Not really sure how we're going to handle this
Luka-pop replied to gooeydog's topic in Everything about dogs
I wouldn't blame you for holding agrudge against them. This is prolly none of my business, but do you know what kind of chat people thay are? Unless they're like people on dogo, who love dogs and have a good amount of knowledge about them, it prolly wouldn't be a good idea to have them at a house with Goo. They might not know how to act towards a dog, they might misinterperet the dog's behaviors, and it just wouldn't be safe, for Goo, for the guests, and for your family. I agree with sixjollydogs about chat "friends" being unsafe, disguised, and dishonest. I'm especially unsure about the alcoholic cuz we think that Luka's previous owner may have been an alcoholic abuser or something. You never know how the guy would react. If your mom insists on having the guests over, your aunt's house would prolly be the best resort, but Goo may act strangely in an unfimilar surrounding/situation. Think this over with your mom and your family. If Goo gets uncomfortable and hurts somebody, you can't blame Goo. It's not his fault that he can't complain and convince your mother otherwise. He has his bark and his teeth to let the people know how he feels. -
Wow! A new dog and a nephew! Congratulations! Luka's a lab/GSH pointer mix, and he's 60lbs (just thought I'd throw that in). Are you sure it's not 3 months ? :-?

I put his food in a big can. He had diarrhea today, but other than that, I think he'll be fine. If I put locks on my cabinets, it'll be about 10 years ahead of my baby (I'm only 15)! You can never be too prepared! Thanks everyone!

Thanks for apologizing. And I'm sorry too for my previous post. I had just got my midterms back a couple of days ago, and I was in a crappy mood (I did really bad in Algebra II/Trigonometry Honors- Ahhhhh!). Plus, Luka got through to his food and ripped open the bag and ate it, so he went to the bathroom in the house. I needed to let out my steam. I'm sorry I took it out on you guys :( . Forgive me. I'm just glad you realized it wasn't us.

That would be cute... seeing a little girl on such a big gentle dog. It looks nice cuz the picture is black and white, not color. It's also nice that the girl isn't facing the camera. It adds that "mood," I can't explain it...

He doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort, but he did eliminate (#2) in the house just now, about 1.5 hours after his dinner, half an hour after ripping open the bag of food. He's fully housetrained and hasn't ever done this unless he was left alone. I just don't want to find him 10 pounds heavier tomorrow morning  !
I've often wondered where the heck Brittanys ears came from! Luka is a very handsome fellow!
Thanks Carolk9s! They're cute ears aren't they... And sorry girls, Luka already has a girlfriend. It's Cheetah's pit bull shepherd mix  ! They were great together! And don't worried, they're both fixed. By the way, Luka's feet are webbed, a lab trait?
-
What do I do!? After his dinner, Luka wandered off into a different room for about 2 minutes. 2 hours later, I went into the room that Luka was in before, and found the bag of food, open! He must haver ipped through the bag. How much do you think he could have consumed? I don't want him getting sick or all of a sudden gaining weight. What should I do? Cut down on his food for a while? He's a lab/pointer mix, so he's a candidate for GDV and for weight gain.

Notice laduenda hasn't said anything about our replies yet. Maybe she feels  that we've proved her immature, which she sould be, especially because her assumptious accusation was wrong, and even more if she posted this, just to prove us wrong and her dog care techniques right.
-
Yeah, what did he have surgery for? I use vet wrap for the horses' legs at the barn, but I guess this is a dog we're talking about... They come in pwitty colors - blue, purple, red, green...

Hey Carolk9s! Brittany looks a lot like Luka! Especially the ears and nose/head shape. It must be a GSP trait. Like Brittany, Luka also has unevenly flopped ears and a point on his head, with the same lips.

Luka is 58cm/23in at the shoulder (just measured). and he is 58lbs. Personally, I don't think he has any boxer in him because he has a very thin streamline and light build. His dogonality is, well, very submissive and gentle. He will become playful and energetic when he gets excited. He has red specks on his throat and feet (a setter/spaniel trait-ticking). I wish I had better pics of his entire body, so that you guys can see. Cheetah, who's with me fighting for the computer, agrees with me that if you saw him in real life, you prolly wouldn't think there's boxer in him. His build just doesn't give that impression. The bottom pic makes his "eyeliner" look darker than it really is. He also has a pink nose, which is also a setter/spaniel trait. I wonder if he has liver GSP in him cuz of his redness, except that liver GSP are much darker.

Yes he points and his tail goes up. Where do you think he got his coloring? The vet said that it was really unusual for a red dog to have a while stripe like he does on his face.

Hey newfiemom and everybody! Look at this really cute pic from a Pedigree ad!

Here's a pic of Luka (more coming soon!). Lemme know what you guys think he is. The shelter said he was a lab mix. I think there's German Short-haired Pointer in him. Or maybe something like a setter or spaniel, because of his reddish coloring. He points his tail up into the air when he sees small animals or other dogs. I thought that maybe he had some bird dog in him. Lemme know. The peanut butter idea is pretty clever courtnek! It must have been pretty funny to watch. Luka will sniff it, but put his nose too clsoe and get it all over his nose!

I've definitely got to agree with Mei-Mei. If you want people to believe and trust you, don't do this. You're only assuming that it was one of us. Why don't you try to gather more proof before going off on a wild blaming streak!? All you're doing is trying to prove yourself right and us wrong, no justice or fairness. You have too much pride and self-confidence about your dogs and breeding. Why don't you try to gain people's trust by proving that you're actually responsible, mature, unselfish, and trustworthy! Plus, like Mei-Mei said, all we know about you is that you live in Arizona. No phone #, address, anything! You're pathetic  .

Thankfully, Luka had been taught not to eat with humans at his previous home, but my mom always used to trip on him when he followed her around in the kitchen. Eventually, I had to train him not to come into the kitchen. I started out with a firm "No" when he came into the kitchen. When that didn't work, I took drops of water and I flicked it at him, just enough to startle him, a gentle amount. While I flicked the water, I said "Go away!" Withing 10 minutes (he's a fast learner), with the flicking hand motion (no water) and command, he'll back away from the kitchen and will lie down and stare at you from the living room. When I finish with the kitchen, I grab a treat and reward him for waiting patiently. Now, he'll follow us eeverywhere, but as soon as we enter the kitchen area, he'll stop and lie down. Seriously, this dog will learn commands in less than 30 minutes. He's so sensitive, which is a good thing when it comes to training, but that's why he's such a severe velcro dog  .

As most of you may have figured out, I'm a horse rider! Anyways, at the barn, some of the horses use leather halters instead of nylon halters because they're safer. If the horse's halter got caught on a fence or tree or their legs, it could choke them or injure them. If the halter was nylon, this would be a major problem. However, with a leather halter, if the horse pulls away hard enouh with it's 1000 pound body, the leather will actually snap and free them. For that purpose, we use leather halters for safety. For the horses that loose the fur on their noses from the halters, we use a cotton/wool padded halter. But this is a dog we're talking about. Nylon will not tear, but if it somehow catches fire (I don't know how :-? , but still), it will actually melt and stick onto the dog's fur and skin, causing severe second and third degree burns. I just recently got a leather one for Luka, and he likes it. The only problem is, when he scratches his neck, he leaves scratch marks all over his brand new $20 collar! With a regular dog that doesn't have allergies, I guess it's a matter of owner preference. I also don't think that a dog would be able to snap a leather collar like a horse could  . I'm prolly not much help when it comes to dogs (I've been working with horses for 5 years, dogs for 1.5 years, but with my own dog for only 3 weeks!). Sorry guys...

Luka likes stuffed toys to tear apart, tennis balls only if you throw it for him, Kongs until itt becomes too much work for him to get out the treats, rope toys, wrapping paper rolls, or nyla bones to chew when he's bored. He will do ANYTHING for ANY TYPE of FOOD!!!

When I adopted Luka from the shelter, they recommended me to get a GL cuz he pulled hard. I considered the GL, but having used them on the other shelter dogs I volunteer with, I didn't want Luka to be injure his neck and dislike walks. So I got him a harness instead, but once he came home and settled down, my 11 year old (68 lb, 4 ft) sister can walk him with no problems, without the GL. I guess I should go return my $20 harness. Anyways, there's an website for the GL, which I have never visited befor, but I will when I have time. http://www.gentleleader.com Obviously, the site's gonna tell you about all the pros of the product and no cons to sell it, but oh well.
-
Gentle leaders are very helpful for some dogs that pull hard, but for those that can stand being pulled, it can be dangerous. I work with horses and they use halters, but that's different from a dog. A horse's head is above a person's arms, but a dog's head is usually below. When the dog pulls, the dog ends up having to turn its head to one side because of the impact from the gentle leader. Witha dog that keeps pulling, it could end up straining the dog's neck muscles and stuff. It should only be used with a dog that responds to the leader. With a dog that keeps pulling, a harness would prolly be safer for a dog's neck.

I haven't had enough time to read 6 pages of posts, so somebody prolly already said this, but Laduenda, I don't like how you diss us who rescued our dogs. I also diagree about your contract, especially how the dogs required only a minimum of one hour of socialization a day. That could mean being with your dog while watching one Animal Precinct show, or walking your dog for an hour, or playing ball for an hour. It's important for dogs to be with their owners while they're just doing everyday "stuff." An hour of straight play is definitely not enough. They need to be able to cuddle, watch TV with the family, and just sleep around, while the owner is home. A minimum of an hour a day of socialization is definitely not enough, especially if you're breeding pits. Also, have you ever visited petsheltr.org or something, and seen so many pits for adoption? It's cuz people mess up with obvious reasons. Bad training, lack of socialization, you get my point. I don't know much, but my point is, don't diss rescued dogs if you're breeding the way you are. There are plenty of pits at the shelters that would make great companions. We don't nee anymore unwanted, misunderstood pits, or any breed, for that matter. And don't make bad comments about other people and their dogs if you don't know about them. Don't assume, and don't think that you're the only sensible dog breeder/owner here. Accept the fact that many people disagree with your ways and practices.

I know that rawhides aren't really good for dogs and everything, but wondering... How long does it take for the "rawhide illness" symptoms to show up? Is it while they're chewing on it, or the next day, or long term?

Hey Hazel, that's weird how your snake won't even eat it when it's dipped in chicken broth... Hm... Sometimes snakes only eat it if their prey is moving. Try dangling it on a string. By the way, I saw these Chinese herb medication/drug/alcohol drinks and it had snakes, turtles, and lizards in them. The eyes were taken out so there were holes where the eyes used to be. Talk about gross and sad  . There's this old Japanese cooking where you put catfish and tofu in the same pot. When the water boils, the fish swims into the cool tofu. With time, the tofu boils too, so the fish suffers in the tofu until it gets cooked. then they eat the fish with the tofu  . I've also heard about people my friend knows, who have a pond inntheir back yard. They catch the turtls, tie them to trees, and takes their heads off with an ax. Then they cook them and eat them! :x  :o  A life is a life, no matter what kind of creature it belongs too! Rggg!!!
