1. A word of warning... Cockers are notoriously hard to potty train. I grew up with one and until the day she left us to join her sister at the Rainbow Bridge (about 3 yrs ago this month  ) she still had the occasional accident in the house. Especially when there was snow outside, she was insulted by it. Also, since you seem to be inclined to getting our opions, you think you might want to post a list of what you would and would like to have in a dog? Just a thought.
2. I was just about to head to google when the mailman knocked at the door with a pakage and Felix escaped. And of course it's snowing outside and I have to chase him down in sneakers and no coat. By the time I got back my cordless phone (which I was on) was gone and I needed to find some cough drops. And of course we have none and I had apparently dropped the phone outside in a snowbank. Think I'm going to take a half dose of nightquil and take a nap then take up the search again. By the way, thanks for link. Fawn is the perfect color for what I have in mind.
3. Autumn you're a :lilangel: for pointing that out to me. Thanks, darling. :D But I don't plan to get one. They grow up to be entirely too large for my husband's liking. I just need some very detailed information about them for a project I'm working that will involve some indiviuals from the breed. :loveu:
4. Great site Black!  Just one problem.... all the pics are in black and white and I need color. On the other hand... they had an approximate puppy growth chart that may come in handy. Assuming of course my project heads in that direction. :hmmmm: And at this point I have no idea it will lead me. :niewiem:
5. :microwave: WARNING! Finish drinking my first cup of coffee in the morning before I read the forum. :morning: :microwave: I just realized what you said Courtnek. DUH! Amanda! :stupid: I could use that information. Could you please describe what the ones who you fostered's temperment was like? It might prove valuable to this project that won't let go of me.
6. Where can I find really good, full of lots of detail pics? It's kind of important. I want to make sure I get this as accurate as possible. Oh! And thanks for the help! :D
7. This is going to sound extremely vauge but... Can anyone tell me what Irishwolfhounds are really like? No, I'm not planning on getting one myself. I don't think one would fit my life all that well. I just would like to know what they are really like. Not just the breed standard, I can get that easily enough as well as what their personalities are supposed to be like. What I want to know is what their personalities are truly like. Also, what do they need as far as human companions and excirsize. etc. etc. Thanks for info guys :D
8. Lexie, From what you have said about your parents I can tell you they sound an aweful lot like my husband. Rich has fought me tooth and nail from the begining of our relatationship on the animal issue. And that, to me at least, is very sad. People like them will never know the abundant amount of joy that comes from the pets we choose to bring into our lives. Now, please, bear with me as I try to explain some of the things I have gone through and still deal with on a daily bases with Rich. Rich grew up in a home that left ALL animals outside. This is only a problem because my husband was and still is very much a computer geek. He never went outside much as a child. His mom has always hated animals in her home (it's the housebreaking and training issue with her). She will not tolerate Felix or Kusac for long in my home. I tell you this because I feel it has direct bearing on Rich's difficulties with four-legged creatures. As Felix is just a little over a year old and Kusac (my kitten, that I got for him  ) is around 6 months old they are still babies in my eyes and accidents happen. Frequently! Rich will fly off the handle everytime an accident happens. And I mean fly! He gets upset enough to start screaming that he will get rid of them if it happens again. Never mind the fact that we have two boys 4 yrs and 13 months and they have as many accidents in the house as the animals. :agrue: Life in general is never peaceful around here. Felix makes a break for it as often as your Duke does and I have to leave my children alone in the house while I chase him down. I don't dare let someone else try to catch him... I'm afraid I might never get him back. When ever Rich trys to help me, Felix runs farther and farther away. (Rich tends to *run* after Felix.) I feed, bathe, try to train, and keep up with my house chores every day. And, yet, it's never enough as far as my husband is concerned. It took over 5 years of research and patient waiting and explaining until I was able to get Rich to agree to getting a dog. After finding a breed I felt fit best into our life style and met ALL of Rich's requirments I started looking really, really, really hard at the breed. I found and thourghly scanned breeder site after site, not to mention various club sites. Basically, I spent 5 years getting to know my dog's breed. I regret NONE of it. When I wasn't researching I was doing everything I possibly could to prove to him that I not only could but WOULD be able to properly care for and love a dog. I've ranted on enough. But before I go I want you to know that I support you getting another dog. I ask only that you be extremely patient and never give up. You will get a puppy someday. It may take years longer then you would like and you may have a lot of growing up to do before you can get your puppy but you won't regret a minute of it. Strengthen your bond with Duke in the mean time and when the day finally arrives for that new puppy to enter your life, Duke will be there to love it as much as you love him. Good Luck!! Remember Dogo is always here to answer questions and support you and your animal loves. :iloveyou:  Amanda, Felix, & Kusac :iloveyou: :user:
9. I have: A 1 yr-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Felix, Tri-colour And a > 6 month old Black kitty named Kusac.
10. The Tri-cloroured Cavalier King Charles Spaniel for me. 8) But then again I've been in love with spaniels in general since I was a kid. Amanda & Felix
11. I've never heard of them. They sure are cute though. :) I'd to have been able to read that site though. Black letters against a dark blue backround with chainlink fenicing... what were these ppl thinking?
12. I wish I could have taken a picture but by the time I got my camera they were following me around the house. Go figure!
13. Okay, so I'm sitting here writing my name and number on some Creative Memories brochures since my upline has invited me to attend her open house this afternoon and maybe talk to new coordinators for my business. I hear Felix's claws ripping across the carpet so I look over... he's running in circles around an arm chair with Kusac on his tail. Literally! Kusac was chasing Felix and winning!! Those two are a pair... I swear!!!
14.
they are very predisposed to herniated disks
I can tell you from personal experience that these are not pretty at all. My mom's Shih Tzu, Sammy, has recently recouperated from one. Sammy had tried to jump up onto Mom's chair the night it happened. He let out a scream mid-jump. After a month of sitting in my youngest son's baby bassinet unable to play due to doctor's orders of strict confinement he still has a slight limp in his back legs. He will never be able to walk normally again. The morning I received the phone call from my mom I knew that something was dreadlyfully wrong from her voice. As soon as she told me what was wrong I went out to her place to wait by her side until the vet called to say that Sammy was going to be fine but they wanted to keep him overnight for observation. (She was told that he may never walk again) She was crying when I got there and continued to cry for most of the day. Being confined didn't help Sammy's temperment either... he was already a chubby, spoiled, little s**** to begin with, now it's even worse. He fully expects to be picked up and carried around as soon as he shows the slightest little sign of an injury. (I'd roll my eyes but my smilies aren't working) JMTCW Amanda
15. Felix and Kusac are eating each other's food. If I feed Felix first Kusac runs over and starts eating the dog's food. But if I feed Kusac first Felix starts eating the kitty's food. This happens even when I seperate them. Kusac on the counter, Felix on the floor. The cat will actually jump off the counter to get at the dog's food. Kusac is now eating on the washer in the utility room but... without the door closed they both still prefer each other's food. (I can't close the utility room door because there is no heater in there... all the heat flows from the central heater in the living room and rooms start freezing this time of year when the doors are closed.) I just spotted Felix (who was fed and finished his bowl) trying to climb onto the washer to see if Kusac had any left in his. Felix was given more food but hasn't touched it and I ended up putting it away because Kusac was eating it. Anyways... I thought you guys would get a good laugh out of this. My only hope is that one day maybe (BIG "maybe" here) they will get the hint about the food thing and give up. Somehow I don't think that will happen.
16. Please forgive my late arrival on this topic but I've not had a working keyboard for over a week and just got back to Dogo. On that note allow me to express my view of a backyard breeder. I have mentioned before that I plan to bred my CKCS, Felix. I will grant that I have made mistakes in gaining ownership of him in the begining. But after spending time not only here on Dogo but online in general I have learned where I made those mistakes and also how to fix and maybe even prevent those mistakes from reaccuring. Felix and I are in the process of learning agility, a sport I believe my very active Cavalier's temperment is more suited to then comformation (like my 4 year old Felix has a hard time standing still for long amounts of time) . Should he prove to be rather compentant during trials and remain competely healthy I will look into finding a mate for him. By healthy, I mean to have him competely certified against hip/eye/ear/heart disease (this includes MVD). BUT should he develop any of these types of diseases he will be imediatly neutered and all of the people I have worked with in regaurds to breeding him will be informed of his disease (this includes all puppy owners). Now, some you of may remember a post I made a short time ago. I was looking for a Brittnay breeder for my dad and was hoping for Dogo's seal of approval. In it I mentioned that my sister has a brittnay of exceptional hunting quality. I have recently found out that she plans to breed her dog. Natuarly I started to question what she did or did not know about certain aspects of breeding (aspects I've recently learned about). She knows little to nothing. When I came to the question about certifing against hip/eye/ear/heart she rolled her eyes and informed me that Dr. Mairs (our regular vet) would tell her if her dog was healthy enough to breed or not. I told her that that was not going to be good enough for some people, she would need to consult a specialist...she sneered at me, saying that it's good enough for her. I believe that (unfortunately) my sister is what could be classified as a classic example of a BYB. Please inform if I am wrong. Again pardon me for my late arrival. Amanda
17. Very informative site. I like it. Had to see what they said about the Cavalier. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel reviews... Most are very positive and they mention nothing I haven't heard before but...
they require a great deal of watching (like a 2 yr old child),
Hmmmm.... I keep a closer eye on my 4 year old then I do Felix.
don't bark
Felix won't shut up. Once he found his voice he has refused to stop using it.
18. Sharpie Girl, I'm glad to hear that Sassy is doing so well. I'm also sorry that I was not here to lend you my love, support, and what comfort I could when she escaped. With all my love, Amanda
19. http://www.topperlynkennels.com/ I really like this one. These people are serious about their pups' well being through out life. What do you guys think?
20. Aomir, I looked at the site you found. Unfortunately they do not have any litters planed at the moment. :( I will keep an eye on them though, thanks. http://members.rogers.com/ataboy/brittanybreedstandard.htm I'm not sure about these folks. :-? They say that you have to buy a bag of Pro Plan puppy food from them when you buy a puppy... at least that is the impression I got from this site. I'm not sure what Mom feeds excatly but I don't think it's Pro Plan. On the other hand, they do have a litter planned for birth in a couple of weeks. What do you think? Should I recommend them to Mom?
21. Mom and I had never heard of a Tri-colored Brittanly either until she started looking earlier this year. She says she would like to get a registered Brittany so I assume she means a Liver Tri-color.
When you say it must be "within driving distance" driving distance from WHERE???
Yes, my parents live in Moses Lake too. But driving distance to my Dad could mean SD. For all I know he may be willing to drive that far to get a Brittany. Please keep in mind that he doesn't know that we are doing this and won't until he's told that we have found a breeder. This is a surprise! :bday: As for the "french" Brittany... I had never heard of them being distinquished from Brittanies like this. I thought that ALL Brittanies were just Brittanies, not "french" or "american".
Learn somethin' new every day, eh?
You most certainly do, abker... especially around here.
22. Here it is.... http://french-brittany.com/plumcreek.htm This breed is not the same. This is apperantly a parent breed... I think? I also have no idea if Mom will yes to this or not but just in case... what do you think?
23.
it may not turn out like Millie
This is the main reason for looking at a Tri-color Brittany instead of an orange and white. And we understand this... we just want to see him happy with a new partner. Now I had a site but I goofed and closed my IE while trying to post it give me a few minutes and I'll try it again...
24. Abby is a big goof-ball. She will retreive perfectly in the yard and during training but once out in the field... She loses it! It's not that she doesn't know how but that she doesn't want to. It's almost if she knows that once she brings that bird back she'll have to wait until the next shot is fired before she play agian. As for the mix... sorry. His heart is too frimly set. The truth is Dad has not been completely happy without Millie. He's been miserable and when he starts talking about her... well you'd have see him to really understand. Those two seemed to have completed each other and I would LOVE to see that again. The bottom line....he needs a new Brittany!
25. I know about the heart defect... it's known as MVD. Don't ask me to spell it, I can only say it and not that well. It's not exactly a heart defect but a defect in the main valve to the heart. I've read many accounts on it. It was a deciding facter in buying Felix. Most of the reports I've read from owners who had to deal with this problem though had one thing in common... the life span of the dog. A dog with MVD could live out it's entire life without any sever problems or it could die early from it. There is a 50/50 chance of either once the problem has been diagnosed. There are breeders that work hard to prevent this defect and there are breeders who do not. Those that do will not breed a dog or bitch once a diagnoses has been made. Those that do not contiune to breed after the diagnoses. :( I'm in the camp of the former. I do plan to breed Felix but ONLY if he remains healthy and if he can prove himself in the show and agility rings. Should he be diagnosed he will be nuetered promtly and any one who has puppies from his line or I had worked with to concieve a litter will be notified imediately! No exceptions!
