I didn't think it would be the case for whippets, I've heard they are extremely clean dogs, yes I know, clean and smelly ARE two different things, but most people with a smelly dog wouldn't go around telling people it was clean! I would beleive Pharoah Hounds are sight hounds. They were my next choice after a whippet. Beautiful dogs

Of course mouse, I've lost the usb for my digi... I was going to bring my camera up here with me seeing as dads computer actually works (the one at home wont upload the software so my camera is currently useless! :( ) but dad went and bought some film for his camera yesterday so I'm sure he'll scan the photos and email them to me when he gets it back :D Well yesterday after I posted we went for a walk to the shops. We found this little poultery place and I went in to get Monties dinner while dad waited outside with Montie in his arms. The guy in the shop asked if I needed help, I told him I was looking for some food for my dog. He said "Is that your dog out there? I know just the thing for him" and grabbed a bag of chicken necks and gave them to me for nothing! Thats what you get for having a cute dog  We have been going for lots of walks. I've yet to find an off leash dog beach, so as yet he has remained on lead. He's loving it though. I took him for a walk this morning at 7 o'clock and we got to the beach and he started zooming around in circles, kicking up the sand, it was so funny! Then we were walking over the rocks and he was jumping in all the puddles, then he jumped in a deed one that he could only just touch the ground, he got the funniest look on his face and just waded out and looked like a drowned rat! I got his birthday present yesterday, a $30 hair dryer. Its pretty snazzy, its a breville, I got a breville because I trust the brand. Its his birthday tomorrow so I'm going to buy a cake today maybe. We'll find a dog beach for his birthday and maybe have a little picnick at the beach. I'm sure he'll love it

There is one thing that is missing from that list.... a digital camera, so you can post lots of pics.... she sounds adorable!!! -
Court, what about Whippets? Do they get the "hound" smell? :o
Got me craving for something too but its not cake!    Sry I just had to say that! 8)
:o :o :o :o  Good call  Hillside, how do the rest of the world spell dalmation? Like I said, I too only saw the dogs

LOL, seen that one before... think I must be getting old too, I only see the dogs!

I think frontline needs to be applied every 2 weeks for ticks - we've just come into a tick area and so I frontlined Montie the other day so he'd be safe for his holiday :D I think you can buy something called Malaban or Malawash (depends where you live) to spray the yard with, I hear this is supposed to be pretty good 8)

For those who don't know, its Monties birthday on Monday so I've arranged for him to come to the coast to visit dad for the week of his birthday. Well we're here now, after the long 7 hour drive. We got here last night and when Montie first saw dad I think it took him a second to realise who he was since he hasn't seen him for so long, after that it was all dances and tail wags :D We took Montie for a walk along the beach, which is only a block away. Monties never seen the beach before, so he ran around in the sand, tail wagging... he seems to like it 8) Its the next day, I took Montie for another early morning walk along the beach, he's a bit more out going today and wanted to pee on everything! I was a bit worried last night because he wasn't peeing... I was worried he'd get back and do it in the house  We are on the top story of a really nice lot of flats, he's lying on the chair now with his "Lambie", sunbaking. We're going to take him to an off leash beach later, so he can really have a good run around in the sand. I think I'll buy him a hair dryer for his birthday, as if a trip to the coast isn't enough  His other one is getting a little old and needs replacing  I'll keep you all up to date on how Monties birthday holiday is going :bday:
-
I kinda wish now I hadn't asked... :o Horrible stuff, I would have preferred not to know  Montie would be deemed "child aggressive" by her, he will make an effort to tear any thing stuffed apart - although usually unsuccessful its the though that counts, right?

I'll join in the tipple with ya'll :drinking:  Umm... *tipples a little more*... don't want to stir things up *tipples again*... but who is SS??? :drinking: :drinking: :drinking:

Well actually I'm sorry if it came across that I was implying that humans and dogs are the same, we all know thats not the case. To be honest, I've no idea how common it is in dogs, but my main point was to be aware that it does happen and that the consiquences can be pretty bad. Taurus and Jada, good point - $40 isn't much in the scheme of things and I'd rather be $40 out of pocket than to lose the life of my dog.

Although not a dog, my mum got a black spot on her tongue once... if she didn't see the doctor when she did she could have died. It was the 17th ever reported case of tongue melanoma in humans - pretty scary stuff eh? :o So although its not common, it is something to be aware of. If it is growing definatly go to the vet asap, on the other hand if you've just never noticed it before maybe its just always been there?

Heartworm: Disease, Treatment and Prevention
Aroura replied to sscully's topic in Veterinary information
I live in an area with no heart worm, I've been told before, I can't remember who by, that if you give a dog heart worm tablets I think 3 days before visiting a heart worm area they will be protected. Is this right? I'm not sure of the exact information I was given. I'm taking Montie to the coast for his birthday and don't want him to pick up heartworm! :o -
Monties going to LOVE his birthday present!!!
Aroura replied to Aroura's topic in Everything about dogs
Oh, and did I mention the $600 dog I'm buying partially so he can have another friend? I do everything for that dog!!! He's worth every cent though  I also go out of my way to make sure he gets his 3 or 4 massages (or as he knows them "Massagie-sagie?" ) plus a 6-7km walk and all his BARF food, yes he is quite the spoilt one... and now I'm even going to do uni externally and move to a place out of town just so I can spend more time with HIM and he can run around to his hearts content! -
Its Monties first birthday since I got him on the 19th, he's turning two  When asking myself what Montie would love more than anything in the world for his birthday I knew it would be to have a visit from dad, who moved to the sunshine coast a couple of months ago (and has just got a job in Figi and will be moving there soon! :o ). Well I knew it would be a bit much to ask dad to come down here to visit, so I'm going one better, we're going up there! So not only does Montie get to see dad for his birthday, but he gets to go on a holiday for a week and see the coast for the first time! Of course we'll be having a party for him too and buying him lots of presents, oh and after we get back we're going on a day trip to coffs so he can go to the beach again, only this time we're camping and having a bbq and having it with all of his doggie friends :D I wish my parents gave me presents like I'm giving my dog...

"Intellegence Tests" carried out for dogs including tests of trainability and ability to figure things out show working dogs such as border collies, blue cattle dogs and kelpies, as well as German Shepherds, Toy Poodles, and, of course, the lovable yet clever, Papillon all to be in the top ten "smartest" breeds. However, I do agree that there are different sorts of intellegence, I consider Basenjis to be one of the smartest breeds, however they'd rate pretty low on that sort of test because, like any wild dog, they are practically untrainable. As for opening doors, Lily was the queen, if she saw someone open a door just three times she would then open it, if it was locked she'd unlock it first, what ever sort of door it was if it was possible she'd open it. I had to padlock the gate after she kept unlocking it (one of those hard to unlock ones too) and getting out. She thought she was a little person

Dad is stunning! We had this Bullmastiff pup in our intro course when Cassie was going through. Her name is Miss B, she is the cutest thing, such a sweet heart, she won everyone over. From begining to end she over tripled in size, every week we saw her she was bigger! Anyway, there is a Mastiff napper in town at the moment, a few have gone missing, on comp day at training I got there early and everyone was talking about Miss B, she'd dissapeared and we were all worried what had happend to her. Everyone had the biggest sigh of relief when she arrived, bounding out of her car.

Sorry, must have missed all the fuss... fixed it now though :D Is that better?

Everything in life has its risks, I find the risks of feeding kibble out wiegh the risks of feeding raw, my dogs do well on it and thats why I'm sticking to it. Bacteria can get into dog food too, without knowing it you can accidently kill all your dogs at once while feeding what you think is right. As I said, everything comes with its risks and you have to do what you feel safest with.

I've got it on tape, I think its a classic, so funny!!! It scares me a little though, looking at the Weims owners, that reminds me so much of me with Montie, except I don't let him get away with attacking other people! I do however, find myself cradling him singing "rockabye Montie..." and spending hours searching the house for his "lambie" every time he loses it

Thanks for that Shara!!! I still can't get photos, but I've done the other thing you said, and made the pages bigger so I can fit more in!!!

Bringing home a new puppy.....( or dog)
Aroura replied to Queen Bitch's topic in Everything about dogs
OMG people go out in the show ring looking like that! :o :o :o Unbelievable, I can see why you decided against that! No offence to anyone who dresses like that here  Ok, I'll send you off the puppy schedule, and you can let me know what you think :D If you like it you can always print it out and use it for your own pup! Even if you make a few personal touch ups first  Liver Dals are gorgeous, can't wait till you get him or her and get photos up!!! Ohhh little dally pups! -
Thanks Court

Bringing home a new puppy.....( or dog)
Aroura replied to Queen Bitch's topic in Everything about dogs
Sorry if I came across a little strong  I just think you should cross them off the list, if the situation arises you can consider it then but I don't see any reason why a dog trained from puppy hood would ever become so out of control that you would need a prong collar - if that did happen maybe you could consider a gentle leader instead? Now, racking my brain I can't think of any breed that you've mentioned... BUT judging by the avator I'd say you're looking at getting a Dal? Beautiful dogs, I can never pass one in the street without stopping and staring, even drooling a little at times   They have handler clothing sites??? Would you be able to post a link for me? Makes me wonder, what will they think of next? Glad to hear you've looked into training - you can write out all the lists in the world and buy your dog every product and accessorie under the sun but it wont make a scrap of difference if your pup isn't well socialised and trained right from the start. I've written out a list for when I get my puppy, I've already got things like food bowels, toys and collars/leads etc for him so I'm not rushing around buying it at the last minute, but most of my list focuses on training and socialisation, show prep and meal plans. I've posted it before but I could email the document to you if you like? Just give me your email address and I'll send it off ASAP. I've also got a checklist of things to introduce the puppy to each week as many times as possible so he gets used to it. The good thing about brining a pup home at winter is they get to meet people with jackets, big bags, hats etc, things that otherwise a dog may grow to be scared of. Lilys aggression began not only with children, but also towards the unfamiliar, such as people in jackets, which she wasn't exposed to as a pup because she came home in the middle of summer. You have to be aware of these things, even if you bring your pup home in summer maybe try to have some dress up partys of something and encourage people to wear big, over the top clothes, and of course, carry lots of treats so everyone can give the pup yum yums! :D
