1.
Are you sure you don't want to go temp. eval her for me?
I really should - it would be fun!
2. Too bad I couldn't adopt him and keep him for ya until you move here... ;)
3. Ilsa always comes back into the house bleeding - not frm her pads, but from the tops of her feet, her pasterns... the ice layer beneath the snow simply cuts her up! I usually use booties, but dogbooties.com seems to have neglected to make me a new set! Corrie, sic 'em!
4. NAPOLEON! Little guy with a BIG attitude...
5. Many dobe people I know swear by chiro - one of Ilsa's cousins was breaking his gait after he was in a car accident, so he kept missing those elusive majors he needed to finish. After visiting the chiro, he finished in a single weekend!
6. Boosie, which vet did you go to? (I think I'm in your area... right?) PM me if you'd prefer it. my vet in Cedar Rapids is expensive, but not *that* expensive!
7.
Cori I know has corgi in her
I believe she's %100 corgi... Cardigan, that is!
8. you'd think people would know what kind of dog Ilsa is - I mean, she's clearly a dobe! However, here's the list of what she's been mistaken for (let's see if I can remember them all.. probably not) ~ greyhound (I get this one all the time - even though Ilsa is cropped and docked) ~ red nose pit bull (NO idea where they got that one!) ~ chocolate lab/doberman mix (sorry guys, they come in four colors!) ~ ibizan hound (I can see that one... sort of) ~ a "really skinny" rottweiler (hmmm...) ~ great dane
9. Today was Ilsa's 3rd... my my my, she's in her prime! Seems like just yesterday she was a little puppy in a shriner hat! The birthday girl got a cake and a new toy this morning, and tonight she gets a can of Merrick's for dinner!
10. I've never lied about Ilsa's breed, but when she was a puppy I was terified that someone in the neighborhood would try to take her form my by force. It wasn't exactly the greatest neighborhood, and I was really nervous when people would drive by reeeeeally slowly to ogle my Doberman puppy. Nowadays though... I'd like to see someony try and take her... she isn't a puppy anymore... :evilbat:
11. Corrie - have you had a chance to make it to DogBooties? (Sorry admin - my PMs seem to time out all the time! )
12. Don't worry - just chalk it up to not knowing - next time, you'll recognize that behavior and know what to do ;) One night Ilsa wouldn't stop pacing. She must've been about 8 months odl or so. I kept trying to get her to calm down, but to no avail. I had noiced extra police activity in the neighborhood but I didn't make any connection. Suddenly, Ilsa stood stock still and froze for about 10 seconds. She then quietly trotted to the back door and stood there - watching silently - about five feet away from the door. I went into the kitchen to see what was up... and that's when I heard the back deck creak - someone was on our deck! I was amazed that Ilsa was still silent but watching the door intently. Seconds later, the doorknob jiggled, and Ilsa sprang into action. She started roaring (which is a noise that will chill you to the bone - I've only heard it a couple times, and only from Dobes) and literally hit the door with her body. I heard footsteps running off the porch andinto the night. I was shaking by that time, and made sure to reward Ilsa right away. She had actually cracked the door with the impact - and it was a 2.5" thick solid oak door! Later I found out that a man was caught in about a block away from my house - he'd stabbed his girlfriend that night... now I don't know if the person on our deck was the murderer, but IMO Ilsa did her job. Not to mention the time she cornered an intruder at five months of age. True, the intruder was just a young teenager, but still - that takes guys for a five month old puppy to do that! (Especially since she's from show lines, not working lines!)
13. YES! Leather furniture is gret with animals - organic for easy to clean, doesn't stain easily, and you can simply condition those pesky scuff marks out - that is, if your dogs have long enough nails to make scuffs in the first place...
14.
Teller sired 19 American Champions
Ilsa's granddaddy... :D
15. I agree with Corrie, and would like to add that there is more to a dog than its working ability. A dog can't work if it's dead from cardio at the age of two. But yeah - let's all just step away and take some deep breaths - we're all friends here.
16. Actually, I don't believe Dobermann had a name for his dogs. His successor, the man left in charge of the breeding program, named the breed. I think. Hmmmm... It's interesting - my family was living in Apolda/Thuringen/Germany at the time when Dobermann was developing the breed. Makes me wonder if they were ever bad people who didn't pay their taxes... :evilbat:
17.
I dont even want to see how most show dogs are kept at home..poor dogs.
If you've never seen it, please don't judge it. I've seen lots of show dogs and how they live - IMO most live like ordinary dogs, and many live like kings and queens. I know some that have their own Winnebagos for showing, their own rooms... many show people go overboard in their care for their show dogs! All I'm going to say is that Mary is a good person and doens't overbreed. She's been in the breed for many many years, and it's not surprising that she's finished so many dogs. She's got the money to do it, as well as the quality. Dobermans have large litters. Why, Ilsa's sire came from a litter of five, and all five of those dogs are champions. My breeder has bred many many many champions and Top Twenty dogs. She also bred the test dog for the DPCA's working aptitude test. She's also been int he breed for around 40 years. I don't know how many champions she's bred, but she's just been able to finish a lot of dogs. Last year alone she finished 11 dogs - some co-owned, some co-bred. So, if you take those two years (last year and the year of Ilsa's sire) that's at least 16 champions - about 1/10 of Mary's record achieved in two years.
18. Ilsa's always been a photogenic girl - she's always loved the camera. And yes court, I too would like to see her in advertising. Sadly, I haven't been able to find any dog modeling agencies in my area! ;) And Doberman is spelled with one "n" in America and Canada, two "n"s in Europe - if an American or Canadian breeder is tryng to sell their dogs based on the "Euro Gimmick", they'll often use two "n"s... ugh.
19. Perfect, beautiful (ignoring the below zero temps, work with me here!) pristine Iowa winter day! Here are the photos from today. Some are better than others, but I'm warning you - there are a lot of them! ::snicker:: goofy girl... 20. I know Mary - and yes, she's got a lot of champions to her name. She's a very down-to-earth person and has a good head on her shoulders. Do I agree with everything she does? No, but no one is perfect. I'm sure that 150 champions includes co-breedings. It's fairly easy to be a cobreeder, and that might account for the large number of champions. And Corrie is right - she's been in the breed for a looooong time. If you pread it out, that averages about 4 champions per year.
21. Actually the dog is Horizon's Power Play MX MXJ AD AJ TT CGC, a.k.a Mason. His owner is one of my internet buddies. There was a larger version of this print that sold at auction for over $400 - the highest bidder was Mason's breeder!
22. One of my prints up up for auction - the auction is handled by Special Needs Dobermans, and all proceeds go to helping the Doberman listed on the auction. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7126399942
23.
Jay had had her hop up on top of a stack of dog food they had in the aisle (about 4 feet up, I'd say), and stay, while he walked around the store and kept her there. Mom thought she was a dog statue at first!
\ Yup, Ilsa and Misty train together. It's neat to see noth of them on downstays in the store! Gigi, did you ever come into the Groomng part of Petco on those Saturdays? I was the short groomer with the reeeeally short dark hair, usually the one with the big hairy collies and chows!
24.
Sizzle, Gigi lives in Marion, and I live in Cedar Rapids. Looks like we got hit just as bad as you!
NO WAY!!!! I live in Cedar Rapids and Ames! I'm a college student at ISU, but I spend a lot of time in CR since that's where I grew up and where my parents live. If you've ever been to the Cedar Rapids/Marion Petco, you've probably seen Ilsa! I'm in there all the time. Hav eyou ever met Jay with his Standard Schnauzer Misty? Misty was Ilsa's first friend!
25.
In east central Iowa, we have estimates from 10-14"....I'd say around a foot at our house.
Gigi, where do you live? I live in east central and central IA (depending on what part of the year it is).
