  1. need I say more! your friends dogs have just proved the point I was making. It is not a trait just a bad habit brought about by silly owners  Ickle
  2. So sorry to hear about your pet. I have just remembered reading something about a dog licking up some spilt tea tree Oil it made the dog have similar symptoms to the ones you mentioned It was written by the American Collie club and relayed to the international sheltie list. Might be worth looking into if you use this substance. Ickle
  3. Thanks Horsefeathers I am glad we are ok. Keep on caring Ickle
  4. HI Horsefeathers I know what you mean about people(There's that word again) and their impulse buying of popular breeds without doing their homework, which is one reason why I pray a sheltie never goes Best in Show at Crufts. I always send interested buyers to reputable breeders and of course help all I can with relevant information on the breed. My point is that not all shelties bark incessantly but it is like any other fault that some folks get their teeth into (like GSD are dangerous) we know they are not all so but bad comments spreads like wild fire and a another breed is branded .I know there are noisey sheltie but still maintain the owners are the main cause of this problem. Hope we can still be friends despite our differing opinions and we both want the best for the dogs. Ickle
  5. There are always of finding out if your dogs barkwhen you are out such as haveing someone go by and listen outside Or leave a tape recorder recording on long play. Glad Fernanda looked deeply into the pros & cons of the sheltie as a pet; They only require grooming two or three times a week and done properly should not be any problem even when moulting. It can be alittle difficult if you suffer from arthritis but not impossible. (speaking from exprience) There you go Horsefeathers it is people again who have no patience and probably done nothing about training their pet who do these nasty things like dumping dogs.(Know what I would like to do with them but it is not for polite company such as we have on this site). We get a few little dogs like this through our rescue but somehow we always manage to find dedicated sheltie lovers who soon turn them around into well behave pets. God bless them  Most dog people are great. Ickle
  6. I am afraid I do tend take offence when shelties are branded as barkers. As I said if you train them from the start not to bark for no good reason you should not have many problems. Too many people think its funny to tease a puppy till it barks because they think it is so cute and funny to have such a little tyke telling them off but this only leads to the problems mentioned,(neighbour problems etc),It is people who make or break a breeds reputation. Sorry you have met some of the noisey ones. Ickle
  7. yellowlabsrule What a load of absolute rubbish Shelties have no more problems than any other breed and a lot less than many others I could name. I do wonder sometimes about people who pass on these bits of tittle tattle. Do they know the damage they can do to a breed. I have friends in many breeds and know they also have LOTS of problems which I would not dream of discussing because I have not owned them and will not talk about these things as I do not have the breed knowledge Fernanda please talk to the most expirenced sheltie breeders you can find and ask them about anything that worries you.I am sure they can put your mind at rest. As you know the breed in USA is quite different to the UK sheltie so I cannot speak for them since I have no nothing first hand of them apart from what I read in books but I am sure the reputable sheltie breeders in your home country can fill in all you need to know Ickle
  8. Looks a bit long in legs to be a beagle think he could maybe a Hamiltonstovare a Swedish hound ??? Ickle
  9. A sheltie should be no problem in an apartment provided the owner has a regular routine and trains the sheltie to be quiet while it is growing up especially when it is left alone. The onus like any other dog is on the owner not laugh at the puppy barking or any other naughty habit because it not so cute when the are adults, Plenty of exercise, love & training and you will have a sociabley acceptable pet. Ps they are not the only dogs that bark if not trained to be otherwise I have owned and bred them for more years than I care to remember & I run the sheltie rescue in England, Best wishes & all success should you decide to take a sheltie into your family Ickle

    Making up a CHAMPION

In the Uk a dog is made up to a champion by winning three Kennel Club Challenge Certificates at three different championship shows under three different judges and gaining at least one of the CC's after reaching the age of one year old It does not matter how many they gain before this age. They must be over 1 year old to be come a champion and have the Kennel Club's official approval of this status Ickle

  12. Hi Jasper we have not got that far up on the alphabet yet so you must just be a little patient. The breeds change when Roo ( moderator)thinks we have discussed enough about the particular breed we are on at that time and we move to the next one.  Should be due for a change soon Ickle
  13. Put politely the person who did this is an illegitimate son of a bitch I am sure you all know the most appropriate word Cannot tell you what I could do to this evil rat Ickle
  14. A medium sized gundog ,with coat of basic white flecked with black, lemon or liver. Has a long lean head with oval shaped eyes which range from hazel to dark brown in colour. Ears moderately long & low set. Long slightly arched neck, well laid shoulders, deep chest, muscular forequarters with straight well boned legs.Medium length of body.Strong hindquarters.Well padded feet & .moderate length of tail Free & elegant mover. That's as much as I know about English setters not being a gundog person Ickle
  15. I have run a small breed rescue for 25 years and can vouch for the amount of time and effort that goes in to collecting ,rehabilitating and rehoming these unfortunate dogs, I have a team which covers the UK and they are just great, nothing is to much trouble for them.We deal with unsavoury owners/breeder and liase with the general all breed rescues. (It is all good PR if you can call or be called on to help each other out.) There is the feel good factor when you see a nervous unhappy little dog change in to the most loving family pet you can possibly imagine. The other side of the coin is the heartbreak when depite all our efforts we cannot help the seriously ill or the dogs with unsound tempraments and we have to have them put to sleep. We know there are those out there who think the answer to unwanted dogs is euthanasia but when you have seen the positive results of rehoming a dog into a loving hame like me and my team you will know it is worth all the tears & tribulations. I would just like to say that although some people breed more than others this does not make all of them puppy farmers (Mills) or bad folks. If they check the homes and prospective owners properly and keep contact with the owners & give help & advice when needed what more can you ask. There are those who breed and sell dogs jndicriminately and in all factions of the dog world without considering the outcome for the dogs Think before you breed. Ickle

  18. Hi Bk-blue thanks for the insight on your grandfather's dachshunds. and for sharing your sad & amusing tales with us. Sorry about Peebo. Ickle
  19. trained originally to go down into badgers setts and chase them out. Hence the need for a long low sauage shaped body with conical head design to enable them to worm their way into the smallest of nooks & crannies. Do not know a lot about these little dogs but I must admit to having a preference for the wire-haired type when I have judged them in variety classes Ickle :D :D :D
  20. These wonderful stories brought tears to my eyes. I think you are all marvellous people and this has restored my faith in human beings Those are some very lucky dogs Bless you all Ickle
  21. Hi Roo In a article I read one 9lb cairn while out cubbing ( I presume fox cubs) bolted a fox & a huge badger and received a working certificate for this from the Master of the North Warwickshire hounds so sounds like a useful little dog. Ickle :D
  22. I assume from the way he is referred to as a hunter he was probably trained as rat & maybe a rabbit catcher Ickle
  23. My pleasure Roo enough is enough  Ickle
  24. Has guest finished? Can we really get on to cairn terrier Roo ? From my limited knowledge the cairn is a fiesty little dog full of character A double coated breed, sturdy in build and .has a mischievios expression with dark eyes, shaggy eyebrows & small upright ears.medium length of body, short nearlt upright hairy tail. A family dog who adjusts well to any life style.loves people and joins in all the fun & games I am sure more knwledgeable people will give us the standard etc. Ickle
  25. I am a recue co-ordinator in the England and we also get the (something for nothing people) asking us for free dogs/pups/ We give them a very short answer NO people of this category do not want a dog love & care and most likely will not care ito much if it runs off or dies, and like you said they would just get another from somewhere else They are also the type who could abandon one in favour of a younger dog, Ickle
