I will never own a Chinese Crested. a Chow, Sharpei, Dalmation or any of the small terrier breeds. I have always owned Rottweilers or GSD's..never had an aggressive one. Have never owned a small dog until 6 months ago and now I have a little Cavalier pup. He is gorgeous and so easy going. He gets along so well with my Rottweilers.

When you say double ear infection do you mean yeast + bacteria in one ear or an infection in both ears. We had the yeast + bacteria in one ear only. I had the problem with my Rott when I was taking her to the hydrotherapy pool. We tried various antifungals and antibiotics to no avail. We also tried ear cleaning solution followed by ear drops concurrently with this treatment. The vet finally decided he would anaesthetise my dog and flush her ear out. That together with ear cleaner and drops for another 10 days did the trick and we have never had further problems. I have the recipe for blue powder but have never used it. I am quite happy to pass it on to anyone who may need it. Firstly though you need to find out by swab if the infection is bacteria or yeast.

Australia's most dumped, aggressive & barkiest dog breed
anne3149 replied to Aroura's topic in Aggression
The thing is, Don Burke did not do any research whatsoever. He got a list from the RSPCA who are notoriously bad at identifying breeds in any case. Research would be to get information from all pounds, shelters and rescuers. Chances are the list would mostly consist of the cross bred puppy mill dogs he has been promoting for so many years. -
I am lucky in that we have a huge dog park in the middle of suburbia. This park would be about 10 acres and has hills, valleys, bush trees etc., it is fairly heavily treed and plenty of flat ground lawn. On the down side it also contains an unfenced childrens playground!!!!!! I have been using this park for 4 years with my well trained Rottweiler who is very friendly. Never in that time have I seen any aggression by other dogs. We owners simply do not take agressive dogs to the park. In addition to my friendly Rottweiler, who is champion at reading doggie body language at a distance and will stay away from some dogs, I also have a dog aggressive rescue Rottweiler that I have never taken to that park. This dog is never off leash when outside my property. In any event the park is so vast and there are rarely many dogs there at the same time there is plenty of space to walk the other way, which is what I do when my friendly girl is suspicious of another dog. The park is frequented by regulars and we all know eachother as do our dogs. The one exception I have seen over the years is a very nasty little pomeranian with an equally nasty owner. This dog is always kept on lead and everyone else gives this dog and owner a very wide berth. The owner has a walking stick which she waves threateningly should another dog come anywhere near her. I really don't know why she doesn't use one of the many other parks in our area which are ON lead parks.

Ear Cropping has been illegal in Australian for about 20 years I believe. A good thing the way I see it. What purpose does ear cropping serve rather than to make dogs look 'HARD'. What purpose is there to having a dog look 'hard' in the first place. I have Rottweilers and I don't want them to look hard, thereby perpetuating the false impression the media gives to this breed. I loathe the look of ear cropped dogs. I think it's ugly and these breeds usually have beautiful velvet ears and the dog looks softer. I would never, ever crop a dogs ears. Cropped dogs look quite strange and not attractive at all to me. Tail docking: I do have 2 docked Rottweilers. They were docked at birth by the breeder. A newborn does not feel pain but each day the nerves will gain more feeling. 3 days would be the limit if I were ever to dock a dog, which I would NOT. In saying that, docking now is also illegal in Australia and I would be quite happy to have my breed undocked. They look great with full tails. I understand that in some breeds their is a chance of tail damage and tail splitting by being hit against walls etc., I am not against docking for the benefit of the dog. I am against it for the benefit of the owner.

How sad and what a completely horrible person. Fancy being married to something like that. I'm afraid I would either leave him or kick him out. Did anyone ever report him for cruelty? This says a lot for the need to license people before they are allowed the priviledge of owing a dog. I would not allow this person to even own a stuffed toy. At least he can do no more harm to the poor little pup.

A great job done by all who went out to bat for Justin Taylor. Congratulations to all and especially a Magistrate who actually listened and took heed of the evidence presented. Perhaps now there is a precedent things may just change for the better in Queensland. Well done!

Yep it's good that he and his show have been tossed out. He has about 3 more shows to go to air and then it's goodbye to the Berk at long last. What a shame he never did a segment on his show from one of the pounds and showed the viewers how many of his 'designer dogs' were killed each day. He should also have shown us how stressed the dogs are in the pound situation and just what the plight is of these abandoned and unwanted dogs. This too may have made people a little bit more aware of just what the results were of not desexing their dogs, particularly designer dogs. I am of the opinion that only ethical registered breeders should breed dogs and not until they have been tested for any defects. I have had dogs all my life and would not breed them because a) I don't know enough and b) there are too many being killed in pounds as it is. I have nothing at all against cross bred dogs but I do have a lot against this idiot for telling people that they do not inherit the problems of the parents. He just made it all look too easy and people who were neither prepared to train nor learn about their dogs were flocking out to buy the latest cross breed he deemed was the current fashion. Then to go and breed with them because Berk said it was easy. It's not the dogs fault that they were dumped but the irresponsible and unprepared owners who believed what this moron told them.

What a pity Don Burke didn't give the dumping rates of the cross bred puppy farm dogs he has promoted for years on his show. He would be largely responsible for the upsurge in puppy mills in Australia breeding cross bred, so called 'designer dogs'. The small white fluffies that are abandoned in the pounds because the negligent owners never had them clipped and they end up so matted they can't walk. Don Burke is a gardener and is certainly no expert on dogs which is painfully obvious every time he waffles on about them. Also the RSPCA is only one pound. Why did he not do a cross section of all pounds and rescues to get a more accurate view to present. The simple fact is that 90% of dogs that end up abandoned in pounds and shelters are cross bred. This is the result of his promoting the mythical 'hybrid vigor'. Fortunately for the canine world his show has been axed and not before time. Hoorah!!!! Good riddance Burke.

You can give Cranberry capsules to keep the urine acidic and unviable for bacteria to survive. My young Rottweiler had a couple of UTI's when she was a few months old and I have been giving her a Cranberry capsule every day and she has never had a repeat infection since. I have heard Cranberry juice does the same thing but I don't know how you get the dog to drink it. I put the capsule in soft cheese and put it in the food bowl with her dinner..no problems at all.

Ah you are all giants. I am 4'11" and slight in build......can manage two Rottweilers though. Must admit I walk them one at a time.

Naive perhaps???? You con me and lie to me once then shame on you. You con me and lie to me twice...shame on me!!!!!!!

If I came across that child zapping a dog with an e collar I would remove the collar from the dog and tell the child to have her parents come around to collect it. That way at least you are saving the dog from more immediate pain. I would then tell the parents (if they bothered to come and collect) that the child was abusing and hurting the dog. No one should ever use an e collar on a dog without proper instruction. E collars are not about delivering a shock and causing pain, they are about stimulation at a level where the dog can just barely feel it. Just enough stimulation to gain their attention, whatever level of stim. that may be. I certainly would be as polite as I could manage to the parents, I'm sure with great difficulty. If that failed I would inform them they will be reported for cruelty to an animal and hopefully will earn a nice big fine.

What on earth is a Lapsa Apsa???????? edited to say: Ok I guess that would be a Lhasa Apso.

X: Good to see that things are working out for you. The eye problem is called Entropian. I had a Rott that had the same problem, it's hereditary. She had surgery on both eyes. Entropian is when the eyelid rolls in. Ectropian is when the eyelid rolls out.

In the instance meant in my original post the term 'culling' refers to the actual killing of pups or in some cases older dogs who do not sell or are not show prospects. I see nothing wrong with 'culling' in the sense that breeders will desex their dogs and 'cull' them from the breeding process and either sell them or keep them and have them desexed. It is the killing of deliberately bred dogs that I am against. I was horrified that a breeder knows their bitch will produce 10-12 pups but they they only had homes for 3 or 4 so the rest were killed either shortly after birth or at a later date if the pups were not sold. I also do not agree that breeders should deliberately breed and then take the surplus pups to a shelter. The shelters are overflowing with dogs who have been neglected/abandoned looking for homes without breeders adding to the numbers. Surely a breeder is responsible for the lives he/she decides to bring into this world and if they know their breed is not popular then don't breed the bitch at all just to kill her puppies. Thanks to all for not flaming me here. I was seriously flamed on the other forum. The breeders closed ranks and attacked, telling me that I was not a breeder so could not speak from experience. I don't think you need to be a breeder to disagree with the killing of a planned breeding.

This subject came up on another forum. It was stated that breeders of the not so popular breeds (Afghans and Bloodhounds were mentioned) are breeding to keep the blood lines going and killing the pups that are either not show prospects or, later in the life of the pup, if they can't be sold, they are killed. Hypothetically, if there are 10 in the litter and they can only place 4, the other 6 are killed. Some are killed at birth and others allowed to grow a little older in the hope they will be sold or maybe turn out to be a show prospect. My personal opinion is that if no one wants to own a particular breed then the breeders should not be breeding them only to kill them because there are no homes. These breeders know their breed is not popular before they decide to mate the dogs. These are perfectly healthy puppies, not the ones with health problems. I got seriously flamed for disagreeing with their practises. It is sad to see a breed die out but there is a use by date on all things in life and if no one wants to own a particular breed anymore then why breed them to kill them just to try and keep a breed going. I wonder should I have put this question in the debates section of the forum. If the mods think so then please move the post. .

Sarahstaff what a beautiful Staffy. One of the nicest looking Staffs I have ever seen. Gorgeous :D

Bless you X for trying so hard with these dogs. I have been thinking about Patti and I commend you for caring so much. If Patti is generally a nice dog and is not aggressive to all dogs then it is obviously a heirachy thing and desexing should make life easier. I too had to keep two dog seperate for at least 8 months. It is difficult until you get into the swing of things and then it becomes automatic. All dogs in my house are desexed and eventually the two who had the occasional spat became friends. They were together only when I was there to supervise to start with and eventually they learned to ignore eachother or even play together and peace was restored. Thank you again for sparing Patti's life. Many would give up on the situation and it takes a dedicated and loving dog owner to go the extra yards to save the life of a dog. No one could ask for more.

My heart is broke, the girls are fighting again.
anne3149 replied to xavierandrea's topic in Everything about dogs
In actual fact Cairn I would say that people have been very understanding of the situation X finds herself in but we can't help but be sorry about the outcome of the situation. I think you are taking a bit of poetic licence to say every single member has badgered X. They have not. That plus the fact that the details are posted on a public forum and people are entitled to their opinion whether or not you agree with it. I don't see that your terrier biting you is in any way similar to what has happened with X and the Rotties. The subject is about her dogs fighting and her son inadvertantly getting bitten. Nothing at all to do with an owner bite from a small dog. X has my sympathy and concern and I feel for her deeply but that does not change the facts of the situation. -

anne3149 replied to xavierandrea's topic in Everything about dogs
The problem I have with all this X is that you kept making the same mistake over and over again. The dogs did not get along, they kept fighting, your son kept getting bitten and still the dogs had access to eachother and to your son. Nothing changed so the situation just kept repeating itself. If you keep doing the same thing then why would you expect the outcome to be different. I really do sympathise with you in this awful situation and am very sad that Patti will be put to sleep. We can only hope that others who find themselves in this situation will take heed of this thread and never let dogs (particularly entire ones) who do not get along have any access to eachother at all...even in training. One person cannot handle 3 large dogs, two of whom want to fight eachother. A situation such as this requires a handler for each dog. I have been in a situation where I had to keep two dogs seperated from eachother...it is not easy and it takes vigilance but it can be done. A very sad outcome for the whole situation. -

anne3149 replied to xavierandrea's topic in Everything about dogs
The dog is not human aggressive according to X.. Anyone who intervenes in a dog fight takes a bit chance of being bitten. This bite was not directed at a human, the human got in the way and the dog is in a high drive when in the midst of a fight. It's protection drive. Her survival drive. I also think that the dogs should have been seperated after the first fight but they weren't. If I were X and I could keep the dogs seperate then I would keep both dogs. Two Rottweiler bitches close in age do not often get along together. They may do but it is not common. Better to have a male and female. If you take on two females then you should probably expect problems somewhere down the track. What a shame that this dog may lose it's life for something that was not her fault. I have two females. One is 10 or 11 (rescue) and the other one is 3yo. No problems due to the age difference. I would not take on another female closer in age to either of them. -

anne3149 replied to xavierandrea's topic in Everything about dogs
I imagine these two female Rottweilers are close in age if they are fighting. That's why it is always advisable to have either a large age difference in the same sex or have 1 female and 2 males as the males do get along together better than females. I have two females. One is 3 years old and the other is 10 years old...never a fight between them. My old girl is a rescue dog too and I would not have taken her if she was closer in age to my existing female. I think, if you cannot keep the girls seperated 100% of the time then to rehome one of them is your only option. It is heartbreaking to have to part with one of your dogs but if they can't be permanently seperated the alternative scenario is much worse. Jacqueline C: Please do not attribute a dog fight to human aggression. Rottweilers suffer enough unwarranted bad publicity as it is. There was no mention of human aggression at all. Rottweiler owners get their back up the same as Pit Bull owners do when human aggression is wrongly attributed to the breed. -
I agree with Tammy. I could not have just dropped the dog at a shelter and walked away knowing full well what its fate was. I would have been there when it took its final breath, to offer comfort and reassurance. I really think it's a bit much to expect shelters to obedience train dogs. Sure they should be able to assess temperament and make sure vicious dogs are not rehomed but gently put to sleep. It seems this little dog was not suitable for rehoming. Shelter staff a very busy just looking after the dogs people dump. Obedience training is the responsibility of the new owner IMO.
