what exactly is scruffing? -
So I'm working with Buck on learning the "pick it up" command and he's coming along pretty well. He will pick up the toy and hand it to me when I tell him to pick it up. So far we have only used his toys as the object to pick up mostly because he likes picking them up and is used to doing so. Yesterday I decided to try another object and see if he would do it. I put a plastic coat hanger on the floor (it was handy at the time, there was no real reason for choosing this particular object)and asked him to pick it up. He ran away and came back with a toy! So, I thought we were doing pretty well but I think it's going to be hard to get the idea out of his head that he needs to go find a toy. I think the main problem is that he never picks up things that aren't "his". He knows which toys are ok for him to play with and I don't think it has ever occured to him to play with "our" toys. He just leaves everything else alone. And obviously I don't want him to play with other objects, just pick them up. So this is going to take a lot more work. I couldn't stop laughing when the funny guy came running back with a rope toy dragging on the floor! He looked so proud too!
"I think this just goes to the basic unpredictability of certain breeds of dogs," he said. "The dog was frenzied. The whole thing lasted about 45 seconds.''
care to explain this?
Every dog, even a Lab and a Foxhound, can now be shot for getting loose....
It is too bad. I wonder what law enforcement's definition of aggression is...? I would hope they would send an officer who is experienced with dogs. Maybe someone from the K-9 unit.

I thought Gunny Bunny's post was logical and well thought out. While I don't agree with some of it, I don't think it sounds like the work of a troll. It is generally ineffective to "ban" anything. Can you think of any one thing that has been banned that is still not readily available? Alcohol was banned. That was a horrible fiasco. Illegal liquor was even stored in the basement of capitol hill so that congressman could still have it. Many drugs are banned. If I wanted to go buy some right now, I know exactly where I could get it and the chances of being caught are few. Prostitution is banned. I see hookers on the street every night. It sounds like a simple solution to a difficult problem, but it just doesn't work.

ooohh... nerve damage can be pretty tricky to heal. -
Maybe in some cases, but Prozac isn't really a super cheap drug. I worked at a pharmacy. It wasn't incredibly expensive but I don't think that someone who didn't care about their dog would regularly spend that kind of money to help a dog they didn't care about. They would be more likely to take it to a shelter or put it down.

wow, that is pretty distressing. I am definately not qualified to give any advice but I will pray for the little fella. Sounds like the owner is doing everything she can though.
-
Sounds like a lot of fun :-) Good luck to you both :kciuki:

I voted :-) That is really a cute picture! :biggrina:

I think it is one of those things that some people can't understand using until they have a dog that needs it. It can be effective when other attempts at management have been exhausted. I've never needed to use it, but I have seen dogs that have benefited from its use.

Wow, that's a good one

wow... $200 for a spay? Is it because she is an no longer a puppy and has had a litter? That seems like a lot for spay. I've never had an older dog spayed before though so maybe it's more expensive...
-
that is awesome! I've never heard of doing that but I'm definately going to try it as soon as we get enough snow :-) Thanks for informing me. I am so psyched to try it out
-
We had a lovely amount of snow here but it got warm today and it is starting to melt!! Buck loves the snow, I don't know why they get so excited... What is a quicy?

Wow, way to go Hippo! :D

You could build him a little ramp inexpensively enough. Just go to the hardware store and buy some wood and nails or staples and cover it with carpet. It would be a nice weekend project :-)

Be really careful trusting someone else with your dog. Especially someone you don't know really well! A lot of unforseen circumstances can arise and you want to be sure that whoever is looking after your pet knows how to handle them. A month is a long time and a lot can happen. I've never boarded a dog at a kennel but I would not hesitate to do so if the need arose. They have the facilities and knowledge to do a competent job. You could call your vet to get a good recommendation. You will have to get immunization records from the vet anyway in order to board. ( I think) If you are totally set against a boarding kennel, do you know anybody that could come stay at your house? It's easier on the dog if he/she doesn't have to be relocated to another home that may even have strange dogs living there.

I know what you mean. My standard poodle never liked to play with toys. He would play with a ball now and then but that was it. Buck LOVES toys and it's kind of neat! He loves to play tug 'o' war with ropes :-) I didn't know that we had any petsmarts in Michigan... But I don't get over to flint very often

Are you going to look into adopting her again? Poor girl has had it rough so far it sounds like.

I have one black lab/pointer mix named Buck :-) He's the sweetest dog in the world! Found him abandoned in Kentucky

I like the regular wide collars. That's all I've ever used on Buck. I know a lot of people like the martingale type. I don't know anything about them though.
