I have a Japanese Spitz pup that has that beautiful white, fluffy puppy coat. I like to keep her looking nice, but she loves to dig, and we have really black dirt, so when it is rainy here (as it has been a lot lately!!) just going outside gets her real dirty. I don't want to bathe her too much, so am wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Do the shampoos made specifically for white dogs really help, and, if so, which ones are the best? How about the doggy wipes, would they help for in-between, and are they the same as baby wipes, or are they significantly different? Thanks for all your help!! :)

Ickle - What is CC? I am confused  Also - can you tell me anything specific about this breed? Should her fur stay fluffy (like a Samoyed) as she gets older, or will it be longer and lay flatter? Thanks for all your help.

I am almost ashamed to say it on here, because I know how many of you feel, but I answered an ad in the newspaper. We went to "look", and of course, you know how that works, this little girl went right up to my daughter and started trying to play with her hair, and we were hooked! Both parents were there, so I know she's a purebred, but have no papers. Now that I know the AKC doesnt register them, I wonder, could we have one that is registered in the US? All dogs that I've had that have been purebreds have been registered with the AKC, so I guess I just thought that was it for the US.

Thanks so much, everyone. Here in the US< all we ever hear about is the AKC. I knew I'd get an answer here!!! Thanks for the info on the book, Ickle, I will definetly look for it. She is such a sweetie, we are all really happy with her so far.

JackieMaya I know this is an old post, but I just came across it, and after seeing your pics, I knew you prob hadn't solved your dilemma yet. Have you thought of a cattle watering tank? YOu can get them in many sizes, both in plastic/hard rubber and in metal. They are not as wide across, but much deeper than a pool, and very sturdy. I see you are in MN, like me, so you could check Runnings, FleetFarm, or maybe even Menards. Or, any other farm supply store you have in your area of MN. (by the way, where are you? I'm by Hutchinson)

Ok, guys, can you help me? You know I have this little Japanese Spitz named Maya that I already love - here's the prob. When I looked up the breed, Dogo had a section on it, but the AKC doesn't list them at all. They list the Finnish Spitz, but no other kind. What is up with that? Isn't the J.Spitz a breed?? Thanks for any help.

Here's my Japanese Spitz Maya - I think they look a lot alike!! Maya's parents had longer hair, though, and not quite so fuzzy Your baby is sure beautiful!!! I had a schnauzer stolen from our house when I was 13 - I know the pain of never knowing what happened to her. It's so sad.
-
My sister had a schnauzer that very definetly said Hello (sounded like "re-row", kind of like Scooby Doo!) and I Love you My cat talks to me,and I totally understand her, so I talk back. My husband thinks we are both nuts!!
Mommacat, your avatar photo is SO cute!
THANKS!! We are really excited about this dog, she is such a sweetheart, and seems to be quite smart and tries to please. I have a great pic of her with my daughter, is it ok to post a pic like that on here, too? I'll try to get some more posted of her.
-
I did this as a youth with 2 different schnauzers, and had a wonderful time. My younger dog never got out of the puppy stage and didn't do very well, but my older one was county champ and we competed at state. Great experience, and what an ego booster as a kid to show off how well trained my dog was compared to other adults dogs!!!
-
You guys forgot a couple of main types. Bichon Frise - I know someone who is highly allergic and that is the only kind that works for him. How about Schnauzers? They are teriffic pets, have hair, don't shed, and my former roomate had no allergy problems with my Alphie (years and years ago, I still miss him!). Also, they come in 3 sizes, so you have more of a choice. The "doodle" mixes you listed are not really shed-free; the poodle part is shed-free, but not the part that is mixed. You 'd be better off with a plain poodle than one of those mixes. I believe lhasa apso and shi tzu's are also shed-free, but I knew a lhasa mix that shed really bad! Hope this helps
Wait, didn't you have the Yellow Lab-Goose?
Yes, Rowie, we do. He is mainly a hunting dog, so doesn't spend much time with the family. I dont' really agree with that, but my husband and the guys that helped him train Goose for hunting say that if you make too much of a pet out of them, they don't hunt well.
You can have something to baby for when your babies are grown up!)
That is exactly what I'm thinking, Sanvean!!! I also wouldn't be against getting a real big dog, but we travel a lot and stay with relatives, and I'm not sure they'd be willing to house us and a giant dog, too!! Anyway, we are very happy so far with this little pup, and I will post pictures on the picture thread as soon as I can. That's her in my avatar.

Thanks, K, for all the info. After I finally decided that was what we needed, my husband decided we needed a bit bigger dog, one that could run and play with the kids, and be better around our extended families dogs (they are all labs, setters, retrievers). So, we did some more searching, and ended up with a Japanese Spitz puppy!! She is the cutest thing ever, as soon as I can figure out how, I will post some pics. I still think I will eventually get a Japanese Chin, they just seem SO COOL! I think my husband just likes the bigger dogs, he really wants a Dane, Mastiff, or Newfoundland!!
-
I agree - please make sure they don't breed. My sister-in-law just had a batch of Boston Terrier puppies from a brother and sister (she didnt' mean to, she didn't watch them closely enough). One of them was born with a cleft pallate and died after 3 days - really heartbreaking for her children. Now they should be ready to go, but she has 2 that won't eat. Don't know if that has anything to do with the breeding, but I just know she's having problems. The worst part is, she has people paying $200.00 for these pups, they are inbred and won't have papers!! When people are willing to pay that much for a pup like that - I'm afraid she'll think it is a good idea and breed them again!! :(
-
My family and I recently went to a dog show to search for the "right" breed of dog for us. We are now strongly leaning towards a Japanese Chin or a Papillon. I have been searching rescue places, but can't find any near us. We would really like to get a puppy, as our children (7and9) have never experienced a puppy, and my oldest would like to do obedience training through 4-H in the next year or two. Does anyone have any insight for me about these dogs, and how they are in a home with 2 kids and a spoiled cat? We travel to visit family (by car) and also camp, so we need a dog that will be flexible. Also, does anyone know of a breeder in Minnesota or Western Wisconsin (or Eastern North or South Dakota, or Northern Iowa)? Thanks for any help!! :)

I like German names for German dogs, how about Fritz? I didn't get if it is a girl or a boy - could also use Greta, Hans, OR< being the chocoholic that I am - Hershey or Mocha would be great, too. Just a thought - Cappy (cappachino?)
