1. You correct pinching behaviour just like biting behaviour. Your dog is taking control of the situation and beginning to think he/she is alpha at a very young age. My recommendation is to startle the pup when she's playing and nips or bites, use a very stern voice and say "NO BITE" and put a toy or nylabone in their mouth to replace the chewing need. You have to get rid of this behaviour now, if you can't seem to reach the puppy go to a trainer or behaviourlist. They will evaluate your pup and set the best plan of action. Good luck and keep us updated.
2. Alright Rott you wanted more you get more. http://directory.google.com/Top/Recreation/Pets/Travel/Transportation/ (directory of transportation services) http://www.transpetonline.com http://www.pettransporter.com/offices.htm (Have Florida Office) http://www.airanimal.com/ (based in Florida) Heres a couple that were recommended by breeders:
Spoke with and recommend a new hauler - Buckeye Dog Haulers Mary Ann or Leslie 740-892-2862. They are going to get $175.00. They plan to cover TN, MO, IL IN and would make quotes on other states. Give them a call if you need a puppy moved! We have used Steve Preston to deliver our puppies several times and have been very pleased ! Please give him a call if you are needing transportation for your pup. 419-230-8645 You can e-mail him at stevep115@yahoo.com He gets 200.00 Note: I think he does not make deliveries until Spring now... Someone else suggested Redwing Haulers 509-684-9110 - cell 509-680-2602 Also understand he gets 200.00 I had one of our customers tell me about a pet transportation service. It is expensive but compares to what one pays for airline shipping and this sounded much better and easier! Pups have to be 9 weeks old and they schedule runs leaving the 1st of the month and the 15th of the month. Anyway, check this out and see what you think! http://www.feathersandfurvanlines.com/animaltransportation.ht m
The last one looks good and if you look at the schedule they should be in Florida the last half of each month on their way west to Oregon. http://www.aimrelocation.com/pettravel/airlines.html (This one gives you info on shipping a pet by air. All airlines!) Does this help? When we were looking into transportation for vacation from Wyoming to Florida we checked into all sorts of stuff. Ended up driving but still had quite a long list of other options. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need any more. There is quite a list. Also some of the members from Florida might be able to help.
3. I didn't post to make anyone mad or upset. I thought you might want an update on how they are doing. Sorry everyone. But the good news is that this disaster has made Oregon government officials as well as, Oregonians aware of the animal abuse problem. See most normal people think "Oh, that couldn't happen here, not in my town." We've had several wonderful rescue groups form since this happened. Also all the businesses have chipped in with raffles, event dinners and lots more. And they are all doing it for the horses. None of these horses will be ridden or can be ridden we know that. But they can live the rest of their lives in peace, being happy, healthy horses. They will all go to caring environments. None will be auctioned or sold to inexperienced people. I just thank god they found out when they did. Yes the hoofs look horrible. The save the horses campaign is growing every day here in Central Oregon. It's hard for me to be too upset as I now know that each of these horses and their foals will now have a chance to experience love and a clean living environment. I will keep donating what I can and pray for them every night. Mad at the people who did it yes, but so glad for the horses. I know it's hard but try to think happy thoughts. They have been saved from a horrible fate and we are all doing what we can to help them every step of the way. :)
4. For anyone who is interested. Attached is a link to an update on the horse case in Central Oregon. Yellow I don't know how I couldn't respond, I'm so sorry. Don't know how that happened. There is some good coming from this case as Oregonians are banning together to save all of the horses and it is also making the people of Oregon become more aware of animal abuse and neglect. Hopefully stricter laws will ensue and people will pay attention to what is happening around them instead of ignoring the problems. http://www.bend.com/news/ar_view^3Far_id^3D7464.htm
5. It sounds to me like this old woman is incredibly lonely and seeking any attention she can get. I know this seems odd but how about baking (or buying) some cookies or pie or something and taking it to her. I agree with Sasha on the Kill them with kindness bit. But she does sound like she is lonely and has no one to talk to and it is making her bitter. Sometimes when you're lonely it's hard to see people around you happy. I'm sure you look pretty happy when you're with your dogs. I personally would make an attempt with a peace offering. I also agree with the flier, tell everyone that they better get off of their a**es and help out or everyone will pay for it.

MOVIES!!!!

 It wouldn't open for me.
7. Tir will now know that love is a part of everyday life. It is possible to be loved and not punished. It sounds like you are doing wonderfully with him. I definately wouldn't give him to anyone unless it is clearly stated that he must be fixed. I am personal believer that no dog should remain outside without supervision. But that is just me. My dogs are inside while we sleep or are at work. Malamutes are a unique breed (never had a GSD) you must earn their respect and love. They will not just give their love to anyone. Whoever gets Tir after you have given him up will have to work just as hard as you did to show him that they deserve his love and attention. A note on Malamutes: Every mal I've known including my own :-? only want cuddles when they ask for it, they are very independent thinkers. They get very attached to their pack but are not an overly affectionate breed of dog. Willow shows me affection by howling with me or at me. It sounds to me like you are being careful with selection and I commend you for that Dogpaddle, it's not always easy to tell who a person will turn out to be once you close the door. :evilbat:
8. Mcobbin don't feel to badly. I think all of us new to the forum have made our mistakes. I've only been here for a couple months myself and have made some judgements in error. But we can't improve if we don't learn from our mistakes, right? I know I've learned. By the way, I think I have yet to welcome HnD. Welcome to the forum. You'll find that everyone has their opinions on this forum, some good some bad. That's the whole point of the forum. It's not here so that we can attack new members and drive them out because they breed. The forum is for discussions on beliefs and education. I don't always like or agree with every post. I hope you will stick around to see how wonderful everyone really is. The one thing we all have in common here is: We all are 100% devoted to our dogs. (we all have to try to remember this)
9. You guys are so silly. Welcome to the forum Kelli. Sounds like you have a wonderful group of fur-kids there. My husband and I would also like to open our own dog rescue. Will be within the next couple of years. We plan on rescuing large breed dogs. It will be nice to exchange ideas and see how you get yours off the ground. (sounds like you already have it started. :D ) Again welcome, this is a wonderful place to be.
10. When living in Wyoming I made a flight to Washington state for my boss. He had purchased a yellow lab pup for hunting. I traveled to Washington and upon arriving spoke with the breeder. We went through all of the contracts (she was nervous about an out of state sale) and I went to Petsmart  (I know bad!) and purchased a soft small dog carrier. I arranged with the airlines and was able to carry this pup with me onto the airline and keep him with me. I personally would never ship one of my dogs in cargo, too scary and dangerous. I'm not sure what the options are these days Anyways, I've looked on the web and here are a couple of links to people who might be able to better give you advice. http://www.pettransporter.com/index.html http://www.pro-pet-transports.com/about.htm (this one looks great, if I had to ship a dog this is the way I would do it.)
11. I'm very impressed Yellow. What a great list of questions! Enough to definately scare the breeders that don't care as much. You have done your homework. When we have more acreage we would like a jersey. You know it's funny most people say a cow doesn't make a good pet, I beg to differ. I have met some wonderful cows and can't wait to bring home my own. Have you heard about the miniature cows yet? Here's a couple of sites. I'm not sure how I feel about that yet, although they are very cute. http://www.tomtownsend-toyland.com/toyland_farms/toyland_farms.htm http://www.miniaturebull.com/ Still haven't decided whether we want a bull or cow. Husband wants to get a pig first, so might be awhile.
12. I am so happy for you both. Paddy is a very handsome boy and he looks great in blue. 'Cheers' Here's to many more victories!
13. Rott N Pit, He is so adorable. Congratulations! What a pretty little face. Yes, we need lots and lots of pictures. When do you get to bring Trace home?
14. I'm completely stumped. 'Bell Sounds', "And your answer is?" 'Reply', Can you please rephrase the question?
15. Hey Yellow, You mentioned the insurance so I did a search and found a link for you. http://home.insurance.com/insurance_options/home/home_dog_bites.asp They list the dog breeds that most insurance companies consider on their black lists. (Wow, glad you brought this up. Great Danes :o ) My insurance company didn't say a darn thing about Kimba being a liability when I added her to the policy. However, I'm not sure too much stock should be put into this as I knew a woman who had a two dalmations and they were wonderful. Now one thing to be aware of are the skin disorders that are affiliated with the breed. Both her dals had serious problems with eyes and skin. (Breeders fault? don't know!) This was quite a few years back. But she loved those dogs more than life itself. I personally don't know much about the dalmation. You might try calling some breeders or rescuers to see how they get around some of the blacklist problems. P.S. I absolutely love your photo album, is your cow a pet? I'm a wannabe pet cow owner. (Someday!)
16. WOW! Have to say they're all very impressive dogs. I'm jealous! When we lived in Wyoming we had a grizzly bear problem. One day we were watching t.v. and Shiloh (our hound) started growling softly. We never think anything of this because she'll growl if a squirrel comes by.Then all of a sudden she attacks the door, Robert gets up to check it out and starts hollering at me. A young male grizzly had decided to check out our dog run (fortunately he didn't get stuck). Shiloh and Willow put up quite a ruckus of noise and he decided to mosey on out of there. And boy do I mean mosey. Robert even grabbed his gun and shot twice in the air, didn't bug the bear one bit. Not exactly heroic but hey they wanted to protect us (or chase the big fuzzy squeeky toy  ) The other time we ran into two older cubs. We were leading our horses as we were all exhausted from riding all day. Next thing we know there are two bears next to us and kind of running alongside. We hop onto our horses and take off, the dogs in the meantime were on the heels of the bears. Scared me half to death, I didn't know if mama bear might still be with her cubs and the cubs were swatting at the dogs. Our dogs and horses received marvelous dinners that night. The horses didn't spook and the dogs scared the bears off. Oh and Mei-Mei, my dogs would be calling every food delivery place in Oregon before calling 911. I wonder if we should all consider preprogramming 911 into our phones. Then if the dogs keep hitting buttons maybe they'll get lucky. Carol, it sounds like you have someone very special in your life. What a dog! :o Also sounds like Hazel has a little more angel in her than people are giving her credit for. A side note: you might consider purchasing a crate or dog run for those times you can't keep an eye on her.
17. People don't give their dogs enough credit. They love us more than we will ever know. The thing that got me about the story was that he went out of his way to save his someone special, he wasn't trained to do what he did. It was emotion. Maybe we should start our own little hero of the year dogomania style. Any little thing that your dog did for you. What do you think? My mal gives me a rope tug toy all the time, can any of you beat that? P.S. There are some other great stories on that site of dogs and their humans and what they did for them. In the archives section! They also have a doggie comic section.
18. This dog went beyond the call of duty in order to save his loving master. This is an uplifting story with a happy ending. http://www.dogsinthenews.com/issues/0204/articles/020405a.htm
19. Thank you everyone. Yes the clarification of aggressive vs. protective helps immensley. I agree that the Fila would be a perfect pet for the right person, with the training and patience to handle a dog such as this. I have found several wonderful breeders while searching and feel that I have learned something about a dog that I didn't know existed a couple of days ago.
20. Thanks for the replies everyone. The more I learn about every breed the better off I am in the longrun. I truly believe this woman should not be breeding. As far as aggressivness, why do we need such an aggressive breed. There really is no longer a call for that. Am I wrong on that?
21. K, Too Funny! Lets hope Artful doesn't see it.
22. Artful, Are you torturing the pigs before you slaughter them? Are you burning them alive, skinning them alive? It doesn't sound like it. So in that case no you are doing nothing wrong. We hunt deer, elk, bear, ducks, etc. with dogs, this is no different from pigs. Having been to a pig farm I can tell you I heard alot of squealing and it is a loud, obnoxious sound. So in my opinion you are nothing like the people in my original post. I'm not trying to win votes, I just strongly believe that there are variations. Torture is nothing like humanely slaughtering for consumption. Changing the subject somewhat, I also believe that the animal being hunted shouldn't be caught and kept in horrible situations and made to suffer for days or weeks. I am completely abhored by the way US slaughterhouses treat the horses they purchase. Being a sensible person I know that there is a supply and demand for horse meat. Basically if you're going to kill something do it as quickly as possible and don't let it suffer. Make any sense at all???
23. I ran across this link and I believe this woman should not be breeding. Number one, her first breeding was "by acciden" OOPS. Number two, she's breeding to make more aggresive dogs. Ugh. I don't have experience with the breed but went to several sites on the breed and did alot studying up after running across this womans site. http://www.filabrasileirodogs.com/beethoven_story.htm One quote comes to mind: What a shame because he is so perfect. So I didn't breed Beethoven. Then one morning I heard my female Fila cry out, I rushed out the back door to find her and Beethoven in holy wedlock! I was so upset! Then my son said "Don't worry mom they will be great pups and maybe he won't throw the white! I said, "Oh yea sure!" Well my son was correct! Beethoven's pups all had a full black mask, a small amount of white on their chest. All the puppies had big heads, large bones, and where very massive. That first litter of Beethoven's puppies are 2 years old now, very large 175 to 190 pounds, and very aggressive like Beethoven. Any of you have experience with this breed?
24. I'll admit I'm a carnivore. I eat meat, but as a personal preference for not devouring my pets I wouldn't eat horse or dog. However I accept that all cultures are different. I am not against the consumption of animals of any kind, but torture just makes me raw with anger. I believe I could spit venom right now. How can anyone think torture will make a nicer meat, that I don't understand.

Bravo Ali, I think you said what the rest of us were thinking but didn't know how to get it out. I applaud you whole heartedly.
