This doesn't work for all dogs but does for a lot of them and it is what we have done for our dogs. We get a Kong, or Butcher bone (all depends on the breed and if they can crack the butcher bone, Kongs are safer) and fill it with something yummy, usually canned food, sometimes add a little peanut butter or cheese whiz. Put them in their kennel (if you kennel them) and give it to them. Let them get one good lick and then take it away. Give it back and walk towards the door, go take it back again. Give it back and go to the door, pick up your car keys or whatever, put them down and go take it away again. Make this process last about 10 minutes and then finally leave. By the time you go and they get to keep their yummy they are so happy you aren't there anymore to take it away from them they don't care if you are gone at all. This worked wonders for our Pit. Didn't work so great with my GSD but he was overly severe with his separation anxiety and not very food modivated. I think I saw this on a morning talk show on Animal Planet years ago but it works great. After a few times of leaving Piper with her yummy snack everytime we would get her Kong out she would run for her kennel and wait for me to bring it to her. Now we are down to just getting a little treat to kennel when we are leaving and no fussing. If you get more than one Kong or bone you can make a few and then freeze them or fridge them and they take a little longer for the dog to get the stuff out if they are at least chilled. Sorry so long! Good Luck! Also great to keep them quiet and calm if you have company or something to do quietly!

Totally agree with raises the dogs with children. I would hate for any child of mine to grow up and not know the joy of having a pet at least. My daughter was raised with our GSD (rest his little sole) and he was so great with her. When she was learning to sit up I couldn't keep him away from her, she would tumble over and he would run to her to push her back up with his big head and then lay behind her so she wouldn't fall again. In the car he would not move his head from her lap, even when she was teething and tried chewing on his ears! He slept under her crib and was so great. He knew when to be gentle. I miss him so much! I hope I am able to have another baby and I think Piper will be great with the baby too! Not my fault that the boss's kids are terrified of his dog! He's really young and jumping and nippie and hasn't had any training, what do you expect.

-sniff- One of my pups just left :(

I am crying for you! I know it must be tough. We are fostering a wonderful pup now and we have all become so attached I know it is going to break my heart to let her go, but we will have to. Heads up! I'm sure you made sure he has a wonderful home and will be very happy! -
Leo - is Big Hunk of Cheese (made up by my daughter!) Leonardo Stinkanardo (no reason to explain!) Leo Monster - don't ask, I have no clue why, just came out and stuck! Piper - Piper Doodle Stinky Poodle (she's a Pit btw!) That just came about one day and now I think we all call her Doodle more than Piper, sometimes Piper Doodle. Pru, just Pru, nothing has come up yet for her really. Tinkle Quenn maybe!

Montel Williams show on dangerous dogs
piperstubbys replied to Horsefeathers!'s topic in Everything about dogs
ok, WHAT ELSE?? I was reading and reading?? Who else is watching?? I'm at work! Guess it might not do any good to write to them anyway, they really don't care what we say, just what gets ratings. Presa's not pets - well, I'll agree they are not pets for everyone but as far as man eaters?? Oh no! Someone run find Kara!! Maybe she has already been eaten by Scoody?? Oh No! I wonder if she knew Jada was a man eater?? :drinking: Not responsible - let's see , they are pumping them full of drugs and they are not responsible?? How does that work?? Some judges should never be on a bench or allowed to speak much less rule!! -
I know just how you feel. At work I have to constantly defend my Pittie to my boss, who has an English Bulldog. He always mentions it when there is something on the news anywhere about a Pit Bull attacking and hates it when I analize the situation. But his last English Bulldog (dropped dead in their back yard, still no clue what happened to him, very sad!) tried to bite my daughter once, of course he will never mention this, but is dead set that my pittie is going to turn on me! We are trying to have another baby, already have a 10 year old daughter, and he says that our dogs will have to be outside dogs if we have a baby ??? Why?? I asked?? He has his english pup inside with his 2 daughters who are about 2 and 3. He says his oldest is terrified of the dog and screams and crys whenever the dog moves. ?? And what does that have to do with me?? Umm, not a thing. Sounds like he has problems of is own to deal with! Sorry, turned into a vent! It's funny at our vets office, Piper lived there for 5 weeks before we got her so everyone knows her and loves her, so people will give her ugly looks in the vets waiting room and then everyone peeks over the counter and then comes around to make sure they get their visit time in with Piper whenever we are there and the other people don't get quite so much attention and then they look like their feelings are hurt - oh well, don't give ugly looks to my pupper!

Prong and shock collars... am I misunderstanding?
piperstubbys replied to Horsefeathers!'s topic in Training
Not sure if I had said it in my earlier post but I do believe the shock collar should be used as a last resort and that is what we plan on using it for and with lots of guidance from our trainer. As far as the pinch collar, I think they are much easier on the dog than a regular choke that can actualy pinch and leave a lark and can actually choke the dog. The pinch should basically just be uncomfortable during a correction if used correctly. I don't have a problem with this discussion at all, training techniques are great to discuss and get different views from different people and all that but I do find it a bit rude to say enough about a person so that others who are on other boards know who this person is that you are talking about and then debate something they are doing and talk about them when they are not here to defend their own position. I am new to this board and I guess I am just surprised but, does someone want to invite this person in so she can tell her side?? -
Prong and shock collars... am I misunderstanding?
piperstubbys replied to Horsefeathers!'s topic in Training
Personally I have no problem with a Prong collar used in training IN THE RIGHT HANDS, as long as someone has training on how to use it and isn't using it in a harsh way then I don't have a problem. We have used prongs at some point with all three of ours, one of those is a foster pup who has had no leash training and is pulling very bad. With the prong she is doing much better, never has she benn hurt and never ever would we pull on her with the prong, if used correctly they should not ever put the dog in pain, just uncomfortable. As far as the shock collar, we recently bought one and will be working on some training with it. This is after tons of training with our dogs but one of them has major recall issues so this is a last resort. This shock collar will be used, probably briefly, on one of our dogs and then used on the other for probably a bit longer than the first because of his temperment. It will never ever be used on our foster at all because I know it would cause her to regress. We plan on trying it only on vibrate and not shock, or on the tone without the shock and will hope that works first. If this is the person I think you are talking about I believe she has talked to the lady she is getting the foster from before deciding on any method of training for him. Also, she has put the prong and shock collar on herself before ever using either one on her dog to make sure it would not hurt her. The shock collar was being used I believe, to fine tune some responses from her dog and help with off leash training. If this is who I am thinking of. -
Sounds like a good idea. I wish I could take my pups swimming. We used to go to the dog park but they have both gotten a little older and we just can't take them anymore to be safe. Leo loved to jump in and swim out to retrieve a toy but a lab usually beat him to it - one day as a Yellow Lab was coming back in after retrieving the toy, as he passed Leo (who was getting a bit tired by then) Leo grabbed onto his tail and caught a ride back in! It was so funny! As soon as his feet could touch again he let go! But we took Piper over to a friends pool one day and she was so worried about all of the kids she ran around in circle around the pool and wouldn't stop, just watching every child as they jumped in. Finally she couldn't stand it and jumped in after one of the kids - She sunk!!!! The boy she jumped in after grabbed her as she sunk past him and pulled her back up and I had to pull the poor baby out. Gonna have to buy her a life jacket to do that again!

Duh!! :drinking: Think I got it now!! Takes me a while to catch on - so many different ways to post pics! Tried to just post the pic before and it didn't quite work out right - I'll try again on another one! Thanks for posting her pic bigger for me - ISn't she adorable! Such a sweetie! If we didn't already have 2 dogs and 3 cats she would already have found a wonderful home but it's just too much right now and we feel we don't have the time to really devote to three as we would like to. But - Pru went to Advanced Obiedence / Agility with us last night and participated and you would not have know that she just learned sit and stay! She was looking better than some of the other dogs that had been in that class for months! She is so smart! We knew she was smart but were amazed at how well she did! Might get some more pictures tonight at her playtime! :D

And nothing at all from any of the people yet. I e-mailed the people that AKC had listed for CGC and Agility and haven't heard a word from any of them. Tried this before and got the same results. Going to try to talk to our trainer again tonight and see if he can give me any more info but I'm doubting it. Driving me nuts! :drinking:

Actually that is not even the thumbnail, that is the size after getting it down to 80X80 size. Still confused on how to do this, I have a album on MSN already but having problems making sure the pic is little enough to post here, but I'll try again! :P

Ok, well I got my profile pic to come up but that pic I tried to post with Pru didn't work. Oops, guess I'll try that again!

We are currently fostering a beautiful female Pit / GSD mix. She is about 6 months old and very sweet. SHe is UTD on all shots and already spayed. Her name is Pru and she is a very calm and wonderful pup. Pru had a rough start in life. Her litter was taken away from her original "owner" for neglect after their mother was sold for drugs. Pru was thrown out of a car window by her original "owner" also in the process of being rescued. By the time she made it to a great rescue person she had parvo. Pru had a good will to live and pulled thru. We were asked to foster her and gladly accepted. Pru has a beautiful brindle coat with hair much shorter than a GSD but longer than a Pit Bull. She is a wonderful dog. She is great with kids. She is very calm for her age and very smart. Pru needs a wonderful indoor home with a family that can give her all of the love she deserves from a forever family! I would love to post a picture of her but can't seem to figure out how! Can someone help me please??? [/img]

I e-mailed that person last night and hopefully will hear something back from them but I'm not overly hopeful. There is only one person in this county that trains for agility and that is the trainer we are currently with - he has been training for about 10 years and has only had one dog, other than his own, that ever competed in agility. Not very promising I think. Hopefully that lady is still doing something around here and can help us out.

I am new to this board and am looking for some info. We have a Am. Staff that we rescued a little over a year ago. She is now about 1 1/2. We are currently training in agility and are building an agility course in our yard. We are looking for more information on anything around us to help get her going or for us to be able to go and watch a fun show, etc. We are getting her ILPed so that we can possibly compete in AKC Agility. Any info anyone has on getting into this would be great. There is only one agility trainer in our area and he seems too busy to really help us, though we go to class once a week that is all the time we can get in and it is a group class. Also, we really want to get her into Therapy work but seem to not be able to find anyone in the area that can help us with this either. We are in the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!
