Ya see what I mean K. I get sucked into their topics and end up writing to them. I feel like an idiot. The trolls are getting me AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH I'm standing in your corner K, they disguise themselves well but with a mentor maybe I can start my own boxing match eventually. LOL.

I'm a bit late, but I'm more than ready. Now which country to start with first? K Your dutch? Wow didn't know! Was always curious what NL stood for. Now my vote is to give them a taste of their own medicine. Tie them with a chain out in the cold. Then bomb the h*** out their houses. Then we take them out to the backcountry and let them fend for themselves as their dogs have had too many times before. HeHeHe, just had a thought. Maybe we should let the dogs have their fun with them first, huh? We're going to have to do something, because no one else will. P.S. Artful: I worked with an aussie horse trainer for a little while, nicest guy and so good with the animals. Love the accent. Us americans are crazy for those foreign tongues.

Welcome Janus, The danes are taking over dogo. Janus your danes are gorgeous. I have a 5 month old merle dane "Kimba" (natural ear set). As well as a Malamute and a hound. I'm in love with your Kaleb. What a magnificent, bold looking dane. You have a beautiful family. I look forward to talking dane-ish with you.
-
I am going to wait until just before the 6 month mark to have Kimba spayed. She shouldn't hit her first heat before then. I think everyone is correct when they say that the first heat theory has been extinguished in most areas. Do what makes you feel comfortable! Let us know what happens.

What does everybody think about this?

 I won't say anymore. -
Hey Yellow, It's the horrible place where the idea of the dog auction started. They also run the auction. They have forums, chats, etc... I went there to find out what all the fuss was about last week and will never go back. There's a post on Everything about it somewhere. I think it's titled Auction. There is also a petition floating around to stop the auctions.

Welcome AKK, You are the first owner of an Alaskan Klee Kai that I've met. They are cute. I have an Alaskan Malamute so I can see the attraction. I hope you enjoy the forum. There is a post in here where everyone has been posting their dog information. "Your dogs name, sex etc...." You can't miss it, it says Poll to the left of the Subject. Also if you want to get to know us go to our photo albums. Usually in the signature line. You can see pictures of everyones kids.

Aroura, My Malamute-Willow used to have a problem with little dogs and would try to bite. I honestly believe it was the high pitched barking. We sought professional assistance from a trainer and have worked it out by socializing him with small dogs in a controlled environment. But, before we saw the trainer we had no choice but to buy a muzzle. We were in a very remote area and had no access to a good trainer. I bought the humane muzzle that allows panting, drinking but no biting. It fits around the head so that the dog is comfortable and is not associating the muzzle with bad things to come. Willow got used to it. I almost think he was scared of the little dogs. He's fine now. One very important thing I learned is that if I felt nervous about Willow meeting a little dog he would get more antsy. I have to control my emotions so that he doesn't react off of them. Make any sense  Go To: http://husher.com/main.html The fitting Guide is here and you can call them with your exact measurements as well: http://husher.com/fitting.html I hope this helps.

Okay, so last night I got home and had some dinner with hubby and then went outside with the dogs. When everyone was finished we let Kimba and Willow inside and waited for Shiloh to meander into the house. I turn around for a second to close the door and smell something burning. I turn back around and theres Kimba trying to warm her butt by our natural gas stove, the kind with the glass door. (Um, here's the embarrassing part) She got too close! I ran over because of the smell and she just looked at me like (Ooh this feels great). Her TAIL was stuck to the stove glass door and the hair was burning. (Yipes) I pulled it off but it felt like when you pull tape off of skin. She hadn't even noticed, she didn't care. I was freaking out of course. So I got her off of the stove and then checked out her tail. Well, half of her tail now has little curled up hairs, no skin damage. The only reminder was the horrible smell of burnt hair throughout the entire house. It's like one of those movies you see with the dog so lazy it's tail is in the fireplace and on fire and it doesn't care. I still can't believe she did that and never knew. Needless to say we now have the stove area closed off with puppy gates. Our mal is bummed because that's one of his favorite places to lie down. Anyone else ever had something like this happen or do I just have a very unique little dane?

The names, breeds, and number of dogs you have

Hey that was me. It logged me out darn it. Anyways, Willow, Shiloh & Kimba are my kids. Sorry for the mess up. -
I'm feeding my dane and mal Holistic Formula Eagle Pack Dry Kibble. The Hound gets the Reduced Calorie formula. She's a little plump  All the dogs enjoy the kibble and they have an impeccable reputation. It has come highly recommended by at least 12 US Great Dane Breeders. It does have Meal is this really such a bad thing? Their website is: www.eaglepack.com I refuse to buy grocery store brands, Iams or Science Diet (dogs had bad reactions). This is the only food that they all like and is good for them. The kibble controversy continues.................

Was laughing so hard at you two hubby thought I had lost it. Guest if you are serious then take your dog to obedience. We rescued a 6 year old german shephard, malamute, ridgeback cross from euthanasia. She had been abused and hated men. It took behaviour & obedience classes for 6 months to get her back to the loving dog she was meant to be. I have since placed her in a loving home but while I had her she was one of the greatest dogs I've had the privilage (sp) to know. 125 pounds of kissy, kissy. ALL THE TIME. (What can I say she loved to lick faces. A little embarrassing at times but too cute) At 6 years she knew nothing, now she can do just about any trick in the book and is a wonderful companion. If I had a scanner I'd post a picture sorry guys. I still miss her so very much. Wish I hadn't placed her but she's so so happy. She lives with an elderly couple who have 4 couches, three of which are just for their 2 GSDs and Zena (my placement). Obedience is definately the way to go no matter the age. It has many benefits.

Poor dogs! I signed. What's next human kids? :x

You need to do some research on what has made some breeds unliked by the majority of humans. People train them as fighters, guard dogs, etc and then get tired of the dog. It then has to be put down if too aggresive. No one on this board will ever recommend a breed for guard dog. We are all avid dog lovers and enjoy their gentle spirits. Just so that are aware, a dane should never be used for anything but loving. They are a sweet natured giant of a dog and must be carefully watched and raised. Alot of health risks involved in owning danes. Any giant breed is going to cost you good money to keep. Proper nutrition, higher vet bills, more space required and the most important as much love as you can give. I've seen alot of good dogs ruined by people who think they need a ferocious dog to protect them. If you are seriously considering this then you need to go to a professional guard dog training & breeding facility. They will not train the dog to be aggressive but train it on how to look and act. They hand pick and raise dogs in their facility and sell them to qualified applicants. DO NOT GO TO A BACKYARD TRAINER & Do not go buy a puppy or dog and try to train it yourself. And I will repeat DO NOT GET A GREAT DANE. They are not an aggressive breed and are a very loving creature. Please go talk to a guard dog training facility. They will assess your needs and figure out if you actually needed a dog or if like Mei-Mei said an alarm system will work fine. Carry pepper spray anything but just buying a dog. You have a lot of work to do, go to the library, read books, go to trainers, breeders. I'm sorry but you've got me a little upset I am pleading with you to please not buy a dog and denie it the chance of a healthy happy loving life.

I know this is a dog forum but had to post I'm so bummed out by this. 2 weeks ago law enforcement officers issued a search warrant to a couple in their 60's who had been reported for abusing their 140 horses. A hay delivery man had been on the premises and didn't think the horses looked healthy. Offficials seized all of the horses and the residents of Oregon state are gathering in efforts to save the poor animals. All of the horses were mal-nourished, had worms and their hooves were so long to the point they were curling into themselves. The couple is said to be a pair of horse traders who moved here 6 months ago from Washington state. The couple has been arrested and looking at 210 counts of animal abuse. Now's the really horrible part. The 210 is because half of the horses were carrying foals and in their mal-nourished state it is not known if the foals will survive. There are some really true, thoughtful people out there though. The Save The Horses fund has been getting very generous donations and they have also received truckloads of hay, free vet care, boarding (nice home with heat) their feet have been trimmed. All I can say is at least for those foals that do survive they may know a much better world than that of their parents. How can anyone do this and live with themselves? How can you not see 140 starving horses staring in your window. Why didn't neighbors report this before it got to this point? WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO? On a side note: I went to the BB forum to see what everyone was talking about and was quite angered by this: "Dogs should be treated like dogs not like people." Everyone has their opinion and is free to express it but why can't those of us who love our dogs and horses like kids treat them this way. Is it so wrong? My dogs know I'm alpha, but I'm also best friend, mommy and they will never be denied the love they so deserve. Okay enough for now I could stay on this topic forever. Thanks for listening.

Husband eventually wants a bloodhound. Doing research now. Will probably be a couple of years and then hopefully we'll rescue a retired or misplaced bloodhound. Just want personal opinions from owners and advice that could help in the long run. Thanks a bunch everyone and again it will be a couple of years, we want our baby "Kimba" (4 month old great dane) to be old enough not to harass an older dog. Eventually we hope to own a large enough spread that we can open our own large breed and hound rescue. We would like to devote our lives to finding loving homes for purebred dogs. I'm doing alot of research now on the health issues that plague large breeds. Any and all infomation on hounds or large breeds would be great. What I've found so far is a lot of controversial information. I've come to the conclusion that the only way to learn will be to discuss these matters with owners and breeders. Too many vets disagree on health and the raising of large breeds. Okay now I'm rambling. Thanks everyone.

Hey Everyone, Alright strange question! Willow (Malamute) has been having problems with his neck. Having x-rays after Christmas. He can't lift his neck too high without yelping. We have him on aspirin until we figure out whats going on. I'm a little worried now because in the past month his nose has been changing color. It was solid black but now has a pinkish strip down the middle and the around the nostrils. Anyone else ever dealt with a nose changing color this late in life? He will be 5 next August. I appreciate all advice.

Hey Guest, I have a 4 month old dane and I can't emphasize enough how much research you must do before jumping into buying a dane. Do you know what not to feed a growing dane pup? What symptoms to look out for on a growing pup? Do you have the financial background to correct any problems that very well may arise? I'm not trying to make you not want to get a dane but they really are a very big job. Everything is about twice as expensive as a normal dog (except shots of course). You really must be cautious when choosing a breeder or you really are setting yourself up for disaster. As far as ear cropping. Our lovely little girl will be staying natural, who could resist. I do not want to inflict this unnecessary pain and torture on her just for looks. I absolutely love kissing those big floppy ears and it is so cute. One ear will flop right into her eye and she'll just stand there looking at you like what I'm cute and you know it! They are a great breed and a loving breed but it comes at a high price. You really must do a ton of research before getting into this. And please if you listen to nothing else on this board at least check into the feeding. Sign up at a great dane forum and chat with the owners/breeders. They are wonderful. Please do not feed your pup any puppy food and make sure your pup is on a great food such as Eagle. I hope you will do your research before getting into this. Keep in mind that they are cute now but in 6 months you will not be able to lift them and they are very strong. You cannot hard hand this breed they are too gentle for that.

Basically the only thing she did was to say quietly I'll tell him. Then she turned to another customer. From her expression and her mannerism I doubt very much the information will be turned over to him. They probably will say I was just a snob. There was a gal behind me in another line who I had spoken with briefly before this encounter. She had just purchased a dane pup and low and behold we will be in the same basic obedience course in January. Funny Coincidence. I want to say though that she didn't seem to take any of my advice to heart. I was even more distraught over this than the breeding comment. I have been doing research for so long on the danes. I tried to just recommend a good food and told her to stay away from all puppy foods but she just said well my breeder said to buy this! I can't stand it. Don't people do any research before buying a dog these days. I'm being harsh but come on, I would never purchase a purebred dog without knowing what I'm getting into. I don't buy a dog for looks! I hate the fact that most dane owners just like the ego booster of having a large dog like that. UGH. Sorry I'm fuming still can't get this trip out of my head. Glad to say I'm never going to PETCO again. Thanks for listening everyone nice to vent sometimes.

Only thing I get at petco is squeeky toys. Had to let them each pick a christmas present. Maybe I'll follow your footsteps and start ordering on the net. Thanks for informing of the behind the scenes action of petco. Never knew. Thanks again.

This is so horrible. I was in Petco (an american pet store) with Kimba and was approached by one of the employees. She said "Oh what a beautiful dane, I have a friend who wants to breed his male. Is yours a girl?" I said yes. "Would you be interested in breeding her?" First of all Kimba is 4 MONTHS OLD! I asked if the male had been shown. "No, he's a pet" Why does he want to breed? "They think it would neat" So I told her everything I have learned in my studies. First of all if the male is to be bred they need to show him to see if he would be worthy of breeding. I asked her what color the guys dane was. "He's black with some white" I told her this was a mantle. I then went on to explain that Kimba would never be bred as she is a merle and I have found that a merle can carry the genetic default to carry the white gene. I explained this to her and told her if this guy is serious he needs to show and then pick a bitch that would be worthy of breeding too, under the supervision of a breeder. Not a pet owner such as myself. Puppies are adorable but I am completely against pet breeding. Why create more puppies. The only puppies out there should be carefully bred by knowledgable dane breeders. Am I being a little too aggresive? Should I have handled this differently? I wasn't mean to her but I explained that Kimba would never be bred and that her friend should be cautious and not breed unless they have a top quality dane. Your thoughts!
