OMG! :o :o :o i am so glad i read this thread...i am taking my dogs for checkups, testing and vaccinations tomorrow... i am already nervous because this is my first trip to a veterinarian in Europe...i have never heard ANYTHING about the shot...it has never been recommended to me... i will certainly challenge any vet who recommends it and promptly move on to another vet... thanks SO MUCH for the information
-
Saxo definitely has the Shih Tzu personality, but he is a little more independent than my female. We are going to the vet tomorrow. This is my first experience with a vet in Denmark so I am hoping he is both good with the dogs and knowledgable about the breed.

can someone give me an accurate definition of a double coat? as far as personalities go, the dog i know is a shih tzu and the one i think might be a Lhasa are reversed... Sorsha is more reserved and takes a while to warm up to people...Saxo is friendly to everyone

great advice Rowie... it's so hard for me to be unbiased and level headed when reading posts like this... my family's practice with dogs that were unhealthy, sick or unruly was either to shoot them or go dump them somewhere...i guess i am sort of branded with emotional scars due to that... i see my dogs as my children, a responsibility that i CHOSE!!!! and on that note, i don't feel that someone's bad choices should EVER justifiably result in a dog being abandoned or abused

i won't even let anyone yell at my dogs for barking...our ex-roommate had a problem with Sorsha barking...he had a very deep voice, never bonded with Sorsha, and to put it simply, she just didn't like him... he yelled at her one night for barking...i told him to shut up and leave the room if he didn't like it...BARKING is what dogs DO!!!

geez it's so tough when it's family... i truly hope you can intervene somehow

here's an informative article on the topic... http://www.netpets.com/dogs/reference/genetics/inbreeda.html

i also read that aspartame can be toxic so no artificial sweetener!
-
i'll be doing some research into that starting today... Saxo, my male, will eat ANYTHING... Sorsha, my female, seems to prefer chicken flavoured things... re: people food, I have read somewhere that lots of excess fat can result in diabetes and other problems...mine always get a piece of my toast at breakfast, a few bites of chicken when we have KFC, or a few bites of hamburger from mcdonald's but it's not an everyday thing... also, as with every breed, things like chocolate, raisins, macadamia nuts, etc. can be toxic!! raw meat can carry things like salmonella or e coli... Sorsha has a thing for Soft Ice (something like what you get at TCBY in the states)

Sorsha is nicknamed Baby Stink or Princess Stink... My husband like to call her SORSHA! SORSHA! SORSHA! like MARCIA! MARCIA! MARCIA! in the brady bunch movie

I have two dogs, soon to be three Name: Sorsha (aka Baby Stink) Age: will be 2 years in August Breed: Shih Tzu Name: Saxo Age: 6 months Breed: Shih Tzu (according to papers) Lhasa (according to popular opinion) Name: Frodo Age: 16 weeks Breed: Shih Tzu

Sorsha (female) has not been spayed, and from around 6 months old until we moved away from my parents, she constantly tried to hump their CAT!!!

wonder how this scenario might have been different if the dog had been a rottie or a pit bull? LOL :evilbat: -
neither my male nor female has an OVERBITE...my female has a more noticeable UNDERBITE or UNDERSHOT thanks for your reply angel :)
-
My favorite would have to be the Shih Tzu. Mine (Sorsha) follows me everywhere I go including to bed at night. She has the sweetest temperament I have ever seen in a dog and I would not trade her for anything!
-
thanks for your reply K...your Lhasa is beautiful!!! a little hard to compare with your dog's beautiful hair...hehe i haven't done a lot of research on the Lhasa, but I have studied Shih Tzus... the male my husband recently bought doesn't have the underbite of my female, and as you said, the muzzle looks different... please keep the replies coming=)

for comparison, here is a picture of my female

My husband recently purchased this 6 month old male puppy, and his pedigree from the Dansk Racehunde Union says that he is a shih tzu, but when I compare him to my AKC registered female shih tzu, their facial features look different to me. Any advice will be appreciated.
