Standard Poodles are great dogs. I was thinking about getting a poodle prior to getting Kavik. They are bright and loyal, love sporting activities, have been known to be feirce protectors of their loved ones and they are excellentl snugglers.

Right now in the Eastern Standard Time Zone it is 12:45 pm. Anyone got the time in GMT
-
That's acute dog, that's what sort of dog it is.
-
5 hours I think plus or minus I can't remember which. I got it set in dogo and now it shows the right time. At the bottom of my screen it does show GMT - 5 hours.

I don't suppose there is a GOOD rescue group there?

Nothing that says "by-product" or "meat" in the ingredients is good. :o

Its a balmy -23 C or -9 F here right now with wind chill. Last evening it was -31 C or -24 F with wind chill. The boys were making poopsicles in 60 seconds. It is easier to pick up but it is so very cold. Kavik doesn't care but Zaphod goes out, does his stuff and is on his way back into the house almost before he is done. :)

Dogs are in some cases more at risk of frostbite or damage to pads than we may realize, road salt really exacerbates existing frostbite and/or causes damage that makes pads more susceptable (sp?) to frostbite. Booties or Paw Protector are great, at the very least limit his time out of doors until paws heal, wipe them clean when he comes in to remove salt, and apply petrolium jelly to pads until you can get paw protector or booties. My mom's mutt got mild frostbite on his right rear pad and was ever after more sensitive to the cold in that foot. Not that you could convince him to come inside  .

Good for you Rott, everyone deserves time off and it is important to have time with your new guy so you can have time to get to know him and he can settle in supervised. You will post pics won't you?

The split between working and nonworking BC lines is well under way here. Generally both camps are fairly responsible about ensuring working dogs go to working environments and nonworking dogs are not purchased by people who need to rely on the dog to work livestock. I still think many people who take on non-working BCs are not prepared for the drive to do something and intensity of these dogs but that is another issue. Hobbit - Are you concerned that with the split into working and non-working BCs there will not be enough working dogs to fill the need or that the split will not be complete enough and the working traits of BCs will be compromised? As to Hazel it sounds like she was from working lines and sent to a pet home and that could be a bit of an issue. If so Hazel would definately need some serious outlet for her drive/energy.

The background's on the Dobe photos from Wispering Woods are not very encouraging either, check out the background on the photo of Phantom's Wish Upon A Star CGC nursing. The other site with the genetics info seems good, but it will take me a month to work my way through it, oh well, needed something to read anyway.

Did anyone see any pics of any of these Dobes or White Dobes on their site? I couldn't find any.
The problem is that many border collies are not small enough to bring down the jump height to what they want. The folks I am talking about are very competitive folks who want the fastest dogs which is why they are breeding these mutts.
Hmm, I was just thinking its sortof strange that something that developed as something a loving dog owner could do with their pet for fun, excercise and competition is becoming the reason to produce a dog a certain way. I may be set in my ways but to me that way of thinking is backwards. If people desperately want a certain cross they can search through things like petfinder, there is no need to create another "designer dog".

Try "up" or whatever command you want to use or just plain "sit" while leading the dog into the right position with a treat - hold it in front of nose and slowly lift upwards and moving back very slightly. Use very small treats and try rapidly going between down and sit clicking and/or treating for each succesful change.

No problem, looking at puppies is not a chore :D . Good luck to you and Jon.

Gigi - What general area would Jon be willing to go pick a dog up from? I agree - shelter dog will probably be fine, all of our dogs except one were from the shelter and true there is no gaurentee the dog won't be gunshy etc but all of our shelter dogs were game to at least try anything that might make us happy.
-
Sounds like things could work out just fine. One word of advise though - I'd switch to a different pizza company :D
-
Yes that is it exactly I think, a fashion thing or a matter of personal taste. Unless of course someone does have livestock their dog is protecting.
-
We only got a spiked collar for one of our dogs - actually my mom's dog Joe. Now I know some people may disagree but I think that every dog like my mom's Joe should where one of these huge spiked collars - it completes their image. After all what 25lb snugglewuss cockaterrpoo mutt is complete without a nasty spiked collar. We actually only put it on him for Halloween, it was very cute. Joe tolerated this with his usuall patient stoicism.

I'm still feeding kibble, researching what noncanned nonbagged food will work for us. Right now the Solid Gold-Millenia is working pretty good though. I've started exposing the dogs to a variety of raw and cooked foods so the transition to whatever diet I choose will be easier.

1dog put down to sleep, buy another now or wait?
DogPaddle replied to a topic in Everything about dogs
I could be wrong but: If your dog enjoyed the company of your sisters dog, even in his own home, he probably would enjoy company. If your a two dog person I'd go with it. As for the second dog being lonely when BJ gets older . . . you could also adopt another dog to keep yourself at the 2 dog level or prepare the 2nd dog by having him spend time alone/apart from BJ as BJ gets older. This will also give your aging guy a bit of respite from a more energetic housemate.
