1. I don't know, but if they don't let those puppies out to good homes ---- which there are plenty! -- then I hope we get to find out what company this is. :x
2. Not good news  "HI EVERYONE, DON'T HAVE GOOD NEWS; NOT ABLE TO GET ANY OF THE PUPPIES. EITHER THEY GOT SPOOKED OR I MISSED THE WINDOW, THEY HAVE NOT CONTACTED ME AT ALL. I HAVE TRIED OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I'M SICK ABOUT IT, BUT WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU FOR TRYING TO HELP. IF YOU GOT THIS E-MAIL ALREADY ITS BECAUSE I'M GETTING CONFUSED WITH SO MANY EMAILS COMING IN. THE RESPONSE WAS OVERWELMING.THANK YOU, KAREN"
3. Rowie, I've explained why there is no company name. The company is only willing to do this if it isn't revealed who they are. I think the company is getting cold feet at this point. "The responses have been overwhelming. There is also, I believe, an issue of the company possibly getting cold feet due to too much publicity, so things may be on hold. I don't know. I think patience on our part for Sue is the thing. I know everyone wants to help these pups, but I'm sure she will contact us as soon as she needs help. Please call Sue at (pm me for numbers, yellowlabs also has them), or email her at lightfal@clarityconnect.com for beagle pups rescue update. I'm not the contact person. Good luck, Fran"
4. Weird. I'll try calling today and see what happens.
5. No, the people who are getting these pups out could only do so if they agreed not to reveal the company's name. I would expect its one of the usual suspects...Eukanuba/Iams, Purina, Pedigree, Hills. They all test on animals in various ways and IMO have little care for the lives of animals.
6. (cross -posted) 50 Beagle Puppies (12-14 weeks old) have 15 days to live. Just received the following email. PLEASE pass on to your email list. Perhaps we can find someone who knows someone who can help here. Time is limited here; please do not hesitate to get this info to everyone. A woman just received a phone call from a dog lover named Karen Hepfner. She has been told about 50 Beagle pups between the ages of 12 weeks and 14 weeks old who were used in a "feeding study" that are no longer needed by the company that did the study. They are willing to place them but they want them gone NOW. Karen has managed to find temporary housing/foster care for 24 of them but there are still sooooo many left. If anyone can help place these babies....who may have been born to do feeding studies so we could pamper our pets with scientifically tested dog food....please contact Karen at: mailto:kkh702@earthlink.net A Beagle rescue group is taking some but there are too many for one organization to deal with. These pups are near Binghamton, NY. Since most placements are in the immediate area it would be good to get these pups to other cities and states. There are only so many Beagle homes in the area and trying to place 50 pups in one small area isnt going to work. In case you are wondering. she has no idea who Karens contact is or the company that has these pups. No one is giving out names...even Karen isnt able to get much information. If you would like to call Karen she does have her phone number. Please email her privately and she would be happy to provide that info. at mailto:fdshawne@epix.net Donna Gee http://www.pup-n-stuff.com PLEASE HELP THESE PUPS FIND HOMES. THEY NEED YOUR HELP. IF YOU CANT ADOPT PLEASE FOSTER
7. More suggestions, hope its not too late "Have they considered Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis? Here's some info on it: http://www.hhdane.com/care/hemorrhagicgastroenteritis.htm" "Does he have any other symptoms? like spots on the skin? could be some sort of auto immune crash, eg thrombocytopenia. (usually treated w/ vitamin K & steroids)" "I hope the vet can find out what is happening...I recently lost my beloved chow-chow to an intestinal aneurysm (sp) and it happened so quickly there was no time to save him...bled out from the rectum. He was only 4 years old...my thoughts are with you. Marty" " did the vet rule out DIC?"
8. So far what I've found for these symptoms are cancer or foreign objects (such as glass?)
9. Oh gosh, I'm so sorry for this dog. I hope its not too late. I cross posted this in hopes of finding something, just hope the dog can hold on. Any news? Did they contact the local and national breed clubs? Maybe it is something common to the breed?
10. If your dog is on Rimadyl currently and panting I would call the vet immediately. Any worrying symptoms on this drug - call in right away. There have been many adverse reactions to Rimadyl including death.
11. What about dog buddies? We are always happy to have one of Parker's friends as a houseguest.
12. Well rice is not something I would ideally use or recommend for most dogs, but remember, every dog is different and some have special needs! To say that rice is not a good food for dogs isn't really true. Most dogs do not need the carbs. However it can be great for soothing GI upset, and it can be helpful in keeping weight on a too thin dog (when medical reasons have been ruled out for thinness). Unfortunately my teen Dane does not eat enough on a strict BARF diet (no offense people but please save the you haven't tried hard enough routine this time), and he does eat whole brown unrefined rice as part of his diet (separated from raw). As far as saying high vegetables is better or high meat is better, you have to know which type of crystals and what the pH balance of the urine is to say. A high veggie/carb diet will make the urine more alkaline while a high meat diet will make the urine more acidic. Other substances such as vitamin C or baking soda can be used to help keep the urine in the proper values.
13. :D Another convert..... Sounds like you have a lot of good resources! We do a pretty hodge podge approach, so I don't recommend one style over another. I did find Volhard a bit complicated though! I hope you find raw feeding as successful and enjoyable as we do. :)
14. I have found some of the Royal Canin foods to be far too rich, but it is mostly a good company. Natural Balance is made by Dick Van Patten, the dad from 8 is Enough. That and the Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul are probably the most reasonably priced. Natural Balance is pretty easy to find, Chicken Soup seems only to be sold in the boonies!! I tried to get it for my cats and decided that having to drive several hours when I live in the city is ridiculous. Wellness Puppy is extremely palatable and small enough for small breed pups. And just about anything is better than Beneful.
15. I think you should include guidelines for appropriately tying out your dog, and remind people that it does not protect your dog from other people or animals, to make sure to have food and water and shade, etc. Also the site does not state how much weight the line can take. Although I don't use tie-outs myself, I've grown increasingly frustrated with products that say for big dogs and have dinky weights on them or don't list anything at all. Many people seem to think that 150 is the biggest a dog can get. I actually saw a product yesterday for large dogs 20-45 pounds!! I'm sure you think that having your 130 lb dog test it is good, but remember a lot of us have much bigger dogs and would like to buy products too! Use for cats? Isn't that dangerous? What if a dog or another cat came along and the cat couldn't get away?
16. Sugar can make dogs hyper, irritable, sensitive, not to mention overweight, and providing too many calories with little to no nutritional value. It also desensitizes the dog's tastes and he can often become 'addicted' to sugary foods. Sugar makes for quick energy but gives the dog no longterm energy, which may make him lethargic later on and/or prone to eating too much in a day, especially if free fed. Yeasts thrive on sugar and a dog's body is not designed to eat a lot of sugars, especially those that are refined. This can easily throw off the balance of yeasts and bacteria in the body and cause specific or even systemic yeast infections. This will especially be a problem for any kibble or grain fed dogs. Sugars and refined carbohydrates (which break down quickly into sugars) are also thought to feed cancers, although I have not done much research into this area, but I have read it in several pretty reliable resources.
17. Great, thanks! I'll take your word on it! :D My puppy has that duck too, the yellow one, but ours is soooo much dirtier!
18. Oh wow, perfect timing! I've been trying to find out the size of the Wellness puppy kibble. Is it small enough for a 3 month Chi? It's a great food and most dogs just love it!
19. Pets1st does make some great foods, but it is only available in lower mainland Canada and parts of the west coast. Additionally they are having problems exporting to the US right now because of that one cow. Natural Balance's kibble is really small and dense with no common allergens. My cats (one of whom has numerous allergies) have done great on their cat food. The rolls have a lot more stuff in them, some of which may cause the same problems. http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com Wysong makes an Anergen line that is extremely simple, although my cats HATE it (it is actually a cat AND dog food!). I don't really care for their other foods though. http://www.wysong.com California Naturals (also makes Innova) at http://www.naturapet.com has some really basic lines as well, like their Chicken and Rice. Wellness is a great line and very palatable. My cats (8 and 10 pounds) steal the dog biscuit crumbs of Wellness we use right out from under my 130 lb puppy! http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com
20. Well for breakfast you can make those breakfast bars, that would cut down. How much does your dog eat a day? We lug around raw meat for a Great Dane camping, we just had to shift what we eat. Less meat for us LOL. Volhard also has a dried dog food, something she has on her website I think, that can be used instead?
21. No kibble at all. The whole point of us doing this is so that I am in charge of what he gets and that is is all fresh, life giving human quality food. I do feed grain but would not to most dogs. For us, at this point, grains are working well for us to add some weight on, but it is not my ideal and once he is grown, we may not need to at all. Unfortunately without grains just has not worked for us. Supplementing...well I try to provide all the nutrients through the diet, but I do supplement with vitamin C, essential oils (salmon oil, olive oil, flax and pumpkin seeds), digestive enzymes, probiotics (in yogurt or kefir). Otherwise we try to attain balance and completeness through the variety in the diet, but I think this would depend on the dog, on how much and what he/she is willing to eat. My dog is 130 lbs and growing, so he eats more than I do, which gives us a lot of time to get in a lot of different foods in a day. I don't fast because he is young and growing. Danes are still very much puppies at 10 months, and he is very thin. He normally eats 3 full meals a day plus snacks, but one day a week he gets 2 meals instead. That's about as close to fasting as I am going to get at this stage.

soft poops

Too early to tell - it could be just the transition or that could be the food. Or he could have worms, very common in puppies, and even if they've been wormed, it can take two wormings so...better check it out.
23. Don't you mean the eggshells provide the calcium??
24. Awww poor Daisy! Does she get to eat tomorrow? My (human) nutrition book says good stuff about L-glutamine, especially for GI problems. Cassie, here's the recipe - http://www.drweil.com/app/cda/drw_cda.html-command=Recipe-pt=Recipe-recipeId=10021 It's one of our favorites.
25. I know! Just another thing to make me paranoid...like I need that LOL. Well not to get tooooo off topic here :D but have you ever made the ginger soy sake salmon recipe he has?? YUM!
