1. Just wanted to add that even dogs who've been fixed before their fist heat still have this kind of behaviour--mine isn't doing it, thanks Dog, but there was a lady in the park who was telling me that her female dog (spayed before first heat) is humping her dog bed :o , and that she's called her vet who said that it's behaviour she's learned from other dogs probably...
2.
I also bought a baby gate to stop the dogs going into the hall way coz when someone knocks on the front door it`s chaos...the dogs go crazy. But Laylah`s figured out how to undo that and open it too
Speaking of baby gates, I really don't understand how it works with some dogs :D When Hippo was about 3 months (short-legged tiny baby), we went to see my in-laws, who set up baby gates to keep her in the kitchen. Now that worked fine, as long as I was in there. If I left the kitchen, lil hippo would jump OVER the baby gate :o to follow me. And I still don't understand how she could do that, considering that, at the time, she'd get on the couch, and whine to be taken off because she was afraid to jump off  (needless to say the couch isn't as tall as a baby gate) As for doors, she figured that the bathroom door, if it's closed but not locked, can be pushed open (with her big hippo head)!
3.
Oh that's soo good! Dosn't it feel sooo good when your furkids are good?! I hope you gave Hippo a treat for being so well behaved! :P :D
Yes! and lots of hugs and kisses
4. I wanna tell you all what a wonderful doggie I have: she was so well-behaved today, I couldn't believe it! :o Usually when we have someone coming over to our apartment, she goes insane--she's so excited that she jumps on people, pulls on their clothes, hands, feet. And I don't mean only when they get in and she greets them, but for the whole time--to the point that everybody finds it a nuisance that we can't talk in peace and I have to hold her or keep telling her "off"... So, for that good reason, we haven't been having too many visitors :-? But we had two friends coming over today, and she was soooooo good. I couldn't believe it! She greeted them, but stopped bugging them afterwards and just went to sleep. When they went over to her to pet her, she was happy, and rolled over for a belly rub, but no more spastic jumping to lick everybody's nose! When I was just starting to think that she is plainly evil, she proved to be such a wonderfully well behaved doggie. I'm sooo proud of her 8) (i just hope it lasts  )
5.
It might be a good idea to see if your sister-in-law will bring the kids to your home for a socialization/manners sessions.
Impossible :-? She lives in Germany, and is only visiting now for a few weeks (staying at her parents, 3 hours away from us)...
6. Well, we'll have to go see my sister-in-law and her kids (age 2 and 4), and I was wondering what I should do with Hippo... Problem is that, although she's been very well socialized (brought to the town, and stores and park every day of her life), we didn't have any friends or relatives with kids, so she never saw any small kids for a longer time. She's met plenty in the street, but she still gets very excited when she sees them (not to mention hear them screeching), and wants to jump on them to lick their faces  Now the problem is that we'll be seeing my nephews only for a day--so is there any point in me trying to train Hippo while we're there, or she won't learn anything and I'll just be asking too much of her? She learned her commmands really fast, but she's very puppish and hyper, and I don't know if I'd ever be able to control that... If you think that it's worth a try, and that we should bring her over for the day (I could leave her with a friend if not), what are the things I should be doing to train her out of her jumping-licking face? I know not to leave her alone with the kids, and I'm also thinking of keeping her on a leash at all times (to avoid kid taking off screaming, and her running after him and knockig him over)... Anything else you can think of?
7. So many nicknames, and she's always changing them... Hippo, also called: --the Popo Dragon (from when she was a puppy from hell and bit anything moving when she wanted to play) --Hippo Bagons (the bagons are the haflings in The Lord of the Rings) --cutie patootie, cutie pie --bebe (which means little baby in Romanian) --Hippo the double-nosed reindeer (at Xmas) --little monster (for obvious reasons--like rolling in every dead thing she can find  , for scaring the people by jumping up although she knows she's not supposed to) --little devil, or damn devil (as case may be) --(silly) goose because she can be really, really silly --wrinkle face, wrinkle miracle, wrinkle beauty --Hippo the gorilla dog (because she uses gorilla tactics in approaching the dogs at the park: she lays down and then jumps up to them to surprise them) --monkey-dog (because she's a cheeky monkey) Hmmm... I think I'll stop here--not bacause I'm done, but I don't seem to remember any more at the moment
8. Congratulations! He's amazing! I love Great Danes too--they're so elegant...
9. very evil indeed
10.
I understand about the freezing cold weather, but isnt it worth the 26 dollars/6months to just keep the furbaby on the meds and not have any question of an infection?
It's not the money... This is the policy that the whole province of Ontario has, it's not a personal (uninformed) choice. Frankly, since it's scientifically proven that there can be no mosquitos during those months (and that it's only through mosquitos that the heartworm can be transmitted), why would I want to burden my dog's immune system with unnecessary drugs?
11. Hey Marble, I love Dresden (Lady too)! She looks so fit... The marking on the legs made me think of Pointer mix. Whatever the mix, she's adorable
12.
I'm grounded and suspended from school for two days. Our school is on a work to rule thingie where we cant stay after school to ask for help and our trip to ottawa was cancelled, just so the teachers and the union can get more money. Also our graduation cerimony (just grade 8 but still) is cancelled as well. so about 50 grade 8's in the school had a protest and refused to enter the school this Friday. All day we just stood outside with our signs. the cool this is we were on 3 different news channels, in the newspaper, and on a radio station. The principal suspended every one. I really don't think its fair but what can you do? I'm still allowed on the comp though :D
Luckychaos, you should be congratulated not grounded 8) I love people ready to defend 'lost' causes, even if they know they're already lost. It's the protest that counts, not its results
13. Is "prone to accidents" an euphimism you guys are using for "little devil always getting himself/herself into trouble"?
14. Yeap, spayed before first heat (I know that their heat can trigger fever episodes, but can't be that with her). Saw the vet today... He said the Pei he'd seen with Swollen Hock Syndrome had a big swelling--but I've read that not all dogs get swollen hocks with their fevers. He's not convinced she's had an FSF episode and said that even if she did there isn't much we can do--which I kinda knew  So the conclusion is: if it ever happens again bring her in right away for the vet to see exactly how she's acting... Meanwhile, since I think that it was FSF (the vet didn't have any other explanation for the fever), I'll get in touch with the holistic vet sometime soon and see what he thinks.
15. No, mouse, he's not really an expert, that's why I was trying to do my research before we see him. we're going to see him tomorrow and see what he says... She didn't have very high fever, so somehow that made me worry less. But still... we'll see how it goes at the vet's...
16. Sorry, but this post is only for Pei people, as I suspect FSF, which only occurs within our breed... I think my baby just had an episode of FSF
17. :o :D Are you sure it's the same dog? Very cute ears: Rosie the flying dog?
18.
Yeah, I'm paranoid right now. I left Kato out in the house today since he seems to have gotten over his hormone induced freakout and has been a good doggy. I gave him a speech before I left about not chewing up my china cabinet and windowsills. He cocked his head so I'm sure he understood the whole message and not just blah-blah-blah Kato blah-blah NO blah-blah-blah-blah. Please be asleep, please be asleep...
 When we fist got Hippo and she was such a puppy-devil, I made her watch with me a program called "Dogs with Jobs" (I'm not sure, but I think it's just on a Canadian channel), and I've explained to her that if she destroys anything in the apartment, she's gonna have to go get a job and buy us a new one! Seems to have worked: she didn't destroy anything... I'm sure she realized that lazying around is much better than having a job...
19. Hey, Holz, I just realized that I, too, have a (almost) nose-to-nose picture 8) from lack of a second dog, one has been substituted with a teddybear
20. Sorry I confused your girls, Marion  Yeap, if Rosie's the English setter, I can see she's not that happy to be in. She doesn't like the 'great outdoors' that much, does she? No wood-bridge crossing, no steps, no water, and no walking please  I like her, she could be me :evilbat:
21. Isn't Rosie the one who in the water in 2 pictures? How did you do it? :) Don't tell me it's all in the camera angle!
22. Oh, such beautiful pictures... very beautiful girls! I love the ones in the water--I can't wait until Hippo will get into the water (I'm hoping once it gets warmer, she'll go in)... they look so funny when they're all wet 8)
23. I already went and looked at all your pictures on woofit  And yes, I love the one nose to nose especially. Very cute dogs... Is the Irish Wolfhound as big as the Shepherd (sorry, I can't remmeber who's Holz and who's Boomer)? I thought they were supposed to be bigger--I remember reading somewhere that the Wolfhound is one of the biggest dogs... Just curious.
24. Is it coughing-retching? I'm thinking it might be kennel cough--which wouldn't be anything to worry about... You just bring him to the vet and he'll be put on antibiotics--so the cough will get better and disappear in a week... My pup got this stuff (the kennel cough) as a reaction to her vaccine. Imagine... Anyway, that's my guess... try to bring him into the vet's.
25. Cowgirl, in a cold environment (I mean, really cold--freezing) the mosquitos die when everything freezes over, so there is no need to continue giving heartworm medication--that's what my vet says... (no mosquitos, no way of transmitting the disease).
