My border collie mix use to do the same thing. I'm still working with her, but she's a whole lot better. What I did was when we went on walks, I would bring along some really yummy treats, like cheese or bits of hot dog and when we would see another dog I'd get her to focus on me and the treats instead. Sound really happy while you're feeding the dog the treats, and try your best to keep her focused on you. Eventually he should learn that ignoring the other dog gets him rewarded. Also gentle leaders seem to help because you can control the dog's head. Good luck, I hope this helps some!

Please pass along to everyone!! Thanks! For many of you, this would not effect you, but AKC has a rule that deaf dogs can not compete in ANY show. There are many deaf dogs that are showing in obedience and agility. I personally trained and showed a deaf double merle sheltie. Misty earned her U-CDX, Canadan CD and CGC. UKC and Canada do allow deaf dogs to show in obedience and agility. There are some other avenues also, but I'm not famillar with them. This rule has been brought up to AKC to change it many times. They only vote on these type of rules every 4 years and the voting was this year. Again it did not pass. The breed clubs that are members of AKC are the ones doing the voting. The biggest club is the Dalmation club. They have in their rules that any member that has a deaf dog must put it down. This is also true for any rescue that is a member. If they rescue a dog and find out it is deaf, they have to put it to sleep. If they know ahead of time that it is deaf, they normally will not take it into the rescue. Since the breed clubs are the ones doing the voting, we have to go to them to change their rules/minds when voting on this again. Please go to the site listed below and sign the petition. We are trying to get 1,200 signatures as this is how many members the Dalmation club says it has. The person doing this does not have a deaf dog, she has been watching one train and thinks AKC needs to change this rule. She will then go to the other clubs and talk to them too. You may cross post this also. Thank You for signing. Pam Andress In loving memory of: U-CDX HIDEAWAYS EARLY MORNING MIST CAN CD, CGC http://www.petitiononline.com/deafdogs/petition.html

Wow everyone has great stories! I really don't know what started my love of dogs, but it started very young. When I was 4 years old everyday I would ask my mom if I could get a Dalmation. When I was 6, after 2 years of constant begging, my parents said we could get a dog. My dad had grown up with GSD's, but since I was still young and my sister was about 3 years old they wanted a smaller dog. So we got Midnight, a JRT, Toy poodle mix. She was a little black pundle of energy, and I loved her to death. Unfortunatly my time with her was short, we had barely had her a year when she got out of the yard. We searched for her until dark, and then gave in for the night. My dad sat out on the porch hoping she would come back, and she made it very close. Right as she was coming across the street back to our house a car came and hit her. My dad still gets very upset to think about that, it was a hard thing for him to see. He really loved that dog. My second dog was Cracker, a malamute/sheltie who knows what else mix. She's a sweetie, and now going on 8 years. And of course there's Abby, who's really my dream dog. She's a border collie akita mix. Abby honestly did come to us, I call her my little gift from God. She chased my mom's car down, and when my mom stopped and opened the door, she jumped right in. She's been with us ever since, and is with me nearly 24/7. I've never had a connection with my other dogs like the one I have with Abby. I can't even begin to explain what it's like, but I'm sure you all already know what I mean. As for my perfect breed, right now it seems to be the APBT. I've done a lot of research on them, and worked with some memoriable dogs through rescue. I love border collies and tollers to, but nothing can beat that pittie smile. :D
Sue Sternburg may not be perfect but, I have yet to see any better alternatives. :(
I don't think anyone here disagrees with temperment testing, surely it is something we NEED to do. BUT Sue's temperment testing, is pushing it. A lot. So many dogs that don't need to be put down are because many of her tests end up irritating the dog to the point where it has to lash out. And then she deems it "aggresive" and "unadoptable" after poking it with a rubber hand 20 times! What does she really expect? This lady is sick and needs to be stopped.
:x :( Please respond to Mr. Wilson and cross post. -------Original Message------- From: Gustafson, Paula Date: Monday, July 12, 2004 16:38:08 To: Caroline; atlantarescue@yahoogroups.com; spotsociety@egroups.com; georgia_dog_rescue@egroups.com; GApetrescue@yahoogroups.com Subject: [GApetrescue] Penny shot 13 times!! Send this b-stard to prison!! READ & FORWARD PLEASE DO NOT HIT REPLY. FOR INFORMATION, CONTACT: Colleenarn@msn.com Please distribute to everyone you know and media contacts. National attention could make a difference on how seriously cases like this are prosecuted everywhere. And please take a moment to send an Email to Deputy D.A Jeff Wilson at: JWilson@placer.ca.gov (placer.ca.gov) In Placer County, California on May 12, 2004, Dave Hovanec shot a retreating dog 13 times from the back because she had wandered into his driveway. The dog, Penny, was a highly socialized companion who had dug out from her fenced yard while her guardian was at work. Other neighbors in the area saw Penny loose that day, but did nothing because she was not bothering passers-by. Instead, Hovanec, who resides at 5752 Arrowhead Drive, Forrest Hill, CA, tel. no. 530.367.2725, called the local animal control agency. A unit was dispatched but Hovanec decided to shoot Penny, despite being told not to take action. Hovanec shot Penny thirteen times, with all bullet wounds to the rear of her body, indicating she was in retreat. According to Sheriff Detective Diana Stewart, Penny's bullet ridden body was found at the fence where she was trying to get back into her yard. Although the dog had not threatened or harmed anyone, Hovanec had threatened to shoot the dog previously. The detective has also interviewed Hovanec's son who denied that the dog had chased him that day, contrary to Hovanec's initial claims. Although Placer County Deputy District Attorney Jeff Wilson agreed to investigate for possible misdemeanor prosecution, he does not appear to be moving forward with the case. Deputy D.A. Wilson needs to know how serious animal abuse is, that it is linked to other crimes, and that laws protecting animals must be enforced. Jeff Wilson can be reached at (53 0) 889-7000 or JWilson@placer.ca.gov (placer.ca.gov) regarding report no. SO 04-7227. Please voice your concern that proper attention and priority be given to this matter. Penny's guardian writes: On May 12, 2004, I lost my best friend, and companion because my neighbor Mr. Dave Hovanec shot and killed my dog. He did so with not just one gun but two. Per the Placer County Sheriff, who took the report, he started with one gun and had his wife go in the house and get another pistol to finish Penny off. This incident took place in front of Hovenec's house at approximately 5:30-6:00 P.M. with his children there. He shot at Penny 13 times killing her with 8 bullets that remain in her, all on her backside. Penny was trying to get away and he continued to shoot her anyway. Penny was part pit bull and part boxer, Mr. Hovanec told me in November of 2003 he was going to shoot her. He didn't like the pit bull breed and made it perfectly clear. In November while Penny was on my property he tried to lure her over close enough to his property and attempted to shoot at her, missing and this was witnessed by Mr. Jerry Malone another neighbor. Not one other neighbor ever complained about Penny, only Mr. Hovanec. On the day of the fatal shooting, Penny had dug under my fence and into Hovanec adjacent driveway, but she had never threatened him or anyone else. Hovenac's son had called Hovanec at work, to tell him that Penny was out. Mr. Hovanec then called Placer County animal control to have Penny picked up. Hovenac then called 911 and said he was going to shoot Penny. 911 told him not to, and that an animal control unit had been dispatched, but he came home and shot her anyway. Initially, Hovanec claimed that Penny was chasing his son on his bike. But Hovanec's son told a Placer County Sheriffs detective that Penny was in the street watching, not chasing him. That s ame day another neighbor across the street was walking her two dogs and saw Penny loose on the street. When she passed with her dogs Penny did not even bark at them. Hovanec has since changed his story several times.
There are some large snakes kept as pets that can and have killed small children and adults. Again, responsibility is a must, especially when owning an animal with the potential to kill you. When posting an ad there, it asks you the type of animal it is, and it gives you a list to chose from. Most of the people with the 'wolves' were actually selling wolf hybrids, but they have to put 'wolf' down as the animal type, as there is no 'wolf hybrid' choice. Wolves do not make good 'pets' but wolf hybrids can make good pets. It all depends on how much wolf is in them and how experienced the owner is with keeping wolf hybrids. Only wolfdogs with very little wolf in them would have a chance of making a good pet for the average pet owner though. ~Seij
I can see where you're coming from, but I think you're missing the main point. IMO, we have to take extra care with wild animals. More so than with a dog or cat. Even just part wild, like the wolf hybrid. Just like that incident with Siggy and Roy with the tiger, I'm pretty sure they had hand raised that tiger. But it was still a wild animal, and Roy fully knew the risk he was taking and acknowleged(sp?) that when he was attacked. What I'm trying to say is EVEN IF a wolf is much different from a tiger, and even if it is wolf hybrids we are talking about, it still has that wild animal in it, and you can never truely tame a wild animal like DL has already stated. Therefore I don't think they should be legal for the normal citizen to own, as most of us wouldn't know how to properly handle one.

I'm glad to here someone else is a newbie at this, I've been considering fostering also. Like you, I've got nothing to do all day when I'm home, so it would be a good project. But the thing is my BC X doesn't get along well with all other dogs, and I'm not sure how she would react to bringing in a new animal. Plus we're going on vacation sometime in August, and I'm not sure how that works, do you board the dog or what? And like someone else said, once I go back to school I dunno if my mom will be willing to take care of it. :( But good luck Crazy. :D And keep the advice coming guys, it's helping me out too!

Abby does the same thing, she's about 42 lbs and has knocked my dad out cold. :o If she gets into one of her "zoomie" moods and starts running around, you better move cause she'll take you down! We call her a football player. Luckily she hasn't done it in a long while, and I can usually get her to slow down. Good luck with Beau!

I watch that show sometimes, but I've never seen that episode. Sorry I can't help more... maybe check out their web site?

I'll be cross posting this to my rescue group!
I have found myself having conversations with my dogs :o
You're not the only one. I talk to Abby constantly, ask her questions too. Like if I'm trying to decide between two things I'll ask her and which ever thing she sniffs first I go for. Abby also sleeps with me, no matter what. In fact I can't sleep unless she's in the room with me. I always give my doggies the end of the ice cream cones, and let them have the rest of the milk from my cereal.
The eye is the BEST trait of the border collie!! Even COAL has it! He can almost hypnotize ME when we're outside playing! He'll keep his eyes on me or the toy the whole time with such a fixating gaze!
Abby does the same thing, except more with food instead of toys.
I think there are good things about all different kinds of Border Collies. If it's true that a Border Collie from showing lines is less high strung and energetic than a working dog, than I think that sort would be better as a pet. Why try to get a working Border Collie if you're not going to work it?
I think that's a really good point Kendalyn.

Both my dogs respond to me putting on any sort of shoes (Even slippers). They both get up and watch to see if I'm going to go outside, and if I do head toward the door Abby does what I call her 'outside dance.' She pulls her ears back and bounces around all happy like, it's the funniest thing and it looks like she either has to pee really bad or is dancing. Let's see what else.... Abby knows what 'go night night' means and she'll go up to my bedroom (where she sleeps) when I say it. Oh! That reminds me, the word go. Both dogs look up whenever I say this, because it can be good or bad. Good: "Go for a walk?" "Go outside?" "Go night night" "Go to the park?" Bad: "Go to the vet" "Go for a bath" "Go to the doggie hotel (boarding kennel  ) "Go in the pen" and probably a lot more that I'm forgetting about. :P

Great article.
We got billions masquitos, can chance they can be ban?
Please let's! :x

Yep I'm in the same boat as most of you, I always find dog hair in my food I couldn't care less.
Sometimes on walks I'll let zebra drink out of my sport top water bottle and he gets it all slobbery, I just wipe it off and drink out of it anyways.
 I do that same thing!
I think the only strange thing about the scenario is that the pretzel didn't vanish the moment it touched Goo's back. LOL
I would say that sounds about right, if it was either of my dogs it woulda been gone before I even noticed I dropped it.

Teenagers torture, kill puppies with fireworks

 People that do things like that do seriously need help. It just boggles my mind that anyone would do that to a defensless animal.
