1. Checkers, Pres. Nixon's dog, who became the subject of much controversy Pres. Johnson's beagle that he lifted up by its ears Barney, Pres. Bush's scottish terrier (very cute webcams at www.whitehouse.gov) Mille, first Pres Bush's spaniel who wrote a book Buddy, Pres. Clinton's dog, as undisciplined as his "dad" and who also had a sad end (though fatal in his case) Fala, Pres. Roosevelt's Scottish Terrier I just read that our future Pres. Kerry has a GSD... :evilbat:
  2.

Sue Sternberg.
:niewiem:
inventer/peddler of the "assess a hand"... plastic hand on a stick that shelter workers use to test food aggression. Of course, the dog knows the hand is plastic, so you could just use a stick..... Also peddler of the notion that showing a dog a doll will test whether the dog is child aggressive... Also peddler of the notion that 75% of the dogs in the NE are unadoptable (so she goes south go import them) Also peddler of the notion that you can't adopt a pit bull out to anyone with other dogs, cats, or children, or to anyone who lives in a neighborhood with other dogs, cats or children, or who lives in a neighborhood where someone might object. (I am not making this up: it's in the intro to her "Controversial Pit Bull" tape) I suppose she does deserve credit for popularizing the idea that shelters should temperament test dogs. Unfortunately her methods (especiallyas applied in so called no kill shelters) result in the deaths of untold thousands/millions of potentially adoptable dogs.
  3.
Ya - maybe its best to make people register and not allow "guests" - this board seems to allow members to vote on banning and locking topics and such - (which is very rare, heck ive never seen a board that works this way) so why not let members vote on allowing unregistred guests to post as well? Ya im too new here to have an opinion on Primrose, but even unpopular folks have good advice sometimes - like that SS lady who was in that Shelter Dogs special on HBO - what a nut! I dont think every dog that growls when you try and take its food away is a lost cause and needs to be PTS. But, on the other hand, she does know what she is talking about in other areas. ]
LOL Primrose LOVES SS! :drinking: :drinking: :agrue:
  4.
:stupid: :ices_blah: ...
the end of the use of ALL domesticted animals--no pets, no livestock for meat, no zoos, circuses or rodeos, and we must all become vegetarians.
This doesnt even make sense! Animals in zoos are not domestic! Sorry I know I shouldnt have replied but this just angers me so bad.
she means that PETA and HSUS have an agenda of "no animal use"; she misspoke since that includes wildlife as well as domesticated species. The most avant garde of the animal rights philosophers (Tom Regan, Peter Singer etc) certainly do hold that humans should not "exploit" other animals. PETA is a group that tries to put this philosophy into action. PETA has views ranging from the bizarre to the biologically illiterate. They hate pit bulls, too. If you want to try to understand the whole "there is no overpopulation" thing, sign up on the yahoo group "pet-law" and lurk for awhile.
  5.
Hey! Are you accusing my cat of being fat? He's just fluffy! Okay, maybe a little pudgy.
wellll... maybe you need to get him out more? After your experience training 2 bullies, a mere cat should be a piece of cake (so to speak) agility cat, anyone? http://www.catagility.com/
  6.
...
No, what I see she writes is how horribly irresponsible many of the owners and breeders of Pit Bulls are. I don't think she slurs dogs and their owners as much as she really hits home with some of her comments and that makes people uncomfortable. Carla
what nonsense.. all pit bull owners know about the horrible irresponsibility of some owners and "breeders". We don't need Primrose to lecture us. And especially because her "solution" is "mandatory s/n of unregistered pit bulls" (though she really means all non-AKC/UKC pit bulls) That means laws that would enable officials to come to people's houses to check on the breeding status and registration of their dogs. Since when do you favor that sort of police state? Not to mention her bizarre obsession with aggression and the disingenuous deliberate way she seques her discussions from dog-dog agression to dog-human aggression. Nor the incredibly cruel way she uses people's personal tragedies or difficulties You should know better... and you would if you actually read all her posts instead of just doing these "hit and run" defense-of-Primrose comments. Nic started a board just so Primrose could have her own uncensored forum. Funny how no one---least of all Primrose--- ever went there. Maybe you'ld like to reinvigorate it so you have a place to chat with her
  7.
 Why does everyone think my cat is so huge? He is a big cat, but Tully isn't a particularly large dog, either. She's a bit under 16" at the shoulder, standard height for an SBT. She's very compact, though, weighs about 35 pounds. I think the cat weighs about 16.
well I would say the cat is definitely NOT compact. It's very very "fluffy" (a human would say "I'm just big-boned") :evilbat: :P
  8.
I took Hailey to the dog park last weekend and I was totally excited since she had done so well with recall in her classes. However, as soon as I let her off leash she was gone like a SHOT!!!! She refused to return on my voice command so I resorted to blowing a whistle (also taught in class)...:
I think you may have moved too fast. Doing good recalls in a class situation is much different from the dogpark! Remember, dogs don't generalize. Work on longlead recalls in places with fewer distractions. You want to set up your dog to succeed, not fail. Doing recalls in a dogpark where she's having so much fun is very advanced! Don't be frustrated.. just go back to square one and take smaller steps.
  9.

my fave! thanks. :P
  10.
I have a question regarding this article. ( which I think is a great article by the way... :D ) Jada, our presa, often raises her hackles when she comes near another dog. Should this be something I should be overly concerned about? The reason why I am asking is because this article mentions a dog raising its hackles as dangerous. ...!
my understanding is that the hackle raising is a sign of concern/alert. It won't necessarily lead to anything more. For example, a border collie and my pitbull Lulu share an intense mutual hate relationship. Whenever we pass that dog's house, Lulu's hackles raise slightly. We always pass by peacefully; if the dog is sitting out in her yard (which she often is, but almost always stays...) then I get Lulu's attention on me to avoid any greater arousal. So basically, I sure watch my dogs carefully when their hackles go up (and the higher the hair raises, the more concerned I am!) to make sure that I can anticipate and prevent anything.
  11.

Anyone know of a good way to get dog hairs off the sofa?
Sure fire GAR-UN-TEED method..... Sit on said sofa wearing a business suit or dress of a contrasting color. Make sure you are on the verge of being late for an important appointment. Hairs will instantly transfer to the seat of suit or dress.
alternative method: invite over some people who don't really like dogs (not that any of us KNOW such weird types...) and have them sit on the sofa. Not only will their clothes attract all the hairs already on the sofa, your dogs will immediately leap onto their laps and roll around, depositing all the remaining loose hair on them.
  12.

...There is a family of cats in our back yard. I see them sitting on the slide from the swingset, laying on top of the picnic table and even sunbathing in the driveway :-? !!! My guys go crazy every time they see them.
my girl Lulu grew up with cats, so she always tolerated them. Until we moved here, where are numerous tough cats who lie in the middle of the sidewalk and hiss/attack if we get too close. So now she wants to chase cats and acts like she hates them. So one day I come home, go out in the backyard and there she is snoozing in the sun as she usually does. Lying not 5 feet away, also snoozing, was one of the neighborhood tough cats. I had to wake Lulu up to inform her of the trespasser, who sauntered casually away.
  13.
Ha... when I first glanced at thepicture with the green ribbons at his feet, I thought he was wearing flippers! :D Silly guy! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! :bday:
I believe that Elmo's "flippers" are actually the 2 ribbons representing his first "double q" in AKC agility. Those of you who do agility know that this is a BIG!!!!!!!!!! accomplishment. For those of you who don't, trust me: this is a BIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! accomplishment. Elmo is awesome! :drinking:
  14. The AKC has some great material for kids about behavior around dogs. Their video actually features a Staffy Bull, too.
  15. I'm a huge fan of Badrap, but this is a major error: " Denver just reversed their ban as ineffectual." Colorado passed a law that forbids BSL. Denver is FIGHTING this new law in court, based on "home rule" provisions of the state constitution. Denver loves their anti-pit bull legislation, though (or because...) it results in the deaths of hundreds of innocent dogs and the harassment of numerous innocent, reponsible citizens every year.
  16. I was at a Suzanne Clothier seminar in which people were demonstrating the behavior their "aggressive dogs". One participant brought out her border collie, saying he snapped at her when she tried to pet him. Clothier had her walk the dog up and down the room. She said "look at his hips".. we could ALL see that the dog was moving awkwardly. It was only then that the dog's owner could see it for herself and mentioned that the dog only snapped when she touched his hind end. So do have your vet check out your dog thoroughly for any conditions that might be causing it pain. While you still don't want the dog to be growling at you, you can surely make some accommodations if it has some physical conditions causing it pain.
  17. http://www.fataldogattacks.com/statistics.html There are very very very few dog-related fatalaties. Consistently over the past 35 years, about 13/year. There are very very very many non-fatal dogbites, but there are no reliable breed statistics about nonfatal bites.. Though I don't think arguing about statistics is the best way to go. There are too many questionable aspects to how they are collected. I think the better ways are 1) ineffectiveness ... the bad people with the effected breeds will either just ignore the law or go on to some worse dog 2) cost... how do they intend to enforce the new laws? With what personnel? Are they enforcing existing laws? 3) efficiency... do they really want law enforcement to spend valuable time wondering whether a particular dog is a banned breed? And are they prepared for the time they will have to spend defending their actions in court? 4) fairness... why should responsible lawabiding owners not be allowed to own their dog of choice?
  18. someone please explain this one to me! The dogs were found in a locked area, not near the cats. I think the dogs were not even from the shelter. The cats that were killed were sick cats, each in their own cages; someone had to have let them out. Here's the brief version from one site: "Slaughter Cat massacre in North Carolina Authorities in North Carolina are investigating the apparent massacre of 13 cats at a Wilmington animal shelter. Two pit bulls may be to blame. The dogs were found sleeping in a cage in the back of the shelter, along with the dead cats. The husband of the shelter's manager discovered the scene. He says he was so shaken he could barely pick up the phone to call somebody. The dogs are in the custody of animal services. Their owner has been cited for creating a public nuisance and allowing the dogs to run at-large. " here's another longer version: http://www.wect.com/Global/story.asp?S=1993816&nav=2gQcOQKw This version puts more emphasis the only way this could have happened: some horrible excuse for a human deliberately took sick cats (who must have been unable to escape) out of their cages and into an enclosed area with strange dogs. Unfortunately (but predictably) almost all of the headlines went the expected "Pit bulls attack cats in rescue shelter" route. I don't get: what the **** would motivate this ******* to do such a thing? But it also seems like there must be more to the story.

    marrowbones
I never thought to freeze them and then put peanut butter in them after ward. Thanks for that info  Thanks pitbullEmily
you can stuff Kongs the same way and freeze them I use apple sauce (plug the small opening with peanut butter..) I don't think there's any limit! :drinking:
  20. my vet has told me that an aspirin is ok for dogs. Buffered or baby aspirin is easiest on their stomach. If you do a google search for asprin and dogs, you'll find some reliable sites that coule reassure you.
  21.
Currently I'm looking to buy another investment apartment building. Well why looking at a home and inspecting the back yard I saw the cutest Pittie. Only 1 problem he was in an old metal crate on the fire escape. It must have been 85 here yesterday and he was in the sun. Am I the only one who thinks that is wrong? Doesn't the metal get hot? I spoke to the owner of the building and asked why does he allow that? He looked at me as if I have 5 heads. My son then says, "Well you have to understand we love dogs and my momma hates to see that. " Hello I think that is abuse! Anyways I had to rant about it.
the problem isn't so much the crate on the fire escape: it's that there's no water or shade... I think those are basic requirements everywhere. I would definitely either/or 1) talk to the owner of the building again 2) call Animal control

    marrowbones

I don't know if there's any reason not to feed a puppy a marrow bone; maybe the marrow is too rich for their digestion??? You might start with a really small (thinly cut) one. I freeze mine first. They keep longer and they LAST longer, too. Both my dogs love them. When you dog has gotten all the marrow licked out, you can put in some peanut butter and then freeze that for another kind of treat.
  23. The fallacy of the Michican Humane policy... to kill ALL pit bulls seized from scumwad owners or picked up as strays ... is that some of these dogs were LOSERS in the pit. So they are probably no more dog agressive than the average Jack Russel Terrier, for example. Certainly many (perhaps most) of them are not suitable for adoption for a variety of reasons and we all know how difficult it can be to find the right home for pit bulls. But in terms of scummy wouldbe pit bull owners, Detroit really is not different from Oakland, where BadRap manages to identify and place many fabulous pit bulls, or NYC, where the ASPCA featured on Animal Precinct also manages to save pit bulls. Or any other big city in the US where dogfighting is a problem. It's a cop out for Michigan HS to kill them all. Sure, it's an easy solution; much easier than actually assessing each dog they get.. But it's unfair and unhumane. Pit bulls deserve the chance to be properly temperament tested and to be carefully placed.. Just like any other dog. And kindly do not start whining about how underfunded and understaffed they are. Are they in the killing business or the saving business?
  24.
They DO lick their butts, BUT their mouths are STILL cleaner than a humans. And we think WE are the clean ones! What do we know?
well, I don't think WE lick our own butts... :evilbat:
  25.
Gnasher has been suffering from pain for several months now which has finally been traced to being caused by a small spur of bone on his spine which should not be there. Rest and anti-imflamatory painkillers have not made a great deal of difference so we are now moving on to try acupuncture if Gnasher will tolerate it. I am concernd about his reaction to it as he was badly abused before I had him so tends to panic about things at times particularly with people he does not know. Any experience? Dawn
I have heard that acupunction works well in these cases and it seems to be helping my dog. Did your vet take a set of xrays? My understanding is that it's important to determine whether the spur is from a single incident, and therefore may not cause additional problems, OR whether it's genetic and degenerative. If the calcification has resulted from instability in the spine, it may increase, that could cause more problems in the future, including higher levels of pain or even crippling (depending on where the spur is). Look up "spondylosis" on the web; this may be what your dog has. It's very common and not necessarily a problem. But if you can afford it, you may want to try to get referrals to an orthopedic vet or a neurologist. In a young dog, a future of pain and limited activity is not very positive. There are surgical solutions, though they are expensive and carry their own risk.
