1. There's a very simple solution, tomato juice :D ! Put a few tablespoons in her food everyday, it will help with the nitrogen burning the grass, and it won't tweak her Ph level like those supplements will.
2. I wouldn't worry about it too much, it's fairly common among the unspayed. You'll probably see some nesting behaviors, maybe a little milk production, and my favorite, the "mothering" of a toy. This can pass in as little as a week, or as long as a few months. My own bitch decided the remote control was her "baby", took it everywhere with her :-?, we didn't watch tv in the livingroom for a week  .
3. Better now? I'm still trying to master the pic thing  .
4.
Oh! I know! I know! I know what breed Primmy has! WOMBATS!
    Now THAT cracked me up, you must have been on Sunshine at one time or another!
5. Here's the findings for thrombosis from the Merck veterinary medical manual, it's a mouthful, but informative if you can get through the medical jargon :) . http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/11500.htm&word=canine%2cthrombosis
6. I generally as a rule try to stay out of the nonsense, but I really can't anymore :-? .
Shave the collies butt and have it walk backwards and you get a german shepard. and the german shepards are very mean. Why else would cops use them????????? I have heard of many attacks by them and pit bulls.
If ignorance were bliss, then you should be downright deliriously happy :-? . And I'll be sure to call the folks I used to work with at The Seeing Eye and advise them to no longer use the "very mean" GSD for guide dogs  .
7. Oops  , that was me who posted above.
8. Hi Ron, welcome to the board :) ! I have treated quite a few dogs with heartworm, I actually have one right now who is being treated (I do Siberian rescue). The treatment is not as bad as it used to be, up until several years ago most vets were still using Caparsolate to kill off the worm, today they use Immiticide, a much milder drug. And if caught really early, Heartguard preventitive (Ivermectin) can also be used to slowly kill off the heartworm. The most important, and probably hardest, part of treatment is to keep the dog very quiet for 6 weeks after the treatment, which means no playing or running. Any hard activity could cause a dead or dying worm to clot , enter the bloodstream and cause a stroke. Rare, but possible. If she's not stage 5, by all means treat her, especially if she's young and healthy, the odds are very good in her favor :) .
9.
To me, wearing the prong while in the kennel is like me going to bed with a bra on...
H*ll, if I didn't wear one to bed, my hoohahs would hit the floor every time I bent over in my decrepit state   ! But I know what you mean, dogs need "downtime" too. The collar should have been right under her ears in the back, and just under the chin in the front. Regardless of fit, it almost sounds like they put it on and expected the dog to train herself, which ain't gonna happen. The prong is a good tool, but still needs training in conjunction with it to make it work right. I say get her, she's cute!
10. Prong collars can and should be left on for the duration of a day so the dog doesn't become "collar smart" , but ONLY under supervision, those people should not have had it on when she was kenneled, that's a major no-no :x . And if she was pulling herself against the collar, I can almost guarantee it wasn't fit properly. Was it low on her neck and loose? If it was, shame on whomever put it on without finding out how to use it the right way.
11. Mei-Mei, if the carpet was cleaned once before with anything other than the cleanser they recommend, you get a mountain of suds when it tries to extract, I know from experience  . They sell an anti foaming solution to add to the machine to stop it, works well.
12. Oh, HF, he's beautiful  ! And that is some great news indeed, I can't believe he's found his feet so fast!!
13. Kat, what's your field, want a job when you graduate  ? I would love to read your thesis, any chance of you posting it up somewhere?
14.
Actually, the dog IS a subspecies of wolf
What part of the word genus do you not understand :-? ? If you're going to refute my post, please do your homework, the following information is supplied from several controll studies. Nobody is quite sure of the origins of the dog, period. It's ongoing research, and a definitive answer may never be found.
The prominent reason that the direct ancestor of Canis Familiaris is unknown is the above - described variation.Such variation in function, form and behaviour makes it difficult for remains and fossils to be interpreted using morphological and physiological methods. The advent of molecular genetic technologies has increased the number of available techniques used to investigate evolutionary lineages at a molecular level. These techniques combat the problem of variant and diverse forms. However, research pertaining to the domestic dogs evolution has not been investigated particularly thoroughly as yet.Until further molecular research is undertaken numerous theories and hypothesis regarding the evolution of the domestic dog cannot be disproved. Who is the Direct Ancestor of The Domestic Dog? The origin of the domestic dog is somewhat unknown .Various hypotheses are given through evolutionary literature.Labelling the ancestor of the domestic dog is difficult not only due to the variation within the species and the unnatural associated domestication, but also the unusual interfamily breeding ability species within the family Canidae attain. The species of Canidae that can interbreed include the jackal, wolf, dingo and coyote, all of which are associated with different theories relating to the evolution of the domestic dog. The phenotypically diverse nature of the domestic dog led Charles Darwin {1868} to believe that the species had originated from more than one wild population and from more than one species of wild canid.Along the same notion were the hypotheses of Austrian Behaviouist Konrod Lorenz.Lorenz suggested that the behaviour of domestic dogs could be associated and compared with the behaviour of both the wolf and the jackal. These suggestions have since been reviewed and to a certain point rejected. The advent of molecular technologies has ascertained that the jackal is distantly related to the domestic dog. Interestingly a concensus is emerging throughout literature with the introduction of mor molecular papers.More researchers are implying that the wolf was in fact the predecessor of the domestic dog.In particular ,two research papers investigate and compare the mitochondrial DNA of domestic dogs, wolves, jackals and coyotes. Results conclude that variation exists in all sequences, interspecies included.Variation within the domestic dog was significant however breed could not be determined..From the results deviations of mitochondrial DNA sequence were least between the domestic dog with the jackal and the coyote. Therefore conclusions were made that the domestic dog arose from founding wolf populations. Although conclusions were made from the molecular papers that the wolf is the closest relative of the domestic dog -limitations regarding this research are numerous.Mitochondrial DNA was used to examine the relationship between the canids. However mitochondrial DNA is passed on from the mother to the next generation therefore this molecular analyses would not have found the effects of siring by coyotes or jackals. As well as this, the dingo was not included in any of the studies.Although it is thought the dingo originated from the domestic dog,the dingos closest ancestor and its relationship with other canids is strongly debated. One author debates that all domestic dogs in fact originated from the dingo, not the other way around.Another ,fault of the molecular papers is the fact that the grey wolf and red wolf are the only types of wolves used in the analyses.Clutton Brook[1984] suggest that the closest ancestor of the domestic dog is neither the red wolf or the grey wolf but in fact the Indian wolf.Where as Olsen[1977]believe the domestic dogs originated from the Indian Wolf and Mathews[1971] stated that various races of wolves are the progenitors of the domestic dog. As has been detailed, numerous hypotheses have been given explaining the origin of the domestic dog.molecular evidence suggest that the greay wolf and the red wolf ar the closest relative of the domestic dog. However such studies are deficient regarding the number of canids analysed.Behaviouists suggest domestic dogs could have derived from jackals and some biologists suggest coyotes. As well as this, another author states that the breeds of domestic dog originated from the dingo. This example of disagreement is rife throughout the literature. Overall the phenotypic variation evident in the species Canis Familiaris makes it difficult to behaviourally or morphologically determine the origin of the domestic dog. Therefore molecular research is the most reliable technique in determining the predecessor. However, thorough molecular studies are presently unavailable.Further molecular research will undoubtedly determine the most recent ancestorof the domestic dog. However until such research is undertaken it is unwise to eliminate any species of canid.Although molecular technology will determine closest relative of Canis Familiaris ,it is unlikely that the exact time and place of speciation will be confirmed.Questions that may never be answered include; 1]Did the Domestic dog arise from one founding event or many ? 2]Has the occurrence of hybridization between domestic dogs and wild canids after the speciation event, contributed to the vast phenotypic variation evident in the domestic dog ? Alissa Steinke 2001
Hybrids are not mutts, they are a blend of two entirely different species, a mutt is a blend of the same species. Kind of like us 8) .
15. I'm sorry, but this is the one time I must disagree on trying to save a breed. Wolves and dogs may be the same genus, but are still very much two different species, and should not be mixed. It's a genetic crapshoot at best, and having had worked with several of them over the years, hybrids can be unruly and untrainable at best, dangerous to the family that owns it at worst.
16. That's great :klacz: ! How is everyone accepting the new arrival?
17. HF, what exactly is reprostituted beef jerky? Jerky that gets eaten for money  ?
18. I'd like to think positively, but if you go back and look, all of the pics of his dogs are gone from all the sites RnP frequents :( . I'd like to think it may have been for a good reason, but will wait for an explanation.
19. Plus, at four months, he is in all likelyhood starting to teethe, a wet washcloth that's been frozen and tied in a knot should help, along with plenty of appropriate chew toys. Pups chew to relieve the pain of the new teeth cresting, and continue to do so even after the new teeth come in, a dogs teeth don't set firmly in the jaw until 12 to 14 months of age. Enjoy your new pup :D !
20. In all honesty, Chows aren't my favorite breed either, in the 80's, they made up the majority of my training clients :-?, they seemed to be the dog of choice for all the up and coming yuppies. Chows, who are really more like cats than dogs, were bred by the Chinese to be war dogs originally, and they were never considered to be cuddly companion pets even later on. Now translate that to todays society with BYB's producing them by the thousands with no regard to genetics, and people buying them because they give you the warm fuzzies just looking at them  , and you've got a serious attitude problem on your hands. And Jeff, tell Kira I love her too :grins: , I kinda like Akita's, especially because of their attitudes! In the right hands  , they're a great dog.
21. Good for you and congrats! I wish we had more people like you for those pups in need of a wonderful home  .
22. :o I stopped counting awhile ago, so I forget how old I am too. My kids think I'm so ancient they say they're going to cut me open and count the rings like a tree to make sure they have the right number :P  !
23. Yup, your local S&M shop  . Or you can try this site...... http://www.store.yahoo.com/tailsbythebay/pinspikleatc.html
24. Aww, poor pup :( ! He's got such a beautiful face, probably even more so when he's not cranky  . If you find the moleskin sliding off the ear because he was cropped so short, try getting a couple of those pink foam curlers, take the plastic out of them and insert a pencil, and spray them with the Skinbond, wrap the ears around them and tape up.
25.
I was talking to my mum about this topic, and she told me about a corgi/German Sheperd she had,who looked exactly like a German Shepherd, but mini!I thought it would be so cute!
I actually was the proud owner of one of those, his mom was a Philadelphia K9 dog, straight outta Germany, and dad was a champion Welsh Corgi. His name was Martini, and he was a one of the best dogs I've ever had, despite the raging epilepsy he had , he lived 14 years .
