1. *rummaging through fridge* Gee, I'm fresh out of wine and McNuggets. I also have no rum or Coke (can whip you up a batch of Nyquil and Dr. Pepper if you're interested). Will you settle for some sugar free Tang and a stick of reprostituted beef jerky? Or I can put on some coffee... hubby showed me where the "on" switch is a while back. I'm sure I could do it. All I need to do is get my socks out of the pitcher (trust me... steeping socks in a coffee pitcher does nothing for their whiteness and brightness... you're better off just not wearing them out in the yard to begin with). Gotta wonder when's the last time we did any shopping. :-? Anyone else up for some of my home brew? 8)
2. I'd just like to say... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm going into the kitchen. Anyone want anything?
3.
I have PM'd him. He already lost one dog, Snow White. This is an open forum. pictures, and information, are easily stolen. I am only hoping that someoen is not trying to sell Drey out from under him. Another stolen dog. Give him a chance to respond. you all seem to be finding him guilty, without any input from him. innocent until proven guilty...
No, my position is that I'm right there with you, hoping it's just a crazy coincidence, stolen identity, or something like that. It's too surprising for me to just take it at face value.
4. Well, Fat*ssTom bought him for $700. I hope Fat*ssTom will be good to him. I just really hate online dog auctions, anyway. :( http://www.apbtauction.com/detail.asp?id=69
5. Maybe the photo was hijacked from elsewhere? It happens sometimes. :(
6. I just took a look in the avatar (siggy photo is gone, at least wouldn't show for me). I'm 100% convinced it's the same dog. I'd like to think the photo was stolen, or something. :(
7.
I need to find a good home for my Rott/Lab mix. He is a very loyal dog. We must find a home for him because he does not get along with my wifes male dog and we dont want to bring him back to the pound.
Where are you located? The sad fact is that large black dogs are notoriously hard to place. Do you have any friends or family that would take the dog? Other than that, this dog's chances of finding another home are pretty low. What's the problem? I mean, give us some details and maybe we can help. Are they both altered? What happens when they squabble? If you're interested in resolving it, there are vast resources available that might be able to help and a number of people here with a good bit of cumulative knowledge.
8. Courtnek, I see GSD's and Rotties and such every day of the week and most of them are fine. They don't make me nervous at all. There's just something about Akitas and Chows. Their body language is entirely different in that they often don't give the warnings another dog might. I'm really good at reading dog body language, but I'll be the first to admit that my weakness is mostly with these two breeds. I don't read them well at all  . Also, with me being so uncomfortable, they know it and it puts them on some sort of super alert. I'm not confident enough with them to gain their trust. Just not a good environment for either of us. These are two breeds that I'm just not interested in butting heads with, or challenging. Then again, I do believe it's because they are typically (around here) owned by people incapable of raising them right. That's what makes me so leary, I believe.
9.
Kira's reaction to your comments ----> :( LOL, I am just kidding around with you guys. HF, Kira says next time you are in Los Angeles she will be happy to attack you with love and kindness. Good luck wiht Rocco, and maybe your bank teller will have a change of heart once she sees him.
If I'm ever lost and find myself in Los Angeles again, I would LOVE to meet a nice Akita like Kira. You appear to be a very responsible owner and able to handle such responsibility. Around here, it's usually not the case. I hate to seem like I'm down on the breed as a whole. Just the ones around here owned by people as some sort of trophy.
10.
...for instance I wouldn't trust a Chow Chow as far as I could throw one or an Akita..but, I have to work hands on with them and they can be unpredictable due to the fact that their body language can be alot harder to read than other breeds :-?
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I have an inherent dread of Chows AND Akitas. I think you have to speak their language, so to speak, and I just don't. They make me uncomfortable and they know it, so I avoid them at all costs. Call it discrimination, but I outright refuse to groom Chows (though I do a select few Chow mixes) and I won't go near an Akita. Talk about an unpopular opinion (I probably should have posted this in the "unpopular opinions" thread). My feelings are based solely on my interactions and observations of these dogs in my area. I'm in a really rural area where Chows are overbred and a dime a dozen and are most often outside dogs tied to something with very little social interaction. The few Akitas I've met were owned by people who had no business with them. The only dog to ever be banned from our county was an Akita that attacked a cop. The breed wasn't banned... just this dog. I'm sure nice Chows and Akitas exist.... just not in my rural area. I'm sure that with the right owner, these dogs can be fine companions, but I've not met anyone in my area with one that was responsible enough to own it. A groomer in my area who will groom ANYTHING that walks through her door has been attacked by two different Akitas on two different occasions, once requiring hospitalization.
I also don't trust Lhasa's either.
On the other hand, I do speak Lhasa quite well and love them for their aloofness and wariness and independence, though overbreeding is indeed making them snappy and outright aggressive. I do feel a "bond" with this breed, especially owning one that no one else understood well enough to be able to handle (4 homes by 8 months of age), and owning 3 altogether. Just as with the other breeds, they aren't for everyone, for sure. They look so much like a Shih Tzu that people expect them to have that same bubbly, happy personality. They're often disappointed to learn otherwise. It's what happens when people buy dogs based on their looks (Akitas are gorgeous, no doubt, but think about some novice dog owner buying one for its looks... same with Lhasas and, heck, many of the terrier breeds). Courtnek, you can borrow my decoder ring.
11. Rocco isn't even here yet and it's already started. Every morning, I do my banking. I buzz through the drive thru with the previous day's deposits and the lady at the drive up window always ooohs and aaaahs over whichever dogs are in the car. She ALWAYS asks what's new as in do I have any new dogs coming in or going out? She's a nice lady and seems to just love the fact that I always have a carload of dogs. Sooooo when she asked me this morning about "what's new," I mentioned that I'm going to pick up a dog on Saturday. She got all excited and said, "oh! another Poodle??" (since that's what I usually deal with) and I told her, "no, a Doberman." Her mouth dropped open, her eyes widened and I swear she lost her breath as she stammered, "Oh, I HATE those dogs! They're so mean!! I've never met one that wasn't just vicious!" What's funny about that is there aren't that many Dobermans around here at all, so I don't know where she's meeting all these vicious killer dogs. So Bully lovers, listen up. I can now join you in the ranks of a "bad dog" owner. I just need to learn the secret handshake and where to pay my membership dues and I'll need my secret decoder ring. *snicker*
12. I don't remember which of you posted this last year, but you posted a link about the use of melatonin and peppermint extract for noise sensitive dogs (think storms). Well, here's an update you'll be proud of! It's getting about that time of year again where we have the ritualistic afternoon thunderboomers. One of our dogs is holy moly afraid. He actually loses control of his bowels and bladder and will drool and pace (and pee and poop :-? ) when a storm comes up. We gave him acepromazine a time or two, but I really didn't like the idea of having him drunk for the entire day/evening just to get through a one hour storm. My husband was really, REALLY upset with me for giving Fred something so "strong" (Fred is just one of those dogs who doesn't handle ace so well... well, now I know  ). We had already tried Rescue Remedy with no results at all. You posted about the melatonin and peppermint and we've been using it since. It works! My poor Fred is a much calmer dog during storms, without being sedated. We are so happy. We've also been giving it to my Tucker Lab because he's quite nervous during storms, too, but just not to the extent as Fred. Both of them are much happier dogs and are much calmer. I love that they aren't dopey or sedated. Anyway, I just wanted to post that little update and thank whoever  it was that posted it last year. It's just the trick!
13.
I would just hope that when the time comes, Pauly is the one to go first.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way  . We say that all the time around here, as bad as it sounds. :-? I don't think we'll be trying any medications. I'm not adamantly opposed to medicating a dog that needs it. We did have a dog on Clomicalm at one time, but I didn't think it was all it was cracked up to be, at least not for her. I reckon as long as I'm able to keep Perry & Pauly together, it's a safe, "natural" alternative. Pauly is perfectly serene as long as Perry is nearby. :)
14. Isn't Pantene's parent company Proctor & Gamble? I think I read that somewhere because I REALLY liked Pantene (curly) for Poodle coats!
15. I'll see if I can make this make sense. Perry and Pauly (the Standard Poodles) are velcro dogs... with each other. Since the beginning, they've both been allowed to go with me to work each day and they usually go with me when I'm running errands. They are both "my" dogs and stay right with me. They are believed to be littermates, but were separated for a year when they went into rescue and I adopted Perry and someone else had Pauly for that year before I got him. Still, I don't know how dogs recognize other dogs, or what their memory is like, but they seemed to recognize each other immediately and it's like they've made a pact to remain inseparable. The problem... Perry is actually pretty stable. He adores Pauly and acts like the big brother. He'll leave his beloved bed to let Pauly have it, give up toys and such, and Pauly is the ONLY dog he'll do that stuff for. However, Perry doesn't get all freaked out if Pauly is out of sight. He's quite content to know that Pauly is off in another room, or outside. Pauly, on the other hand.... ack! Pauly will NOT be away from Perry, no way, no how. I took Pauly with me to work one day and left Perry home. Perry was ok with it. Pauly spent the day at work pacing in his kennel and throwing himself against the gate and whining and howling. When they are together, they just sleep all day. The same thing happens at home. If Perry were to go outside without Pauly, Pauly will throw himself at the door or window. ONE TIME I took Perry with me to town for about an hour to give Pauly some time alone at home. Bad idea :-? . Pauly is also extremely possessive of Perry. What do I do? Just say screw it and keep them together? If something ever happened to Perry, I don't know what I'd do with Pauly. He seems really distressed without Perry. We tried from day one not to let them become dependent on each other, but Pauly didn't buy it. I mean, they are not just close friends. I think Pauly does suffer from extreme separation anxiety if Perry isn't nearby. Suggestions? Is it worth worrying about?
16. While we're at it, I need some black fishnet stockings. Ok, well, if you could see me, you'd think it was funny. :o
17.
Congrats! :D Where in Virginia?
I have no idea.
BTW - there's a great Doberman discussion forum that you might be interested in: http://www.network54.com/Forum/11341
Thanks! :) Things are moving right along. I have a copy of the contract in hand and it looks like we are going to meet up next weekend for me to get Rocco. I reckon I need to put a battery in my digi cam (as soon as I find it  ). I should have done that a long time ago, anyway. I have absolutely NO pictures of Fifty, either. Egads, I REALLY need my camera powered up! :o You guys will likely get bombed with pictures of Rocco AND Fifty (who is doing great, btw) at the same time.
18.
When does he arrive?
I don't know yet for sure. I'm sure it'll be another week or so. I have to send some paperwork back by snail mail, so that'll take a few days right there. Also, the lady has to make arrangements to get Rocco back down this way. He's actually in Virginia right now (several states away). She's going to make arrangements to get him closer to us and then I'll meet up with her a few hours from my house. It's all going to have to be arranged, but I don't see it happening before next weekend.
19. No. There is no licensing requirement where I live and really no governing body to license a dog with. For the most part, when a rabies tag is issued to a dog, it has a registration number of sorts. That's about as registered as they get.
20. My husband and I both are just as excited as we can be. The Gang, of course, is indifferent. It's funny how quickly things can change. We have been planning all year to build a deck this summer. We've already modified the plans to include a wheelchair accessible ramp.
21. ...from the lady involved with Rocco (the paralyzed Doberman). We've been approved to adopt!
22. Great! Thanks for letting me know it (finally  ) got there! :)
23. Are you getting your pm's?
24. 5 cats... Butthead, Snowball (solid black... hubby's idea of a joke :-? ), Half Pint, Li'l Bit, and TomCat 1 blind old dilapidated ferret, age 10 years, named Layla (her buddy recently died) 2 goldfish 1 bunny named (ta da) Bunny
25. Well, I'm in much better spirits today. Doc redeemed himself early this morning. He was all but waiting for me to arrive so he could apologize. He told me that he thought about it after I'd left and that he didn't mean things the way they came out. He said he was sure I was capable of doing it and knew I'd do a good job, but he was worried that I have so much going on... so many other dogs (really... caring for nine dogs is NOT as difficult as it would seem). He said he was just thinking that perhaps I wasn't fully aware of how much work it would be to take care of this dog. He said it is still a concern, but he didn't want me to believe that he thinks I'm incapable, or impetuous. You don't know how much better it made me feel to hear him apologize and say that. He said he was only expressing his concerns and giving me food for thought, but he just didn't mean it the way it came out. The thing is he really is a very well intentioned person (even though just yesterday I thought he was the biggest butthole on earth) despite royally p*ssing me off from time to time. He's just very similar to many men I know (and I don't mean this in an insulting manner)... he just spits things out first and thinks later about how it came out. Then he wonders that the big deal is ("you're upset because...?"). Anyway, he doesn't think I'm a hoarder and apologized all over himself for presenting it that way. I just accepted his apology and input at that point and left it at that. No need to carry it any further, but boy howdy, do I feel better. I was genuinely offended and hurt that he could have said that to me.
