Are your dogs jealous of the computer?
Horsefeathers! replied to JackieMaya's topic in Everything about dogs
Not mine. They are opportunists and see a lap for what it's worth in ANY situation, even the big dogs. -
:x :x :x Soooooooo we've lived in the same place with the same furniture now for eight years. With all the dogs we've had and fostered, our house is still in surprisingly good shape. No carpet damage (of course, no telling what the UNDERSIDE is going to look like when we rip it out), no holes in the walls, no scratched up baseboards, and the furniture, until today, has remained intact. No holes, no tears, not even much sign of wear. I've been proud of how well we've managed to maintain this place and still have it be dog friendly. Some of you remember that Peaches (the three legged foster Dobe that is apparently planning on a permanent occupancy here) stayed with a close friend of mine for a while until my ankle (which had been broken) could heal a bit better. Kind of a co-foster. If you remember that, then you'll remember that Peaches picked up some really bad habits at my friend's house. One of which was becoming a three legged wrecking crew. Well, she's done great here since she's been back. No more episodes of the dog aggression she had begun displaying there and she has never destroyed anything in my house. She is one of the few dogs I don't leave kenneled during the day and she has never bothered anything. Well, recently, she ripped some holes in my papasan chair. It was nothing that I couldn't repair and I did... twice. It's like she just bit holes in it, like biting an apple. Anyway, the papasan chairs are pretty much glorified dog beds, so no big deal. Today, she tore up my tv watching lazy chair :o . Our favorite chair that has been here all this time and where all the critters like to pile into our (whoever's sitting there) laps and squish down into. She didn't totally demolish it, but I can see where this is heading. I got old rusty out of storage today. It's our super de duper big crate. I hope this dog is ok being crated because, after today, she doesn't have a choice. She's gonna have some boot camp coming to her. What's funny is that my husband and I have recently been discussing new furniture. Ours is still in great shape, but I'm thinking ahead to the next thing. My friend who, ironically enough, is the one who kept Peaches for me was looking at $2000 leather sofas yesterday in town. She also has Fifty (if any of you remember him... another former foster of mine and for sure a one dog wrecking crew) and I cannot imagine it. My husband and I were saying that we will probably get a couple of cheap futons and embellish them with nice coverings and some pillows. Peaches has reaffirmed my decision to buy CHEAP furniture in the future. I was feeling pretty lucky that our nice stuff lasted so long, but now I don't think I want the stress of having to worry about nice furniture when I know I'm always going to have dogs... and probably knuckleheads at that. :x

I can't see the pics because of my screwed up monitor, but I like the idea and the price sounds reasonable for what I'm envisioning.

Hey, congratulations! I can't make out the pictures, but I'm sure he's absolutely adorable. 8) -
Happy Birthday to y'all. You're big kids now! :bday:

Ok, I'll admit it... I think French Bulldogs are freakin' adorable.

I pulled my husband out of his chair from eating dinner to show him this :o . I always, always, always unplug the shredder when not in use and he usually does, but he thinks I'm a crackpot for worrying about it. I never thought about a dog trying to lick it as much as I worry about a c@t tail or long fluffy ear getting caught in it. My c@ts like to sit on it. :-? Thank you for posting this!

Frontline Plus... is it me, or does it just suck?
Horsefeathers! replied to Horsefeathers!'s topic in Fur coat care
In their system, DivOb? I thought it stayed on the surface of their skin like Advantage. :-? I guess I'm one of those folks who is easily confused with details. Frontline Plus... is it me, or does it just suck?
Horsefeathers! replied to Horsefeathers!'s topic in Fur coat care
Really, DAL?? I'm going to ask the rep about that. See, my vet hasn't carried Frontline in forever (well, I know he's never carried it since I've been there and I've been there six years) and he's only recently starting to stock it. I know Advantage kills on contact. It doesn't matter if the flea bites, once it hits that skin, it's a goner. Maybe that's why I'm finding live fleas on Peanut... they just haven't bitten her yet. Well, I don't think I like that, either. :o -
If you did indeed pay for it, get in touch with whatever powers that be and complain. From what I understand, these corporate stores are usually pretty good for refunding money. I think I'd be snapping some photos if I were you. Sounds like incompetence to me, pure and simple. Even if the dog were matted to the bone, I don't believe they should ever have shaved it down without consent. They could refuse to groom it at all and send it home matted (hypothetically) if need be, but I absolutely do not believe in buzzing down a coated dog without owner consent. I think it would be an easier pill to swallow had they said something like, "oops, boy, did I goof...!" rather than try to insult your intelligence. :x Fortunately, it is hair and it will grow, but it still would make me angry to be virtually insulted in the face of someone else's incompetence. Demand a refund. :o
Courtnek, you read too fast. I already posted. :P

Positive thoughts for Bongo please

Oh my, I'm so sorry to hear that. Enjoy your time with him and spoil him rotten. I don't know what's worse... knowing it's coming and trying to prepare for it, or having it come unexpectedly. I'm so sad for you. :( -
I'll wait a few days. Only one c@t got the Adams flea spray, but that was before I found out I could dose out the Advantage. I'll give it a few days. Thanks!

Frontline Plus... is it me, or does it just suck?
Horsefeathers! replied to Horsefeathers!'s topic in Fur coat care
I forgot the BIGGEST reason I'm a fan of Advantage... our rep is always so generous with the samples. I always get several boxes of large dog (55+ lb) Advantages which works out well for me with so many dogs. The Frontline fellow only gave me one three pack one time. I mean, I'm not complaining, but hey, gotta go where the goodies are, right? *snicker* -

Ooooooohhhhh, now see, I didn't even remember that. I do know for a fact that Advantix left chemical burns on two of my own dogs. They immediately had reactions at the application sites and as it dispersed into a long line down their backs, they looked like they had red racing stripes and my dogs were freaking out, chewing at their skin (instead of applying in one spot, I apply it in smaller spots down the spine). I had to wash it off! I guess it's the tick medicine in the Advantix because I've never had a problem with the regular Advantage. The other thing about the Advantix I didn't like was the dispersion... it just left a greasy stripe on the dogs it DIDN'T break out and didn't seem to disperse well. The only thing I don't like about the Advantage is that I think it stinks to high heaven. It makes a nice clean dog smell right like a wet dog to me. Works like a charm in this house, though. I don't know why the Frontline isn't working. I'd love to be able to use it because the thing I DO like it is that it isn't as greasy and it didn't stink. :niewiem: Oh well, I can take stinky dogs over flea dogs any day. :kciuki: Now I still have to figure out how long I have to wait to apply the Advantage to Peanut. She's a pretty small dog, so I'd hate to overload her on stuff. -

I doubt I'll be getting a refund since it was a free sample box. I don't remember complaining about Frontline before. This is only the second time I've used it... once last month and once this month. I've heard of clients complaining, but had no firsthand experience with it. I know I complained about the Advantix. Maybe I'm just getting old and senile. :P Maybe we truly do have some bionic fleas here. It doesn't help that the climate here is pretty mild. Until the last couple of days, our temps have been in the mid 70's almost every day. We only get cold weather in short spells and then it's not THAT cold (lows tonight in upper 20's... people here will think they're freezing to death). -
Happy Birthday, Beautiful Big Boy Cody! :bday:

I typically use Advantage on my dogs and only as needed which is not often... maybe 3-4 times a year. I've never used Frontline before because my vet didn't carry it and I had no need to seek it out otherwise. I recently got some free samples of Frontline Plus for small dogs and used it on my 8 lb Poodlet. She will get fleas when no one else does (except Devin, but he's the exception to every rule, so we don't use him as a guage for "normal"), so I check her every night diligently. The first time I used the Frontline Plus, I saw live fleas on Peanut within days. I thought maybe they hadn't reached the skin yet (where the Frontline is) and that was the problem? Wasn't sure, but I tried it again a month later. It's only been two weeks since I applied that last Frontline to Peanut and I'm seeing live fleas on her! I never have this problem with Advantage. Right now we're battling fleas in my house because apparently Peaches brought some with her when we got her back. We've not been seeing fleas on any of the other dogs, but the cats were loaded with them and they never, ever go outside. That means fleas were brought into the house somehow and it had to be when Peaches came back from my friend's. We even keep our yards treated. The other dogs don't have them (they get the Advantage), but Peanut is becoming a walking fleabag and she just had Frontline two weeks ago. Here's a question... how soon after the Frontline can I put Advantage on Peanut? If I remember reading the box right (I've thrown it out), it said not to apply anything for 30 days after the Frontline application. Do I have to wait another two weeks to apply Advantage to Peanut? I suppose I can give her Capstar for the next two weeks, but I REALLY want to get some Advantage on her. Frontline Plus sucks! :x Or maybe we just have bionic fleas. :-?

Oh, Izzy, I'm so very sorry! Rest in peace, sweet Tabatha.
Okay.....so here's their schedule. Let me know how I should change it. They eat at 8:00 am when my husband leaves for work. He leaves around 8:30 or so but feeds them before. When I get home from work (at roughly 4:45) I feed everyone shortly after. Usually around 5:00 or 5:30. After every gets in from outside and wiped and settled.
We used to feed on almost exactly the same schedule as you mentioned above, but some of our dogs were waking up and bile puking early in the mornings. We now feed as closely to a 12 hour schedule as possible and they also get snacks. Typically, 8 am and 8 pm feedings and afternoon snacks. It stopped the morning gurglings and bile pukings. It seems my dogs can go 12 hours without eating, but let it be 12 1/2 hours and they're hacking all over the place. :-?

Oh, one other question... is it a bad idea to go ahead and put Advantage on a c@t that was sprayed with Adam's flea spray earlier the same day, or best to wait?
-
Thanks so much, TDG. You're a life saver! :D

I know that you can break down large tubes of Advantage into smaller doses for smaller dogs. Does anybody know if I can break down large dog Advantage into c@t doses? I know you can't use Advantix on c@ts, but are the dog and c@t Advantages the same, only labeled differently? I could swear a rep once told me that you could do that (break down a large dog tube of Advantage for c@ts), but I'm not positive since I've also heard that you never use dog flea meds on c@ts. Can anybody shed some light for me please? If you CAN do it, what's the dosage? I generally break them down into one ml per 15 lbs of dog when I do it for dogs. Would it be the same for c@ts (assuming you can do it at all)? I notice you still can't post the c*a*t word without errors.

How long has it been? You can give some hydrogen peroxide and they will expel whatever is in their tummies (including breakfast). Just from the things you mentioned, I don't think there's much to worry about, but if you're in doubt (like perhaps thinking they got into something you might not be aware of), I'd personally try to make them upchuck it. With my own dogs, I tend to take a better safe than sorry approach and have given them probably about as much peroxide in their lives as they've ever had treats. For just gum and some chapstick, I probably wouldn't sweat it if I were absolutely positive that's all they got.
