestions on how to get these two to be buddies?

She is a maltese. It's funny, because the look she has on her face in the top pic, is so much like Peanut. Hopefully they'll settle in together nicely. I'm going to have to get a camera... :D Especially in light of the fact that I'm going to make them Halloween costumes... The choices are: Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Angel and Devil, or... Salt and Pepper shakers (which is my current favorite)

TGIF, the day I get to go pick up Pixie! So this weekend I get to spend introducing my puppies together. Here are a couple of pictures taken of Pixie a couple of weeks ago. ESS, I think that BkB, was trying to say that Nea shouldn't worry what other people think about how she's taking care her dogs... You know, Who cares what OTHER people think, not Who cares about what YOU think... I think...

Well, I took Peanut to a different vet today. I like this place much better so far. When I called to make an appointment, and mentioned it was for a cough, the receptionist let me know that I'd need to keep Peanut out in the car until a room was ready... thus not spread anything to other dogs. Already better than the other place. So, I gave them his history and everything, and the vet tried massaging his throat to coax a cough, and nothing. She gave him some x-rays and said that his throat and lungs look clear, but he might be pre-disposed to collapsing trachea and upper-respiratory infections, because his trachea gets pretty narrow. She says that he's probably stuck in a vicious cycle of coughing causes irritated throat causes coughing... She told me to STOP giving him his pills. He'd already run the course of Clavamox, but was still taking the antihistamine-steroid, which was prednisone. Which the new vet said was not good for puppies. So, she gave me drops of cough suppressant, to soothe his throat and allow inflammation to go away. She also taught me how to give the drops, which the other vet didn't do. She says he's not contagious, so yay! Especially since we're picking up his little sister (Pixie!) tomorrow. She also gave me some tips on training Peanut, since he's such a wriggler. She taught me a couple of puppy holds to practice while we watch tv or sit around, where I make sure to get my hand up above his paws, so he knows who's in charge. And she gave me some tips on crate/potty training. I think I've found my vet! Thanks for all the advice!

how to take a photo of a puppy
boosiebutt replied to mouseatthebusstop's topic in Everything about dogs
20. Thank your lucky stars that you have an actual camera, and not just a webcam. Try getting a puppy to stay next to your camera, while you try to line up the shot, by looking behind you at your computer, while the puppy runs up and down the stairs!  Which is why the only pics I have are from when my sister comes home from Chicago, and brings her camera with her. *sigh* -
BB,
I would be offended but I would also brush you off as being ignorant as most others I deal with weekly, who really do think things such as that. I am aware those are not your personal feelings and you were just making a point, I hope.
OK, I see what you mean... So others will just need to brush you off as ignorant about their feelings about their own favorite breeds, then.
-
Would you be "easily offended" if I said that I didn't really like Pit Bulls, that I think they are ugly and because they are poorly bred and have been made by humans into monsters that eat other dogs and small children? I think a lot of people would be offended. Just because a breed is not often maligned, doesn't make it alright to target.

PS. He hasn't gone off his food or water. Snarfs them down, no prob. Edited to add: PPS. He hasn't been acting depressed. We'll go for walks and he'll be at the end of his leash, sniffing around, and pause to ahem, ahem, ahem, hack, than get moving again. His poos have remained solid, no diarrhea. He is 4 months old, and had the bordetella shot 2 months ago.

Peanut has what I thought was kennel cough, but it's not going away, and I just want to check to see what else it might be and what else I should do. A couple of weeks ago, I boarded Peanut at my vet's while I went out of town for the weekend to visit my sister. I had previously gotten Peanut a bordetella vaccination (shot, not intranasal). When I picked him up after the weekend (dropped off Friday, picked up Monday), he had a cough. It was like he was working something up with deep, kind of "ahem"s, then end up with a sharper hack. He kind of crouches back, when he'd doing it. Sometimes, but not everytime it would end up with him spitting up foamy spit. I took him back to the vet to get checked out, and they prescribed him some cough syrup, and clavamox liquid antibiotic. I proceeded to shoot the stuff out of a syringe into the general direction of his mouth. I tried to hold him still, and get it far enough into his mouth that he'd swallow, but he was pretty squiggly, so I probably got more medicine around his mouth than in it. So, after the couple of weeks he was on that, he still had the cough. I took him back in, and the vet gave him two different kinds of pill. One is an antihistamine & steroid, and the other is clavamox pills. I give him a quarter of the first and half of the second, twice a day. I have enough pills for 10 days. He's (*I'm*) much better with the pills, especially interspersed with teeny bits of Pupperoni (my dog is a pupperoni whore    ) He's been on those since Monday afternoon, and his cough doesn't seem to be getting any better. When I come home, and he gets excited, it's like he's breathing/snorting through phleghm bubbles in his chest. And also, he's started to kind of dribble this morning, instead of a proper pee. Does anybody think that he could be getting pneumonia now, or was he misdiagnosed to begin with? Should I get him back into the vet soonsoon, or am I just freaking out more than I need to? Also, I'm thinking of switching vets, since I've had problems with them before, like him getting a puppy shot, then when I asked about getting the bordetella shot as well, they said they thought he had it already. It turned out that there is another Peanut Brown in there files, and they had the wrong chart for Peanut. So they leave us in the exam room to get the right chart, and I'm left watching Peanut for any signs of reaction to the shot they gave him, thinking it was a different Peanut!

DAL, I had thought of stacking baby gates, but the worry then is- If he can climb one baby gate, maybe he can climb the other, then he just has that much more of a drop on the other side... I might be going with a clear plastic baby-gate that I saw in walmart, with no paw holds for him to climb up. So I've gotta crate that seems just the right size: just his length, wide enough to turn around in, and high enough to sit up in. Liz, I had been putting a pad thing in the bottom that was about an inch thich with foam put in a little case with faux sheepskin on top and a nylon cloth on the bottom (from petco, if that jogs anybody's memory). So it definitely could be the case that he figured out the absorbancy of the pad and thought it'd be ok to go in there. Now I have a faux sheepskin rug that's really thin, with a rubberized backing, that I'm going to cut up to put into the bottom of his crate... that way it'll be comfier and slip free, but not giving him any ideas about going potty in there. We're going to try this out, and I'm going to make sure to be extra careful about making sure he goes before going into the crate, which might be one of my problems. I'll let you know how it's going! Accident free... 0 days

He just in the last couple of weeks started to potty in his crate. I don't know if 4 hours was maybe just too long for him, or what (I originally had him at this puppy day care for 4 weeks, where he got socialized to the max, and had just start crate training him about 3 weeks ago). Maybe he's getting himself so worked up about me leaving that he goes? I'm not sure... he's not a submissive urinator though... My aunt and uncle had one that peed everytime someone new went to pet her. I moved him to the bathroom, and he totally stunk up the place. I don't know if scared-alone pee smells different than regular pee or what, but I opened the window, shut the door, and let the fan run for a couple of days to air it out. He seemed to be getting more used to that, but just since yesterday, he's started to climb over the gate. I have one end of the bathroom covered in newspaper and a potty-pad, and the other end I have some toys, and the blanket that he likes to sleep on. So, I guess the plan is to find an escape proof baby gate, so he can't jump out while I'm at work. I read somewhere that baby gates are the way to go, something about the dog doens't feel as closed in when he can see out into rest of the house? Also, I read somewhere about hooking a leash to my belt, so that he doesn't sneak off and potty when I'm not looking. Does that sound like something I should do? Thanks for the help!

Hi, I've mentioned this in the introductions forum, but I'm a first-time dog mommy, and I'm having a little trouble potty training Peanut. He potties in his crate if I leave him in more than just a couple of hours (I only ever leave him in there for 4-4.5 hours, coming home at lunch and after work). I put him in my bathroom with a baby gate, but he's a little Houdini, and has escaped twice, once yesterday and once today. While I like having a dog to greet me at home, I'd rather have him greet me from BEHIND the baby gate. So pretty much, he still potties (and poos!) inside half the time. We had a cat when I was younger, and my dad kind of scarred her for life when she was just a wee little kitty by pushing her nose into her messes, and generally getting her all primed for a life of biting humans.... So, needless to say, I want to do the potty training right with mine. So, any advice? And don't be afraid to start me with the basics, after all, he is my first!

Help adding new puppy... Intro to current dog + name

Someone here at work just suggested Pearl... I've got a few for Coconut, but my GreatGrandma had a dog named CoCo, so that might be confusing. Someone here also suggested Pookie.... um, no... My sisters would KILL me. -

These are all good choices. I had thought of the nut names too, and thought Pistachio might be good, then they'd be two nuts and both start with a P. Or there's Pecan... Also on my suggestions list from work are Angel, Button, Bubbles, Cloud, Cotton, Coconut (PeaNUT CocoNUT), Pixie, Silver, Cream Puff, Little Bit, Itty, Bitty, Bitsy, Qtip, Latte, Snow _Fill in the Blank_, Star, Sunshine, Tink, Sugar, Cupcake, Popcorn (My mom says then I'd have to get another dog to name Cracker Jack), Poppy, and Prize... Good thing I have a couple of weeks to decide! Heather -
Hi! I am getting a female maltese puppy, and I'm trying to decide on a name for her. I already have a male yorkie named Peanut, and I'd like her name to go well with his, while still being a good name for her. She, of course, will be cute, small, and white, and she is also friendly and playful with her littermates & I am planning on getting her as well socialized as Peanut is. Also, does anybody have any advice on introducing the puppies? Peanut will be 4 1/2 mos. and the new puppy will be 8 wks when I bring her home. Thanks for your help! Heather

More questions from a new mommy...
boosiebutt replied to boosiebutt's topic in Everything about dogs
I'm in Cedar Rapids, just down I380. Poor Peanut would just sit there and shiver. And not a pee or poo would appear until we got inside with the nice warm air and nice soft carpet. I tried him in a little "x-small" sweatshirt from Petco, but it was still too big on him. Every couple of steps, one of his feet would come up into the sweatshirt and get stuck in there, causing him to trip around. Thankfully it's warmed up at least a little. -
What are they teaching in school these days?!?!?
boosiebutt replied to boosiebutt's topic in Everything about dogs
It's in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They actually have two of them here. My friend with a hound mix in Minneapolis goes to one, and she was praising them for "wearing down" her Maddie while she's at work. So, I looked up "Dog Daycare" on DexOnline (I don't know if everyone has Qwest for their phone company, but that's where I look up phone numbers and addresses online), and they had this place on there, then I searched for it on Google to find the web address. I checked out the website, then set up a meet and greet so I could check out the place, and they could check out to see if Peanut was aggressive, and see his vet records to check that he had all the shots he needed. They have a nice big space in there for the dogs, and they keep the doors open to a gated area outside, so the dogs can go in and out to play and poop. I bring some of Peanut's food in one of those Ziploc tupperware thingies, and they feed him lunch, and have him take a nap in his crate, and pay special attention to him, to give him lots of praise when he goes outside, and show him where the right place is to go if he starts to go inside. Can you sense a wee(-wee) bit of enthusiam in me about this place? It's great for my Mom too, because she takes it personally when Peanut goes in the house. -

LOL, pumpkin, that picture is super-cute! matty, thanks for the advice. Maybe if the groomer can get me started, it will make it easier for me to take care of his eyes, and maybe i could see him do it, it will help me see how to get Peanut "pinned down" to let me get it done! :D Do groomers use blow dryers? I've given Peanut a couple of baths, and try to blow him dry a little, because he gets the shivers even wrapped up in a towel and cuddled with me, but he doesn't like it at all! -

boosiebutt replied to boosiebutt's topic in Everything about dogs
It's a doggy-daycare, and they have a special program where they'll potty train, and crate train puppies. But they only take dogs for plain old daycare once they're a little older and neutered/spayed, unless they're in the program, then once they make it through the program, they can be in until they're 6 months, then they need to be fixed. Here's the link to the place: http://www.dogzonedaycare.com/ It's great, 'cause like I said it gives him a chance to meet other dogs and people, he gets lots of playtime during the day, and there's people who get paid to follow him around and make sure he doesn't make a teeny yorkie potty. -
Does anybody have a good solution for doggy eye-goober? Peanut has the fur around his eyes kind of stuck down with icky glue-y eye-goober. I tried just a warm wet paper towel, and an eye-wipe that I bougt from Petco, but it seems like it would take about 4 hours to get it done, and Peanut will stand for me doing it for about .0000000000000004 seconds. I'm afraid the goober stuff will eat up the fur on his face. Any suggestions? Also, anyone with a yorkie or other small, longhaired dog, when did you first get a grooming? Peanut is going totally gray on the top of his head, so he's got black tips, and gray roots, and at his parting, he looks like he's going bald at those spots. I did trim the fur on his ears myself, to try to get them to pop up, and lo and behold 3 days later, they're up! :bday: And, for random news I wanted to share, Peanut's new Yorkie neighbor came home yesterday. She's even more of a peanut than Peanut! Her owner doesn't know how old she is, gut she's still really black with dark tan on her ears only, so she can't be that old. We tried to introduce them, but Peanut was a little to rambunctious for her (plus she'd just been taken away from her mom and littermates, and driven for 2 hours, so she was a little wiped from the stress). Even though I've only had Peanut for a couple of weeks, I can't believe he was ever that tiny! (Mom says he was though.) Plus, I bought a little blanket coat and booties for Peanut. We had a cold snap in Iowa a couple of weeks ago, and poor Peanut was shivering everytime we went for a walk. I told my sisters I'd never be one of those people who dress up their dog... but, what're you gonna do? My baby's gotta be warm! Ok, enough of my jabber! Thanks for all of your advice! This is a great forum!
