1. Bowlinguals have been proven to work. TAKARA has a great rep right now. The translations are really accurate. Some of them are really obvious, but others aren't. For example, if a dog barks at strangers aat the front door, do you know what they're thinking? Some dogs may be frightened, protective, angry that they've stepped into their territory, and actually, some want the strangers to play with them. in cases like that, it's really interesting. There's a website, http://www.takaratoys.co.jp/bowlingual/ but it prolly won't help if you can't read Japanese.
2. OK, I don't know what happened, but my post got put in twice. And what's weird is that egg's post is right between them. What the heck? Huh? I'm confused... I'm such a computer clutz... Anyways, I agree with Egg. Japan is a big pet country. The people know so much about their pets and their products are great. They have doggie bakeries, cafes, and hotels all over the place. Unfortunately, Japan don't have strict laws about the import of animals. In a pet store, besides the usual, there are jelly fish, 1 inch turtles, 3 feet fish, aligator turtles, oopah loopahs (sp?), stag beetles, chipmunks, squirrels, prairie dogs, skunks, ground hogs, shickens, roosters, ravens, raccoons, and even MONKEYS! It makes me sooo sad. EDUCATION is a must to rid IGNORANCE. "The earth does not belong to us. We belong to the earth."
3. Poofy, first of all, I've never had a guinea pig, and my point DEFINITELY was not that raising dogs is the same thing as raising guineas. That's nice that pet stores buy their small animals from breeders, but that's definitely not all pet stores! I don't care where they came from. Have you ever been to pet stores and seen their animals housed improperly. There are foul odors coming from the cages, too many of them are housed together, and they give their animals water in a food dish, not a water bottle (a definite no no). I've had 6 hamsters, 5 mice, 2 gerbils, 12 frogs, 6 hermit crabs, 4 turtles, and 3 snakes in the past six years, so I know how to house small animals. Not to mention that some pet stores keep their small animal cages by the window. Don't they know that direct sunlight is bad for them? Not just the small fuzzy animals, but the reptiles aren't given the suitable housing either. I've seen 6 turtles together in a tank. When a snake is shedding, they're definitely not getting the required amount of mist to help their new skin develop. Lets not forget about the hermit crabs, who have to sleep on top of each other. Most of them are missing their claws from fighting. The dead crabs are rotting and dangling out of their shells! My point is that the pet stores should really try to improve the condition of how they care for their animals. They shouldn't treat them as merchandise, but rather a living creature. The stores should be equipped with people that actually have experience with the animals, or at least research about them. My biggest RGGG is that they will sell their animals to just anybody! A true animal lover also wouldn't think that the life of a dog is greater than that of a small animal's. A life is a life, no matter what kind of creature it belongs to. People simply think that a dog's life is a greater deal than a hamster's because they're more loyal, intelligent, and bonding. Don't get me wrong, I really value a dog's life, but people that think that a tiny animal's life isn't worth protecting really p!$$ me off! Rgggg  :x !!!!! Am I the only one that thinks like this? By the way, I have seen guinea pig shows. It's pretty cool :D. I've also seen a mice-costume-dress-up show :D. Adorable little outfits. The winner mouse had a wizaard's hat and a cape. 4H does a lot of those things, and since my barn and I are 4H members, well...

5. This is such a cute story! Make sure you read all the way to the end. A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the pups. And set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy. "Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies." "Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, "These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money." The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. "I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?" "Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle "Here, Dolly!" he called. Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up.... "I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would." With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands."
6. As everybody else said, DO NOT BUY LIVE ANIMALS FROM PET STORES. a lot of people forget about the small animals and birds and reptiles, but they also come from pet mil places, where they are bred and raised inhumanely in unsatisfactory conditions. IMO, live animals should only be bought from breeders, where the people will be educated on the animal. I just wrote an essay about this for school, but I have yet to get it back. I know a lot of people who will buy several hamsters as babies. The pet stores don't tell them, but when they grow up, they all need different cages. When they find out about this, they'll abandom them, or let them go into fields or woods, thinking they'll return to the wild! :o So, my point is, like everybody's do not buy from pet stores!

Sit-Down!

Hey guys! Luka does it perfectly most of the time now:D! Sometimes, he'll think that it means to jump up and grab the food, and my hand :o -bad... He only does his tricks with some sort of hand motion though. Is that bad? Should I get him to respond only to my voice? Or only to the hand signals? :-?
8. Most of you polly already know about these things, but they really p***ed me off, so I thought I'd share...  There's a lot of them, and some of them are better than others. 9. My friend, who's the owner of the barn I ride at, had a one year old lab/pit cross (Haley) from the MSPCA. Well, being a riding area, we have trails in the woods that we often take the horses on. Haley and two other Keeshonds would take off onto the trails during the day and come home in the afternoon. The dogs have been doing it for years, and none of them ever got lost. Well, on December 4th, the 3 dogs took off into the woods again, except this time, Haley didn't come home with the other two Keeshonds. A couple of days later, there were ads in the papes and the police and shelters were notified. A couple of weeks later, the owner and our other friend found the dead dog in the woods. There was a bullet wound that ran from her right shoulder to her left hip. The police later arrested a hunter, who said that he thought he saw "a deer (Haley) running alongside two wolves (Keeshonds)." Puhleez! He was definitely in shooting range, and he said he aimed for one of the wolves, but got the deer instead. They think he chased Haley off the trail and into the hunter's land, cuz obviously, they can't hunt on our trails. He's getting his hunter's liscense taken away, and possibly fined, but it still p***es  me off that hunters are so irresponsible. Rgggg! What's the point of hunters? I really liked the beautiful dog, who would come with us to the horse shows and horse camps, wagging his tail. By the way, she still has her old American Bulldog "Snoopy" and she got a basset hound pup "Charlie." If anyone's interested, the barn's website is http://www.rockhillstable.com/ My friend/the owner of the barn and Haley, is wearing the blue on the STALLIONS page I leased "Leavit to Luck" for the summer and I rode "Callaway's Bold Look" on the SALES page. I ride "Reggie" and "Bejeweled" on the LEASING page all the time.

Sit-Down!

Okay, my dog knows the "sit" "down" "wait" "paw" "catch" and "sit up" in both English and Japanese. Sounds well trained? Problem - how I get him o go from the down, back up to the sit. Once he gets down, he won't get back into the sit, which means that he can't do the paw or the sit up. Once he gets down, I have no option but to give him the treat. Can you reverse this process, so that he goes from the down to the sit? :-?
11. I agree with DogPaddle. www.petfinder.com or www.petshelter.org always has a lot.
12. I hope nobody thinks that I'm against spiked collars, cuz that's definitely not what I meant. It does look cute on certain dogs. I knew this dog once who had one. He looked all tough and everything, but he was the biggest CHICKEN. He would hide under a table, just when somebody sneezed a loud one - lol. :D Doesn't it hurt though, when you're cuddling with the dog, especially with a dog like mine, who gets all excited and jumps up and hugs you? Now imagine having one on a westie or something... that would be creepy. I still hate all the cute so-called "bully breeds" that end up in the shelter wearing those things. I guess it's just a mental image, cuz the first time I saw those collars was on a fighting dog in this special documentary about humane education. Sorry guys. I know you guys are great owners, but it's so hard to break out of those first impression images. There are just some ignorant, irresponsible people that ruin it for the rest of us. Rggg... :x
13. Truly, no offense to those who use one, but what's up with the collars with the spikes on the outside of them? I know that it doesn't directly hurt the dog, but isn't it in the way when he wants to lie down or whatever. Isn't it painful for the owners that decide to go over and hug their dog? I have a friend who thinks she's gothic (she's a really nice kid), and everytime I walk with her down the crowded hallways, her spiked bracelet digs into me, and it kills! I just don't get the point of them. Is it supposed to make the dog look tough? Why? I hate how a lot of shelter dogs come in with those "gangster" collars. And the dogs are all either pit bulls, mastiffs, A. bulldogs, E. bulldogs, Dobies, Rotties, Staffies, Amstaffs, or other bully breeds. I just don't understand? They're pretty heavy, so I feel bad for the poor dog's neck (muscle strain for trying to keep its head up). ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
14. I have exams starting tomorrow, so I haven't had time to read all the posts, so it's prolly repeated a bunch of times, but here it goes. If used incorrectly[b/], the prong chains can do a lot of damage. The spikes make litlle bruises all around the dog's neck, which makes the neck area very painful and sensitive. Dogs may become fearful of going out on walks. Others may snap if you touch their necks (protective of their necks). Other dogs can bear that kind of pain, which causes them to pull even harder, causing tracheal injuries. Also, if your dog suddenly decides to charge at something, the prongs can pierce the skin with the sudden, powerful pull. A dog should be trained to use a collar, but for those who can't, what-chya gonna do? For a dog that pulls extra hard, Gentle Leaders or harnesses can be helpful. For a dog that tends to slip out of it's collar, a slip collar is very good. It is impossible for a dog to slip out of, but also very safe. It's basically like the chain choke collars, except it's made out of fabric or nylon, just like a collar. But if the dog tries to slip it's head out, it tightens.
15. I have the same problem. He likes the soft fuzzy stuffed animals, but the insides of the poor thing will cmome out and the eyes will get popped off in like a day. He doesn't like the rubber toys as much. He likes the ropes, but last night his gums started bleeding cuz he chews on them so hard. He likes the Kongs, but I don't want to give him a kong with treats in it every day... he won't play with them unless the treat's in it. Anybody have any suggestiond? Are there any tough stuffed animals? :-?
16. I'm a bit late, but about Cheetah's post about determining a dog's age by teeth, I might be able to help. I've been riding/working with horses for 4.5 years, so I learned quite a bit about age and teeth. A horse's teeth will start to change coloring as it grows older. It will also become worn down and flatter, so the crevices of the teeth will almost disappear. The jaw's shape will also change, so the alignment and angle of the teeth will change. This is in a horse, ofcourse, and I'm not sure if it's the same thing with a dog, but I'm pretty sure it relates. I volunteer at a shelter, and there, an old dog's breath will usually smell worse than a young dog's, and it's gums will be speckled with brown. The teeth will be yellowish with dark tartar build-up. Sorry I'm not really help, but I've only owned a dog for 1 week (I've researched/read on them for years). I know a lot about horses though, but I guess that doesn't really help, cuz this is a dog site. Sorry...
17. I'm fairly new, so here's my story. I'm 15 now, and lived in Japan until 1996, when we moved to NH, USA. Currently I have a teddy bear hamster Obi, a hamster with paralyzed legs adopted from the shelter Peaches, 5 fancy mice, 2 gerbils Goma & Ti, 4 frogs, and a pond with about 40 fish in it. I have a younger sister too. I've also been horseback riding for 4.5 years. This summer, I leased an untrained, bucking Thoroughbred to ride called Romeo (I witnessed two of my friends get bucked off bad - like rodeo! My other friend got bucked off him too), and right now, I've been assigned to be the exerciser/trainer of a Morab named Sadie. (I ride hunter/jumper). In the past, I've had 4 other hamsters, a buch of frogs, a bunch of fish, a bunch of snakes, and 4 turtles. I also kept a chipmunk that wandered into our garage for two days (I thought he was injured, but he was just heat stroked). I've been volunteering at a local shelter for close to two years, and I just adopted my first dog, a 1 year old red and white male lab/German short-haired pointer cross, Luka. (I'll post pics as soon as I learn how to). Well, she already knows the sit, down, paw, dop it, and wait (for food) commands. However, he has EXTREMELY SEVERE SEPARATION ANXIETY and can't even be left alone for 5 minutes (He's house and SELF destructive. Also see posts SEVERE VELCRO DOG and help me with my new dog). He sleeps indoors right now because our 6 feet wooden fence was completely chewed by squirrels. In the summer, he'll be outdoors during the day, but supposedly, he jumped over a six-foot chain-linked fence at the shelter. He'd be a good candidate for dog agility, so I might get into as a recreational, leisurely hobby with him to burn off his extra lab energy. We're currently crate training to be left alone without killing himself. We're using the "extend your absence each time" method. We let him out for short walks in the morning and at night, and between those, in the afternoon, we'll go jogging with him for about 15~30 minutes. Then, the rest of the day, he lies around or sleeps. He absolutely loves his Kong saucers, not the "fill with food and peanut butter" kind. Wow, this turned out long, but think of it more as a self-introduction as a week-old member to the site. I hope everybody knows me better now.
18. Hey bullygirl! I'm glad my dog isn't the only one. I'm pretty sure it's a good stress-reliever. I just don't want him to hurt himself. You wouldn't think that a dog would keep playing with it, even if it's hurting him, but you never know. My dog gets bored of the round kongs that you put the peanut butter in, but he loves the kind where you put the biscuits in the holes.
19. My dog has what you call very severe separation anxiety. He can't even be left alone for 3 minutes! Everybody thought that it was because he was worried that we would abandon him. However, I have this Japanese device called the Bowlingual, manufactured in September 2002 by TAKARA Company. It actually catches the wavelenths of a dog's bark and translates it into human language (Japanese). You choose your dog's breed, and depending on the pattern of the wavelengths, which vary with a dog's mood, translates it. According to the Bowlingual, my dog isn't afraid, but he want's somebody to play with him. It said "Let's play," "I'm bored," "Why aren't you playing with me," and "Why aren't I the center of attention?" He barks sooo loud. Is there anything I can do? This is not your normal separation anxiety dog. He is EXTREMELY SEVERE! That's the reason why the previous owner surrendered him to the shelter. How can he be helped? He'll also try to get out of his crate and wear his teeth down.
20. My dog chews like crazy. He's a real frisbee dog! He doesn't play it, but he made it disappear. He was constantly chewing it while we were watching TV. Because we were there, I didn't think that it would be dangerous, actually, a good stress reliever for the dog. But my question is this. Even if the dog is supervised, would he wear his teeth down to the nerves? Is this normal behavior for a dog, to chew up the entire frisbee into little bitty pieces:-? ?
21. That's great that you're so devoted to dogs and your kids. I think another dog would be a nice addition, as long as you're goint to have the time to commit to all of them equally. Maybe an already housetrained dog or a dog with some manners already would be better. On the other hand, maybe you should get what you, your kids, and you dogs would all get along with. GOOD LUCK & WELCOME TO THE SITE! :D

23. The only thing I realized, that whenever i turn off the lights, my dog's reaction doesn't change one bit. He won't look around, or look up, or wander, or anything. Same thing when I flip the lights back on. No reaction, what so ever. And no, he's not blind.
24. Is there a reason as to why it's vegetable based? Is it just better for them than meat
25. Hey everybody! What are GREENIES? Are they green :evillaugh: :haha: :niedowiary: ? I'm totally ignorant about these things, so you gotta keep me updated about the dog world:oops: . :banan: (I love this dancin' banana!)
