1. Hippo doesn't eat before 10 either--mainly because neither of us wakes up before 10  Even when she wakes up, she's not that interested in food--if we take a while to go to the park, she'll eat some of her kibble, but leave most of them for when she comes back... What's funny though is that if we take too long to leave, she goes to look outside the window to the park and the other dogs who're luckier and then she whines and comes to me to paw my leg--you know, a tap on my leg... And if I really don't get it, she gets her leash and starts chewing on it  And then she can tell when we put on the park clothes (probably because they smell like her and because we don't tell her to keep her slobber away from them :D ), and she starts running in circles between me and my husband to make sure that we're both ready so that we can leave... (Mind you, all the excitement happens if she has to work to get us ready, otherwise she's pretty calm about it  )
2. What about keeping him with you in the room at night (that is, if he's not crate trained)? he doesn't need to roam in the night, and you could tell him to stop whenever he starts anything evil in your room, right?
3. That's soooooooo funny... I like your girl  For some reason, even though she's been spayed before her first heat, guys still find my girl very attractive :D But wether it's a Great Dane or a JRT who's getting ideas, she just goes after them and tells them off! They're very perseverent though, and it seems to be with her in particular... She's cute, they must be able to tell that, too. I bet that's what happens to Sally too--they just find her extremely cute...
4.
He loves me tones too! hee hee! I'm afraid he may have seperation anxiety though! :o So, we'll have to start workin on that, get it all worked out ASAP!!!
It might be just puppyhood, Hazel... Hippo got very attached to us too when she was a tiny baby--when we had to leave her home alone for the first few weeks, she'd cry and whine, and I'd end up in tears too... But we took to walking her before leaving her alone (long walks), and she doesn't have any problems being alone now: she just sleeps for the whole time, and stretches sleepily when we get home. No complaints when we're leaving any more... So your pup might not develop into a dog with separation anxiety when he grows up.... But you're right, in a few days, you will have to start working on it.
5. What a cute face... and those innocent big eyes. And yes, the collar looks way too big for him. Coal seems like a perfect name for the little baby. I'm so happy for you... :BIG:
6. I'm guessing you mean things she likes, not cutting nails and cleaning ears  Well, sometimes I let her slobber all over my hands and face when I come home--that's how she likes to greet people (any and every people)--by giving big slopy kisses and taking your hand in her mouth. Now try to explain that to some people who're just convinced she's gonna just chew their hand off  And another thing I do for her--I offer my feet for her to sleep on (and let her get me out of bed every morning around 8-9 to move on the couch and sleep with her there for another hour or so)... Although, I must say, I like these things as muh as she does :P
7. can't see the pictures    How old is he? More details, more details...
8. Sorry to hear that, Marion. Hope both you and Rosie are well soon.
9. Yupiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! Have new desktop now! :banan: :banan: :banan: :banan: :banan: :laola: Thanks roo
10. I think mouse meant the bearcoat shar-pei... Here's a website, if you wanna take a look at the pictures: http://www.bearcoatsharpei.co.uk/ (click on Bearcoat Gallery)
11.
Shar-Pei's were never used for fighting. They were brought to the US under the MISCONCEPTION they were fighting dogs. They soon found out they were wrong.
Just to set things right here and tell you that I do know what I was saying about Shar-pei (although I agree I was probably off with the APBt and their owners--as I said, I don't own one, so I'm ready to admit that you, owners, know better about their instincts and the way they can come up no matter what you do)... Not that I care that much, but the Pei were shortly used for fighting in Hong Kong and China (true, not in the States), although, granted, not with much success :D "Beginning in the late 1950's, the center of the Chinese Fighting Dog history moved, or rather was driven, in to Hong Kong by the Chinese Communist. Prior to this time, Chinese Fighting Dogs were found exclusively in Macau (Macao). Even as late as 1974 clandestine dog fighting involving Chinese Fighting Dogs could still be found in this region." (from http://www.drjwv.com/newsletter/?view=5-1.php ) "Contrary to popular belief the Shar-pei WAS NOT BRED FOR FIGHTING, although they were used for fighting for a short period of time they had to be drugged or given wine to make them aggressive. Their original purpose was for Hunting,Herding and companionship for the Peasant Farmers of China." (from http://www.geocities.com/nswsharpeiclub/history.htm)
12. Little known like hell! I was talking about this in another post, but this--the fighting-- happenned for such a short time (for God's sake, they were farm dogs for hundreds of years before that, but everybody seems to have forgotten that part), and breeders nowadays breed them for good temperment and friendly attitude towards both people and other dogs. Belive me, the STUPID comments I had to listen to at the park with my Hippo (who's a mini Pei--about 30 lb) who's shown no signs of aggression ever... One particular lady angered me  she had a German shepard (fully grown) and said "Oh, you're gonna get hurt, these dogs are fighting dogs, it's their instinct to fight!" And lil Hippo was just sniffing hello her dog :o I guess there's no point in going into this again, but the labels that people tend to put on dogs make me mad :chainsaw1:
13. Sorry, bullygirl... I've read about it, so I thought it was true  I guess I was buying into the myth without being aware of it
14. I'm with Bullygirl here... I don't own a APBT, so don't jump on me too, but I hate to hear the comment "they were bred for fighting"--some of them might come from such lines, but do you think that Mary Smith breeding APBTs in California is actually making her dogs fight between them and breeds the better fighters?! C'mon, people... There are many breedres who breed just well-tempered APBTs... Yes, they are powerful dogs, have lock jaws, etc., but that doesn't make all of them unable to play with other dogs. I know one APBT who's been coming to my dog park since she was 3 mo, and she's the sweetest dog--never saw her getting in a fight, she plays with my dog... It's true, they like to wrestle both of them (and Goldens and some other breeds don't). So many of you might have had bad experiences, but that's not the breed, like eveyone's saying, it's the owners who get the APBTs and don't socialize them. And, Mary's Mama--you were saying how people wouldn't protest as much if you were lab-bashing instead... True. You know why? Because it's the groups that are always bashed, which are more sensitive about it. (You know, no white person would mind being called a "damn white"--and that's not because whites are more open minded--while a"damn negro" is a different thing). Just putting the things in perspective here...
15. Thanks, everybody. Courtnek, I think you're right: it must have been the ear popping that scared her, and made her cower in the corners all of a sudden. She seems to be doing ok now. She even got back at me today: she found a huge dead carp left by some stupid fishermen (I think) and she rolled in it. I almost had a nervous break down when I saw what she was rolling in--I don't eat any fish  , and I find it disgusting to look at even when it's not half decomposing  I brought the devil home and shampooed her really well, but now I still can't stand looking at her. I know it's just her damn instinct, but it grosses me out! :smhair2: :niedowiary: :lmaa: :nerwy: :scream7: :sabber:
16. What a beautiful doggie! But, obviously, I must like Pei A LOT
17. My Hippo (almost 8 mo now) is acting weird, I think... We went to the petshop this afternoon and got an ear cleaning solution (imRex), which I put in her ears afterwards--I've cleaned her ears before, but only with cotton balls... Well, she shook her head quite a few times, came to the kitchen to get her biscuit afterward, but she's still acting as if she's afraid of me (5 hours after it happened): she won't sleep close to me, she went to the other room to sleep (which she almost never does), and she looks scared when I touch her. A few times she even crouched in corners looking scared. She doesn't seem to be afraid of my husband... Do you think it's just the ear cleaning, or anything more serious to worry about? I can't think of anything unusal happenning to her today... And I have touched her all over--nothing seems to hurt her (no whinning). Maybe i put too much cleaning stuff and it hurt her???? Or what else?
18. Yeap, didn't know that about Bullmastifs (and I do find it interesting)... It also happens in Shar-pei (who only have either 1 inch coat or really short and rough coat) that from two really short haired dogs, breeders get dogs with coats like that of a Chow Chow :o Same reason, recesive gene (that's what I've read).
19. Serves you right for staying up so late! I've just become regular, too 8)
20. (I love these little emotioncons)
21. YES!!! I have all these 'proper' songs that I've changed the words to (and kept the tune)--like "Puff the magic dragon" became "Popo (another name for Hipo) the magic dragon,/ lived by the sea," or "Little angel" became "Little Popo, tiny Popo, go to sleep." My husband can even play on the guitar the dragon one  And she sits and listens to us. What a bunch of lunatics we are :cunao: Also, there's an Elvis song: "You walk like an angel/You talk like an angel/ But I got wise:/ You're the devil in desguise." Well, this is HER song :Dog_run:
22. Sorry, Shannon, I was answering to something I thought you've said (didn't realize you didn't mean that). And what was off topic was me talking about kids... That said, I still can't see what was uncivil about my reply, and really why the threats... I don't think this is a mafia group here and I don't think it matters who knows who... And anyone should be able to get contradicted--that's just the soul of conversation. But I'm getting off-topic again, sorry guys. On the topic of table scraps--I completely agree that people shouldn't be feeding all kinds of crap to their dogs. It sure feels as nice giving them carrots, or a piece of banana when you're eating some (fruits and veggies are pretty much the only kind of human food that Hippo usually gets--and she appreciates it all the same). And one last decadent thing I forgot to mention: last night she also had a little bit of caviar
23. Shannon, just wanted to say that I really don't think children should "obey commands," but should rather be encouraged to think for themselves. But hey, that's just me, and it's off the topic anyway... What I really wanted to tell you guys is that Hippo doesn't usually get any table scrapes (and never when we're eating), but last night we had our Romanian orthodox Easter: me being Romanian, and husband being mixed-up catholic Canadian  we celebrate both Easters--the more holidays the better :drinking: And to keep the good tradition, we had our big Easter dinner after midnight. Our Hippo bbay couldn't understand why we're eating in the middle of the night and she was looking at us with eyes half closed 8) But she had her Easter meal too (lamb and mashed potatoes) and loved it--didn't find it too late for herslef to eat either. And because we all went to sleep late last night (her included), this morning she only woke me up at 10 to move on the couch with her (usually she wakes me up around 8, and then we sleep toghether on the couch for about 2 more hours  ). I guess she had a big celebration last night...
24. I kept showing my husband pictures of Pei--all kinds of Pei--and we said how much they looked like a mini hippopotamus. And we decided, when we get our dog, that she'll be named Hippo(po). So we had a name for her about a year before we actually got her :buzi:
25. I guess I have a :lilangel: When I wanna do any mouth wrinkle cleaning (which she doesn't really like) or ear cleaning, I tell her to lay down... And she does! She puts up with anything, and then goes to the kitchen to get a biscuit :) Only hard thing is trimming nails, when my husband has to hold her, and I cut them. When she was tiny enough I could do it alone, but now she struggles...
