Aujeszky's disease (also known as pseudorabies and mad itch) is caused by a herpesvirus, Herpesvirus suis. Although pigs are the reservoir host, other animals, for example cattle, sheep, dogs, cats and rats, can also be infected. These species are dead end hosts, however, and do not generally transmit the disease themselves, although cats and dogs may shed virus in their oral and nasal secretions. Infection in dogs and cats is usually associated with contact with infected pigs or eating uncooked, infected pig meat. Note that in some areas of the world this may include wild pig meat, e.g. wild boars. AUJESZKY'S DISEASE CLINICAL SIGNS Almost always fatal, and often rapidly so. First clinical signs seen in cats and dogs are usually behavioural changes: restlessness, anorexia and hypersalivation. Some dogs appear overexcited, continually barking. Often no clinical signs seen in cats as they run off to hide early in disease development. Intense pruritus, commonly localised around the face or mouth is often described as a characteristic sign of Aujeszky's disease in dogs. May become frenzied in an attempt to alleviate the intolerable itching, and self-mutilation can often result. It is in this form that the disease may be mistaken for rabies, but unlike rabid animals, cats and dogs with Aujeszky

I don't think I'd ever own a bigger dog, even though I've seen some that I think are beautiful and would be fun to work with. I like to have a dog that I can pick up fairly easily, and can fit mostly into my lap and easy to sit on the couch with. I don't know if my (far, far, far) in the future dogs will be quite as small as P&P (maturing at only 5-6lbs)

Halo?

She hasn't been food aggressive with me. I can pick her up and move her away from the food, or pick the food up and mvoe it away from her. I can also take rawhide sticks away from her. She and Peanut will growl at each other and over rawhide sticks, but they both eat out of the same bowl all the time without growling. I actually have two bowls, when I fill the first one, they both pounce in on it and chow down. Then when I dump the rest of their food into the second bowl, one will leave the first bowl to go to the other food, and the second one will see that, and get over there to see if that's the "better" bowl. Once they finish one bowl, they both go over to the other one, and finish that. I have just started to do NILIF. Pixie has some steps that I just bought that go up to the couch (she's can't jump up to the couch like Peanut can) I've told my family & friends not to pick Pixie up to the couch anymore, since she knows how to climb the steps. We had been picking her up whenever she bounced up against the couch saying "Pick me up, pick me up!" We need to work more on stay and come before I can do other stuff like, stay before we go upstairs, before we go outside, etc. But, I will definitely be handling her more, and tackling this before it becomes totally ingrained as a grown dog. Edited to say: PS. I just set up an appointment for Pixie's puppy shots (DHLPP & Bordatella) and I mentioned that I'd like to discuss her behavior issue. I'd like to check to make sure that she's not having a pain response as well. When I got her the breeder's vet and my vet both said she looked pretty perfect, but just in case she's having luxated patella, or is extra sensitive to pain (like when a brush catches a snarl). I'd like to know show I can treat her more delicately about that stuff. PPS. It feels so good to get this out. For some reason I was almost ashamed to admit that Pixie was having this problem. P&P are my first dogs ever, and my family used to own a biting cat, so I feel like I must be screwing up with my puppies. I'm actually tearing up here at work, because I want P&P to be good dogs, with me and others. And I don't ever want to resent them because they're "bad" because of my lack of ability to bring them up right. Jeez, it is just like they're my kids. :)

Pixie is 4 months. Since yesterday when she flipped when I held onto her paw, I'm thinking I need to handle her much more. Get her used to the idea that I'm allowed to pick her up, mess around with her paws, move her legs around, etc. So she knows I'm in charge, but that I'm not going to hurt her. Peanut is sooo much calmer and more docile and has always been. I don't know if Pixie is just a different temperment, or if it's because she's a bitch (never was pun more intended) and Peanut's a boy and that's how it is, or what.

Pixie's started to be all aggressive. She growls if you pick her up while she's sleepy. Growls if I play with her feet. Snarls when I put a sweater on for a walk outside. She's actually bit at me when I would groom her before I cut down her fur; if she felt the brush tugging at her hair she'd try to bite at it. And as I mentioned before, she FREAKS OUT if the nail clippers come near her. Same if I take to long putting on her sweater. I've been hoping she'd grow out of it, if I just ignored it, she'd get the idea that I wasn't going to stop if she growled at me. Last night, I handled her feet and she started the growling. So, I held onto her foot/lower leg, very lightly. She totally snapped and started snarling and barking and biting. Does anybody have any advice? I don't want her to be a "bad" dog. I don't want to have her be one of those vicious small dogs. My mom is anti-Pom because my uncle had one that was pretty evil. I want to be sure that I don't have to worry if somebody comes over that she'll snap at them if she doesn't feel like being touched. I'm just so worried about this...

OK, I think I'll be trying the white vinegar soak tonight. It's not so much stain remover that I'm worried about right, now. I hit everything I caught with the NM spray, and I don't have any stains that I can see but I want to make sure that all the odor is gone.

Pixie has had a couple of accidents on my bed, when I thinks she's got it all out, and I start reading, she goes potty before I realize what's happening. I wash my bedding of course, but I don't know if I'm getting it all taken care of. I don't want her to smell the previous potties and think it's ok to go on the bed. I saw on Petco's website that there's a Nature's Miracle for laundry, which looks just like a laundry detergent bottle. However, my local Petco doesn't carry it. I have all sorts of other Nature's Miracle products; the spray, the carpet cleaner solution... and I see that on there it has directions for pre-treating for laundry. So, before I go ahead and order some NM laundry soap from Petco (and pay the shipping!), does anybody have other suggestions for getting the odors out? Maybe I could add a bunch of NM solution to a soak for my bedding? But it does say not to dilute... Are there any other products I should look for?

Both P&P have collapsing trachea, and it hasn't been too bad for them (knock wood). Peanut had a cough for awhile, the vet gave some cough syrup to calm his throat because he had a whole bad cycle of coughing irritating his throat which made him cough etc etc. He's gotten over it since and is doing very well, and only has attacks only once in a long while. Pixie is having her first cough, but she seems to be going fewer and far between. It does sound a lot like asthma. My vet says it's not that big of a deal, just SOUNDS hideous. They actually did an xray on Peanut that showed where his trachea is narrow, which causes the problem. A lady who sat by me in the waiting room one time, who used to show and raise Yorkies said that she had a Yorkie with collapsing trachea once, and she had surgery done on him to fix it. I think I would wait to see how bad it would be before I jumped into that. Like I said, once we stopped the vicious coughing cycle, I can't even remember the last time he had a cough. Anyway, hope Boonie gets well soon!

Have been doodling out JackieMayaPoohBear in hearts lately? Testing it out in sigs? -
A suggestion if you decide not to risk ticking them off is, maybe suggest to your mom that a good craft when the little girl comes over to play would be a Xmas bed for Puppy (You could probably make one pretty cheap with some fleece, that seems to always be on sale at my local fabric store, at least). That way the puppy will at least have some place to snuggle. Or maybe a Nylon collar and some super easy cross-stitching the dogs name, to put in place of the prong collar? It's a sneaky way of getting the dog better treatment, teaching the kid at least about taking care of the puppy, and your mom might be able to pump the kid for info about any further problems with the puppy's care.
So, ahem, when are you going to pick him up?
   There is quite a resemblance. In my puppy kindergarten class there is a mini australian shepherd that is such a cutie! Named Gypsy, which is just perfect for her. -
Some people have had trouble posting messages with the word c - a - t in them. It doesn't seem to happen all the time to all people, just sometimes. Now people have taken to using a @ instead to avoid any problems.

Hahaha, yeah... ummm ok, maybe 84 in! You could be right on the quick thing too! It did stop up right away. Luckily he's running around on his foot no prob! I'll probably make sure to clean his feet every day for a little bit to head off any infection.

My Mom ordered some shades for our living room, and the big (84 ft. long!) packages have been leaning up against a wall waiting for us to put them up. Well today, I moved them so I could vacuum, and when I went to get the second one the first one fell over on Peanut! He cried out, and I grabbed him to cuddle, calm down, and check out if he was hurt. He seemed ok, but still freaked out, when he went to roll out of the baby hold I had him in, I noticed I had blood on my shirt!!! :o :o :o So then I grabbed him again and checked him over again, and it turned out his back foot (which I had checked first) was bleeding in between the toes. So, he must have busted a quick or something. The bleeding stopped really quick, maybe 2 minutes after it happened. I wiped the area with a damp paper towel, and fussed with his foot and leg... wiggled all his toes, and moved his leg through a whole cycle, and he was fine with that, and he's walking on it alright as well. I called my vet, and they said that I was right, and it was probably a toenail, and to watch for renewed bleeding, swelling, Peanut messing with the foot, and if he starts not walking on it. Now the packages are laying flat down on the floor! Don't want that to happen again! And Peanut is cuddling with me.

I'm not sure how long he's been there. I only had the garage door open overnight the first time, and when I went out the next morning heard a meowing and found him, and he took off out of the garage. Then I haven't heard him since then, until today. I accidentally left the garage door open last night. Then I got up this morning and took my mom to work, closing the garage door as we left. Then I came home and parked outside of the garage, and left the door shut. When I went out to grab the vacuum, Peanut had a little frenzy, and I realized the c@t was in there again. I don't think he's been living out there, because Peanut only freaked today... and Peanut's been out in the garage before this, and the door is usually closed. Maybe I should open the door for a little bit and see if he takes off for home? I don't want to drive him out though, if he doesn't have any other warm(ish) place to go. I'm actually going to the HS tomorrow to do some volunteer training, so I could take him in if he's still here tomorrow. My Mom's freaking out, because she thinks the c@t is going to adopt us. She's waaaay not a c@t person, because of the last one we had being totaaly insane and a biter. I told her I won't adopt the cat, but I'm not going to just chase him out into the cold.
-
Ok, thanks for the advice! I have set some dog food and a bowl of water out in the garage, but I don't think he's come back out of hiding. Now he's on a suitcase on some shelves out there. He doesn't seem too worked up or anything. He doesn't have a collar. I just hope he's warm enough out there! I'll do a little door to door tonight.

Help! I have a c@t living in my garage right now. He or she was in there before, curled up in some foam that I have for upholstery. I left the garage door up one night, and the next morning, we heard a meowing, so I looked around for where it was coming from, and startled him off before I could catch him. I just went out into the garage to get the vacuum, and P&P joined me to grab it, but when I called them to come back into the house, Peanut started barking at the garage and wouldn't come back in. So, I went investigating again, and there he was! This time, the garage door was closed though, so I he was trapped in there. I don't know if I should try to pick him up, (would that be safe?) but, it's cold in the garage and I'd like to get him inside to warm up. (into a bathroom where Peanut couldn't try to attack the foul creature. That's in Peanut's POV, not mine!) Anyway, could anybody help? Maybe I could take some water and dog food for the c@t to munch on? I'll be going door to door in my 'hood, there's only about 10 houses out here, to see if somebody's missing him, then I'll call AC. Or, if anybody else has any suggestions? Help!

Hopefully that nutter doesn't complain to Dogster that you've stolen her dog!
