1. thanks you guys  form the bottom of my paws......love, Winston!!
2. 1) If the dog is 9 years it must have been at the parents house for 3 years previous to college so why not now especially as it has so little time left (expected age 8-10 years) this is NOT a young guy, he's a non-traditional student coming back...he's lived in an animal friendly apartment for about 10 years now, but he is facing financial problems that is causing him to rely on the cheaper rent of renting from parents. 2) The person must be old enougfh to get a job and stand on his own two feet by now if the dog means that much to him why not make the effort? yes he IS old enough  just not very smart......he's actually twice my age, and I'm teaching his college class so there's another problem. 3)Are you sure the person is not using this tear jerking story as part of his Psychology study? to see how other students and people in general react to such a scenario I would think this, except after i tabulated his final grade for the semester, i realize he's not really smart enough to concoct such a scheme...plus, i had actually assigned the class an experimental methods project, asking them to create an experiment, carry it out, write up the proposal, methods, blah, blah......he couldn't do that either   GOOD NEWS ANYWAY!!! i gave him the links on this site, and he did NOTHING!!! :evilbat: so, i took her in myself. had to keep her from wanker for a couple of days, but i took her home at thanksgiving, and was able to place her in the home of my highschool best friend. I've known Amy for 24 years now, and i wouldn't trust any one more. Plus she has 63 acres for the old girl to play on :P :P . her husband works nights, and she feels uncomfortable sleeping alone at nights. now she feels very safe, her husband feels more at ease leaving his wife home alone, and the dog is loved very much. spoiled already in fact!! so, i'm sorry i couldn't reply faster K  , but everything is going beautifully!!
3. hey, wow!! i've been off for a while during finals!! he he he...YEAH!! someone mentioned me in my lonesome absence!! Yes i DO own a boston terrier, a male named winston, and a mixed boston/ pit , wanker. OOOH, not to say i'm partial, but i L-O-V-E this breed. I've had winston for 11 years now, and i couldn't have ASKED for a better dog!! it only took us one..(YES 1) day to housetrain him, he is loved by everyone who has ever known him, and those people that do know him all refer to him as "The Little Gentleman". It's that perfect breed that is just toooooo fun in the puppy stage, calms down in adulthood, but never loses that spark and overzealous playfulness. i swear, (and god forbid it) that winston will probably die with a fetch toy in his mouth!! And he can be playing like maddness is just around the corner, and all i have to say is "Calm" and he sits right in his tracks and gives me a kiss! As for wanker, he acts a lot like a pit, but there is NO denying the boston in him. they are one of the smartest dog breeds i've ever owned. it took one week to teach wanker to go to the door at bathroom time, to fetch, to roll, and to lay. later it only took two days to teach sitting up. and i must also mention here that they are great with kids!!! so i hope this helps!! i would definately suggest one as a wonderful new family member!! 4. for anyone reading here, the petition is up. go to my new topic under "everything about dogs" i think it is named "The petition is posted" or something similar.
5. thank you so much for the petition site. everyone i have talked to has tried to discourage me by telling me about how difficult it will be, how much legislation is involved, blah blah blah red tape blah blah blah..... it may take me about a week or so to get it up, because i'm writing a thesis for doctoral school that is due Jan. 30th :o :o !!! but this site seems so easy!!! again thank you so much!! you wouldn't believe how common BOTH of these practices are in deep south regions!! thank you guys so much for the support. as SOON as i get this site up and the petition running, i'll set up a seperate post with a link so all my good friends here can sign!!!! :P
6. well, i e-mailed Mrs. Sue Legg who is apparently in charge of the animal control in Horseshoe Bend. This is what she wrote to me: "(regarding any strays you feed) You are liable for damages incurred by the animal, by "harboring" the animal - allowing it to be on your property. Also, if you do not "fix" the animal, you are creating a monster in allowing unrestricted reproduction, resulting in a whole lot of new "strays". sue Ok. I agree with the part about fixing the animal...i'm an advocate for fixing all dogs when keeping them fertile is not absolutely necessary. but "Harboring" the animal??? And i'd probably refrain from calling a stray a "MONSTER" :evilbat: simply because some stupid human discarded it. My mom told me that apparently a lot of local people have been opposing this new ordinance as well. so, maybe if they can get the support of those from all over the country/world they'll realize how ridiculous this all is. i realize the problems associated with helping continue the cycle of strays, but until their butts get out there and start collecting strays, someone has got to step up to at least keep the animals alive...and it appears that plenty of people were willing to take this task on, if they felt it was necessary to create an ORDINANCE to stop it!! It seems as though they are trying to let the strays starve to death to control the population....not the answer people!! :x i must give the town's chamber of commerce credit for running a legitimate shelter that seems oriented towards adoptions, though. they have a website up showing the adoptions that have been successful. http://members.tripod.com/~doglegg/HAPPILY.htm and they do have an interesting site to warn people about what can happen to your pet if you run a "Free to a good home" ad http://members.tripod.com/~doglegg/charlie_parker.html (Very distressing!!) but regardless, this ordinance is ridiculous!! Her reply seemed to infer a sort of scare tactic...."sure go ahead and "Harbour" these "monstors", but let them on your property and then you're responsible if it bites someone..." I'm not sure if anyone is still interested, but if you still see something a bit unsettling with this new law, you can e-mail them at slegg@centuryinter.net
7. thanks connie, i should have some sort of reply from their chamber of commerce by tomorrow!
8. most of our hounds come from a line we have bred of German Plotts. My dad uses them for hunting, but he only sells them to close friends and people he meets at hunting shows who have good records. we also have a clause in all of our contracts that says if anyone decides to sell a dog we sold them they must sell back to us or give us the name of the potential buyer so we can determine if they are scrupulous owners. I got my GSD from my dad for a birthday present. He bought her from a breeder in Germany who raises them for the police academy there. They are beautiful dogs, and still have the true confirmation that has been lost through breeding in the US. My Boston terrier was purchased 16 years ago from an elderly couple who really just loved bostons, and raised them so they would always have them around. They only bred one litter a year to give their bitch rest, and to keep the population down. Those are my happy stories. But how i got Wanker was really a tragedy waiting to happen. a couple of backyard breeders raised both pits and bostons. they allowed their pit to breed their boston bitch, and when the puppies were born, they knew right off they were not purebred. To keep prospective buyers from seeing the "half-breeds" and thinking they didn't have clean lines, they decided to kill the puppies at birth. In the deep south, there is an old archaic way to distroy puppies. This is usually done by drowning the puppies by putting them in a burlap sack, tying it off, attaching a large rock to the sac and throwing it into a pond.....as horrible as that may seem, it is nothing compared to what the other form of killing is. The other way people destroy puppies in some backwoods places is called "Knocking them in the head"......in this case, the person will hold the newborn puppy by its back legs, pull back like they are throwing a baseball, and slam its tiny head into the side of a tree. :x When i first told people on this site about these practices, i didn't even go into detail about the formalities of the process. But, this is what waited for Wanker. SO, at the gas station, my dad overheard the owners saying they'd had puppies born that morning, but they were going to knock them in the head. so, dad went up to the owners, talked for a little while, and followed them home, where he collected all the puppies and brought them home. there was a lot of bottle feeding involved!!! but, finally he placed all of the puppies in good homes....one of them MINE!!! :) :) so that's where i got wanker. i know this is a L-O-N-G post, and rather sad, but i think it's important for people to understand what kind of things still go on out there. I'm currently trying to get a law passed making this sort of act illegal. if i can get an electronic petition going on a site, hopefully everyone who reads this will sign it. Once i get that site going, i'll be back to get everyone the address!
9. guys...sorry i've been off here for so long, i've been taking finals. my mother just told me about the stupidest city ordinance in HISTORY!!! :x according to the local newspaper in the town of Horseshoe Bend, AR. the city has passed an ordinance making it ILLEGAL to feed strays!!! Now, i know that the ultimate goal is to collect these poor souls and get them into loving homes, but the simple fact is, until they GET put in homes, they are hungry and starving, which is often compounded by the VERY cold Arkansas winters!! I'm in the process of e-mailing the chamber of commerce in that town as i am writing this, so i WILL be updating everyone about this. Considering i have 50 lbs of dogfood and 10lbs of cat food in my utility closet at this MOMENT just for strays, this INFURIATES ME    If this turns out to be true, will anyone help me by e-mailing this back@sswards town and all of its retarded policymakers????? PLEASE?
10. hey everyone!! i have a problem...i teach an experimental psychology lab at arkansas state university. i tend to get into first name basis with most of my students, and so most of them feel free to tell me what is going on in their lives. A student in my tuesday lab made an announcement to the class today that he is being forced to move back into his parents house after 6 years, and they will NOT allow him to bring his spayed, female, housebroken, well behaved rottweiler!!! She is 9 years old, so i asked him how he could stand to let her go, given that after 9 years of undivided attention and unconditional love, she will not understand what she has doen to make him leave her. He promptly began to cry in front of the entire class!! :( so, he said that if he does not find a home soon, he may have to have her euthanized. then he said he thought that may be the best thing, as she would just fall asleep, and would never live to think that he stopped loving her and wanted to get rid of her. Personally, i'm very upset. She is not registered, but is apparently very well behaved. He said that her most favorite pasttime is laying on the couch....DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I SHOULD GO TO FIND A HOME FOR HER!?!?! is there some specific site for rottweiler lovers? please help me, i think he has to make his decision soon!!
11. what host are you using to display your photos? i use villagephotos.com. sometimes when you put up the link it is too long, and will go to the next line which will cause the red X  but if you click on the picture you want to use then scroll down to the link named "Image URL for EZBoard Messageboards" it will usually be shorter and will work!! then you just paste the link onto your message, then highlight it, then click the Img button!! hope this helps!
12. Kaaaaaaaaaaaa-AaaaaaaY!!! :o between you and eric, i'm spending all my rent money on Kleenex!!
13. i KNOW wanker dreams....his eyes halfway open and roll around and sometimes he growls...his lips curl up showing his teeth, and he'll growl and grump. other times he has nightmares, and he'll whimper and flail his legs around. i say his name very softly until he wakes up, and he always runs to me and crawls in my lap and makes this face like "Fanks mom, i was gettin' chased by a Bull Mastiff, and i'm a LITTLE boy!!!" no offense to Bull Mastiffs, shannon!!
14. GSD?!?!?! can you say "Hip Dysplasia?" if this lady is serious about getting her dog in shape......ever heard of a treadmill? i think i would love to look this lady in the eyes....just to prove to myself that INDEED there were dollar signs in them $$$. only charlie brown could make the appropriate response to this.....AARRRGGGHHHH!!
15. we put up wanker's stocking (which by the way is clear, so he can see the toys)....needless to say he's been sitting in the middle of the living room staring at his stocking on the wall, and making this low growling kind of whine....."Mom!!! I KNOW that is my stock-ring....can't you just give it to me now? i'll still like them on christmas......i promise!!":x-mas:
16. my dad has raised german plott hounds for about 23 years now, and i've trained SEVERAL puppies to hunt in that time...so, i'm just going on my experience with ONE breed. but, as far as i have seen, a good hunting bitch will hunt regardless of her ahem, condition  . one thing you must take into consideration is your hunting partners. if you are running with other males, the focus may turn from furry woodland creatures, to a furry woodland romp very quickly!! also, you've got to know your bitch. some girls really WANT to get pregnant. these are the ones who may run off to the hills looking for a man, faster than an ellie may hillbilly!! but the actual estrus should have no impact on her performance, so take her out for a nice run!!
17. ha ha ha ha ha  !!! now i can show this to jeremy!! he he he...Trinity...Oh MY Goodness!! i thought i was going to die laughing when you were talking about how yours goes through ALL the tricks really quickly when treats are at stake....wanker will sit, lay, roll, sit up and high-five us all in five seconds if there's a scooby snak involved!! and the part about the cat! he he...wanker has learned that when we make the sssssk! sound, "sissy" is in trouble, and he runs over to her and bumps her with his nose....don't THINK we don't talk for him then......."sissy, oo betta sop it, sop it wite now, a-fore mom an dad gets oo!! My doin' this for ooo own good!!"
18. o.k.....this weekend, my future sister in law and her husband came to stay for the weekend and brought their two dogs, a german shepard/husky mix and a sort of terrier mix. knowing that my precious wanker is just not socialized well to strange dogs, i knew that it was in his and the other dogs' best interest to board him in the kennel at his vets. they have a large yard to play in, and they are walked three times a day, with a special "fetch" time. he loves it there, but i swear i cried myself to sleep that night  i just kept thinking of him laying there wondering if i was coming back, why i left him there.....you know!! anyway, we got him back the next day and of course the obligatory puppy talk ensued...so, now my fiance wants to know if we're the only people in the world that have this sort of "speaking-to-myslef-for-my-dog" language. i assured him it's just a dog lover thing, and we're not alone...he needs proof.....so, if anyone is willing, give us an example of how your dog talks...and you KNOW what i'm talking about!!! :o Here's an example of how "Wanker" talks to us: "Mom, seeweeuswee! My need my monkeyball, mane! And mane, is we goin' a na powk soon? my needs ta wun mom, i mean my need ta wun wike da win!!! An how about some more fwossy paws mom! My wuv dem fings!! And while we on na sub-djek, when was da wast time we went ta na store a get TOYS???" note- for those who are confused: seeweeuswee - AKA seriously Powk - AKA the PARK fwossy paws - AKA Frosty Paws, a doggy ice cream Monkey ball - his favorite toy that sounds like a mad monkey when he bites it.
19. i'm going nuts worrying about this.....is the puppy doing any better?
20. i'm sorry to hear about your situation. it's tough when something you love so much causes so much distress....kind of puts you in a predicament. but, i understand what you mean!! recently my fiance moved in, and we began moving the furniture from room to room. to my horror, my lovley, well mannered, house training guru dog sat right in the floor in front of us and pooed!!! he's 3 years old and has NEVER done anything like this before. before the week was over, he had gone #2 on the stairs twice and even layed in my lap on the couch and peed!! I was appauled and bewildered. but, i took into consideration that this was a difficult time for him. Everything familiar in his little "den" was getting turned upside down. especially with smaller dogs who live indoors, your house is their WORLD!! dogs are like kids, and they both need stability to function. studies have shown similar results in children who are experiencing change or trauma.....so i guess just keep the love coming, and ignore her bad behaviors whenever possible. remember that even negative attention "saying 'no' and 'bad girl'" are reinforcing. they ensure that your little girl is getting her fair share of attention in this new environment. i hope that everything works out for you, it did with my little boy!! keep the faith.
21. how about Camp Canine, Mutt Meadows, or Pet Plantation?
22. since you're interested, i thought i would tell you a bit more about this. The flea drops that caused this in our dog were manufactured by the Hartz company. After going through this ordeal, we discovered that this has been an on-going issue with Hartz. i've not heard of any problems with the flea drops from other companies, but i've tended to stay safer than sorry from now on, and don't use the drops from ANY company. instead i refer any flea problems directly to my vet!! You can find out more information on the health problems and litigation associated with Hartz flea drops at the following websites: http://www.elversonpuzzle.com/biospot.html http://www.pandecats.com/x/hartz_warning_update.htm http://www.kmov.com/localnews/kmov_localnews_020506_fleaproducts.5fd5b167.html http://www.wjhl.com/news/localnews/MGBO0TVZS3D.html http://www.khou.com/news/local/KHOU020520_jw_hartzfolo.4503dda.html http://www.wildlifeprotection.net/everything/eduFleas.html
23. has this dog been exposed to any of the flea drops that you put on the shoulders? We had a beautiful, strong, healthy male hound dog, who had never had an illness in his life. two days after applying these drops to his shoulders, his back legs failed and within the week he could not stand. it came to the point that we had to hold him up, and hold his leg up for him so that he could urinate. after finding out from friends that they had similar results from using the drops, we bathed the dog furiously and gave him antibiotics and dextrose. it took a while, but he eventually recovered. it took a while for the weight to come back, but he's fine today. i'm hoping that this helps you. i'm very sorry to hear about your friends puppy  --robin
