1. Sad in a way isn't it. What can you do though.. get the animals neutered (can you do that with large cats?)? I have no idea if that's even an appropriate solution- the best thing would be to have lots of room for these beautiful creatures. There probably is a lot we'll never be told about the health of the cub either :-? but the dog hey! 8)
2. Maybe she has a bit of Lab too? or mastiff (going on size here) ? Whatever- she is adorable! and going to be pretty big by the sounds of things... her feet are quite big and that's said to be a good indication of size. She's beautiful-looking! :)

Dog breeds

Another good resource is: http://www.petnet.com.au/selectapet/selectapet.html You type in your lifestyle, and the particular characteristics that the dog you want should have (eg. shorthaired), and it gives you a list of breeds based on your selections. Hope this helps.
4. Good idea. So.... what is the next breed?
5. from www.news.com.au. Not strictly about the dog, but yet another example of what amazing creatures dogs are! :D I wonder why they crossbred lions and tigers? thoughts? Lion-tiger cub suckled by dog August 29, 2002 A LION at Nanjing Zoo in eastern China has given birth to the country's first tiger-lion hybrid cub, which is being suckled by a dog, state media said today. Born to the lion Tiantian, the cub, with a lion's body and colouring of a tiger, was rejected and left hungry about eight hours after birth. "A female black dog was introduced to the cub and now feeds the tiger-lion once every two hours, occasionally stopping to groom her adopted 'puppy'," said the Xinhua news agency. The cub, which weighed 1.1kg at birth - similar to other big cat cubs - is in good condition and now weighs 1.2kg, the report said. Due to a lack of space at the zoo, lions and tigers are raised together for about three years, including Tiantian, another lion and five tigers. Experts said it was uncertain whether the tiger-lion cub could survive. The Associated Press
6. :( I hope Lily's tests all turn out ok... Fingers crossed and hope for the best. BK sends a big sloppy kiss to her!
7. thanks for that- will try the high-five trick! 8)
8. I'm not sure how to stop the leash yanking, Tigress. I saw a corgi (sorry corgilady!) doing the exact same thing today. One of my grandad's dachshunds used to do it as a pup, but grew out of it. I guess you both have to have the same approach, otherwise you'll confuse Ruby. The alpha challenge is probably part of it- had a similar thing with Blitz, he would only behave well for certain people, and others he'd get away with murder if he knew they'd let him. Obedience has taught me heaps about how much of what I do affects his behaviour, and I've only been to 2 classes! Obedience will be great for your dog and yourself  There are people here who know LOTS about training, I'm sure you'll get some good advice. (how did you get her to high-five btw?) But I am so proud of my little (well, big) boy. He is doing so well! :D
9. It just makes me so sick and angry and upset, why why WHY do people take on the huge responsibility of having pets if they can't/won't look after them!!!!! :x   I swear, if this world had less people and more animals (the 4-legged variety) we would be a hell of a lot better off. Maybe a separate planet instead of an island?!
10. Glad to know the dogs are ok, what about the kids! Also, I've been told that onion and avocado are toxic to dogs... and of course chocolate... (actually I wish chocolate was toxic to ME! :D )
11. Took Blitz to his first obedience class yesterday (well, 7 years of age isn't too late is it!)... I was beyond amazed at his faultless behaviour! I have even returned to the check chain as his ghastly pulling has been reduced significantly, he can almost walk beside me with a loose lead now... whether this was the Halti or the obedience I don't know! :D Agility here we come eh!
12. I've got two now! :D much easier to get around with two paws than one... 8)
13. Guest, I'd like to know what sort of dog(s) you have because it's always interesting to see what breeds are around the board. You may not need the *approval* of other forum users but seem quite eager to pick on any slights against guests, sometimes justified and sometimes not. S'pose you wouldn't have Bassets either if you don't like drool! :D
14. sasha, I know the runt is the smallest (one of the few things I know about breeding!), it makes sense now if the older, larger dog was more dominant over the younger, smaller dog. Thanks! 8)
15. There was definitely a runt in the dachshund litter. The breeders rang Grandad after he'd got the first dog (Oscar) and asked him if he'd like the runt (Fritz) otherwise he'd be put down the next day. (is that standard practice?) Grandad being a softy, agreed. :D Neither dog died of cancer and they were both entire (and not bred from BTW). I thought maybe Oscar was top dog because he was the first one to call Grandad's "home", but I don't know how valid that is- when Rinny (GSD) moved in with us, he instantly became top dog over BK, who's much younger. They're about the same size and neutered, but I thought it weird BK wasn't more territorial. I still think if you're not going to breed from a dog then you should have it neutered, but in the end it's up to the individual. K- I think the rec. age for neutering is 6 months min. in Australia? Though that may not help you in clog-land ;) (from a fellow clog-wog) :D
16. OMG the pocket rocket :D At the park there is this this fiesty little JRT, Zoe, who followed Mia (Bull Terrier/GSD X) around, yapping continuously, and kept taking Mia's stick away from her, this tiny little dog going up to a mass of muscle and teeth and grabbing her stick right from her jaws.
17.
Some men refuse to neuter their pets because of their own problems on the subject of sexuality.
LOL I've heard that too, in fact there was an absolutely classic quote about men and castration of pets on the web somewhere- I'll dig it out and post it one day. Also re: litter dominance/fighting. Can anyone tell me if the "runt" of a litter is born first, last, or in between and what is the main dominance factor, birth order or physical size? I ask because Grandad had 2 male dachshunds and one was the runt, both left entire, the bigger (and maybe not older) dog was the dominant one. I know there are lots of situations where the small Westie reigns over the gigantic Rotty... but with related dogs what's the story?
18. This is a good site to go to for bloat info: http://www.canismajor.com/dog/bloat.html Apparently most breeders and vets think genes do play a small part in bloat, the info is all at the site. In Australia there are some breed clubs (eg. Weimaraners, Bassets) that believe stomach tacking is a good pre-emptive measure, from what I have read anyway
19. read this before but it's still funny! How'd you get your Boxer animation?? It's cool.
20. It probably is a swear word koolie!! My dog has his "tantrum" bark that he uses when he's having, well, a tantrum eg. when he's hyper and I go inside (and then he bites my ankles), or when we're in the car going to the dog park and he thinks it's taking too long "are we there yet? are we there yet?", or when I pat another dog and ignore him... it's funny  anyone else's do that?
21.  it's too bad, K, when there are no bite marks! (but lots of sneaky chop-licking and a full belly  )
22. hmm sounds like another new member who plans to be on the attack guests bandwagon
Hmm, sounds like the guest who attacked me for being "new" (because I have SO much control over that) and also jumping on the so-called "attack guest" bandwagon- I don't believe there is one but if guests continually get at people then they're going to react... (not meaning to offend the nice guests!!) Isn't the purpose of this board to discuss dogs in a friendly fashion?
23. What about this classic: I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, you can't prove anything! (from a dog who thinks he's Bart Simpson)
24. Hi Bensam, it's good to see another Aussie on here :D (even though you joined before me!)
25. I don't have any expert advice to offer BUT...for all you arachnophobes: http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/spider/pholcus1.html The daddy-long-legs spider... "eats mostly other spiders. One of the spiders it eats is the much larger hairy funnel-web spider. So if you hate spiders, take a daddy-long-legs spider as a pet!" As for them being the most poisonous spiders, check out this page: http://spiders.ucr.edu/daddylonglegs.html It's really interesting and debunks a few myths too  Horsefeathers, we don't have funnelwebs in my part of Aus, it's too cold I think for them, but we get white-tails *shudder*
