Anderson said it was quite common for domestic dogs to attack and kill an injured or screaming animal. "For instance, a terrified dog gets caught in a gate, and the others attack and kill it. Many dog owners have had that kind of awful experience." She said it was difficult to explain scientifically the psychology behind this kind of instinctive behaviour. "But it is possible that in nature the injured dog was a liability and made the rest of the pack feel vulnerable."
Actually, it's not difficult to explain scientifically, and her "guess" is dead-on. Think for a minute, of the life of a pack...EVERY animal has to contribute, either to move the prey along, attack it, kill it, or to care for the alpha female, nurse her pups if she cant, guard the alpha. other high ranking females in a pack will develop milk if for some reason the alpha cannot nurse. It's a complete "society", with rules that all have to obey, to keep the pack functioning and ALIVE day to day....this is survival, in a harsh and dangerous environment, and everyone has to pull their weight. This is not a nice snooze in front of the fire, they have to dig holes to crawl into to stay warm. they even dig up tubers and vegetables to eat when the game gets low in the winter. So, if every member is necessary to the pack, and they live in this family society, it seems to me perfectly logical that they would destroy a member who cannot, for whatever reason, contribute. They dont have access to hospitals, a pack member hurting and in pain will slow the rest of the pack down, and they cant do anything about it. They also seem to know, when the situation can be remedied or it's hopeless, and in the case of "hopeless" they will kill the afflicted pack member, This both puts it out of its misery and pain, and allows the pack to move on. In the case of saveable, it usually becomes the responsiblility of the non-nursing, lower member females to tend to an injured pack member that can survive. They dont kill every injured pack member, only the ones that they somehow sense cannot be saved by them. It really is euthanasia, on their terms. They have been known to swiftly and silently kill members of their pack that have been shot caught in bear traps, or are too sickly for whatever reason to go on. This instinct has stayed with them, and in some dogs it's more pronounced than in others. But alot of the bite and attack incidents you hear of are because of this. People yelling and waving their arms reactivates the instinct, even in the most domesticated of dogs....
it was odd because she has never reacted quite that ferociously to anyone before...
it's the ones you WOULDNT suspect that end up being the problems.... John Wayne Gacy was a serial killer of young boys...He was also a clown, owned a construcition company and was a troop leader for the Boy Scouts. Everyone loved him and trusted their kids with him. Until he killed like 30 children, mostly pre-pubescent and adolescent boys, and buried them in the basement and under his driveway.... Dogs somehow seem to KNOW....they can see through the charades that people fall for...they seem able to get past the smiling, pleasant face and get to the real gist of the person....by instinct, or scent, or maybe some sense we'll never understand, but they know.... I too will never live without a dog. Both for their love and companionship, and because they are the best protection you can have.

OMG!! AM I JUMPING THE GUN>??? She is so differnt tonight!! she is trying to chew up my boots (have I created a monster???) and jumping up and down, running to and from the door..not likehe was ANYTHING before...she was more open when I came home, so now I need to see how she isth Kyle...but she has NEVER been this animated, or this "forward"...(never tried to chew my shoes, that;'s for sure!!!) I hope this really works!! maybe I'm just being too optimistic...I hope NOT...

It's REALLY good.. take boneless breast of chicken and bake it at 350..in the meantime take frozen broccoli and put it out to thaw...mix a can Cream of Brocoli, cream of chicken and cream of celery soup with milk..so that the mixture is lighter than what you wou;d have with a creamed soup....kinda runny... mix it all up with Allspice and Ginger, a few shakes from each. (like three/four shakes) and when the chicken is bake 3/4 through, put the brocolli on top and pour the soup mixture over it. Cover it an let it bake for 40 minutes. In the meatime, make white rice...Uncle Ben's is great. Serve the whole thing over the rice...it makes great leftovers too!!

unfortunately, with the bully breeds, thay have anmal aggression issues. They NEED TO BE LEASHED.. what was she thinking?? She should consider herself lucky the horse didnt lash out and kick the dogs head in...which they are completely capable of doing..and have done on a number of occasions., even against non-aggresive dogs... STUPID OWNER ALERT!!!

thanks Malamum...he's a teenage boy, hormones, peer pressure..I was surprised and pleased that he defended me. he doesnt really "care' about Laurel, altho he is working with me to get her over her fear, at my request.. I think he wants her to like him, altho he would never admit that... the fact that he chastised his friend surprised me. He's really a good kid, dealing with normal teenage stuff for a boy...they dont normally break the "boy" rules, but he did. I was impressed. And I thanked him for standing by me....and he said "they are NOT allowed to mess with you.. you're my mom...and he WILL not get Chicken Brocolli Bake...he will learn something from THAT..dont give him any, no matter HOW MUCH he begs..." I must be a pretty good cook, huh?

I startedher on the rescue remedy tonight..she was at the door when I came home, but Kyle wasnt here at the time. The real test will be to see how she reacts to having him around...she gets a little better every day (she has never been at the door before when I got home, whether he was here or not) so maybe this will help speed things up a little... I'll let you know...

GO FOR IT SHAR!!! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! besides the fact that he is jsut ADORABLE!!! and I LOVE his name!! your heart is telling you that you want another pupster...and I firmly believe in following the heart....my only warning would be to make sure that this is what Becky wants too. You have to consider her needs as well, but if she is all about doing it, than go for it!!

SOMEONE IS IN ***BIG** TROUBLE...... I called the police this morning and gave them the cell number, explained what happened and what Maura and Judy had told, and they said they would look into it and get back to me...... Turns out it WAS one of Kyle's friends...it's his cell number. I confronted him with that, asking him how he came across the name "Scott Smith".... Apparently, the Foxhound Rescue had called all the adoptee's (via a secretary that works for them) and warned them about Scott Smith. This kid got the message off the answering machine (overheard it while Kyle was playing the messages, and he is notoriously bad about forgetting to tell me about them) and thought it would be a "great joke"....I was SOOO infuriated!!! But what really surprised me is that Kyle shoved him (his own friend, who he usually defends from adult anger) into the wall and said "You ever pull another stunt like that on my mom, and YOU WILL REGRET IT!" He knows how I feel about Laurel, and although she still hasnt quite taken to him, he tries to make friends with her and help me. I feel SOOOOO much better!!! I was really worried....I told the kid he's not welcome in my house for the next two weeks, and so NO CHICKEN BROCCOLLI BAKE FOR YOU!! (I make it every Sunday for all of his friends, they love it, he's going to miss two weeks of it now). He was crestfallen....

thanks everybody...and Rosebud? I agree.....I wouldnt part with her, problems and all. I know how much she loves me...
A Ridgeback will steal all of your heart and most of your bed
So will a foxhound, I've been finding out....

re-reading that I realize that cant be right either. How would one of his friends know a name that the hound people recognize? I am really kind of concerned now. No more outside alone for her, even if Freebee's with her (and she always is)
I've probably missed something, but how does this guy even know about Laurel and where would he have got your phone number from?
I asked the same questions...both of them. I wonder if this is the same guy, or someone in cahoots with him, who tried to nab her before.... Possibly Maura and Judy know about him because they are in hound rescue...how he got my number is REALLY interesting, because it's unlisted. He may scope out places like this, and read forums; I had posted to quite a few at first looking all over for direction on how to handle her fears... But the phone number bothers me....All I can think of would be a vet maybe? Mine, or the one who vacinnates the Hounds? I called the vet and they dont have anyone working there named Scott Smith, not surprisingly....but since I dont know what he looks like I couldnt describe him. This is very disturbing. That's twice now....the only other thing I can think of is that it's one of my son's friends thinking he's being funny...the caller id showed only "cellular call" when the call came in, and most of them have cell phones....

I too sorrow for your loss, and I thank you esepcially for the information, since my girl is part lab.....

Someone just called me and said that "Laurel was not an adoptable dog because of her fears...we will take her off your hands and find her a home where people can raise a fearful dog.....you dont need this grief...." He gave me a name of Scott Smith (FIRST warning sign...) and a number that when I called it, the people said "NO Scott Smith here, wrong number...." I called Maura and Judy, the rescue society people...they believe this "Scott Smith" is looking for dogs with issues, like Laurel, where people dont want to deal with it. They said they have heard his name before, and believe he is "gathering" dogs and selling them to research labs..they cant prove it. because he is slick and cant be found....PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU CHECK EVERYONE OUT WHO WANTS TO ADOPT YOUR DOG!!! I AM SOOOOO PISSED!! I would SERIOUSLY like to meet this man in a dark alley.....WITH my dogs.....

VERY GOOD TO HEAR!! I have a friend who gave their golden to his brother, who lives on a farm, because he couldnt exercise it properly and didnt want her to suffer. she is now living the "good life" - running on the farm, playing with the kids....having a great time. When Jim visits there, she still comes up and licks his face, she remembers him as her once owner...but when Jims brother calls her, she comes to him and lays at his feet. She is very happy, and it looks like this dog is too!! I wish I could have a farm.... or a really nice tract of land with forests and prairies....I would be happy there.
Oh and a couple of days after the fire - I was hugging Gusto from behind and he was still on alert. Gusto heard something and jumped up and his big head hit me in the eye. I had a black eye. Difficult to expain in this small town.lol.
GOOD FOR GUSTO!! Man, they are just amazing...the link between us and them was meant to be, I am convinced of that.... and your black eye...I sympathise...Laurel walks on me when she wants me to get up - jumps up on the bed and trots all over me. She left bruises on my wrist that looked like someone had manhandled me, and I had a really hard time trying to explain that MY DOG DID IT....
-
what was all that??? yea, the AKC site is a good one, because they only promote good breeders with dogs that can be certified for health issues and have proven themselves to be good breeders. Definitely take your current BC with you to meet the puppy... Welcome to DOGO, and also, welcome to America!!! I hope you really like it here...we have our issues, but for the most part, we're pretty decent people..... both in America, and on DOGO!! Can you teach me how to make Glug???
Quote: She did not seem that concerned about the bite. That's worrisome. Did she even apologize?
that was my question also....seems a little unconcerned about what her dog does....
-
y'know the sad part? While she was doing all the "whining, growling, stand up lay down stand up lay down" I actually yelled at her to lay down, thinking, "cant you just SLEEP like a normal dog????" She was actually WALKING on me, which caused some bruising...pain makes me cranky, and I yelled at her.... :agrue: :agrue: :agrue: Thank God she ignored me, and continued to fuss.... Good Girl!!!

Check this out! *warning heartbreaking images*

There is some hope. I read somewhere that the fast food industries like PopEye's and McDonalds, are pressuring both the farmers and the governement to inact laws to stop this kind of treatment of meat animals. McDonald, Popeyes and KFC have all lost lots of money by being boycotted by people and groups after seeing TV news shows about the conditions the animals are kept in. This is where PETA started out. And where they shold have stayed, in my opinion. Back then were not treated as crazy fanatics because they were actually doing some GOOD in these areas...... There are still people who boycott Tuna from some of the companies, because some of them capture live dolphins in their nets and dont bother to free them. And wont buy the more expensive nets that prevent dolphins and sharks from being captured. The bottom line is money. I stopped eating at McDonalds, Popeyes and KFC...and I wrote them letters letting them know WHY....and told them I was letting other people know about the cruelty as well. That's about all we can do...not all of the farmers treat their animals like that...the ones that do can sell their meat cheaper, by not doing things humanely. -
Wow that's amazing!!!!!!!! God works in wonderous ways eh? Remember how u had the hardest time finding a dog? Yeah, I think this is why, it was ment to be!
I think so too...if I hadnt have adopteed her, with all her problems, I might not have a house today... no one else wanted her...she is too fearful, not a good "family dog" (NOT YET!! I WILL get through these issues...) and yes, maybe it was meant to be... I love her, and wouldnt part with her, because I knew going in she had problems that needed special help.. I know I can handle it, so I took her when no one else would... and with all those problems., she has probably saved my life...so yes, I believe God works in strange ways... I love her. And will work with her. that's all that matters...
Oh my, coutnek, you don't know just how lucky you are! On March 12 of this year, my best friend's house burned down. Guess how? An ashtray dumped into the garbage with a cigarette that wasn't done burning! She lost virtually everything! Good for Laurel for catching that before it got out of hand!
yea, I DO know...that's why I'm so impressed. Freebee slept through it... if Laurel hadnt have alerted, my house may have burned down... she is very afraid of everything, but she seems able to overcome that fear when necessary. If not for her, I may have lost my house, my son, maybe even myself...and Freebee and PushyCat too (both of whom SLEPT through it)...I am very grateful to her...Maybe some things happen for a reason...I adopted a difficult, fear-filled dog, have been trying to get her issues worked out, as hard as they are...I have to go out in the yard and get her when she's too afraid to come in, no matter how cold it is... and she probably saved my life...maybe this is my DO IT AND STOP COMPLAINING heads-up.... :D :D :D :D
She got attacked...and now she's attacking every dog we meet
courtnek replied to Lucky Chaos's topic in Aggression
she may actually be reacting to the fact that her best friend was hurt (getting her ear ripped and her butt kicked) and now feels she has to defend. Remember they are pack animals, and defend each other. Her best friend defended her and got hurt...she may be making sure it never happens again, to her OR her best friend. Maynbe the best thing to do would be to take them out together., and let them play with known non-aggressive dogs, so there is nothing to defend against....make them both realize that not every dog encounter will be a bad thing.... -
his head looks too big for his body, which may cause problems down the line.... all of our dogs today are crosses of dogs with other dogs, but it has to be done conscientiously and with a reason...and the health issues have to be worked out. Playing with genetics causes a lot of the dogs the media screams about...health issues, temperamnet issues, training difficulties.... It takes many generations to perfect a new dog breed....and while we dont really need anymore breeds, I can see the purpose in crossing dogs for a specific reason - The Golden Lab is a good example and the Guide Dog socieites are trying to perfect it, but they are taking the time and measures necessary to make sure this "breed" has few health issues, has a good temperament, and is willing to be a guide dog for the diabled, which means character control and excellent breeding ethics. They have the money and sponsorship to do this....Most home breeders do not, nor do most have the specific breeding knowledge to perfect the breed.... I just dont want to see a lot of these "fad breeds" ending up in the shelters because they dont work well in a home environment...I'm afraid that's what will happen....
