Write a review for a breed you know well...
DogPaddle replied to sushiwelldone's topic in General questions
Yes I will have to write a review. It's not that I think that BCs are the perfect dog for everyone I just don't want to think about hosts of BCs stuck away from their people and suffering harsh corrections - the poor sensitive neurotic little beasties can't take that sort of thing. -

OH LOOK ANOTHER ONE!
Not the type of dog for the average household. Border Collies are hyper and want to do things their way. If you shove her off the couch because you want to sit in her spot she'll growl at you. She's untrainable, and won't hesitate to nip or show her teeth. Once, when my mom tried to pull her off the couch, she bit at her. When you take her for walks, you get walked by her, and we have a lot of Border Collies in our neighborhood, and anytime I walk by they all start growling. Border Collies aren't the type of dog for the average household.
UNTRAINABLE - THERE ARE FEW BREEDS THAT ARE MORE TRAINABLE!!! Kavik is so eager to please he gets stressed/sad if he doesn't think he's getting it right. -

ARRRG! :x This is one review on BCs
Loyal, sweet, but needs to live outside. Right now I have a beautiful female Border Collie. She is very smart and a great dog, but if you are thinking about getting a Border Collie then you should have a lot of property! Border Collies need to have a lot of backyard to run around in or they will become lazy and overweight - I have a tiny backyard and Kavik is incredible not lazy and underweight, maybe you just need to excercise your dog. Also be prepared for the hair! Border Collies shed an incredible amount all year-round, there is no avoiding this so I would suggest that you either comb and walk the dog daily, or train it to live outdoors. - Kavik barely sheds at all, this has got to be a poor nutrition issue, and if you don't like dogs that shed the options should not be to make them live outdoors but to get a different breed! Border Collies are very compatible to live outdoors, but train them to live outside right from the beginning, if not they will refuse to stay out and spend the night scratching on the door and howling! - Strange the pack animal doesn't seem to like being an outside only dog. Overall Border Collies make a GREAT pet and they even herd sheep, ducks and other various animals. (Once my Border Collie even herded a pack of three horses.) However you must remember they are an outside dog, and if you decide to keep them in the house be prepared to walk them every day or you will find that your Border Collie will become overweight, lazy, and you will have hair everywhere!
Some people really p*** me off! -
and then Snoop just last week stole a whole piece of birthday cake right out from under our noses and ran like the wind with it chomping as he went
:roflt: :roflt: :roflt: Oh I would love to have seen that! Zaphod tried this trick a couple times with pizza slices when he was a pup - the slices where as bigger than his head  But I think seeing Snoopy making off with a whole slice of birthday cake would have been even more amusing - where you able to keep a straight face when you chastised him?
-
Yesterday Zaphod (aka Eat Dog) was crazy trying to get into whatever food was available. He could not seem to resist keeping his nose out of the garbage (which we have not had problems with in ages) he would also try to sneak any food that was not strictly attended - all day. I have never said NO so much in my life. Part way through the day I gave him an extra feeding thinking he may be unusually hungry but it did not seem to help much. Today he seems much better again. What on earth could have gotten into him?
-
I've seen that pic before - very funny. Belgian Malinois are definately a police breed, I'm not surprised you've seen them. They are rapidly becoming the premier Shutzhund breed and are incredibly talented in obedience and very good at agility, very stable temperments and fairly low instince of HD etc, they aren't snuggly though - oh well, I guess you can't have everything. Some people probably aren't even aware of the switch from GSD to Malinois in police forces as they look very similar to someone who hasn't looked into it.
-
Oh poor Sassy, we're all pulling for you. Let us know what's up when you can.
-
Way to go K! That is a whole pile of important info.
-
We did not feed Zaphod puppy food for very long as I got the same advice. He is lean and healthy and seems to have grown to a good size for his presumed mix - lab/chow (and possibly some other breeds.) He is around 55lbs and around a year.
-
Indy is wonderful, I wouldn't have been able to resist such a display of ingenuity, what a smart boy!
-
Cortnek - I think we are talking about a Belgian Malinois. Right Vicki20? Looks like a GSD with a less regular coat pattern, no saddle I think, squarrer body, and maybe pointier face. They have superior obedience and work drive.
-
Maybe they know we hate the homework and feel they are just doing their duty by ripping it to pieces (just like we might like to do.)
-
To bad about that batch of Go! Natural, it has wonderful ingredients. Its also more than 2x as expensive as Canidae, at least in the store near me.
-
If the members of other boards where just trying to be helpful than thanks, paticularly to admin@pitbullpets.com who seems to be trying to keep it polite and discrete. I presume we'll trust it to K to sort out . . . again . . . Thanks K.

Need help to analyse dog food ingredients.

happy thanksgiving to all Canadian dawgs
DogPaddle replied to pei obssessed's topic in Everything about dogs
How come I have to wait another month for thanksgiving?
Because in most of the US its more or less warmer than in most of Canada, we have to have Thanksgiving earlier or all the good harvest stuff would be frost damaged or gone  :D Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes all! -
I would say submissive/eager to please/eager for treat and above all smart but not manipulative exactly. Kavik will do this as well, Zaphod just wiggles exitedly until Kavik does something and then mimics him

Mutts4Me - Insightful and well-worded post. Mei-Mei wrote:
I wish I was smart enough to leave this subject alone, but for some reason I feel like I have to express an opinion that is different from everyone else's. I just can't keep my mouth shut.
I don't think you should have to keep your mouth shut. So long as you try to state your opinion politely, address the issue and not the poster on a personal level and have good intentions . . . well that is what a board is for . . . right? Of course their are going to be times we disagree with each other or misunderstand each other or each other's intentions but the later two are mostly because we a typing, dealing in a media with no voice inflection - misunderstandings happen. I'm here to learn and to share, if I only ever had people agree with me or say what I already knew I probably wouldn't come around as much - not very stimulating. As for sensitivity - I do sympathize with DAL. It is hard going through life extra sensitive or having periods were you are sensitive and unhappy and I suspect now is a hard time for DAL. If she has to stay away to insulate herself while she copes with it then I'm sure that is a decision she has made with some difficulty and perhaps we should respect it.

In our obed. class we did down for the stubborn ones by luring them under your leg so they have to belly crawl and then treating and praising while they were down - same concept as other suggestions. As for leave it - try putting a chair or short table or dog height platform with a favoured treat on it in a wide open space, leash pup, start fairly far away walking on loose lead or heel, approach the treat and when treat has pups attention (with Zaphod this starts 10 ft away  ) say "leave it" and continue walking past, if you get passed without a pull - treat, click, praise. Do the same closer and closer and in different situations, treat on the ground, on your lap, in front of your dog, on her paw while she is in a stay  etc. This teaches both "leave it" and reinforces walking on lead with distractions, eventually you do the excercise off lead. For items that your dog may just pick up around the house, use leave it and/or drop it  and if they don't remove it from their mouth* and replace with a toy they are allowed to chew on. *I even go through the motions of "removing" the offending item from their mouth if it has already been swallowed, being quick is better but if your too late a lengthy examination of the mouth is a not so subtle reminder to your dog that you weren't kidding, its also tedious for them so reduces some of the reward for scarfing. Note this training method usually results in hand washing. (We need a blech emoticon.)

Ah, thank-you! So this is for people who think that if they cross a pei with a pug they'll just get a smaller pei?

I used to feed Canidae, Wellnes and Solid Gold Mmillenia, now I feed raw. Currently I keep Canidae in the house as a back up (now stored in my canoeing barrel pack for this of you who remember Zaphod's second after hours vet trip  ) and when we go on canoe trips I plan on bringing the Mmillenia as it is high in calories, protien and fat - Kavik lost weight last trip we took :( but then so did I :D
-
What is the ori half of the mix?
-
I could use a few suggestions here, please?
DogPaddle replied to atghylin's topic in Everything about dogs
As an alternative - could you cinch up the bottom bit of the curtain so he can't get at it? -
Anytime you deal with large animals wild or domesticated there is a chance of a misunderstanding or accident. I'm sure working with these cats as long as they have that Siegfried and Roy and whatever other staff they have are aware of this. I hope Roy is ok as well. I once got to "walk" a tiger. I applied for a job at some wildlife education place. They take restricted animals that have been confiscated, they were big on the animals always being "wild" not "domesticated", they just had an understanding with their handlers - as with all understandings their can be misunderstandings. I say "walk" because this huge tiger was wearing a regular flat buckle leather collar and I was leading it on a regular pink nylon lead. He didn't walk out front like a dog might, he followed right behind my thigh, he kept nudging me and making a chuffing noise - the handler indicated this was because he liked me - good thing huh!
