Pixie was doing pretty well keeping away from her stitches, but last night she was licking them a lot. Plus she kind of walks three legged, because she uses her back left foot to scratch at them while she walks. This is what they look like now: So, what should I do? Do I try to get her into the vet tomorrow? Does she need an ecollar? Do they sell baby ecollars at Petco? Do I put something on it? Help!

Well she made it through alright. She's very quiet and cuddly last night and this morning. I've been having to carry her around, because she usually likes to come with me everywhere in the house, but I couldn't have her going up/down the stairs or off the couch.

The girl who sits behind me at work has a 1 year old dog (outside dog, unless the temp gets below 20F), I don't know the breed. She says she's going to have to take her in to the vet, because his eyes are very red, especially after he eats. She thinks he might be getting too much protein, and is allergic to his food. Is this possible?

Well, I dropped Pixie off at the vet this morning. Court, Peanuts testicles had not dropped, so that could also explain the pricing. I'm not really all that put out by the cost, and I feel comfortable with this vet and laser surgery. Plus Pixie is so sensitive as it is (poor girl cried all night when she got her last set of puppy shots), so anything that could cause less swelling and quicker healing is good!

Basically they use a laser scalpel instead of a standard one.
WHY LASER SURGERY? Less pain-The laser seals nerve endings as it "cuts," so your pet may require less anesthesia during the operation, reducing the risk of complications. Pain after surgery is also reduced. Less bleeding-The laser seals small blood vessels during surgery. Less swelling-Laser energy does not crush, tear or bruise because there is no physical contact with the tissue. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR MY PET? Reduced risk of infection-The laser sterilizes as it removes diseased tissue, killing bacteria that cause infection. Precision-The laser can remove unhealthy tissue without affecting or removing surrounding healthy tissue. Quick return to normal activities-Healing is rapid and there is less post-operative discomfort. Laser procedures reduce the trauma to your pet, improving healing, and may shorten the time spent in the veterinary hospital.
I got the bloodwork done just because it was there and I was all worried that something could go wrong. I don't think I'll get it done for Pixie though, now that I know that it's not really necessary. I read somewhere that it can cost $100 more for a laser spay, so I bet that's it. I don't really know of any other vets that I'd go to, since I trust this one I'm at now, as opposed to the crappy place I went before. And I prefer to stick with the laser too, as it's supposed to have less chance of complications, and less swelling and inflamation and so less discomfort, quicker healing, etc.

Were yours laser surgeries? I probably still have the bill somewhere, I'm just not sure where... From what I remember, the bill included the laser surgery, anesthesia, after surgery medicines, pre-surgery bloodwork, removal of a bunch of baby teeth...

I made an appointment for Pixie's spay. I am cash poor right now, so I asked how much it would cost. Peanut's neuter cost $400-ish, including a laser neuter, a blood test for $40-$50, and removing some baby teeth for probably another $50. So that would leave just the surgery/anesthesia at about $300. The nurse said that Pixie's surgery at about $232. Can that be right? I had assumed it would be more for Pixie than for Peanut? Any ideas?

I am working on sit/stay and down/stay with the puppers. Pixie thinks she is too smart for me though. With sit stay I kind of wave a treat around in front of them to see if they'll stay even if I'm "baiting" them. For down though, since I just started that, I'm giving them treats every couple of seconds, with the plan being to lengthen time and distance etc after they get it down. Now Pixie's figured this all out, and when I have her do sit/stay, if I don't give her treats fast enough, she'll do down, 'cause she thinks I'll start giving her all sorts of treats...

I have a Maltese. Her name is Pixie. In my totally unbiased opinion, I agree that Maltese are super cute.

I said 1-2 months, but Peanut really only humped one to two days. He did it when he was only about 10 wks old and I had first enrolled him in doggy day care. But I just nudged him off me and said NO, and he stopped after a few tries.

Awesome! I like the top one best.

Sizzle, I don't think I've ever seen any dobes at petco... I don't get there often enough, I guess! Plus, I've only had P&P since May and August, so you might have been away at school for half the time since I got them? But we have definitely met Misty! My Mom is totally in love with her. The first time we met her, Jay had had her hop up on top of a stack of dog food they had in the aisle (about 4 feet up, I'd say), and stay, while he walked around the store and kept her there. Mom thought she was a dog statue at first!

Sizzle, Gigi lives in Marion, and I live in Cedar Rapids. Looks like we got hit just as bad as you!

How about Rolf from the Muppets/Muppet babies?

Yikes. that's like 75-85 F! People can be so stupid. Hopefully at least having their mistake pointed out to them over the loudspeaker will have knocked some sense into them, even if the police and rspca can't do much.

Unless issues arise I will DEFINATELY allow my dog on the bed because at this rate it doesn't look like I'll find a man for awhile and my dog will be my cuddle buddy. :D Plus I LOVE being very warm at night...
Sounds like you and Dex were made for each other. Give me your address and I'll ship Dex to you.   He always bogarts any warm spot on the couch or bed. If Christine or I get off the couch, you can count on the fact that Dex will sneak up onto the warm area. He's a tricksy little hobbit. Um, to answer the original question, we sometimes let Dex sleep on the bed. He is just too much of a hog, always stretching his legs, so we only let him sleep if its a quick nap for an hour or two. He used to try to sneak onto the bed in the middle of the night. Kira does not like sleeping, or even getting on the bed for that matter. She gets hot quickly, and does not like body heat all up on her. In fact, she prefers the coolest area of the room or house.
Peanut is a cuddler, but Pixie isn't. Peanut likes to sleep all over me, on my chest if i'm on my back, on my legs if I'm on my stomach, draped over my waist if I'm on my side. If I set him off of me, he will cuddle into my side. Pixie will sleep on me for a little bit, but I think she gets hot too. Luckily (for the dogs, not for me! ) there is plenty of extra room in my bed for sleeping wherever they want to. Peanut and Pixie definitely always get to sleep in my bed. I actually got a set of steps from Target so that they can get up to the bed by themselves. That way if I'm in bed and they hear something and jump of to give a little warning Wuff, I don't have to pick them back up onto the bed. They both learned how to use the steps this week, YAY!

Kat, that water in a syringe thing is an excellent idea. I might start doing that with Peanut to desensitize him.
-
Man, I don't know if I can be of much help, since I still have a such a hard time with meds for Peanut. I just cuddle cuddle cuddle, and ask if I can look at his teeth, then squirt (I don't know if you could get a syringe for this from the vet?) in behind the teeth. Pixie had amoxycillin which apparently is quite yummy, so now she likes the syringe. Maybe you could try mixing with a small bit of wet dog food, or cut up hotdogs?

What breeds are considered "pit bulls"?

They left out chihuahuas, and greyhounds, and... -
i'm surprised that neither of them has showed up on dogomania yet to "set you guys straight". lol
I can't tell you what a smile this put on my face, thinking about "the bullnese guy" vs dogomania, fight to death.
